I make a killer ropa vieja (mostly done in the slow cooker), but have avoided making vaca frita, which my boys LOVE, because I "fear" it wouldn't be up to par with restaurants and honestly, I thought it would be difficult to make. This video has given me the confidence to make it this week. Looking forward to trying it!!!! I want to make sure that as a Cuban-American, born in the states, I keep Cuban food a part of my boys' (ages 18, 16, and 13) home cuisine! When they eventually get married, and their wives don't make Cuban food for them, they can always come home to mom for her Cuban cooking! Hee, hee! ;-)
I just made this recipe yesterday and it came out incredible! I love your videos and I plan on making more of your recipes! They're also helping me learn Spanish!
Nydia, I made this recipe and the flavor was off the charts. I made slight modifications -- used a sazón rub (my own mix; no MSG) and I used 1 cup of beer instead of wine, because that's what I had on hand. Voló! Next time I'm making double. Thank you for your wonderful videos. Next I'm trying your arroz imperial and picadillo. Un abrazo.
Thanks for the recipe and directions! This year, I'm diving more into cooking both Cuban and German food. Tonight, I'm trying Vaca Frita. We'll see how it goes.
I love this recipe and I make it often...I enjoyed watching this great video. You did a great job!.. I love Vaca Frita and you did it just the way I make it. Truly a genuine way to cook cuban Vaca Frita.
I miss Vaca Frita soooooo much. I found it here in AZ for $20.00 and it IS NOT ENOUGH to take home :(((. I miss my Florida restaurant that sells/sold it for $8.00 and I had it three times. Yum Yum!!
Omg I have been looking for this recipe for years I had a cuban friend that use to make it for me and I forgot how to make it Thank you Nydia now I could make it myself woohoo
When you set meat to boil with veggies, garlic and wine do you cover it up or leave it uncovered? First time making this restaurant favorite of mine, hope it comes out half as good as yours look! Thanks.
My husband is Cuban and this is one of his Fav dishes ever! And the albondigas too. You should make albondigas one of this days and show us. Saludos desde Texas ;)

Yes GardenLady...You certainly can...follow all the same instructions and shred your chicken just like you would the beef. It will turn out exactly the same way. It is deliciuos with chicken as well... be sure to add lemon juice and I add Lemon Pepper while I fry it... it just adds more tangyness. Enjoy it.
Me quedo tanbuena que mi hija me la pidio de Nuevo. Asi que estoy boiling the meat for tomorrow. Thanks you again!! Also, I'm gonna make pastelitos de carne. You are good cook!!!

In Cuba, when a neighbor or relative showed up right before lunch or dinner it was called " Pegar la gorra" So that's what Maria is doing . hahahahaha!
For me its easier. Thanks Nydia. Again....'te la comiste' como dicen los Cubanos! Hasta la proxima.
