I am currently working on lesson plans for a book called the Red Umbrella, a historical fiction book about Operation Pedro Pan and was looking up cuban authentic food becuase my neighbor growing up was also Cuban. Im curious if your abuela was born here, or if she was part of pedro Pan or the 1980 Mariel Boatlift?? I high suggest looking up the author Christina Diaz Gonzalez for any Cubans out there that want to read great book about Cuban immigration stories.
She and my grandfather were first generation Cuban born. She came to the United States with my grandfather and my 16 year old mom on a tourist visa in the early 60’s, and applied for political asylum.

My mother later married in the US, and my brother and I were born here.
