  • In 1988 Team BMW Schnitzer came to Wellington and won. In 1989 they returned - determined to make it two in a row. The drivers were Roberto Ravaglia (Italy), Emanuele Pirro (Italy), Fabien Giroix (France) and Steve Soper (UK). They were led by their charismatic team boss and tactician Karl 'Charlie' Lamm and accompanied by their entourage of wives, girlfriends and mechanics.
This documentary was filmed during their stay in New Zealand. It questions some of the myths and mystique surrounding the team. Are they playboys, highly paid petrol-heads, entertainers or professional sportsmen? To the motor racing fan, this offers an informative look behind the scenes at what it took to win the 'Wellington 500'. To the curious, it is a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich, famous ... and fast.

Emanuele Pirro was one without doubt of the best ever Touring car drivers, the pocket rocket BMW M3 was very suited to the Wellington street race.

@@iankinnell5643 Agreed, in the day ( late 80,s early 90,s ) and with the M3 humming along nicely NO ONE could touch especially on tight twisty tracks they were formidable, but on the more open tracks, such as Bathurst Australia, the bigger cars on the straights blew them off! More HP bigger engine. Seen an M3 race locally it was FAST!!!!!!!!!

@@barryphillips7327 of course they blew them off... Gtr with awd and serria cosworth with 500hp is not fair compared to NA 4 pot 2wd...... Completely different class of touring car..... The gtr should've been competing with the Corvette and 911......

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo the BMW M3 was very well suited to the tight twisty Wellington track plus with good drivers good fuel economy.

    We have an ignition problem!
    BMW:Replace the entire engine
lol, what the fuck have you checked the ECU or replaced it?
    A few minutes later..
    We have an ECU problem..
Well duhhhh! You mean to tell me replacing the engine that has nothing at all to do with the ignition system? You don't say..
Wow, I thought Germans were really smart, especially BMW..
    This really shocked me. Geez
BMW if you need a Race driver or mechanic let me know.

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about because there are many other potential causes of ignition issues on an E30 M3 and other cars for that matter. Also, this was not a BMW factory team. It was an independent team licensed to run as an official BMW entry and it wasn’t just Germans either.
