It's my favorite rendition of this masterpiece. Galou's voice is warm, passionate, when most other renditions are flat or setback. She's powerfull and flickering at the same time, wich is remarquable. When I hear how she's imploring, my own voice knotted with emotion. In a way, this interpretation is very romantic. The coordination with the violin looks weak. But still, it never fails, it works. Because the play of the violonist is a perfect match for Galou's voice. I'm an atheist but I imagine that the protestant God, after the trap he set, would be much more convinced of Peter's beg if it's trembling, profoundly human.

actually Bach was a very religious man. so it is not "far away from any religion" but directly inspired by his Lutheran Christian religion. a lot of his works are intended for the divine service of the Lutheran Church. (this one included.)
Absolutely fabulous quality of singing by Mme Galou. Clearly the 21st Century equivalent of Julia Hamari, but with a depth and French elegance and warmth that counters and complements the Teutonic Protestant sincerity of Richter's work perfectly. Thank you for this joy.
Merci mademoiselle Galou. Merci infiniment.
Erbarme dich, mein Gott. Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! See here, before you heart and eyes weep bitterly. Have mercy, my God.
as dutch speaker I was wondering abouth the right translation of the word erbarme in this context.Have merci translated to dutch means Heb genade, wich means dont kill me,save me (in case of a lost battle or something). If I look to the word erbarme I see that its a combinated word from the words erb and arme.erb into dutch means erf what means surroundings (deep translation).Arme means armen, part of the body. In my opinion the person is in her or his last hour and is scared for death and ask God for omarmen(dutch)embrace her /him
@@jwijn No, the word "Erbarmen" (noun) has no connection to "Arm" (the limb). The verb "barmen" is independent from this and means "to lament", "to show / feel sympathy". So "have mercy" is actually a good, close translation.
I casually look up Erbame dich on RUclips as I feel like listening to it whilst fixing my breakfast. Andreas Scholl? Nah. I feel like something different. I choose another, more or less at random. The intro starts. Good. Then she starts singing. My head spins round. "What?!' And I stand there open-mouthed, transfixed at the beauty of her voice.
Such a heart wrenching pain. In these precise five minutes and fiftyseven seconds we have the most overwhelming desperation man can feel. Tonight I was feeling so down I decided that I had to listen to this piece to express my pain. Needless to say, voiceless screams came out of my mouth, the sweetest tears out of my eyes. I never enjoyed suffering this much. Art has the power to give sense to humans' sorrow by mutating it into something so beautiful, it destroys you. But you somehow manage to enjoy it so much you immediately want to repeat the experience. Thank you, Bach.
@Nicoló Anzivino - Wow your comment was so powerful; it brought a tear to mine own eyes. I hope your suffering does not continue to this day. But it is good that you can take some refuge in the power of Bach’s music.
Erbarme dich, mein Gott. English: Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! See here, before you heart and eyes weep bitterly. Have mercy, my God.

Bach is the supremely universal artist. I do sympathise with the feelings expressed by the Muslim listener. I am a Hindu and I too hear the voice of God in his music. The voice of beauty and reason in this threatened world!
Why are people obsessed with proclaiming what they do or don’t believe in. Just enjoy the utter beauty of Bach. We won the lottery of life and all its stunning beauty. Just enjoy while you can!
Good answer !! We can also listen Matthaus passion just for the beauty of the melody. "Haupt voll Blut und Wunden", also in this passion, is above everything, as well as this piece, without referring to the famous unknown "X" ...
Samuel Arthur After Bachs death, they forgot him long time too. Don't forget this please. Bach died on July 28, 1750. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's re-performance of the St. Matthew Passion on March 11, 1829 in the Berlin Singakademie is an initial spark for the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach's musical history.
I am very thankful for Mendelssohn to resurrect Bach's music otherwise we will be left without. Felixx Mendelssohn live less than 40 years and has given us so much - not just resurrecting Bach but please take some time of your busy schedule to listen to Bach's Violin & Mendelssohn Violin to praise the Almighty!!!
@Alfred Lewis Thank you for your comments about Mendelssohn and his role about Bach. I fully respect your faith. As for me, I can't pray a God so absent from this world of intolerance (not only today). Bach and Mendelssohn, my 2 favorite composers, fill this lack of sense because they are pure emotion. ( my english is not my mother tongue...)
These great performers perfectly understand Bach's aesthetic and spirit It will be a rigorous feeling. My soul felt a terrible impression, I felt grief , sorrow and suffering faded away. I pray that God,s blessing and glory will be given to all of you!

A bit too fast, but an excellent rendition anyway.

The other slow ones make sleep. The tempo is kinda in the Goldilock's zone.

I found this video by accident while searching for another song. What beautiful singing by Delphine Galou. How much do we need God's mercy!
¡FELICITACIONES!👏🎶
Hearing Bach is confirming the real existence of divinity, far away from any religion.
So beautifully worded. I completely agree. His music is truly sacred and reaches a part of my heart & soul that nothing else can.
actually Bach was a very religious man.
so it is not "far away from any religion" but directly inspired by his Lutheran Christian religion.
a lot of his works are intended for the divine service of the Lutheran Church. (this one included.)
Great example of divine intervention indeed..
This is by far the best performance of Erbahrme dich. A heartfelt prayer, this is sung from the heart 💓
No matter how many times I listen to this exceptional aria. Everything is better than the previous one.
Merci

Quelle musicalité dans cette voix ! Merci Delphine.
God, through this piece of music I can find peace, perfection and pleasure.
Absolutely fabulous quality of singing by Mme Galou. Clearly the 21st Century equivalent of Julia Hamari, but with a depth and French elegance and warmth that counters and complements the Teutonic Protestant sincerity of Richter's work perfectly. Thank you for this joy.
Bach is the most marvelous composer ever in all world...

Quelle voix .... émouvant

Un espace bleu entre les nuages
as dutch speaker I was wondering abouth the right translation of the word erbarme in this context.Have merci translated to dutch means Heb genade, wich means dont kill me,save me (in case of a lost battle or something). If I look to the word erbarme I see that its a combinated word from the words erb and arme.erb into dutch means erf what means surroundings (deep translation).Arme means armen, part of the body.
In my opinion the person is in her or his last hour and is scared for death and ask God for omarmen(dutch)embrace her /him
@@jwijn Yes its 'have mercy' erbarme dich or hab gnaden
@@jwijn No, the word "Erbarmen" (noun) has no connection to "Arm" (the limb). The verb "barmen" is independent from this and means "to lament", "to show / feel sympathy". So "have mercy" is actually a good, close translation.
@@HaraldLieder Thank you for the correction.Sometimes its hard to say where a word comes from. For example stunde is not german origine
Thank for a little story well told
@@emeegeeehen Thank you for your kind words. Let's all hope to find a moment of bliss and peace in this breath taking work of art.

Good answer !! We can also listen Matthaus passion just for the beauty of the melody. "Haupt voll Blut und Wunden", also in this passion, is above everything, as well as this piece, without referring to the famous unknown "X" ...
Perhaps it conjures their deep rooted faith and makes them them think about "what is god?"
because 250 years from now, no one will remember today's musician. God bless you Johann Sebastian Bach
Samuel Arthur After Bachs death, they forgot him long time too. Don't forget this please. Bach died on July 28, 1750. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's re-performance of the St. Matthew Passion on March 11, 1829 in the Berlin Singakademie is an initial spark for the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach's musical history.
if we are listening to this in 2018 clearly he wasn't forgotten.
thankyou so much for that information.

These great performers perfectly understand Bach's aesthetic and spirit
It will be a rigorous feeling. My soul felt a terrible impression, I felt grief , sorrow and suffering faded away. I pray that God,s blessing and glory will be given to all of you!

There is no need for a heaven when there is the St Mathew Passion by Bach :)
This singer has a lovely pure timbre to her voice which is generally only found in counter-tenors in my opinion.
Excellent tempo too!
I suspect Bach would not agree with you. He did write religious music because he believed in what it said, after all.

I agree there's no need for god! we have Bach and ourselves! not all of us though!
Great tempo and that is beautiful violin too. I would give just about anything to hear her sing Christ lag in Todesbanden.

Merci Delphine Galou !
Galou has such a expressive raw voice it shakes my soul to its foundations and leaves me questioning my very sanity. I beg for life on my knees as I'm overwhelmed by the strength and power of her singing. My God my God why hast thou forsaken me? But to die to the sound of this voice is more than anyone could ask for.
Oh my goodness, how can I describe the effect of this music, it just blew me away, the heavenly voice of this singer is really irresistible
What a voice...Ms Galou radiates wealth of melody, charm, depth that can't be captured, merely mimicked. The message in the lyrics is a Christian call for forgiveness at the time of death. The quartet, the voice and the conductor play a fabulous order of symmetry and beauty created by Master Bach and well established by these exceptionally talented musicians.
