It was only curious in the sense that it was wondering if it could get away with grabbing the free meat hanging out the side of the car. Everything in this video suggest to me that it was building up to an attack. It showed little fear and was testing what it could get away with. Given enough time, that hyena would have nipped. Animals don't always broadcast their intention to attack. Sometimes it is a split second decision that comes out of the blue. That's why seasoned animal handlers that seemingly should have known better can and frequently do get nipped. They never saw it coming because there were no signs. That is why you never leave a wild animal encounter to chance, particularly with animals as powerful as these. The default should always be "this thing can bite, I should keep my distance."

If every tourist starts sticking their hand or leg out of their vehicle and invite another accident, who is to be blamed? The person was clearly encouraging the hyena to cross the red line by sticking his hand out and that is not acceptable behavior in most of the parks I know. I remember reading about a scene where a pack of wolves that had never seen what a horse was before meeting one for the first time, they reacted exactly like this, not aggressive, just stared curiously while keeping some distance. While this may seem strange it actually makes sense, you can't just eat anything you like, you have to factor in effort given (hunting/gathering) and whether something is edible (poisoning) and even with the latter it's not always just a case of whether the target evolved to be fatal to eat, you could swallow the wrong part and die after due to something like vitamin overdoes, there are 2 cases of this happening in humans, so the Hyenas' response makes sense when you look at this data, they see pale skinned white humans (sitting inside a big weird thingy I might add) and are curious but not sure what to do with it so instead just sniff a bit and then move on to something else
Theres also the: will this thing kill me Factor when they hunt. A modern horse is quite big, and can easily kill a hyena. Now, granted they would take it down but probs not without casualties. Just shows the intelligence of these animals.
Behold, the RUclips comment section...where experts and analysts all somehow post their comments about animal handing on someone's vacation. Yea..... such geniuses much to be learned from a comment
Highkey Activated hyenas are incredibly intelligent. Those two in particular probably seen more humans than you think. And probably watched their pack or so ignore humans. The hyena in the title image is so cute that I saw it right away. Thanks to the footage you took, I was able to see the friendly hyenas up close. I was attracted to the humorous look of hyenas.
That was very dumb to stick your hand near a wild hyena.

A hyena wouldn't bite you.
They're too smart. You aren't a prey, you're an alien to them.
They didn't look hunting, just curious. Also attacking a human has a high record of ending in death for the hyena. Not a worthy risk.
They're just playful, curious because that isn't usual for them.

Which makes them being so close to this guys forearm really nailbiting.
Yep
Yes they do. They don't have super sharp teeth their teeth are bone crushing. They can turn bone in to dust. Their jaws are scary strong.
I'd rather encounter a hyena than a lion.
I can't get over how huge these animals are, one of my favorite species to exist right there
Today humans are more dangerous and untrustworthy than wild animals are ! The hyena was curious and showed no aggression... amazing.
Exactly
@@Skippy19812 Just because it was sniffing him doesn't mean it was going to rip his arm off. If the hyena really wanted to it would've done so already, but it didn't. It was probably their first time seeing human contact which is why the hyena's were being curious and cautious. Just look at when the dude simply moved his arm a little, both of the hyena's backed off.
I've encountered coyotes, raccoons, opossums, etc.. while hiking in California and all of those animals just left me alone. Once in Safari vehicle, tourists are not supposed to stick out any part of their body like this. This is violation of basic norms of behavior in the bush. Absolutely idiotic on that tourist to do so. This promotes bad behavior in the wild animals. The hyena was clearly sensing flesh and blood and was certainly beginning to think of the hand as food. The idiot should be thankful his hand didn’t get amputated. If the hyena bit him poor animal would have had to be destroyed for no fault of his
He is a ranger with a decade in the Safari, no a tourist. Also, it seems that you don't have knowledge of how Hyena behaviour works.
Leijona Oneiroi are you implying that rangers are exempted from the basic rules that the tourists are expected to follow? Or are you saying that the hyena doesn’t like to chew on a ranger’s hand more than he likes to chew on a tourists hand? Rangers are expected to be role models for the tourists. If every tourist starts sticking their hand or leg out of their vehicle and invite another accident, who is to be blamed? The person was clearly encouraging the hyena to cross the red line by sticking his hand out and that is not acceptable behavior in most of the parks I know. What does my knowledge hyena behavior have to do with it?

You're right broo these people doesn't know what they talking about
Marwan Abuhasan There is a video of Kruger park rangers encouraging one of their ranger friends who ran at an elephant and spooked him. Are you now going to make an argument that that behavior is acceptable just because they are rangers, you moron??? I am not saying this ranger is like them. I have many respectable ranger friends who walk what they talk. So give some rationale why it is acceptable for a ranger to do so and not a tourist or STFU.
Imagine such gentle adorable creature has the bite force to crush your wrist and bones in 1 second.

Lovely Hyenas , so adorable !
Exactly, you couldn’t describe it better, for them it’s like if humans saw aliens or something
They may even not perceive the vehicle and humans as separate, but as one entity
Yeah that a really good explanation!
Theres also the: will this thing kill me
Factor when they hunt. A modern horse is quite big, and can easily kill a hyena. Now, granted they would take it down but probs not without casualties. Just shows the intelligence of these animals.
2 cases over tens of billions over history is beyond insignificant. choose another example.
Omg look how gentle the hyena is when sniffing around and when touching the hand with it's nose... Hollyyyyy ....

Highkey Activated hyenas are incredibly intelligent. Those two in particular probably seen more humans than you think. And probably watched their pack or so ignore humans.
