I love how she puts her paw on his foot as if to demonstrate to her kids,”And this is a large human mammal! They built this paved path and roam everywhere but know not to mess with us or else they’ll be sprayed!”
They could be the forest police. Older skunk with few trainees. She said hello to the cyclist (by putting her paw on his shoe), she then checked the tire pressure in front wheel and that was it. Judging by the color or uniform/fur they could really be the police. I'm not sure. I got little confused when she said "this is a large human mammal...".

Yeah duh, it's a fun story inspired by a moment in a video, not everyone thinks their every word is reality, people can say things they thought of while at the same time understanding that it's fiction.

That's how they hunt, this is why they are called "earth-sharks", they do that to look bigger and stronger for big enemies just before jump over they and kill them with their cuteness.

Nothing halts everyone in their tracks like a wandering skunk! In the late 1960s my family went to a production of “The Shepherd of the Hills” at Silver Dollar City. You had to walk down a dirt trail to get to the rustic outdoor amphitheater with split-log benches for the audience, which was set in the middle of a woods. About halfway through the play, the actors suddenly stopped speaking and froze in place, as if someone had pushed the pause button on a TV remote. It soon became evident why: a skunk had wandered onstage, where it proceeded to sniff around curiously, checking out the actors as they remained motionless. The audience also quieted as people became aware of the visitor, and everyone - including kids like me - became perfectly still when the skunk left the stage and went down into the audience, taking its time meandering down the center aisle and often pausing to examine the shoes of some nervous person. Its curiosity satisfied, it finally wandered down the trail and disappeared into the woods, at which point the actors unfroze and resumed the play exactly where they had left off. Very funny in retrospect!

People should stop being so nervous around skunks. they only ever spray people if they feel threatened and are cornered. Like most animals if it doesn't feel safe in a situation, it will just run away.

I love how they all want to be so close to mama she can’t even walk straight.
This makes it harder for birds of prey to pick out a target. Eagles (by day) and owls (by night) are a serious threat to any kit that gets isolated from the scrum, and both types of birds have learned tactics to avoid getting sprayed when striking. Land predators tend to avoid skunks even when they're tiny :P.

See this is why I dont like going out.
I'm constantly reminded how small minded people can be. As someone who grew up in the country, all animals are such curious and passive creatures if you give them reason to be.
I met a juvenile skunk July 4th, he was at first startled of course, but once he realized I was less scary than the fireworks he just sat and chilled with me until they stopped.
I saw a deer crossing an empty road early morning, and although she definitely didn't trust me at first. Me standing still caused her to become curious, had my sister not gotten so excited she probably would've walked right up to us instead of hopping away.
My Dad saw a mountain lion deep in the trail. They were equally surprised as each other. He remained calm, and it gave him a sniff from a few hundred feet away, and decided he wasn't trouble so they walked back into the forest.
It's not as simple as, "smell this" "do this." All animals are intelligent. And rule number one of the animal kingdom, eye for an eye. You stay calm, I stay calm. You start causing a ruckus, I cause a ruckus. You try to attack, I'll try to attack. You'd be surprised how far simple empathy can take you.
Very cool comment, totally agree. People give snakes a bad rap too, but all snakes I've been around only want to get away from you. There was one black rat snake I became sort of friendly with because I worked at a camp and he chose the same spot in the middle of a crossroad to sunbathe every day. I'd get called on the radio to pick him up like he was my kid staying too late after school lmao. After a while he'd see me coming and I can imagine him going "alright, hold your horses" and he'd slither just off path on his own.
@@saladnander3690 You were lucky to not have slipped and fall into a snake den when you were child. They were just getting ready for winter, but the sudden appearance of a little kid dropping from above on them scared them enough to bite me. Found out that day that I had the rare allergy to snake bites that day. (They were nonvenomous)
I don't blame them now, but it took 20 years of therapy for me to stop seeing them as monsters, and even now I still can't fully shake my fear of them, especially as if they are the bigger and longer ones. And yet I've been accused of many things, a lot of them horrible, for not liking them or seeing them as innocent.
It's not always small-mindedness that drives a person to see things about a creature a certain way: sometimes it's simply survival instinct. I could very easily die if a snake bites me again.
What really needs to happen is to non-conform to one side or the other: find that it's a balance. Accept that the animal has the choice to fight, flight or freeze just as much as you do. Be prepared to know what to do for all instances. And accept that survival instinct is bias for our safety, but let knowledge guide us.
That's certainly what this bicycle guy did with the skunks and her kits
Disclaimer: doesn't reliably work with large predators. Staying calm next to a grizzly or tiger will only get you so far
I wouldn't say ALL animals lol. A lion's curiosity will probably lead to you being lunch. But yeah, I've hand fed a squirrel before. I got down on all fours and held out a piece of bread and stood completely still. It slowly inched forward and would stop, contemplating if I was a threat. Finally it came up and starting eating the bread and put its claw (VERY sharp btw even tho it was gentle) on my finger as it ate. Then some random kids saw and started laughing and running towards us and it bolted. I've also had a bird at a campsite I go to for family reunions chill with us at the picnic table like nothing. we even found we were RIGHT next to its next at the canopy area, and it would occasionally fly to the nest to check and then come back close to us. I'm assuming the bird was accustomed to human interaction (it being a campsite.) we took pictures and named it George lol. Haven't been there in a few years so I haven't seen George since then, unfortunately

I found it cute how the mother didnt perceive the man as a threat and let the babies come up and sniff him.
actually they were all on alert, their tails were all up, but they kept it pretty neutral, but I wouldn't say they were relaxed, he was probably a cough or a sneeze away from having a really bad week. its kinda impressive he kept so still and quiet, but I guess had he done anything else this video would have been really different and we would all be grateful for the lack of olfactory technology...

A family of skunks lives in the pool area that my condo overlooks. Never caused any trouble, they're basically fellow residents lol.
I have a little family living next to our property and I found them (skunks) to be nothing but helpful! They get rid of all the pests and keep venomous snakes away... What more could you want in a neighbor?! Not to mention, they are adorable!

Skunks are pretty cool if you just give them some space. And they’re super cute, too. It’s bad news if they spray near or on you or your dog, though.

I grew up in the country and skunks are well known for having diseases. Many of them are rabid and you have to be exceptionally careful around skunks. I've never been sprayed bad enough, but I learned early on to keep your distance. And sometimes being out in the country that's really hard because they suddenly sneak up on you. They're hilariously funny the way they jump through the weeds so you just see them almost popping up out of the weeds and then back down and then hopping back up again. But I would never ever want anyone to get close to an animal like this. Just can't believe they didn't spray him. I've been six feet away and they've started to spray before. And you just run the other way. As fast as you can because that smell carries. Even if you didn't get sprayed you will smell for weeks.

it's almost impossible to describe the smell. it's like burning cabbage, burning rubber, vinegar, celery, farts, and paint fumes, ALL AT ONCE. the smell hits you like a battering ram--it has an almost physical presence.
