HE kissed him because he called him a fruit cake so he wanted to show him what fruit cakes do And he was treating him like he was gay so he said I'm gonna show you gay
@CurtDaniel1000 homophobia was a prejudice shared by both races at the time. Sunshine highlighted prejudice is prejudice whether based on race or sexual orientation.
Um buddy his accident was as bad as depicted the only difference was he was injured after the season coming home from an awards banquet. He was paralyzed from the chest down after.
I was 11 years old and living in Charles County Maryland across the POTOMAC RIVER from Alexandria Va. The Titans changed the viewpoint of the ENTIRE Region. I remember seeing at Titan games buses with tags from as far North as Pennsylvania and West Virginia. And many cars from North Carolina who supported Boone for years after the 1971 13-0 season. We credit the Titans with influencing the Washington Redskins who many players from them and The Baltimore Colts came to watch them play. The 'SKINS rode that Titan wave in the community all the way to The Superbowl VII Iin January of 1972. I still have autographs from REDSKINS LARRY BROWN, Jack Pardee, Pat Fischer, Charley Taylor, George Allen, COLTS- Bubba Smith, Chuck Hinton Don Shula and many others all at Titan Games.
Sunshine kissed Gerry to get underneath his skin for calling him a fruit cake. Sunshine know he came from a racist background. Even tho Sunshine came along after they all were starting to set their differences aside and become a team and even friends I believe he wanted to be somewhat of a distraction and deflect the attention from the black players to him. He’s a real one for that, he knew moving to Virginia was going to be a challenge and back then even racist whites had problems with white hippies & Jewish ppl as well.
You have to remember though about that car accident that this was before a lot of the safety standards were put into place. Injuries that are minor now were severe back in the day. Plus nobody wore seat belts back then.
The people in Alexandria Virginia are a close people, when the state integrated the schools it was a big shock and in northern virginia football and sports are what bring them together. An the blending of both black and white brought many winning seasons and grew many bonds and made bonds that have lasted centuries.
My sister was a cheerleader (28:45 in the middle with the white headband) and this movie and my mom and I were extras. I remember being in the stands all night on during the filming. But it was so awesome to see them out there! My sister got to take a picture with Ryan Goessling, Donald Faison, and Denzel Washington.
@@ijustgame6682I believe in him more than believing you. Movies normally use a *crapton* of extras including minor roles. Not hard to believe his family was involved in the movie.
@@Skrulzie Facts. I was an extra in another football movie, We Are Marshall. They put out casting notices and you just fill out a form, send in a picture and make yourself available. Extras are always in demand for film.
Fun fact: the guy who was playing the country music was in the Mickey Mouse Club On Disney Channel and was happily singing Jodeci( an R&B group from the 90’s) right along side of Justin Timberlake. 😂…
I worked in a movie theater while finishing high school when this came out. I watched the ending 17 times waiting to clean the theater before I ever saw the whole thing, & cried EVERY time lol. Such a good movie. So many people just starting out who went onto have crazy careers. Bertier's actor Ryan Hurst sticks out the most because I just rewatched Sons of Anarchy & it's crazy to think that's Opie!! And Beta from The Walking Dead. Hayden Panatierre was a baby!!!!!!! Gosling too lol! And Louie was my favorite character, still is!!!!!!! Soundtrack on this was great too! Disney got this one right & Im so glad!!
The term "daddy" has been highly hypersexualized in the past few years. In the context of the time and situation, it was plainly apparent that Coach was son-ing him and laying down his authority. But with modern connotations, it really isn't surprising that it made you uncomfortable. Also, I believe Sunshine kissed Gary as a get back for the "fruitcake" comment and just stuck with the bit with Petey. Just speculation on my end, but I thought it was to prove the point that even if he was attracted to men, it shouldn't matter, just like how their race shouldn't matter. In all seriousness, this is one of my favorite films, and I'm glad y'all watched it and enjoyed it. Hope y'all have a wonderful day.
The fact that it’s your guy’s first time watching this movie is crazy man when I was a kid whenever we had a chance to watch a movie it was always this one
34:02 That happened in the 70’s when cars were made of steel. He got hit on the driver’s side by a truck moving 45-55 mph. Being paralyzed was a miracle! No airbags, no seatbelt laws, none of that.
My Father showed this to me when I was a child. It made a huge impact on how I treated others. I had friends of all races at the time and this movie made me feel proud of that.
In real life, Gerry played in the championship game. His accident was sometime after. He was heavily recruited to both Notre Dame and Alabama to name a couple. 1971 HS player of the year.
A few events were altered for the movie. The final game wasn't even close. TC Williams blew Marshall away. But that would not have been dramatic enough for the movie. Also, Gary played in the championship game. His accident happened after it. I love this movie so much.
Portion of this movie was filmed in Marietta Georgia and kids from local high schools were used as extras for the football game scenes. Everyone got a T-shirt.
This movie is very good at portraying the real story. Here are two things the movie makers changed. The title game was not close at all though there was a game earlier in the season that was very close. Gerry Bertier was not killed by a drunk driver; it was some kind of design flaw in the vehicle he was in that caused his fatal accident.
Thanks for the reaction! Couple of things I found interesting.. In real life they threw a toilet through his window and Sheryl wasn't there. A toilet is crazy though!! Also, the games were blowouts… The Titans were beasts! T.C. Williams High School was desegregated in 1965, six years before the Titans won state. By that point, racial tensions were still high, but they were said to not be as violent as depicted in the movie and I read that some players said they were fighting more amongst each other about their positions than race .. and alot of teams were already integrated at that point..not to say they weren't facing racisms in their every day lives! I’m SURE they were. A woman who was a teacher at the time said that the adults were worse than the kids. Gerry got paralyzed after the final game in a motorcycle accident Coach had 4 daughters and he wasn’t happy that the movie only wanted to depict one of them but the other siblings gave the OK… Perhaps as a tribute to their late sister as Sheryl passed from a heart condition... but none of them were as into football as depicted.. not even Sheryl Gerry’s girlfriend in the movie and his racist bestie were fictional. Gerry did have a real girlfriend at the time who was his neighbor..The Gettysburg scene was beautiful but fictional. They did take a trip to Gettysburg Pennsylvania for a training camp though. They just didn’t have a 3 AM runs where they ended up on the battlefield.
38:25 It’s based off a true story but changed a little bit for Hollywood. They were undefeated and won the State Championship that year… HOWEVER, they won the actual Championship game by a blowout. It wasn’t even close. You know the game where the opposing coach called them monkeys? That was the only game that actually came down to the wire in real life. They made the Championship game close for a storyline with high stakes.
