THANKS for taking the time to do this, Markus. I recently sold my Canon XA70 to B&H because I could not find a video like this that could help me dial up the video settings correctly. Your recommended video settings for the Lumix G7 are fantastic, so I have no doubt this would have solved my issue with the XA70.
"Story is more important than great," said my instructors through college 50 years ago. They were correct then and you've proved them correct again, especially with viewing taking place on our pocket screens more than any other device. Thanks for checking these camcorders out, it's surprising that there is so little difference between sensor sizes these days. Okay, back to making my stories better!
Back in 2010s, I used to own a Canon G10 camcorder. It was fantastic for capturing family memories. Later, I switched to a 4K hybrid camera, thinking it would deliver better images. However, looking back at the footage now, I realize the 1080p recordings from the G10 are actually clearer and more stable than my 4K shots. Much better family memories than those I recorded later. I regret not sticking with the G10, even though carrying two devices was inconvenient. Now I don't use hybrid cameras but record with my phone, which has great footage for that purpose.
I love the fact that you are one of the few people who review camcorders. Hopefully you can answer my question because I bought a Panasonic camcorder and it occasionally loses focus, so I think that I am going to change. I take videos of trains that move between 10mph and 70mph. Can you suggest maybe a couple of different camcorders that you think that would do the job please? Maybe a small sensor one and a large sensor one? I think that the autofocus is the most important item since some of the trains move so quickly. If you are able to, much appreciated, but if not, I understand sir. Thanks, Eric
MarkusPix ... I used the G70 settings you uploaded some month back in my XA50 ... been doing so ever since, I thanked you back whenever that was. Gonna use the new setting in my 2nd. user preset on my XA50 that you tweaked for the XA70 📽. XA50 is really a XA70 or visa versa ... don't know of any differences. Thanks MarkusPix ... the factory setting (color science) in the XA50 scared me half to death, yuk. Totally enjoy shooting with the camera now 🎬
This has got to be the best service to the community I've ever seen. Bought a rather expensive piece of equipment, at viewer request, did an excellent review, and just gave a ton back to everyone. Cheers Markus.
These are brilliant camcorders. One of the unique aspects of camcorders is the ability to able to keep focus when zooming. One thing to note when showing any camcorder footage on RUclips is that the quality of the footage gets compressed. Unfortunately. Awesome review Markus. I would love to get another prosumer camcorder. I used to own a Canon G40
Great comparison-also appreciate the Sony info at the end. As a skateboarder, it does make me sad to see these handle-less, though, lol. We’ve been utilizing the handle for low angle follow filming since the Sony CCD-VX3 (and the VHS “dad cams” before that) and it’s something I miss when I shoot mirror less or DSLR because I have to add my own-gets clunky. That being said, I know for your use case they’re not needed. Nice that they give you an option to disconnect. 😀
Markus, because of your videos, I've been on a compulsive kick for years, picking up different camcorders from flea markets and yard sales. I've found that I like the smaller, lighter, long zoom camcorders more than the larger, more expensive ones. The quality of the video is good enough for me at 1080P, and I love the longer zoom range.
2 - an interesting note about the G-XA camcorders from Canon - the film director Hong Sang-soo has been using a Canon XA60 camcorder (small sensor, not 1") for his recent movies that have done well at international film festivals and have played at movie theaters in US. One of the very few filmmakers using prosumer camcorders to make fiction features. Check out his movie In Front of Your Face - you'll recognize the Canon prosumer look.
¡Valla asta que mire un muy buen video bien explicado y sin tanto rodeo directamente al grano refiriendose realmente a sus funciones y ventajas de la XA70, Thank you Marcus for the time you took to explain in detail the qualities of the two camcorders.
Markus. That you for being a champion of camcorders. Camcorders, along with certain bridge cameras, and some cinema cameras (like the JVC LS300 and the Panasonic AF100) are interests of mine.
It depends on your viewing medium. Phone screen? Probably won't notice it. Play it at bigger screen like laptop, desktop or tv, you are going to notice the noise more. It's not like day vs night difference more like sunset vs night difference
@@trym2121 Well my phone has a 1440p display (3120x1440), and I set the video resolution to 4K. RUclips mobile has an option to zoom into a video up to 8x, so I think the visible detail should be about the same as on a larger monitor - it's just that I'm viewing a smaller area at a time.

Love those shirts you have Markus. Great review with the Canon. I have the now old Panasonic X1000 and would like to see it compared to the newer shiny X1500 and X2000. Somehow I feel the old X1000 is still the best. 🤠
The XF100 was my favorite camcorder back in 2011. Used it all the way up until 2017 for BTS and event stuff. Made the mistake of selling it. Got a G21 in 2018 to replace it, and made that work for a few years for tons of ENG type stuff. The problem I have with them trying to combine the XF100 and XA series cameras with the XA70 is that they removed the manual control buttons from the side and bottom of the camera that existed on the XF100. If you're operating the camera filming other people, and not using it on a lock off, the manual control buttons are a big thing to have, instead of having to dive into the menus. I have an XF604 now, but ended up buying an XF100 (found the last one new in box on the planet I think), for situations where I need 1080 only but don't need all the bells of my FX cameras. I would be so happy if they put the XF605 sensor in the exact same body as the XF100 and the XF200. The XF605 is kind of big and clunky. That said, I'm hoping to see a Z90V update more than anything, just because I'm more into Sony right now than I am Canon. Z90V update with S-Cinetone and better AF is what I really want.
Fantastic video! Thanks much for your settings advice; I'm not sure where I could learn that stuff. One note: on my XA70, CP2 is "Wide DR." So I applied your settings to CP5 (USER05) on my camera.
Well. It's all very interesting. Thank you for the comparison. But, I'm sticking with my Sony FDR-AX700. I do lots of time lapse and high speed video. For me the AX700 works great for that.
Doing mainly photography, I do like the softer bokeh on the XA70 better comparison starting from 4:25 look at the highlights in the plants on the right side of your head. But maybe not for twice the price...
HI Markus, I am wondering what camcorder would you recommend to film an indoor event. Church type of speaking event. Also it would be used for filming content for social media. Would the Panasonic x1500 be good enough for this task? Thanks for your help.
Just got my XA70 thanks to this review. SUPER helpful. One note that’s probably obvious but it took me a little hunting around: the camera comes preset to “Auto” (top-right side next to Zoom rocker). To customize settings, this must be moved and set to “Manual”. Question: when it’s on Manual it still seems to operate and adjust to lighting changes automatically. So just how much of the camera is “Manual” when it’s on manual mode? (I’m used to a fancier Sony NX100 and you have to adjust EVERYTHING manually when not in automatic mode).
Thank you for the custom settings on the XA70 Markus! I have an HF-G60 that should be identical to that camcorder minus the higher rez screen and usb c port. In high contrast outdoor light I also like to use a profile with the log color space and crank up the saturation and black to compensate. Kind of like loading a lut manually so no need for post processing. I like to have the camera shoot the video the way I want it to look and not have to mess with it in post. Curious if you could get good results with using log and tweaking the variable other settings as well.
Thanks for this Markus! I have the XA70, and I'm curious to see how it stacks up directly against the AX100 and Z90V, if you wouldn't mind? By the way, I used your G70 settings on the XA70, and even those make a nice improvement. I'll try your adjusted settings specifically for the XA70. Thanks for that too!
Would it be better to use a modern mirrorles camera rather than a camcorder with a tiny sensor? Of course If camera can do prores or similar video codec rather than only H.264 video codec.
@@MarkusPix Still a bit on the bulky side for me... i like the v180 size i now have a v380 which is same size and a slight step up in quality if anyone knows any 1080 60fps camcorders that are the same size and decent upgrade from the v380 please let me know.
@@CamcorderHomeVideos Yes! I just fear they have abandoned camcorders apart from the big clunky ones aimed at middle aged men trying to impress people lol.
Hey Marcus, I was wondering if the G70 has clean HDMI out and if it will output 4k30 over HDMI that could be externally recorded. Also would want to confirm that the autofocus still works etc when outputting via HDMI. I have a specific use case for a camcorder where external recording 4k30 would be required so I'm looking for the best option. Thanks in advance!
I do a lot of nighttime forest exploration. Do you know of any great camcorders that work great for low-no light and actually pick up detail? Right now, I'm working on an IR spheres to help because flashlights ruin the shot. But finding cameras that actually record well in these settings instead of just saying they do would be great. I have already bought 12 that were supposedly excellent at this, and all failed.
@collapsingruins thank you. If I was more capable I'd try to make one myself. Back in 2015 I had a mini camera that was surprisingly capable. But it exploded from overheating. I haven't found anything comparable since. I'll look into your suggestions.
If one puts a filter (say a polarizing) on the camcorder, then puts the lenshade with the cool flippy-cover back on, does it vignette? (If so, how much do you have to zoom in before the vignetting goes away?) Thanks!
Based on one of your videos a few months ago I bought a Panasonic V981 for $800. It was everything you said it is! BUT, its implementation of external mics I found atrocious. So I returned it. I bought a used V785 for $300, which is the same camera in 1080. LOVE the camera. But again, audio implementation--especially the fact that the mic input is behind the LCD screen. I found a nifty device from Comica, the Linkflex AD1, which allows me to use dynamic mics. I did a video on it recently. But pain remains... The mic input behind the LCD screen. So I too have been very interested in the G70 and XA70--so thanks for doing this video. They're still big camcorders compared to the V785. Is the G70 worth it? It's 6 years newer so I'm sure the touch screen is nice compared to the very sluggish V785. The only other 1/2.3 option is the Sony AX43. But maybe that has audio issues too.
I have a Sony AX700, it takes excellent video, I'm thinking of getting a second Sony AX700 or getting the Canon XA70, which of the 2 would you say has a bit better video quality, I'm getting a 2nd camcorder but want to decide between those 2.
Hi Markus, I know you like the Panasonic vx981 - I didn’t realise it but after watching a recent video of yours I remembered I bought the vx881 back in 2015 for a trip. Would it be worth to upgrade to the 981 or should I just dig out my 881 from my storage unit? 🙂
@@MarkusPix I’m terrible sorry, it was a few days between me looking up the camera I had and writing the comment. The camera I have is the HC-VX870. I knew it was the 800-line but got the details wrong. I’m sorry. The question still stands - do you know if it’s worth upgrading from the 870 to the 981?
Shocking to see you toss the top handle aside. I keep the top handle on my XA70 because it's easier to carry and XLR with a Small Diaphragm Condenser (SDC) mic sounds much better than 3.5mm.
6:40 I have a 2K monitor, no reason to full screen a video that's 4K anyway because I use the extra space. and on a 1080 it works fine. Honestly the slight noise in the low light shots doesn't bother me in the slightest.
The auto ND filter on the G70 is a real, built-in physical ND It reduces the amount of light entering the camera's sensor by using a physical filter, rather than just adjusting the gain or exposure settings electronically.
3 - G70 is more fun, smaller. When I had both cams (G70 and XA50) I would grab the G70 more often for filming stuff. Either cam can work for an indie fiction feature.
Would you consider doing a comparison of camcorders with IR Night Vision? It gets a bad rap for something being only useful for ghost hunters, but it's the only way that I know of to be able to shoot where visible light is not permitted. I am often asked to film rsearchers at night as they work with sea turtles in Florida. During sea turtle nesting season, most visible light is not permitted on our beaches and so I end up having to rely on IR Night Vision. I've been using Sony FDR-AX100s, but would like to know how well other cameras perform in IR mode: Canon, Panasonic, etc. There aren't many resources that compare the IR Night Vision on various camcorders.
Sir, I noticed on these 4K Canon camcorders in manual audio settings they offer wide option, Is "WIDE" basically the same thing as omnidirectional mic 🤔(You see Marcus I'm a lot like you I want to grab a high-quality resolution camcorder and not all this bulky microphone, dead cat, handles and stuff cluttered piled on top of each other 😆✌

Thanks for calling me a middle aged man in my 40s for piping the pixels in a large screen 🤣😂. Overall i think even if the quality is oblivious better, its not worth x2 the price at least for consumer base buyer.
I always thought back it was larger the lense the brighter your video will be, like a bincoular where its larger the lense the brighter it will be? turn out its just the sensor but it seem that my S23 for just 800 dollar its brighter then both low light... I wonder why?
I'm disappointed to see that easy-to-use consumer-level camcorders are being overlooked by the various other camera types - most of which are either more expensive cameras, or are in other segments entirely like action cams. Anything that could be in a $300-500 price range is basically fulfilled by ancient Full HD camcorders that are several years old and little more than $200, or you have to bump up to the 4k camera category at $800 and more. These brands will sit on a model for several years before introducing a replacement to fill that slot. We're losing something if we have to fill that slot with an action cam or smartphone. I'd like to see something like a nextgen Panasonic VX3K or Sony CX405, but new, can do 4K60, and has a modern SD card slot, microphone jack, horse shoe mount, and USB-C connection.
I want to like Canon, they all have great ergonomics, but their DSLR cameras all have some weird annoying lack of something. These two camcorders are nice though.

Hey Markus, i hope you can get your hands on the Sony PXW-Z200, I'm interested in seeing what you think about it.

The increased sharpness of the XA70 is noticeable. With the G70 the subject lacks detail and as such appears softer.
Softer might be desirable if an older person with wrinkles 😅
Good stuff! The CP3 is that LOG3?? Thanks...
no it stands for custom profile 3
@MarkusPix so xa70 has no clog3? Do u have to update firmware?? How? Thanks.
Can u also do a custom settings for JVC 200 or 170, please this will be a very helpful. Thanks!
What are your thoughts on the iPhone 16 pro camera?
ruclips.net/video/Fn0IBlb8GQg/видео.htmlsi=hjxcRU99TplM-crI
How about the image stabilization? Handheld on fast moving subjects?
Thanks for the comparison Markus. I'm more interested in the G70. If compare the G70 with the Panasonic HS-X1500, which one would you recommend?
I'm a Panasonic guy, but in this case I'd say the G70. That's just me though.
midle aged man with giant screen here 🙋♂. thanks for the 4K :)
If one puts a filter (say a polarizing) on the camcorder, then puts the lenshade with the cool flippy-cover back on, does it vignette? (If so, how much do you have to zoom in before the vignetting goes away?) Thanks!
I doubt it would because it would vignette even without the filter if it did
I am really hoping these settings will help with my G60... I tried the G70 custom settings and was not pleased with the results. It seemed too orange.
XA70 look really great for a camcorder.
Thank you!
I've got the ax33 but it won't zoom in on bumblebees I think all the phones have backlit ccds now so pretty amazing
Which one would be best for following fast running dogs?
I have a Sony AX700, it takes excellent video, I'm thinking of getting a second Sony AX700 or getting the Canon XA70, which of the 2 would you say has a bit better video quality, I'm getting a 2nd camcorder but want to decide between those 2.
Hi Markus, I know you like the Panasonic vx981 - I didn’t realise it but after watching a recent video of yours I remembered I bought the vx881 back in 2015 for a trip. Would it be worth to upgrade to the 981 or should I just dig out my 881 from my storage unit? 🙂
Never heard of an 881. Are you in a different country?
@@MarkusPix I’m terrible sorry, it was a few days between me looking up the camera I had and writing the comment. The camera I have is the HC-VX870. I knew it was the 800-line but got the details wrong. I’m sorry.
The question still stands - do you know if it’s worth upgrading from the 870 to the 981?

I love this Channel and I love Camcorders. I'm still using a Canon LEGRIA HFS-21.
Excellent 🙏🏼🔎😃
Shocking to see you toss the top handle aside. I keep the top handle on my XA70 because it's easier to carry and XLR with a Small Diaphragm Condenser (SDC) mic sounds much better than 3.5mm.
the XLR handle is great.
6:40 I have a 2K monitor, no reason to full screen a video that's 4K anyway because I use the extra space. and on a 1080 it works fine. Honestly the slight noise in the low light shots doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Markus do either have infrared night vision?
The XA 70 does you can even option for white or green 🤭
Is the auto ND filter on the G70 a real in camera ND filter or is it just a gain change. What about the older G30?
The auto ND filter on the G70 is a real, built-in physical ND It reduces the amount of light entering the camera's sensor by using a physical filter, rather than just adjusting the gain or exposure settings electronically.
@@MarkusPix On a bright day the ND filters on my XA70 give a blue tint
A great comparison - question -> what is the counterpart from Sony to this both guys :)
I showed them at the end
3 - G70 is more fun, smaller. When I had both cams (G70 and XA50) I would grab the G70 more often for filming stuff. Either cam can work for an indie fiction feature.
I personally always go for the smaller lighter thing too if I can.
Why do none of these camcorders record 2160p60? I'd really like 60 frames per second
Lol I am a mid-age man 😂 thank you for the great review!
Sir, I noticed on these 4K Canon camcorders in manual audio settings they offer wide option, Is "WIDE" basically the same thing as omnidirectional mic 🤔(You see Marcus I'm a lot like you I want to grab a high-quality resolution camcorder and not all this bulky microphone, dead cat, handles and stuff cluttered piled on top of each other 😆✌
STill waiting for your take on canon c00 mark I. mAY BE COMPARE IT TO CANON C100

I use a gopro for my videos -would love your opinion on that :)❤
This is camcorder pandemonium! 🎉
@MarkusPix, please do FujiFilm X100 vs Sony RX100 vs Ricoh GR series comparisions. Pretty please. XOXO
Why low light difference is so small? Those look actually the same.
If they only have a 1 inch sensor then I prefer the tiny RX100. :)
Thanks for calling me a middle aged man in my 40s for piping the pixels in a large screen 🤣😂. Overall i think even if the quality is oblivious better, its not worth x2 the price at least for consumer base buyer.
XA 70 prosumer pro semi pro run & gun eng!!! G70 strictly family guy imho, 👍 I my self not in eng but looking to put an XA70 in my stable ✌️
I've got the canon camcorder 70 i love it
thanks for the video Be safe and skilful. Pinge
I thought that both looked like crap and then i checked youtube resolution. It was on 360p by some reason 😂

I always thought back it was larger the lense the brighter your video will be, like a bincoular where its larger the lense the brighter it will be?
turn out its just the sensor
but it seem that my S23 for just 800 dollar its brighter then both low light... I wonder why?
Sensor and pixel size
These are good camcorders and a good review. Can someone suggest the cheapest 4k camcorder with at least an APSC sized sensor?
Sony FS5
@@MarkusPix thanks. Anything which is currently in production?
Nice
I wonder what % of videographers picked a DSLR over camcorders, thinking people can see the difference on a 6" phone screen or even a 55" tv
Interesting, but out of my budget
xa70 gonna take as much space as a full frame camera with 28-105 lenn, maybe more
I'm disappointed to see that easy-to-use consumer-level camcorders are being overlooked by the various other camera types - most of which are either more expensive cameras, or are in other segments entirely like action cams.
The XLR handle disrespect was totally unnecessary 🤪🤪
So strange to hear good words about Canon coming from Markus. As far as i remember he hates Canon...
I want to like Canon, they all have great ergonomics, but their DSLR cameras all have some weird annoying lack of something. These two camcorders are nice though.
