@@zalrickalso the only character in that series rich enough to afford a last name (Beifongs excluded). Oh and I guess Varrick, who is rich as well. Only billionaires get last names in the ATLA universe
Toph says “you hid me from the world”. Her parents were so overprotective they didn’t even tell others they had a daughter, that’s why those boys thought they didn’t have a daughter
I always thought they were ashamed that their daughter was blind, never really took it as overprotection. I mean I thought that was more of an excuse, them being overprotective. You know, them being rich and everything, earth being a stubborn element which you definitely associate with strength, and then blindness basically being considered a weakness. I swear I always thought they were ashamed of her But maybe I'm just too pessimistic and they were actually overprotecting her hahaha
Also the way she said "you hid me from the world" feels like "you don't want the world to know that you have a blind daughter. Like maybe "you kept me from seeing the world" does feel different
Toph is absolutely a legend. Easily my favourite from the main cast, and I like everyone in it. And as Carlie said, her blindness is what helped her learn earthbending. She's not just throwing rocks. She's sensing what's happening on the ground better than anyone using their eyes so she can respond better and faster.
21:10 They live in the some nation at the same time and each nation has its own dress code. The Earth Kingdom fashion is based loosely on traditional Chinese and Korean dress, hence the similarity.
In terms of Toph's skill as a bender, I think something that Toph has 'created' for herself at this point is her 'seismic sense' which is what we see a couple times this episode.
Something to note: While the primary martial art style that earthbending is animated and choreographed to is a more traditional Kung Fu, Toph’s movements specifically are based on the Southern Praying Mantis style, more specifically the Chow Gar branch of this style, one which was developed with the blind fighter in mind. Her bending style is honestly my favorite, I’d encourage you guys to pay attention to the differences between her choreography and that of other earthbenders.
Technically they are important in bending as every bending uses some form of Jing. However the show unfortunately do not elaborate on it more other than Neutral Jing in some of these episodes.
And yet the animators never do. You can notice in some of her scenes she doesn't always stare at whoever she's fighting, and stares at the ground instead
@@pabloc8808 another cool detail is that anytime she's not on solid ground you'll see Toph hanging onto someone or something else, since in those cases she is completely blind and cannot use her seismic sense to see.
The Boulder was supposed to be voiced by The Rock but due to scheduling conflicts he couldn’t, but his friend/co worker/other wrestler named Mick Foley aka “Mankind” filled in for him and based his voice on another wrestler “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
its so awesome that you both enjoyed toph! she really is phenomenal. Her voice actress actually has a reaction series to avatar itself if you're interested!
Jings don’t get discussed much more in the show, but the novels touch on them a bit more. Firebending commonly uses positive jing and waterbending negative jing. Airbending is a cyclical jing that aims to divert and redirect an opponents moves.

Toph vs Earth Benders choreography is so good, Toph used dust as smoke screen to neutralize their visions and picking them off one by one Toph See's them like a seating duck via seismic sense, a great strategy
I think the reason you guys relate Toph to the woman who gave money to Iroh is the dress. The thing is that kind of dresses showed your social status, so basically rich women would wear that style of dress. That's why they kinda look familiar
Yes, y'all finally met Toph! I was waiting to see your reactions once her character is introduced and y'all did not disappoint! Yeah the Boulder was originally gonna be voiced by the Rock but because of scheduling they instead got Mick Foley to do it instead I do hope in the Netflix adaptation they have the Rock to be the Boulder because that would be so funny and perfect because in the Original he sounds just like the Rock.
Toph is a fan favorite for obvious reasons but her voice actress is pretty cool as well. Michaela Jill Murphy is still a big fan of show all these years later and even did her own reactions to show with other cast members.
The girl who gave Iroh money and Toph (when she was at home) were just wearing a common Earth Kingdom style. There might be some relation there to Toph, but nothing's ever been confirmed (as far as I know!). You'll see similar dresses all through the Earth Kingdom.
I heard that Toph’s fighting style (she is the only one in the show that uses it) was based on a unique fighting style that was actually created by a blind woman. I don’t know if that’s true but if it is that is just such a cool detail🫶🏼
As an old school wrestling fan, it kills me how obvious it is that the writers clearly knew what they were doing with Earth Rumble, if not being fans themselves. The Boulder obviously being The Rock, right down to referring to himself in the third person and cutting promos on his opponents. Even his old tag partner and real life friend Mick Foley doing the voice work. The Hippo being the big "monster" heel that shrugs off offense but the valiant smaller hero struggles and unleashes a huge feat of strength by successfully slamming them (like Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant). Fire Nation Man being the "evil foreigner" getting patriotic boos from the audience, right down the classic foreign heel target of 80's American wrestling - the Russian accent - and making the crowd listen to a foreign national anthem. A literal masked, Lucha Libre style wrestler like Rey Mysterio. And of course that sick title belt. So many fun nods and little details that show the attention and love to even a small part of the episode. Also Sokka probably clamors to be a pro wrestler in another life - the guy loves to crack wise and kick ass, perfect fit 😁
It "had" to be a Beifong, the Beifongs have involved with many avatars, they're not only rich, they are an old and influencual family line. Oh and Toph is great, glad you folks got to meet her, she is my favorite,
Oh, The Boulder was based on The Rock, but they couldn't get him to voice the character, so they got Mick Foley, aka Mankind, Cactus Jack, and Dude Love. Mick NAILED it! I originally thought it was Randy "Macho Man" Savage doing the voice.
Mastery between different elements is not really comparable. The whole creating a new bending style to become a master is really an airbender thing for all we know. Toph is self taught. No spoilers but she learned to sense the world around her through earthbending from an extremely early age. To her earth bending is just like her own senses and body at this point. Aang is a master airbender, Katara is a master water bender and you will see how terrifiyingly powerful she is when surrounded by enough water later on but Toph is unique. She truly is the most powerful earth bender precisely because of the reason I mentioned before. She never misses (unless her targets are airborne), nor she ever exerts even the slightest bit of excess power; she earthbends with 100% precision and 100% efficiency.
