    Something to note:
    It’s important to keep in mind that everything we see here is essentially from Zuko’s perspective. We see his experience as a child. We see Azula tormenting him, being the one who always received the validation he desperately sought from his father. And we see his mother being the only nurturing member of his family. But however sad they may be, these are his memories alone.
    For Azula, these same years are painted as an entirely different picture. She saw Zuko as the one to always receive the attention even though she was better than him at everything. The only one who gave her any validation was her father, whom we know only provided that validation because of her prodigious talent. She learned at a young age that she can only receive praise because of her ability. Ozai’s love for her was conditional on her ability. Zuko’s mom’s love for him was unconditional. Mai had a crush on him. Even with Iroh’s gifts it was clear which one he actually put thought into. In her young developing mind, why was Zuko so deserving of all this love when he couldn’t even firebend well and meet his expectations? We feel bad for Zuko, as we should, but we need to keep in mind that he had a number of loving and guiding forces in his life both in his mother and in Iroh. Azula on the other hand, only had her father.

    • @hallieraymond
      @hallieraymond 4 месяца назад +9

      Yes. It's ironic. Azula is decidedly an extrovert. She needs people in a way Zuko doesn't and craves both connection and validation. Even as she enjoys tormenting Zuko, it's clear she also wants him around. She feels like she's better at everything than Zuko except at what she actually wants: people LIKE Zuko. People don't just fear him. They want him around and build him up. Even Azula likes Zuko in her own twisted way, which also makes her even more resentful.

    @artistfloor9 5 месяцев назад +10

    Impressed that you guys figured out what happened with Zuko’s mom right away due to the foreshadowing in the turtle duck scene. A lot of people are a bit confused because the episode is intentionally unclear. We’re left to wonder whether Azula was lying or not. We do know that Ozai hated Zuko and he also wanted the throne. Ursa had to make a deal with her husband to spare her son.

  • @tortoiseoflegends4466
    @tortoiseoflegends4466 5 месяцев назад +61

    It's easy to just write Azula off as evil from birth, but this episode does make you question how much of it is Ozai's influence. We clearly see she's Ozai's favourite and doesn't spend much time with her mother, compared to Zuko who is pretty much ignored by his father and doted on by his mother.
    Like at the beginning, the first thing we see Zuko do is throw bread in the face of a duckling and then get pissy at the mother, before his mother corrects that behaviour. Without his mother there, it's pretty clear he'd end up with as little empathy for others as Azula has. Throughout the episode, whenever Zuko does somethign to help others, we almost always see a flashback to his time with his mother.
    Iroh clearly wasn't close with Azula either, only sending her a pretty crap doll whereas Zuko got a cool knife taken from a general. The only guiding influence Azula has is her father.
    She's crazy and needs to go down, but she isn't the devil. Like Zuko, she's as fucked up as she is because of her Dad. The best thing Ozai ever did for Zuko was exiling him lol.

By outting Iroh lineage, the successor of the crown directly falls to the nxt born, Ozai. And if Zuko was indeed killed right there and then, Azula wld directly be nxt in line to the crown. Otherwise Ozai’s lineage will nvr be in line for the crown, following standards royal succession.

      @@YTAG33 i mean..i judge all voice work for its own merits. a lot of times for anime the english cast is just not on the same level as the original cast. im sure the same thing is true across all languages. its often going to feel more natural with the original language and culture that brings.
      im just saying this is not a dub because a dub means the original voice work is being 'dubbed' into a different language.

    From my memory I do t think zuko’s mom’s name is said in the show, but it is in the comics along with more detail of what went down exactly that night with fire lord Azulong, but just in case I’ll stay quiet about those details till closer to the end.
    To answer Mrs Carly’s question yes I have heard of braille. I was thought it from grade school to though middle school, then stopped due to the NFB being treatable here in the states at least to me, so high school it was regular classes witch is why my math and spelling suck as an adult.

    I think that the fact if Azula lied or not actually does not matter. Both outcomes are horrible and the whole episode was supposed to show how blody was Ozai's path to the crown and psychopathic tendencies of Azula. I really love how the show depicts psychopath cuz she makes really good antagonist that makes sense to the story.

    When Zuko was just a outcast peasant wanderer, he had the respect of everyone. But the second he mentions he is the prince of the fire nation and heir to the throne, everyone starts disrespecting him. Calling him a fraud and a liar. Its symbolizing what Zuko needs to do to "regain his honor".

    Azula lies except when the truth, or part of the truth benefits her more. The most believable lie has some truth in it.
    I think the mom would've verified that Azulon ordered Zuko's death with Ozai before taking any action. My theory has always been that Azulon indeed ordered Ozai to kill Zuko. But, not just as punishment for Ozai trying to betray Iroh while iroh was grieving. Azulon was also grieving as he lost his first grandson. He describes it as being "after the lost of his beloved son". He loved and respected iroh and his grandson. Ozai is hanging around the palace for a reason. He's proven unfit to lead. He's power hungry, dishonorable, cruel, and kinda crazy. Azula is his little clone in training. Zuko is untalented and unfavored. So, Azulon orders Ozai to murder his son knowing Ozai would do it. It would destroy their family if he did it. In the eyes of Ozai it destroys any chance of obtaining the throne if he doesn't. The thing Azulon didn't count on was that mothers protect their babies no matter what.

    • @gunchar06

      It's pretty wild that such a monster like Azulon apparently had such a strong connection to Iroh, but then again Iroh most certainly changed a lot.
