    Well made points and glad to see another working pro out in the wild, appreciating and more importantly, value mobility and agility of a small system. Olympus or not, choosing the right tool for the right job is the essence. Small system has a place in this market, as long as OMDS and Panasonic and BM continues to make M43 cameras, it lives on. Cheers mate.

      Thanks so much, mate! That means a lot! More people should be looking at how gear can enable, not inhibit their work. I definitely think M4/3 still has a place, at least for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, OM-Solutions bring some pro-level video features this year too!

    This content is some of the best I’ve seen in recent times. It’s truly inspiring, and the level of professionalism is outstanding. I recently switched from Sony to Olympus (OMS), always with the same doubt about whether the tool would be enough, and so on. Definitely, it’s the person, not the gear, and this video proves it beyond a doubt. Please keep uploading content like this! Cheers!

      Hi there! Ahh that really means a lot! Thankyou so much for the love! Like you I'm sure, I've found it terribly frustrating when people disregard Olympus gear when in truth they've never actually shot with the system. I'm fortunate in that I've gone from three APS-C cameras to full frame and finally onto M4/3 and nothing has enabled me more than that! Even if the brand or system went dead tomorrow, anyone who owns the camera and lens can get out there and take award winning shots! 😁

    As a 10+ year pro photographer, I've never paid attention to the Olympus digital line but your video makes a huge compelling argument to the value of these cameras that Olympus themselves have failed to school me on. You're certainly going to have to make a bag video to tell us about the most useful gear and accessories. Great vid.

      Hi Adam, I really appreciate the feedback and kind words! In your time as a pro, you would have seen some incredible advancements in technology no doubt! What was the release that amazed you the most? not just from Olympus, but technology wise across the board? I also have found that Oly global marketing, particularly with their promo videos, really wasn't as good as they could be. At least not in a way that compelled new users to jump ship! I have started writing up notes for the 'whats in my bag video' Thanks again!

    • @AdamAllen
      @AdamAllen 3 года назад

      @@etchd_ The most interesting jump so far IMO is the mirrorless system in general not only in size weight (which was a game changer in itself) but when I saw the ability to see exact exposures and effects in real time on EVFs, silent shooting, IBIS, it was hard to believe. I started doing professional shoots using Fuji gear and got scoffs at first but lugging around 5Ds was feeling more like a burden and I was having far more fun and nailing shots undeniably with the mirrorless gear.

Your photo results with the 4/3 micro format could not easily be replicated by full frame camera systems given the conditions under which you had to take these photos. I think for this reason the 4/3 format will continue to exist in the future.

Without a doubt some of these shots could be taken using another system, but the quantity would be far less and the stress and worry about elemental damage would be high ha! I agree that there is definitely a future for the system and a strong user base, it will fall on the manufacturers to keep innovating at a pace that will keep up with the market.

      Hi Peter, your words mean a lot! thank you! There is so much you can do with this system if you really get down and dirty and push for unique shots. Without a doubt, if I had just stuck to the one genre of photography, my work would not be as diverse, nor do I think it would be at this level. The skills I picked up stepping out of my comfort zone shooting portraits, weddings, babies, and families etc, has helped enormously when interacting with people during travels, composing them and eventually getting the shots. Also, photography is fun, no matter what the genre, so keep it light and do things for free to up skill. I think that is the biggest lesson towards getting better, regardless of the camera! good luck with it, and I'm keen to hear how your journey progresses!

    I think when you say things like, "Ideally you don't want too much depth anyway" or "Underwater you actually want a narrower depth of field".
    I think you mean the opposite :) e.g. "Underwater you want more depth of field, more in focus." :)
    More depth of field is more in focus. Shallow/narrow depth of field is less in focus.
    We all know what you mean though!

    I use Olympus for weddings portraits all kinds of gigs and event shoots. Love how it works Love the portability the quality. I actually sold my Canon 5D Mark II full frame setup and switch to micro four thirds. in regards to Olympus being cutting edge I will say they're not cutting edge at this time cannons coming out with some autofocus that's far more advanced and complicated than the Olympus but hopefully Olympus will step up and give them some competition. Some of the other camera manufacturers are really getting their systems pretty well advanced so Olympus does have some work to do but in any case love the Olympus platform.

I totally agree with you about the 'cutting edge' part. I actually meant at the time when I first started getting into the system. I also believe that the other companies have caught up / surpassed the brand in many ways, mainly due, I think to larger R&D budgets. There has just been too much time passed between the EM1x / EM1MKII tech and now. They did say a new flagship will come out this year! fingers crossed for some amazing innovation again! @@etchd_ GH5 still gets used at weddings - the no record limit is great for a static cam during ceremonies, and 4K60 for Slow Mo. I pretty much use the 12 40 pro all day on the EM1X with the 75 1.8 in the bag along with the Sigma 30 1.4 for tight closeups. Loving shooting all day hand held with the X`s great IBIS and AF that actual works. C4K flat profile gives beautiful colors straight out of camera with virtual no correction needed. Another thing not to many have commented on is the Auto White balance is amazing - flick the power on and you can see the camera correct white balance in seconds and it nails it. Still editing the last couple of weddings shot 90% with the X will post them once done. Think im becoming a bit of an Oly fanboy :-)

    Very well explained! Amazing video and great pictures!! I am a professional photographer and videographer in Germany and, although I have cameras in different formats, I use M43 in 80% of the situations! In my personal use as a hobby and when traveling, the M43 system is my choice in 100% of situations! It is the system that has the biggest fun factor! I mainly use the Lumix GH5 for video and the e-m1 iii for photo. But with the weak signaling from Panasonic regarding its commitment to the M43 system, I have been migrating almost exclusively to Olympus! In FF my choice is the Nikon Z6, but for rare circumstances. My wife uses the D7200 and the GX80.

      Hi mate! thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you like them. How are things in Germany for you guys? It sounds like you have a camera hoarding problem like me ;) ha! the GH5 still is one of the most amazing little video cameras, what amazing tech in such a small body and it's getting on in age now too! I love my Pocket 4k though, ability to shoot RAW is just so good. Great you can interchange lenses for your stills and video! That's another reason i chose the 4k over the 6k Pocket. That Z6 is also a great camera! I'd like something like that or the newer model for indoor weddings. But... I have no money ha. I used to have a D7200 as well, it was a brilliant camera and the image quality was outstanding! Keep it up mate.

    This was such an inspiring video; not only your adventurous, but my insecurities about selling my full frame camera is dwindling. I have a Sony a73 and an Olympus em1 mark iii, they are both great, but I have way more lenses for the Olympus as they were way more affordable for good quality lenses. Since I bought the Olympus, I tend to gravitate towards it (it just feels better, and those Olympus colors!). I use the computational features a ton, so the new OM-1 is very attractive; I am all about the wildlife photography and getting into interesting places. So seeing the work you are doing, despite the size of the sensor puts my mind at ease for selling my Sony and getting the OM-1. Thanks!

      Hi mate, thanks so much for the super kind words. IF you know and use your system well, you can create amazing content. Every camera suits a need in their own unique way. For me, having a rugged and small system is advantageous over a larger sensor. Sure for some portrait and low light work it might be nice to have something more capable, but when using the pro primes, I can get away with it fine. The OM-1 is a fantastic camera, and I really havent had a chance to thrash it properly on a commercial shoot. I will be doing that though in a few weeks time so stay tuned!

    This was such a well needed video, thank you! It's so nice to see someone Really go in depth and show that they use OM / Micro Four Thirds for work. It was my biggest worry that I couldn't do that when I switched from Nikon a few years ago, and it's definitely what I notice people commenting about a lot. I also use my OM gear professionally shooting portraits, food and a lot of outdoor lifestyle and nature tourism (and a few weddings) and I love it! I am happy with it and so are my clients :D
    It's lovely to get to know your story a little bit and see the progression of work from one project to another, thanks for sharing that. And congratulations on capturing awesome content, landing good gigs and having your photos featured so much. Which, looking at them, I am not surprised. Your whale shots are STUNNING! Unfortunately since Covid, many of my other overseas trips were cancelled, so the cameras have gotten a good run around shooting all different types of scenarios which has been fun. Glad you like the Whale shots! They have been some of my most popular images! Really well thought out and presented video, great photo's and great to hear straight out at the start that the camera plays a part but is not the be all and end of great photo's. There are no bad cameras out there today, just cameras that suit one's particular need and that feel right in the hand and in the field. I've been shooting with Olympus since the 1970's with the OM1/OM4Ti and remember some people calling them toy camera's as they were so small, all the usual suspect and that they couldn't be termed a professional camera. They are still working now along with my Olympus digital gear and pro lenses which I love, the only change is now is that some people concentrate on the sensor size, which is just as wide of the mark as saying the OM1 (film camera) was a toy. Olympus have always been trailblazers in terms of innovation and tech and camera's that are truly portable. Long may it continue with OM Systems and it seems like it is happening.

    I'm heavily considering getting a dual EM-1 Mark iii setup with 2 Pro lenses as my setup for video pro work and photo hobbies. Seeing what you're able to do with your work gives me the encouragement that I'm making the right choice. What lenses would you recommend for both photo and video work. I can only get 2 lenses, which would you advise I look at from the pro line?
    And out of curiosity, did you film this video with the bmpcc 4k or an Olympus camera?

      Hi mate, so sorry for the later reply. I don't know why this comment didnt get through to my inbox!
      How did you go with your choices? Definitely the 12-100mm for both. I use it the most for filming. If you can get a second lens, then the 17mm f1.2 is a great one so you can shoot in low light.
      I can't remember what this was filmed with, but I think it was the BMPCC4k!

    A really great video with some superb photos. You're very easy to listen to and the entire production is high quality.
    I switched to m43 from Nikon FF in 2012 and now in October 2020 I actually switched back to FF with the L-mount. Biggest reason, to be honest, was the use of super wide angles where m43 suffer some (too much software correction needed).
    My Olympus cameras and lenses took a huge beating over the years, not so much is terms of impact but in terms of water, both fresh and salt and I always only had to rinse them under the top or shower. Kind of scary the first time but very fun to show people.
    I'm hoping new OM can put out some modernized cameras. As great as the current models are they do lag behind in some technology, displays and EVF are a huge part of the experience for me and having very old tech EVF in an otherwise super high end camera like the 1X or Mk III feels off.
    Having said that, I do already sometimes miss the feeling of m43. There was something special with shooting with it, hard to say what but it was just pure fun. I'll wait and see what the new OM company can put out.
    Again, great video, well done!

      Hi Rasmus, thankyou for the kind words! Glad you resonated with the content!
      What type of work are you shooting?? I'm looking to get the laowa 9mm zero-d for some architecture shoots coming up. Have you ever used one?
      The cameras are pretty crazy tough right? Which Panasonic did you buy?

    • @wilbuzllf5057
      @wilbuzllf5057 3 года назад

      Hey!
      I do way too many things, it's hard to specialize since I like lots of different things but I'd say adventure/action/nature is a big part of what I love even though I don't get the chance to shoot much of it. Environmental portraits is great fun and I love architecture which is a big reason I love super wide angles and some landscapes also get squeezed in, if you have a super wide you just have to use it :D
      I've never used the Laowa 9mm but I've held it as well as some of their other lenses and they are amazingly tiny! From what I've seen the image quality is also very good.
      Super wide angle is so much fun, it can be difficult but when you find a suitable subject and nail a shot, it's worth every missed shot and every hour spent chasing the right thing :)

    My man, amazing video. I've been on m43 for 10 years and it was my first digital SLC. I chose the system because mirrorless made sense for adventures. I have hundreds of amazing photos documenting my travels that I otherwise wouldn't have got if it weren't for the practicality/size. Anyway I have a G9 now for surfing/action/long lens but missing a lighter compact body for when I don't need burst/crazy AFC... your segment on the em5iii has me thinking. I could really use a light body and high res mode out there in the backcountry! I still use my Gf1 and there's still half a dozen lenses I'm lusting after so M43 is far from dead for me.

    • @etchd_
      @etchd_  3 года назад

      Hey mate! thank you for the love and kind words! The little EM5 is a great camera! it doesn't have High res mode as that is reserved for the EM1/x models. It is the ultimate little B-cam though due to its size and weight. I wouldnt worry too much about the lack of hi-res mode though as Adobe Photoshop / Camera Raw / Bridge has this new (Enhance/Upscale) feature that uses A.I to increase the size by 4x. It is meant to be seriously incredible stuff. I was using Topaz Gigapixel which has worked a treat as well if needing to blow up to enormous prints or save lost RAW files but I still have the JPGS.

    • @alang253
      @alang253 3 года назад

      @@etchd_ EM5 has hi-res mode (tripod only), but not handheld. I will look into Adobe's new upscaling. Truthfully I've never had problems with 20mp, or even 16 or 12mp from my older cameras even for demanding landscapes. The other thing you brought to my attention is the EM1iii... smidge smaller and lighter than my G9 (every gram counts) and with liveND, HHHR I can pretty much go tripod free which cuts out a LOT of weight.

    • @etchd_
      @etchd_  3 года назад

      @@alang253 Ahh I see! I don't think the firmware was available for the hi-res mode when I had the pre-productions models that's why I didn't know! that is cool though. You made a comment about 10-bit video in C4K mode. Now that we have it the new OM-1, Is there a significant difference in grading ability with the "very old" E-M1 iii? Maybe you can push things a little more, but are we talking 5% more 10% more or 30% more? Just wanted to know your thoughts on the matter. Also, I know you shoot the BMPCC 4k, is the OM-1 anywhere in the same ballpark in terms of quality?

    • @etchd_
      @etchd_  2 года назад +1

      Hi John, sorry for the late reply. The difference between 8-bit and 10-bit is immense. you are talking 68million colours in 8-bit and 1.07 Billion in 10-bit. Colour gradation, skin tones, everything to do with what you can push in colour is better. Dynamic range is a whole different story, but even then, it looks great. I just got back from two big week long commercial shoots and both times i used the OM-1 alongside the 6k PRO (with a mist filter) and they look amazing. Still looks too sharp without the mist, and obviously you dont have 12-bit colour, but i can easily match them!
