Hey Olympus / OM people! I hope you are excited about the new camera release! I've spent the past month working with the camera and creating a super in-depth review and feature walkthrough on the stills and video capabilities. It's long but timestamped, so you can check out the parts that interest you the most. Let me know if you've got any questions!
Yes had a little play with one of the three in the UK on Saturday, Different feel clearly and will take some getting used to but it feels Olympian. Sturdier and less clunky switches and things closer to the thumb!
Yo Etched / After reviewing 8 or 10 other reviews of this camera, yours is THE ONLY ONE that covers everything intelligently, usefully and critically, with lots of great detail shots of camera and menu functions. Time stamping is extra-helpful for later reference. Bloody awesome, mate!
Hi Leonard, thanks so much for the kind words mate. It really does mean a lot after putting so much effort into it. I often wonder if the extra effort is worth it, but when people actually learn and benefit from some little piece, then it makes me happy. Thanks for sticking around for so long on the mammoth vid ha
@@etchd_ You're most welcome. Indeed, I have pre-ordered the OM-1 with the "kit" lens (12-40 f/2.8) in hopes that it will succeed where the previous camera did not: the viewfinder experience. Unfairly, I am comparing it to my Sigma fp with the 2.5x mag + exceedingly bright LVF finder, but even shooting with the Nikon Z7 II and less bright 24-70mm f/4 Lens was a surprising joy compared to the Olympus Mk III. Shooting with a touch screen will offer me a whole world as well, though I haven't really missed it with the Sigma since I focus & recompose and tend to shoot land- and cityscapes.
@@etchd_ I know we live in a world where everyone wants quick cuts and short videos. But in THIS case, we’re talking about a camera that we’ve been waiting for since at least 2018! So we’re GOOD with listening for over an hour when the info and creative content are actually providing meaningful help and education about a product that brings new things to the table. Very, very good job. I keep rewinding to catch some extra little detail. While sharing this comment, I realized that I haven’t actually finished the video just yet!! 😂 Thanks for putting so much detail and so much of yourself into it. Very enjoyable and helpful.
Hi there. It's the small rig mini top handle, however it seems they don't sell them anymore which is a shame. Lots of people ask about it. Keep looking on their website as they may come back
i appreciate that you admitted they paid you for the review. i checked multiple reviews of om1 and a lot seemed paid, but they dont state it. nice for someone to actually be honest about it
Hi mate, no worries at all. It would be dishonest of me to do any review without disclosing that. These reviews take weeks and weeks to film and put together, and OM SYSTEM know that and want me to be paid for my efforts. I only do it this way on the condition that they have no say in how i present the review or my findings a part from the fact checking so i get the specs and features right which is fine as it's easy to accidentally say the wrong number. Thanks again !
@@etchd_ so exciting. I usually lust after old cameras but this might be the only new camera capable of garnering my interest. Thank you for such an exhaustive video! I am going to have to circle back to finish it tomorrow.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras haha honestly! This is such a world above what they previously put out you'd be amazed. The speed is just incredible! Let me know if you've got any questions!
Thanks for the review. I really like my Em1 Mkii. I’ve never felt the need to upgrade until now. I was a bit worried about the transition to OM systems, but feel a lot more confident now. This looks like an amazing camera. Happy they kept it at 20 MP and focused on other performance criteria.
Hi Evan. Cheers for the love mate. Yes, I think everyone was a bit worried but they seem to have pulled it off! I'm glad they left it at 20mp as well. It's seriously all you need, especially with the quality of the upscalers these days and the hand held hi res is so good now. Going off your other comment on the housing, did you know the EM1MKIII fits inside as well? you just need to disable the joystick ;)
Very in-depth. I went from the OMD-EM1 looking for a used camera, perhaps the EM3. But my wife said "If you are going to step up, STEP UP! Buy a new camera", and so I did. I just powered it up yesterday and formatted my cards and then I watched your review. Wow. thanks to you and my wife.
Hi mate, thanks for stopping by! You my friend, are a lucky man to have a wife who says buy the more expensive version ha. Good luck with your shooting :)
I seriously hope olympus are paying you. Without a doubt you're the best olympus guy on here. I love your videos, but more than that you instill a confidence in me about the possibilities that olympus can do. Perhaps I've listened to too many micro 4/3 haters or other guys that haven't got the skill to represent olympus. Keep up the great work and thank you for all your effort. Mike lane for the wildlife and you for everything else.
Hi mate! thanks so much for the kind words, you are too kind! There are plenty of seriously talented creators out there using this system, I guess they just don't get their stuff out there on YT? I tend not to worry about what others are saying in the media or forums, unless they actually direct it to me. I prefer to spend that time and energy creating the stuff I love and hopefully educating everyone else about my process. I actually shoot quite a bit of wildlife, which you can find on my website or IG. It's one of my major passions. A lot of my polar stuff is wildlife centered. It's this damn covid that has stopped me getting out to shoot more of it haha. Thanks again!
Apologies, you do shoot wildlife and very well I might add but you shoot the fancy stuff which I would only ever get to see in a zoo. Mike is in UK and I'm in ireland so I would have access to the same type of wildlife as him. I only discovered you in the last few days while off with covid and although I also follow you on IG under my picture framing business that I just set up I'm also going to follow you as my philipswan account . Again keep up the great work 👏 it really is super
By far the best initial review I've come across! Thanks. Glad to see you really put it through its paces even though you admit you would like to test further. Would love to see some real world pixel peeping going on to test the claimed two stop/one stop low light and dynamic range benefits of the new sensor. Thank you. Will be looking out for any further testing reviewing of this camera by you.
Hi Trevor, Thanks so much mate! I'm unsure if I'll go in depth like that to look at the differences, only because for me, the images are fine how they are in both series of cameras. I didn't really have a problem with not enough dynamic range on the older cameras except for video. From what I've seen though you can pull back more shadow detail on the new one!
Hi Jason, thanks for dropping by. Ha, you could say that. I was part of the release of the new camera. If you've watched any of the release videos you would have seen me in Scotland and on the product page. I just returned for a commercial tourism shoot in Hawaii and the camera was amazing!
@@etchd_ thought the coming up GH6 might go over my budget , I was almost getting a GH5 mark 2 . but all my lens are from Olympus , so Ive been waiting for this announcement for months. i mostly shoot stills ,but im now learning and trying out on videos and some small documentaries with friends🤣 just wanna say thank you for all these tutorials and sharings! hope to see more in the future ! (btw. do you speak Chinese?😆 cause Im not really good at typing in English haha )
@@yiyun911 Ahh the GH6 looks like a really solid option. If the specs are what they say it is, and if the previous models are anything to go by, it will be a far superior video camera. But that's what it is built for too i guess. Great you are learning video, it makes you really stop and think how you are doing everything. Its a good challenge but a tricky one. Im glad you get something out of my work. Im hoping to do less reviews over the year and focus more on tutorials! Ha, no i only speak english sorry! Im actually from Korea too :)
@@etchd_ accessories for Olympus are so hard to find , that sometimes really turn me down haha . that SmallRig doesn't have a cage for it , and for tethering ,the 'Capture One' doesn't support either 😅 any thoughts or recommendations ? is the 'Olympus Capture' good and fast enough for client works ? Ha, im a viewer from Taiwan : )
@@yiyun911 Trust me mate i know haha If you can get a small universal cage it works. But a purpose built is always best. Hmm to be honest i never tether so i am unsure. I will need to have a play around and see! but you should be able to download it now and test on another camera?
Hi Arefuddin, thank you my friend for the kind words. It sure took awhile to create this review, so I'm glad it resonated with you. I hope it also helped you make an informed decision.
Hi James, thanks so much for the kind words mate! I hope I can represent the brand well and educate everyone out there on what the cameras can do. There are quite a few other good creators out there though. I guess we all just focus on different aspects of shooting :)
Thank you very much for your in-depth review of this camera. As you kindly offered, it would be great to have you talk about settings you use on this camera.
Hi Rosanna, thanks for the love! I do plan on doing a best settings video, just finding the time now is tricky with all my jobs I have on atm. Stay tuned though :)
Great, detailed review. Thanks. I’m very excited about the new camera. I would love to see a video on your tips and tricks for getting longer exposures hand held and maximizing the IBIS system, as I do all my shooting handheld.
Hi Sidney, thanks so much for the kind words. Awesome, i thin that is a topic many people want to see so I will create a short one soon :) Hit that bell so you don't miss it!
Detailed and well executed review. Felt that you really knew this body and we could trust your your exacting opinion and references...Subscribed and liked. regards
Thanks Phillip. I appreciate the support! After using this camera for so long now, I can safely say it's pivotal to my commercial work. I hope you get as much out of your camera as I do!
Yes pls, my OM-1 arrived just under a week ago and would love you to push me in the right direction re settings - I seem to have lost some of them. Do you still use back button focus? Many thx for all yr help.
Hi Catherine, sorry for the late reply! Glad the new camera has arrived. How are you finding it? What do you mean about losing the settings? did you change something and now cant figure out what happened? Yep, I still use backbutton focusing, I can't live without it :) If you are still having problems, shoot me an email etchdphotography@outlook.com and ill try help!
Newby question, are the older oly 4/3 lens and 43 to m43 adapter be compatible with the om-1. I've got a few favourite lenses I wouldn't be able to affordable replace if I upgrade.
Hi mate, yes, if you use the non-glass versions it should work! Using the metabones speedbooster will not work though, unfortunately. I've tried! the speed booster is actually too wide and hits the top of the camera when rotating to mount. Very annoying as this is something I'd love to do. I obviously cant say for sure as I've not used a simple pass-through adaptor but I'm almost certain it will work.
Thank you, so your saying the mmf 3 will do the job. I know its a discontinued adapter but still available 2nd hand or could you recommend a good 3rd party equivalent. I see what you mean about the metabones thank you for pointing that out. I have a mixture of oly film and digital lenses I use on my current but getting tired E5
@@ijc9984 Honestly, I can't really recommend anything wholeheartdely without using it myself, but this one from Urth looks like it might work amzn.to/3by97H2 . I've also got a K& N adaptor for EF and its ok but not as good as the Fotodiox one i got yesterday! Sorry I couldn't be of more help . Let me know how you go though as I too would like to know!
Thanks so much Jens. I aim to go in depth and provide people something different. After all, if everyone did basic ones, it would be difficult to learn anything new :)
Thanks for the appreciation my friend! It was the most exhaustive video I've ever done haha so tired at the end! Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you get excitement out of it like I did! Let me know if you have any questions!
Hi there! you are definitely not wrong haha and to make things worse, I had to film the talking head on friday, and only had two days to edit the whole thing before uploading . It was an absolute nightmare!! But glad people are resonating with it and getting something out of it :)
This is a fantastic review, thank-you. I was almost going to switch to Canon for eye tracking with portraits, but now I will upgrade my EM1 MkII to the Om-1 and save thousands. thanks
Hi Valerie, glad you got something out of the review! The eye tracking is really great in the camera. It you’ll need to tweak the sensitivity when shooting groups, but that’s the same for most systems. Get out and experiment before any paid gigs 😀
Ahh amazing ! you wont be disappointed! I was meant to have the new lens for all these shoots, but it got sent to the wrong person and never made it to me ha. Ill be grabbing one though as the Fluorine coating on them is seriously the best!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Every time i do one of these reviews it seems to get longer and more in depth ha. I always think what i would want to hear and learn about, and that is a gift and a curse :/
Hi mate. ahh well I have to be honest, I've never shot anything like that before, but i reckon if it is well lit and you are happy with boosting the iso to 6400 + and you are using the 2.8 lenses then yes!
Hi Allen, so sorry for the late reply. bit slow these days ha. Honestly, I haven't really looked into the new XH2, only the XH2s which blitzes the OM-1 with video specs. But then again, it is a dedicated hybrid video model. The AF speed would be better on the OM-1 i think. But really, it's a different sensor size and tech so very difficult to make judgements unless I had extensively used the camera. I'm sure it is a bloody awesome thing though!
@@etchd_ Thanks. I primarily do photography so the video is not as important to me. The weather sealing on the OM is impressive and since I do a lot of landscape (and outdoor sports) that's a nice feature. My local camera store doesn't have an OM1 in to look at yet.
Hey legend. Thanks so much! I know right, if you try and do everything you end up ... well like me trying to do everything haha. I wanted desperately to shoot wildlife, but zero time or place to do it.
@@etchd_ Thanks for that, no one called me that before haha :) The first movies that I was watching from you where "How Time Flies" and "Reset" and I just loved it. You have a great gift to drag the audience in to the story and make them feel to be a part if it. This in a very soft way and thats a gift. So, thanks for your work!
Ok you convinced me! For me it will be the first of this historic and new brand. I hope for more in-depth videos especially about its special features. Thank you very much and many greetings from Italy😊
Best review on the OM-1 and by quite far, THANKS A LOT and you gained a subscriber ! I am very interested in a video on basic color grading for video. 😁
@Etchd Photography can you comment on the OLED EVF and the rear LCD display if you are wearing polarized sunglasses? This was always a problem with previous OM-D cameras.
@@etchd_ THIS is going to make a lot of people very, very happy! It’s the answer I expected, now that they’re using a different technology and completely different panels. I anticipated improvement with the EVF, but I’m surprised that it’s also not an issue with the rear LCD!!
Great video, thanks. QQ: is there a button that lets you switch between faces when using facial tracking? (Eg if there’s two or more people in the frame)
Hi Russel, sorry for the late reply! thanks so much for dropping by. You would need to press on the screen to select the face. I think that would be a brilliant feature though, being able to map to the cross pad and quickly switch with one hand. I will recommend that to OM SYSTEM!
Hi Manual, thanks so much mate! I had a lot more in there but time got the best of me. I haven't uploaded any of the FHD only 4k into the folder, but can maybe add some. Chris Eyre walkers high speed MTB film has lots of the FHD in it!
2 stop improvement in high ISO and 1 stop improvement in DR. This makes the OM-1 a very viable landscape kit that I could use and I'm highly considering trying it out. The AF is quite a step up it seems from pervious cameras. Sad to see the Olympus brand being removed in the future. Oh well.
Hi Terry, Having not used the bird tracking on the EM1x a huge amount its hard for me to give you a rock solid answer here. What is the highest iso range you are typically shooting at? I did spend the afternoon shooting with the the OM-1 at dusk while it was raining using the 300mm plus MC-20 converter and the tracking did a decent job. That was through quite a lot of foliage. It would jump a fair bit though. I think all the processing power is under the hood, just with some more firmware they can refine it a little more. Certainly in the automotive tracking scenarios where lots of cars are present. Sorry I couldnt be of more help mate! Might need to reach out to Ben who is the bird guy!
@@terrywbreedlove Ahh I see, well i was shooting some of the bird shots and portrait shots at 6400 and was well within acceptable! You might need to borrow one from a store once they arrive and test it out!
Hi David! thanks so much! Which Nikon camera do you use? Every camera has its place within a toolkit, so I think if the OM-1 ticks all the boxes you need, then go for it :)
As much as I love hearing your thoughts of the camera and the system as a whole, seeing your photos makes me longing for the outdoors. If there is something that I wished you would do more often, it would be to fill the frame with your work and let them be there for a while longer. Don't get me wrong, you're a handsome guy! But I'd really appreciate if you'd let me rest my eyes on your photos for a while longer ;D Great job!
Haha thanks so much mate! I actually had a few people mention that, so i'll definitely change it up next time. It would actually be much easier for me to do this as well as I wouldnt need to resize everything. I have always loved the clean aesthetic of the white border, but for the next one ill go bigger! I actually had to film and edit this in three days which is a week shorter than normal so there was meant to be far more images in the review. Ill post them all within the BTS though that is coming soon! thanks again mate.
Great review. Can you please confirm that you can't use the touch screen in the menu on the production version of the camera? The OM1 is raising my interest but that is a deal breaker for me coming from Panasonic mft and ff.
Hi Marty, I have no idea about the actual production model but if it's not available on the models i have, then it likely wont be released with that feature. However, firmware could fix this!
Thanks for the comment mate! I am unsure if you can at the moment. I use Photomechanic to edit metadata and import into lightroom, and at the time of creating this review, it wasn't recognising the .orf files yet. It will soon im sure. I'd say support for exiftool would come soon as well?
Thanks for your exhaustive effort in putting this video together. I’m renting an M1iii with the thought that if I like it the OM1 would be an improvement and worth purchasing.
Hi Richard, thank you kindly! I actually was quite exhausted at the end of this haha The Mark III is still an amazing camera! If you have the money and are tossing up which to get, the OM-1 is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Great presentation! Even though the video is long, it didn't feel long, because the information you presented was so relevant. Thank you. Look forward to seeing your videos and photos with the new camera. Subscribed!
Hi there! thanks for the love mate. Yes, such a long one this time, but I'm glad it didnt seem that way. I appreciate the support, and hope I can continue to bring knowledge bombs!
@@etchd_ You are making me want to give m4/3 another try! I was an early m4/3 adopter, still have the original EM1, and a myriad of lenses. But had already moved on to Fuji X and Sony. But now, maybe it's time to go back ...
Hi mate, so glad you found it useful! You still have an amazing camera there, but the speed of this new one will blow you away. I love my EM1 MKII, and still use it as my underwater camera :) Let me know if you have any other questions!
Resolution is more than adequate so far. It's still glossy, so in bright sunlight you will always be battling reflections, but I have my exposure warnings set so i see red and blue no matter what the light :)
Hi Steven, thanks for the love! That my friend, is an excellent question. Unfortunately, not because once you edit the video settings inside the menu, that only changes the default for the actual video dial option, which, in itself, is like a custom C button. So, if you make changes to the default video mode within say the P, or A mode then those will change, but not anything that is related to the dedicated video dial mode. Hope that helps!
I went through this twice to absorb as much as possible. I hope the final packages I get do come with that little flash you say you never use. I learned a trick from Natgeo legend, Jim Richardson once, when he saw me using it. He asked to try something with my camera and he swiveled the light around to the side to rear where he could hold his hand up to is as a bounce surface and took some portrait shots with low key look that were really nice and warm. I’ve since used it a few times to be able to get some interesting effect, almost like having a warm gel handy, for close up work. You might want to keep it in the bag just in case and test it out sometime. I like how you divided the program into stills then videos. I’m not very practiced with video with these still cameras so I’ll watch it more. I’m old enough I grew up using dedicated video recording cameras like Canon XL series and it’s never been something I was willing to learn how to do with these small cameras. But you show such skill and creative output I hope to learn a bit and try more with them. The learning curve may not be super steep but it seems to be endlessly long. Lol.
Hi Jeffrey. Thanks so much for the kind words and for taking many hours out of your day to watch it twice! That is super interesting to know about that flash. And something that makes total sense. Man, if you could use it off camera, then it would be such a cool little thing to play with, bounce it or diffuse through some material. Yes, for a review this long, I know people would only want to skip to the parts they wanted to watch rather than sit through the whole thing. Video is a steep learning curve , and I myself are still very much learning. I like the challenge though, and every time I create something new, I know where I can improve. Good luck with it all!
Great review. Best I’ve seen and I’m looking hard as I am contemplating the pre-order deal. I currently own the M1, M1.2, M1.3, and an M5.3. I hate the EVF in the M5.3 which is also OLED. Can you tell me if the EVF in the OM-1 is better? I assume it is as it’s a much higher density. Also can you tell me if the battery for the M1,3 will work in the OM-1? Thanks for the review, the auto focus and DR issues are a major selling point for me. Though I’m pretty used to the currently menus, for good or ill, and am not looking forward to trying to use both the old and new systems at the same time. I do some times shoot with more than one camera, so that can be a problem. I wish they had a feature where I could build my own menu system (all of it, not just a MY MENU) from scratch. No battery charger .
Hi Larry, I appreciate the kind words. I hope it helped you somewhat. Mate, the EVF in the new camera is world's aove all the other cameras. That is a big selling point of the OM-1. Especially in the EM5 series. There really is not much mroe to say than it is so much better. No, the batteries are new. So, unfortunately, you will need to purchase a whole new set if you plan on going remote! I myself need to pick up extras. It wont take long to get used to the new menu system. I have been swapping between the two quite a bit! Just took a few shoots to get it nailed :)
Thank you, very nicely done! Does the camera allow you to combine (tripod) Hi-Res mode and focus stacking? i wonder how the images would look like while panning in HHHR mode.
Hi there, thanks so much! Ahh not as far as I know! but that would be cool! Do you mean taking a HHHR then panning and taking another or panning while taking one?
Excellent and comprehensive review Matt. Thanks so much for your work putting this together. I'm sure I will need to see it again to soak up all of the information. I would be interested at some point in a separate video on how you organize your photos and videos on your computer efficiently and effectively. I'm switching to Apple from Windows. My priority is spending more time outdoors and taking pictures of wildlife, landscapes, etc. but could use advice about what works best for you. Congratulations becoming a parent! Andrew
Hi Andrew, I really appreciate the support. It was a monster effort to get this filmed and put together in such a short time. That sounds like a great idea for a video, and one that I'd love to make. My organisation of files has drastically changed over the years as I shoot more commercial projects and the file amounts grow larger and larger every time. I almost always edit off Samsung SSDs though and once the project is done, it is stored on my Drobo 5d3 then also backed up offsite. In terms of organising files, I always ingest my content using Photomechanic which can be intimidating, but once it's set up, you don't have to touch it again except for changing the location and shoot name etc. Then all my files have the metadata and file systems automatically created making things super simple and easy to locate. I hope you can get out and explore more! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to walk and hike :)
@@etchd_ Hi Matt, thanks for the info and look forward to seeing more. You will love it when your daughter starts walking and talking. It's a wonderful time but you might be carrying her on your shoulders a bit, so all the better you have light camera gear! Best, Andrew
Great review, thx ! Preordered mine to backup my E-M1 Mk2 ! Nice improve to the hi-res shot, i'll can now probaly use it to my workflow to make 360° shot. Do you know if the HLD-9 grip is compatible ?
Awesome to hear mate! the MKII is still a beautiful camera. I use it as my underwater shooter. Hi res works so fast now its amazing. Unfortunately not, as the batteries are different. You will need the new HLD-10 grip. Which I am yet to use but will grab it soon :)
Great review, I do appreciate the hard work. Plan on upgrading my OM-D 5 MKIII later this year. I'm very stoked about the new 40-150 lens at 381 grams it will be a perfect for all my OM cameras.
Thanks Mark! it's nice to know you got something out of it! You have a great little camera there! I'm actually going to review the new 40-150 using that exact camera :)
Hey Matt, a new follower on your channel. I am a wedding photographer based in Las Vegas from the UK. My story on camera journey is opposite to yours. I have always had Olympus Camera as just a hobbyist and when I started doing more weddings, because of low light and weird lights, I wanted full frame so switched to Sony, but this camera sounds amazing. Please post a video after shooting a wedding with OM-1. I asked for a rental at Olympus but no guarantee or date yet. I would love to try. I always found Olympus system so much more fun. Oh by the way, if you’re ever in this part of the world and want to go out to the nature here, let me know. Cheers mate.
Hi Eugene, thanks so much for stopping by! I'm glad you could find something useful in my channel :) I think still for weddings, the Sony might be a better choice, depending on your style and what lenses you have, only because of the low light capabilities! And I guess having that little bit of extra depth could be beneficial in portraiture work. However, this camera would be the perfect destination camera as no matter the weather you could shoot, its lighter to travel with and still get amazing shots. Yes, rental houses might be a good option, but your guess is as good as mine as to when they arrive. Thanks for the kind offer! I would love to get back your way, but with this baby it makes it quite hard!
@@etchd_ Hey thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment. My wedding work is somewhat unique actually. I call my wedding style as landscape wedding photography. I do all kinds of wedding, but my absolute favourites are the outdoor ones. Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Moab, Zion just to name a few national parks in this region. And to tell couple's story, I often get a lot of wide shots, so the depth is not a must in fact, sometimes it's a distraction. And if I want some bokeh and close up shots, I used to love 45mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.8. And a lot of couples book me for hybrid coverage, meaning I am mainly a photographer, but I would also get some video to create highlight videos. As someone needing both cameras for weddings, it's impossible to use gimbal. Although I shoot everything in 60fps, Olympus IBIS is a dream. Oh and because I do video as well, even during the reception, I would have LED lights set up, Rotolight, if you never heard of them check them out, being able to use them as flash in any temperature with zero recycle time is pretty great. Sorry this comment got a little long. Oh and congratulations on the baby, yes as a father of a five-year-old boy, I can definitely relate. Good Luck
Thank you. Your video is really great and helpful. Based on it I decided to sell my EMX-1 and EM1M3 because this new one can do the job for both + is better except battery life of the EMX-1. I use regularly the EM1M3.
@@tenzinpeljor That is awesome to hear mate! Yes, it will be hard to beat the EM1x battery life, but you also have a heavier camera. Can always buy the grip! Keen to hear your thoughts once you get it mate!
Thank you for your kind replies. And my heartfelt good wishes for you and your family! I’ll let you know my experiences with the new camera. I guess I will be able by selling the other two cameras to finance fully the new one.
Hi mate, I actually mention that in the video. The camera won't split any clips if you are using SDXC cards. It will split them once it goes over 3-hrs! if you use SDHC cards then it will split at 4gb again!
is the 1080p video oversample from 4k or 5.1k or is it pixel bin /line skipping. i think it was mention that the 4k was oversample from the 5.1k sensor. can you confirm is it oversample in 1080p
A terrific review and v excited , love the idea of the better focus system (let’s hope there is a good part exchange system.) Yes please re extra tips. Having spent so long fine tuning the menu, on M1 Mark 3, I wonder if I will miss the old menu and whether the new one will be as good. Many thx.
Hi Catherine, thanks for the love! Glad you are excited! I can safely say the new menu is much much better. It does take some getting used to as to be expected. But everything is located where it should be and is much quicker now we can use the dials in the right direction! I still want to use it on more shoots before I provide more tips so i can be sure i get them all :)
Great review thank you! I have an em10 mark iii at moment which I really like but want more! Very interested in how much better the auto focus system is and also the low light capabilities! Also looking at R6 and A7iv for the above reasons but a little put off by the increase in lens size as all my photography is done outside and on the move ie sports, wildlife and adventure.
Hi thanks so much! Both of those cameras are really good options, but yes, you need to invest in the lenses. Honestly, coming from your camera you'll fall off your seat at the af speed on any of the cameras!
Hey Matt, love your content. Your older video about using Olympus for your pro work really sold me on the system and I haven't looked back since. So when the om1 came out, yours was the first review I watched. I'm just getting started on the video side of things now and as you mentioned, the em1 tends to be a bit too sharp. Can this be dialed back in camera or in post or is there other ways to deal with it like diff lenses etc. Thanks for your time
Hi Erik, thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad you found the other videos inspiring :) I actually just uploaded a tutorial video on how to colour correct the Log footage coming out of these cameras. I'm just waiting for RUclips to process it ha. It is long, but detailed and gives you a tonne of examples of how to work in Resolve to get your footage looking clean and poppy. I touch briefly on this towards the end in the 8-bit footage section. Long story short, I don't change anything in camera. I just put on a 1/8 mist filter that makes it look beautiful. IF I really want to make it glow and soften it then I'll use a 1/4 strength mist filter. In post you can definitely soften the image up as well. What do you edit with? The olympus lenses are super sharp, so that really doesn't help. Where are you based? I do have links in the description to the mist filters for US Amazon, but if you are in Aus let me know!
@@etchd_ Awesome, that is perfect timing for the tutorial video - really looking forward to it! I'm currently using Resolve as well so that is great. I'm in Canada but was able to find that mist filter on the Canadian Amazon site. Thanks for the detailed reply! :)
@@rztrk3311 Hi Erik, it must be fate haha. Just made the video live! let me know if you have any questions. Definitely start with a 1/8 strength as it just takes the edge off. 1/4 is quite strong! :)
Yes, its got some great features that's for sure! Hypersmooth is incredible right! Lots of digital stabilisation going on there, so there would be a crazy crop.
@Etchd Photography which seems strange to me as the em 10 mark 4 has on in-camera pano, but the more expensive and later em5 mk3 doesn't. And neither does this camera.
This is enticing. Currently shooting the Leica SL2-S but this seems to have some good features for a micro 4/3 and lighter package as a secondary camera. Are the 12800iso files usable for print in your opinion?
Hi mate. Honestly, I couldn't answer that because everyone has a tolerence for diff levels of iso. The print size and paper makes a huge difference as well. I wouldn't ever shoot that high regardless of the scene. In daylight shots you'll probably get away with prints but definitely not in low light
Hi Matt, thanks for all your effort with this review, very informative :) IMHO your sample stills and video are some of the best on YT! Don't be shy to even show more of your stills, and leave them onscreen for a few seconds (you could still talk in the background). I honestly believe it is your sample work displayed long enough that will set your channel apart, because you'll have very few competition re amazing images that speaks for itself, your work is the BEST! :)
Hi there! Thanks so much for the kind words and positive feedback! Honestly, I had hundreds more to put in, but I actually had an issue with my front tooth falling out and not being replaced until Thursday night! Leaving Friday to film and sat and Sunday to edit, upload and get ready 😂 I literally ran out of time. Adding extra photos takes so long bevause I enter the metadata haha. Glad you like my shots! I love seeing people's real work on reviews too, not just their words. Stay tuned for the bts where I'll add all the images!
Mate sorry to hear about the dental challenges, I had to start orthodontics last month to correct my bite, and I'm not a spring chicken anymore.. All the best with everything and the new bub, I know editing can chew up time! Looking fwd to more photos and video :) Keep safe! (PS I think a bot is posting bad/spam links in the comments, if you keep reporting it it may stop eventually)
@@photonspark Thanks mate! not only is it frustrating having to get my teeth redone, but bloody expensive ha. Much appreciated! yeah I saw the spam one down the bottom. Lucky its only one! have a good one mate.
DXO PhotoLab Deep Prime is the best noise reduction. It also restores loss color due to high ISO. I turn off sharpening on my E-M1ii at ISO 6,400 but lower ISO I turn on sharpening. DXO PureRaw is good also don't know on the newer version if you can turn off sharpening?
I hear good things about DXO actually. I've not actually used it yet. I have too many subscriptions and costs and am now poor ha. I might do a trial and see!
@@etchd_ Trust me when I say this there is nothing like DXO Deep Prime its mind blowing. I have the E-M1ii and can shoot almost clean ISO at 6,400. It's not like Lightroom or Topaz. DXO Deep Prime is on a totally different level. Just download the trial you'll see.
Hi Matt, thanks for you video ! Got 2 questions : Did you ever succeed working on High Res directly on Lightroom ?! ( i don't ! I have to convert to Tiff from Olympus Workspace as i find the LR result so weak) And the 2nd question is a much more important one to me : is there any improvement regarding the noise when recovering shadows ? ( That's where i find M43 is really weak)
Hi Vladimir! thanks so much for stopping by mate. Glad you enjoyed the video. Question 1: Im a little unsure at what you mean? I've always being able to process the hi-res images straight in lightroom on the older cameras. And actually only use Workspace for pre-release cameras like tis where lightroom hasn't had support for it yet. But I can definitely work on them straight away now as they updated it last week. Let me know if you meant something else :) 2) Yes, I actually have noticed the shadow detail is improved when bringing it up in post. That was something I noticed quite considerably, especially in backlit situations. That kind of has to do with dynamic range though rather than sensor size I would think. Olympus have never really said what the actual dynamic range is either so its hard to quantify it beyond the 2 stop increase they say.
Super review, subscribed! Two questions: does the hdr mode save a merged raw file? Previous camera did saved a raw of the normal exposure but not an hdr one. And in video mode, can you disable auto focus during recording / manual focus override by mapping a button? This is not possible on the em5 iii during recording (only before when previewing in videomode strangely enough)
Hi Martin, thanks so much! As far as I'm aware it will only save the jpg merged file and not the raw. This is the same with the fisheye compensation that i mentioned in the review. I wish that it saved a raw image. Yes, you can go into the button function settings and head to the video option. There you can map any button to turn on or off manual focus regardless of where the lens clutch position is :) Because i always film with lenses that have the manual clutch I just pull that back and forward as i find its much quicker! I hope that helps!
Thank you for the comprehensive overview. I'm considering an upgrade from my EM-5II, something I didn't think I'd do in quite some time. What draws me to an upgrade is the auto focus. Do you know if there is a big difference in autofocus speed from 100-400 oly lens (the lens I own) compared to the 150-400 (the lens featured in most promotional material)?
Hi Erik, thank you for the kind words! I will be totally honest, I'm not entirely sure which lens would be faster there without having used them both myself. Id say the 150-400 would take the cake for focusing speed, but even the premium lenses in the M.zuiko line up are super fast. Honestly, with the new camera and focusing system paired with your lens it will be so unbelievably faster than your EM5, you probably wouldn't notice the difference. And you would have saved yourself a whole heap of money :)
haha thanks mate. I think that it would be in the forefront of everyone's mind if they did. Do you think a conservative Japanese company would go for it? ;) ha
New subscribers here ! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this review. It was highly informative! I’m currently recovering from surgery on my spine which has thrown a wrench into my photography considerations… basically I need to consider smaller lighter gear at least for the next year. I’m looking at m43 system (years ago I shot em1 mark 1 that I loved but was put off by lack of fast enough glass to close the gap to FF with wide angle environmental portrait subject isolation). Fast forward today and it looks like Olympus now has really fast f1.2 glass such as the 17 1.2 and has improved low light performance. I was considering dual wielding om1 for stills and Gh6 for video. Wondering what your thoughts are on such a combo where I’m seeing the Gh6 as a cheap way to get both another video/stills orientated camera. Out of interest have you shot many weddings with the OM1 yet??? I’d really love to see what you could do with your creative talents there and the OM1.
Hi Tom, thanks mate for the support. And Im glad you got something out of it! I think if you have the money then that combo would be amazing, especially because you could just hot swap the glass between cameras. I haven't had a chance to shoot a wedding with the cameras yet, but it is definitely on the cards. I have too many outdoor commercial jobs coming up first though :)
Hi Helen! ahhhh then we would need to do more meetings on how to use it ;) You've got a better video camera than this one, so don't worry . It may not be as good at stills but your video specs are top notch!
Good video. The time stamps over 1 hour start with a 2.
@@marcel9568 thanks mate. Unfortunately it doesn't work. It's a common problem that seems to appear at random
What is the grip you're using at 27:40? It looks like it attaches at the flash mounting point?
Wow wasn't expecting this yet! Made my night!
Nice suprise I hope :) let me know what you think!

Hi Trevor,
Thanks so much mate! I'm unsure if I'll go in depth like that to look at the differences, only because for me, the images are fine how they are in both series of cameras. I didn't really have a problem with not enough dynamic range on the older cameras except for video. From what I've seen though you can pull back more shadow detail on the new one!
One word, WOW!!! Many thanks for doing this video Matt....Cheers
Ahh means a lot mate! thanks for the love. Im glad it helped!
Have you got your hands on the new OM1 mk ii? I would love to see an updated video with your thoughts. Your overview was excellent.
Hi Jason, thanks for dropping by. Ha, you could say that. I was part of the release of the new camera. If you've watched any of the release videos you would have seen me in Scotland and on the product page.

Great video! Amazing Camera! I just preordered it with the new 12-40mm f2.8 ii
Ahh amazing ! you wont be disappointed! I was meant to have the new lens for all these shoots, but it got sent to the wrong person and never made it to me ha. Ill be grabbing one though as the Fluorine coating on them is seriously the best!
Can metering be linked to the face and eye detection area to ensure proper facial exposure?
Great question mate, I dont believe it can be, but that is something which would be mega handy!
Excellent overview. Love the clarity and completeness....
Thanks so much for the kind words. Every time i do one of these reviews it seems to get longer and more in depth ha. I always think what i would want to hear and learn about, and that is a gift and a curse :/
Hi Matt - In your opinion - is this camera suitable for indoor sports photography (basketball) ? Many Thanks.
Hi mate. ahh well I have to be honest, I've never shot anything like that before, but i reckon if it is well lit and you are happy with boosting the iso to 6400 + and you are using the 2.8 lenses then yes!
Thanks for this review. I'm considering getting either this camera or the fugi xh2. What do you see to be the OM strength over Fugi?
Great review Matt! I could not do all the video testing with the OM-1. The wildlife photos took some time ;) Cool thanks for that.

@Etchd Photography can you comment on the OLED EVF and the rear LCD display if you are wearing polarized sunglasses? This was always a problem with previous OM-D cameras.
Hi mate! oh the dreaded polarization problem. I just checked with two pairs of polarised glasses and can confirm there was no issue :)

@@etchd_ ok no problem. Did you feel some improvement on fhd or is still over sharpened and without detail like in the previous versions?
Mostly interested in high iso and AF bird tracking. 20mp is fine but what can i expect over my EM1X ?
@@etchd_ Auto iso up to 1600 usually

Hi David! thanks so much! Which Nikon camera do you use? Every camera has its place within a toolkit, so I think if the OM-1 ticks all the boxes you need, then go for it :)
Great great explanation! Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed it my friend!
As much as I love hearing your thoughts of the camera and the system as a whole, seeing your photos makes me longing for the outdoors. But I'd really appreciate if you'd let me rest my eyes on your photos for a while longer ;D
Great job!
Are you able to use exiftool to load the raw files in Lightroom?
Thanks for the comment mate! I am unsure if you can at the moment. I use Photomechanic to edit metadata and import into lightroom, and at the time of creating this review, it wasn't recognising the .orf files yet. It will soon im sure. I'd say support for exiftool would come soon as well?

Thanks for a nice video.I have a question for you is this camera capable to combine the Live Nd with the high res mode?
Hi Victor, thanks for the message! unfortunately you cannot combine the two! that would be awesome if you could though!
Best overview yet!
Hi Steve, thanks for the support mate :)
Brilliant review! Thanks!
Thanks so much Paul!
Hi
Convinced me to upgrade from em1 mk11 👌
Hi mate, so glad you found it useful! You still have an amazing camera there, but the speed of this new one will blow you away. I love my EM1 MKII, and still use it as my underwater camera :) Let me know if you have any other questions!
I'm at 13:16 into the video, if you already answered my question in the video, please ignore previous question.
Amazing as always.
Ahh you are too kind! thanks so much.
I just got an Om1 for the holidays any recommendations on the highlight and shadow setting I know it’s at 255/0
Really wow camera 📸. Simply awesome
Thanks mate! it certainly upped what previous cameras could do! Will it make you a better photographer, only you can decide!
How does the video codec compare to the BMPCC 4K in terms of quality? Thanks!
It's good! but it really can't compare in a side by side comparison. One is a RAW shooting cinema camera and the other is not!
Resolution of LCD monitor is good? Or normal?
Resolution is more than adequate so far. It's still glossy, so in bright sunlight you will always be battling reflections, but I have my exposure warnings set so i see red and blue no matter what the light :)
Super video! Quick Question - can you place your video settings into a Custom mode like you have been able to do for stills?
Hi Steven, thanks for the love! That my friend, is an excellent question. Unfortunately, not because once you edit the video settings inside the menu, that only changes the default for the actual video dial option, which, in itself, is like a custom C button. So, if you make changes to the default video mode within say the P, or A mode then those will change, but not anything that is related to the dedicated video dial mode. Hope that helps!
Fantastic review. How'd the 20mm go on it?
Hi mate, thankyou kindly! To be honest, I haven't actually used it yet! keen though on a new adventure :)
@@etchd_ Hi, I meant taking one while panning. I'm just curious to see how the subject and the motion blur will turn out.
Good Luck
Thank you for the review. I would like to ask you to share the tricks for a 6 second handheld shot!
Hi Tenzin, appreciate the love mate. I definitely do a short video on that as so many people have asked! What do you shoot with currently?
Great review!
Much appreciated my friend!
Hello, what is the resolution of the display? Many Thanks
Hi mate. I actually mention this in the review. It's unspecified
does the 4k 60p clips from sd card split itself in to tiny ones..?
Hi mate, I actually mention that in the video. The camera won't split any clips if you are using SDXC cards. It will split them once it goes over 3-hrs! if you use SDHC cards then it will split at 4gb again!
@@etchd_ i think i missed it. ty for the reply.
is the 1080p video oversample from 4k or 5.1k or is it pixel bin /line skipping. i think it was mention that the 4k was oversample from the 5.1k sensor. can you confirm is it oversample in 1080p
Hi mate, that is a really good question, one that I will refer onto the tech guys and get back to you on!
Hi where can I download a test footage please ?
Hi mate, send me an email at etchdphotography@outlook.com
epic review, the best in the net
Always appreciate the support Alex!
I am shooting with the nikon z7ii but I may move to Olympus because of all the useful features on this camera.
Thanks for the excellent review
Hi Larry, great to hear you are making the move. The z series is great, so I'm happy the OM-1 has features that could sway you!
I’d LOVE a clip to download! Would love video and some photos in day light and low light if at all possible? Seriously thank you for doing this!
Thanks mate! yep this weekend i am going to uplaod some stuff for people to try out. Did you email me?
Awesome review. Thanks mate!
Ahh thankyou for the kind words! I hope you got something useful out of it!
Great camera and looking forward in trying it out. I do wish it had something like hyper smooth I.S. like you see in gopro!
Yes, its got some great features that's for sure! Hypersmooth is incredible right! Lots of digital stabilisation going on there, so there would be a crazy crop.
Does it have in-camera panorama stitching?
Hi, no it doesn't sorry. Not sure that's something that would make it in either
@@etchd_ I appreciate your feedback on that. Thank you! I understand where you are coming from. 🙏🏻😁

@@vladimirkarphotography ohh I see! Hmm interesting. I've not had that issue! Is it just hand held or tripod too?
I hope that helps!
really awesome camera, just ordered mine ;)
Very good to hear! You should check out my video i just uploaded tonight as it shows all the work i shot using the camera :)
Great video!
A question
Is it really black out free with live view or is it replaying last image taken in a slideshow?
Hi mate, thanks for the love! Do you mean when shooting in the SH modes?
@@etchd_ Yes. Shooting in high sequential mode.
I have Em5 mark ii + 12-40mm pro lens.. Love the size and rugged of it.. Should I upgrade to this OM1 SERIES or wait until the price drop?
Quite amazing........Best camera for me...!!
I think that it can help elevate any photographer now if they choose to push what is possible using the speed and features!
"Get shit done." Now that should be OM System's tagline!
haha thanks mate.
Great review, Matt.I am a Sony shooter but this camera is enticing for outdoor shooting! Your images were awesome. Thank you.
Hi Helen! ahhhh then we would need to do more meetings on how to use it ;) You've got a better video camera than this one, so don't worry . It may not be as good at stills but your video specs are top notch!
Definitely interested in the Timelapse video.
Hi Grant, awesome mate. I will start drafting up a shot list for it!
This is one hefty review Matt!! Honestly makes me want one for all future adventures 🙈
Hey you ;) One hefty review, made sweeter by your lovely visual presence haha thanks so much :) Let's go shoot soon!
QUESTION. Can I copy saved menu settings from an Olympus OM-D E-M1 III to the OM-1?
Hi mate! I don't believe so sorry. The menu is too different!
