So pleased and proud to have bought my 17 plate R line last year....Man, I love my car...Was without a drive for 10 years (through choice) and took some pension money to buy my 2L petrol in black. It's the only car (within my price range) that I would have chosen to buy. It's a beautiful style, shape, and it attracts lots of looks and comments from people. Wonderful to drive and handle. I think, personally, it's the most gorgeous looking car out there: the only car I would consider buying. (Except the Audi R8 Spyder).
From what I know, this 1.4 tsi with 125 hp has only turbo, the charged one has 160. The 160 was pretty unreliable. This 125 hp version was ok, and the diesels. Also the 2.0 tsi was ok
Exactly right, supercharger on the 160 hp only. The earlier 160hp version had too main faults - dodgy injectors, leading to piston failure, and a dry clutch dsg that was prone to burnout. Both problems appeared to have been solved with 2013 years and above. Used to love the supercharger sound of the 160 hp.
I am lucky enough to have gotten my hands on 2016 Wolfsburg edition Scirocco R a few years ago. Volkswagen only made 150 of them, and they truly are a beautiful car.
Think it’s such an amazing car, looks fantastic , rear visibility is pretty poor but it is a coupe, absolutely gutted when I found out it was discontinued
i had a Mk2 White Scala back in 1989 as a company car. Still one of my favourite cars ever. I just loved the golf ball gear stick. The new model looks every bit as good to me.
I'm off to look at one . 20tdi. 63000 on the clock. 9995. Love coupes. My audi a3 3.2 is dead. But at 18 mpgwill be lovely to get 40mpg. Will let you know if I get it.
Have the exact same model (only that I drive on the correct side of the road) and absolutely love it. Cheap to run, very sexy, still cozy on the inside and of course I lowered it already. Couldn't be happier with my first car.
yes you should buy a scirocco. i love my 2012 model even if it is the entry tsi model with the 122hp 1.4 turbo only. mine is a satnav model. had it over a year now. quick enough although i have owned quicker and do want quicker again. its my first petrol turbo car. first vw too, but not driven. mine is pretty good on fuel. does up to 500 miles and sometimes more to a tank of fuel, but all day every day will never goes below 43mpg unless i am pushing it hard. and so regularly its hitting 44-48 mpg. 6 speed manual. surprised that mine has 235mm 17" tyres all round, but handles really well. boot is plenty big enough for most things. mine has 75k miles now, was 57k when i got it and been reliable. breezed through its mot last month. it cost me £7200 which the aid of a trade in knocking off a good chunk. only worth 4k-6k now though. i do want to change my car though as i want an auto and heated seats and possibly a convertible. only reason for me to change as its a great practical car with very comfy sport seats on long trips.
I've recently bought a 2010 2.0tsi GT with a great interior and top spec, including Dynaudio, brown leather seats, winter pack, tilting sunroof and electric driver's seat with about 94,000 miles on the clock. I was actually looking for a VW Golf for under 6k which would put me squarely in the Mk5 territory and as they are belt driven, finding a decent example was going to be tricky. Someone turned me onto Sciroccos as a GTi substitute and with a chain driven engine on a decent spec Mk6 pushing your budget 7k+, you could save 2k if you find a decent example Scirocco 2.0GT. The boot isn't totally gimped, it's actually decently sized, it's ULEZ compliant, it's fast, it's easy to drive and it's cool looking, seeming like it's more expensive than it is. Friends were very surprised at how much I picked it up for. Yes, the suspension is a little stiff and even the petrol engines sound diesely, but for around 5k, you can essentially save money over a Mk6 Golf and be extremely happy with it. Even the back seats aren't so bad! If you're going to find a Scirocco, find one with a sunroof, it'll give the illusion of space over your head as it can feel a little claustrophobic.
WARNING, make sure you have the latest version of the timing chain tensioner on it, there are videos on youtube on how to check, major flaw on the 2.0 tsi, its so bad vwcwent through 4 upgrades upto 2012 before apparently getting it right, chances are its got its origional on it, its litrally like driving a granade without the pin in, sorry to possably scare you, but there that bad.
I've just bought a 2013 2.0 TDI R line. It's got 131k on the clock, but FSH. It's had everything done on it, and it's the DSG version. Got it for £4.6k.
My daughter is adamant she’s buying one of these when she finishes University. When she left home I found a bucket list she’d written in a notebook. She has no idea I’ve seen it but slowly and surely she’s working through that list.
At least it's not a motorbike m8. On a serious note, these are great little cars, relatively easy to insure if she can get a 1.4 and safe as a golf, just make sure it hasn't been modified - I'd say most 1.4 petrols have been
We never got the third gen in the US, but the previous two were well-received. I actually prefer framed doors, especially if the roll into the roofline - they seem more solid because they are. The glass wobbles less and the sound deadening is better. The amount of noise in this car seems to prove that. Noticed you trimmed the "Old Man & The Sea" beard back a bit - looks much better.
The Scirocco spent most of its life being compared to the TT and RCZ. I've always liked the look of them, but the various shades of grey and the small rear windows would make the interior look smaller than it is, even if the rear seats actually look usable, which is a bonus for a small coupé.
@@albanemini1274 It's not that bad though. I own a 2011 1.4 Tsi and I dont have any problems getting in the rear at 197 cm of height. Unless I'm not sitting behind someone my height its totally fine to chill out in the rear seats
those are big cars and im not sure if they are 3 door hatch or trying to be coupe like the scirocco. i test drove a 1.4 turbo and my scirocco feels better and more compact. mine is 122hp 1.4 and the astra i drove was apparently meant to be the 140hp, but a quick reg check showed it as the 120hp. either way it was rubbish. dont know how small the turbos are used on either car, but the astra felt flat and gutless. it didnt handle as well either. but they are nice looking cars though. i am glad i chose the rocco of the gtc.
Had one in 2010 loved it yes it was a diesel 2.0 but it went like a rocket lot of torque for a smallish car. I thought it was really practical the back seats dropped and it was deceptively practical great all round package. It did make you want to be a bit naughty though cheeky sporty car (even the diesel)..
I had a C30 D5 manual a few yrs ago and when I was looking for a new car I thought that the Scirocco was the ideal replacement. The v dub is a better car to drive, Volvo had weird gearing with the shortest 1st gear I'd ever seen. Loved both 🤩
@@Violinman73 I have a C30 now and had also the Scirocco in mind. Going to take a look at the 2.0 tsi manual 2017 on monday as my audi a3 that ive had for the last 12 years has finally gone bang. Always appreciated the scirocco and found one for a very reasonable price!
I had the 1.4 tsi , great little engine until it seized up . Did a lot of research into it after and it was rather common. Traded it in . When they did the facelift the 1.4 was no longer an option .
The older 1.4 engines were very unreliable, people referred to them as being made of chocolate. I personally own a scirocco exactly the same as the one in the video with the newer 1.4 turbocharged engine. I can not fault it so far, It’s a very good engine.
Jonno Lowe I’m just about to Chuck in my golf r which is on a pcp and able to be cancelled out , and then get a scirocco r with a loan. Found an 18’plate with 16000 miles , mint condition in the dark purple which is very rare. Only thing that is a negative for me is no cruise control. Thought it might of come as standard but not the case . Main reason for doing so is not many about now and always liked them. Plus sick of throwing money away on new cars on hire .
I have the 2.0 TDi 170 DSG, no DPF, EGR Off, custom exhaust, running stage 1.5 engine and stage 1 DSG. On dyno 229 (stock turbo). To be honest, its a little rocket!
Stage 1.5? No DPF, so new Downpipe... That is Stage 2, call it as you want. Stages 1+ or 1.5 are just marketing, as soon as you change a Downpipe you are in Stage 2, be it hard or soft, deal with it. That fucking "1+" is just a trick to put a nice dyno graph and then start the pub chat talking about your "Stage 1" (sometimes the + gets lost somewhere in the process) givng same power than the other poor guy in his Stage 2, and thus hinting at one chiptuner being better than the other. Bullshit.

I have the GT TDI 170 DSG. Best car I’ve ever had. I had a tt 225 before this. There’s plenty of room in the back !! 😉
not when you're 6'1 😂
Same
got the TDI for the vibrations?
@@TGreezy Then in that case you go in your own car lol (much better). I have a Scirocco, a wife and a 4 year-old child that we raised with this car and a Skoda Fabia. No problems at all in neither of these cars
@@alamos8 any issues with pistons or the piston springs ? I hear many problems with the 1.4 tsi, 160bhp especially
I have the 2012 2.0 Tsi sportline. Love the acceleration and the shape of the car. I have done 400km trips with people in the back seats no complaints because the trip dont take that long. Definitely buy one its unique shape will have people looking at the car all the time even if it is still standard.
If I squint REALLY hard I can make my Golf TSi look like this car...
Same with my SEAT Leon TSI 😂
Give me a few hours with your Golf and a hammer... I'll make it look better. 😁
Thank you for mentioning this. The twin charge engine was putting me off the scirocco but that helps thanks man!!
I am lucky enough to have gotten my hands on 2016 Wolfsburg edition Scirocco R a few years ago. Volkswagen only made 150 of them, and they truly are a beautiful car.
Do you like it. Im planning on buying the same. Been searching for a while. Settling for an auto as only 10 manuals produced.
Think it’s such an amazing car, looks fantastic , rear visibility is pretty poor but it is a coupe, absolutely gutted when I found out it was discontinued
Totally agree
i had a Mk2 White Scala back in 1989 as a company car. Still one of my favourite cars ever. I just loved the golf ball gear stick. The new model looks every bit as good to me.
Iv driven the 2.0tdi sciroco remapped to 220hp and loads of torque I think the diesel is better fun fast and reliable and cheaper to run and torque
Someone with some common sense mate love it 👍🏼
I'm off to look at one .
Pleased to hear it. Great choice of car especially as a first car. I dont agree about the correct side of the road though! haha
You should have mentioned the Corrado which replaced the sirocco from the early 90's.
The vr6 version was very popular
A cool car indeed
Corrado g60 😎
yes you should buy a scirocco. i love my 2012 model even if it is the entry tsi model with the 122hp 1.4 turbo only. mine is a satnav model. had it over a year now. quick enough although i have owned quicker and do want quicker again. its my first petrol turbo car. first vw too, but not driven. mine is pretty good on fuel. does up to 500 miles and sometimes more to a tank of fuel, but all day every day will never goes below 43mpg unless i am pushing it hard. and so regularly its hitting 44-48 mpg.
I do regret selling mine and it never let me down.
Peugeot 508 doors are pillarless & the GT models interior is so updated its amazing
I really enjoy your car reviews, its very informative yet humorous.
Haa haa if you like to sit in traffic lights “if your a girl” 😆
I've just bought a 2013 2.0 TDI R line. It's got 131k on the clock, but FSH. It's had everything done on it, and it's the DSG version. Got it for £4.6k.
Damnit Matt, now I want a Scirocco 😂😂😂
Haha sorry...
My daughter is adamant she’s buying one of these when she finishes University. When she left home I found a bucket list she’d written in a notebook. She has no idea I’ve seen it but slowly and surely she’s working through that list.
At least it's not a motorbike m8. On a serious note, these are great little cars, relatively easy to insure if she can get a 1.4 and safe as a golf, just make sure it hasn't been modified - I'd say most 1.4 petrols have been
I choose the VW Scirocco R DSG in fairness.
DSG are awful in the Sciroccos
@TRY NOT TO LAUGH I think you'll find 6 speed DSG are prone to a whole collection of problems
@TRY NOT TO LAUGH it was primarily pre 2010/2011 where the problem lies and a quick Google will give you the info bro
@TRY NOT TO LAUGH You must be saving like an accountant then. Good luck to you, you'll need it with the insurance!
@TRY NOT TO LAUGH Good luck man! Do all you can bro!
I've always liked the look of them, but the various shades of grey and the small rear windows would make the interior look smaller than it is, even if the rear seats actually look usable, which is a bonus for a small coupé.
they are usable, I got a 09 rocco 2.0tsi 200hp and it seats 4 people quite comfortably, problems begin if someone over 180cm is in the back tho...
@@albanemini1274 It's not that bad though. I own a 2011 1.4 Tsi and I dont have any problems getting in the rear at 197 cm of height. Unless I'm not sitting behind someone my height its totally fine to chill out in the rear seats
would you still recommend it today? glad i found your channel, amazing job!
I've had two and would buy another
I used to own a vauxhall Astra GTC, beautiful looking car and a direct competitor to the Scirocco. Much cheaper and very good to drive
those are big cars and im not sure if they are 3 door hatch or trying to be coupe like the scirocco. i test drove a 1.4 turbo and my scirocco feels better and more compact. mine is 122hp 1.4 and the astra i drove was apparently meant to be the 140hp, but a quick reg check showed it as the 120hp. either way it was rubbish. dont know how small the turbos are used on either car, but the astra felt flat and gutless. it didnt handle as well either. but they are nice looking cars though. i am glad i chose the rocco of the gtc.
Yours are the best car reviews on the internet!
Got a 170 PS tdi since nearly 3 years. 100.000 km so far - no problems except a
the lock from fuelcap and backroomcap
Reminds all the time on a Volvo C30
And not in a good way. Personally I think it's naff
I took what the market offered me and the C30 was a better deal (one owner, low mileage, always checked by Volvo... etc.) I had big problems with the 1st gear in the beginning (six speed manual). In the beginning I drove like a woman or a novice driver. Horrible time :D
Another polished review as normal Matt 👌👌👌👌👌👌 A little confused so I asked my wife about " if you are a girl/traffic light / vibrating diesel car business" !!!!!!! and she replied that you were quite correct and it is very true, but travelling over the rumble strips on a motorway at 70mph is far better 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
Lovely Jubbly, it's a Golf, but it's not a Golf, for me that'll be enough for me.
I saw one in London in 16 on a visit. I hope they introduce them here. I love the look of this motor.
Love these cars. 2.TSFI is not a very reliable engine though. Perhaps the diesels are better?
Coolant leaks aside the 2.0 TFSI is a good engine.
Going to take a look at the 2.0 tsi manual 2017 on monday as my audi a3 that ive had for the last 12 years has finally gone bang. Always appreciated the scirocco and found one for a very reasonable price!
The 1.4 turbocharged engine is unreliable once they get booted around engine is troublesome
the new belt driven TSI engines are pretty reliable
One of the worst engines vw ever made
I had the 1.4 tsi , great little engine until it seized up .
Bullshit.
@@alamos8 i see. Well i thought the intercooler has to be changed in order to have a full stage 2 setup. My bad
Great review as always. 👌 I think you missed one of its biggest competitors the Volvo C30? Similar concept, size and shape.
Ah yes! I forgot all about the C30. You hardly see those these days. I always liked those too. Especially the T5

Always liked the shape of these pity they don’t do a 4 door version
"about as reliable as a park bench" LOOOOOOL

The exterior is probably the best looking hatch for its price tag, the interior lets it down

Leather trim makes it look much nice inside
Just boring vw.

I owned a Mk1 Scirocco GLS back in the 80's ,wish i had it now. Mind you the steering was heavy as hell , 3 point turns were muscle developers. Absolutely loved that car.
Haha yes I cant remember the last time I drove a car without PAS
I own a scirocco for a year now and its been close to perfect for a everyday car.
The alfa brera kind off rivals the scirocco

@@xo1459 Still have it, during this time i've changed the timing chain (weak point on these engines), then i've had a few oil leaks which haven't been too expensive either and a water pump. Other than that i haven't had any issues with the engine. Make sure you get a good service history and make sure the milage hasn't been fiddled with

A solid competitor to Scirocco is Honda CR-Z, both these models have older backgrounds (Retro Scirocco and Honda CR-X from the 80s). If I'm not wrong you had a CR-Z up for sale on autotrader, really would like to see one on the youtube channel too! Nice review as always!
