I have a GTS 2016 and for a sports car its very practical. The boot is very deep and the foldable seats give you massive amount of space for shopping. I'm just under 5'11 and I managed to fit three other guys in the car comfortably. Easy to park as it's not the biggest sports car, still a head turner and not too expensive to run. Speed is fine as you have to obey the laws of the land. This is a really good all round sports car.
Just bought a 2015 plate in white, i love it already, beautiful gear change and has plenty poke when you need it, i really love the shape, i know its not everyones bag, but compared to the Vauxhall its a no brainer, the build quality and feel are top notch

+le Créatif If you want a practical "coupé" (the Scirocco is a three door, so strictly speaking a hatchback), get an Astra GTC. I'm 6'1" and easily fit in the back, the boot is bigger than that of the Mégane Coupé and the Scirocco, and it's remarkably practical for what it is. It's also a very good looking car. Where I live, Volkswagen is hideously expensive (for the price of a reasonably well equipped Scirocco you buy could a Mégane RS or an Astra OPC), and the Renault importer know less about customer service than they do about nuclear physics, so it was no contest. And you don't buy one of these for their practicality, you buy them because they make you feel good. But if it were purely about practicality, and not about price depreciation, build quality, running costs, etc, the Astra GTC is the winner between these three cars.
+Severity One The Astra GTA is indeed a beautiful, beautiful car. However I've got the Scirocco already and I'm really pleased with it. While I don't often have people in the back, I can say that it is reasonably comfortable for the average height person on the back seats. Honestly I think it has a really good balance sportivness, practicality and unique personality. In many ways, just like the Astra ;)
I have owned the scirocco 2009 edition, it has great performance & appealing exterior with the dual tone neon orange & black. My wife & I love it before upgrading it to a Volvo hatchback due to our family is expanding.
If this was developed more I believe this could have been vw's (the people's) mini lambo. It's 2019 and I still think this car is very appealing to look at, Compared to for example the golf R and that people who don't know cars would think this was a standard golf. Where the scirocco people can see it's a sporty car and looks less boring and common. I think vw could have done more with this car. vw is all about the history of there cars and the development over time. It's a shame they stopped making these cars. Rip scirocco.
I don't understand the problem with big load lips, it actually improves the capacity you can carry. For example on my mothers c1 the boot has a big lip but if it didn't we wouldn't be able to do a weekly shop in it
robz1471 would highly recommend, for a small engine it's nippy as hell and feels ultra responsive so I can only imagine what the larger engines would feel like. Seats are really comfortable and secure you very well and the ride is very reasonable. Love the cabin and the turbo gauge along with the lap timers it feels so sporty. I'd recommend upgrading the alloys to lisbons as the standard iterlagos are pretty ugly in my opinion. Worth the extra money for the GT option as a lot Is added. View is slightly restrictive but you don't buy a coupe for its practicality! In saying that boot is very reasonable and rear seats fold down easily. Stunning car and gets a lot of eyes from passer bys. If you choose to purchase I'm sure you won't be disappointed :)
The SEAT Leon SC Cupra 280 does a hell of a lot of a better job than the ageing Scirroco R as a sporty 3 door hatchback for a hell of a lot less when compared spec for spec. It's also a hell of a lot better looking imo. The question is, why buy the Scirroco over the Leon? Also, why has Carbuyer still not got around to testing it yet? I know it's extremely similar to the Golf GTI but still...
For reviews of the hot versions go to AutoExpress, this channel is more consumer oriented, they both belong to the same group but have different aims. Anyway one buys a scirocco over a leon or a golf because they like the looks better obviously or want a more coupé-ish car.

Maurazio True, but they could still calculate the mileage they got during the review process. Pretty sure they drive at least a couple hundred miles before making a judgement. And seeing as most cars these days consume somewhere between 25 to 50 percent more fuel in real world than on paper, it seems pretty pointless to quote the official figures.

I really like the scirocco but everytime I think that you just buy a small Golf for the same price. So I would prefer a Golf but the scirocco looks much better :D
One advice: If you want to talk about practicality, compare it to competition, not the practical and classic hot-hatch I expected a comparison to other sports car thinking there would be something more practical in segment (that's why you say it's not practical, huh? ). Instead we get Golf comparison. If someone is looking for normal car with sporty engine, then he would go to hot hatches instantly.
No mention of the GT86? Interestingly, it has a more usable boot as the seats fold down flat, although, the rear seat space isn't as good. It also doesn't have the same level of engine choice, although being a flat four, it's cooler. Also, it's RWD as opposed to FWD. These cars compare very well.
Robiul Ahmed I can drive, and if you push a Gt86 in the rain you'll be doing 360's. Face the facts, it has no power, a Fiesta ST would piss on it, and on the road a normal diesel ford focus can catch it out. For 2k you can get an MR2 which is quicker to 60 and has better dynamics. Face it the gt86 would have been slow in the 90's, now it's a joke.

There will always be the argument of "why buy a new this when you can buy a new that", but that really isn't the issue here. Your issue on the Fiesta and the Focus, is legitimate, though. Both of those cars are easier to drive and have comparable performance. However, the GT86, from its inception was always meant to be a base car. By that, I mean you can use it in its standard form, but it was designed to appeal to people who want to modify it, so if you want extra performance, the chassis and engine will be able to accommodate it. In fact, with some rudimentary modifications, it can keep pace with a mcLaren MP4-12C. To get the Fiesta or the diesel Focus to that same level of performance you need to spend big bucks. Yeah, sure, there is the argument that by doing this you void the warranty, but Cosworth do a service where you can keep the warranty. At the end of the day, the GT86, is a specialist, niche car. It's for someone who wants a rwd chassis (with the benefits that's go with that), with a normally aspirated, boxer engine, 4 seats (regardless of how occasionally they'll be used) and that slick coupe styling. It's also an ideal car for tuners. But for those people that just want a fast car, straight out of the box, it's not for them. They're better served with a fwd hot hatch. It comes down to Turbo FWD vs NA RWD. You either spend your money on a turbo unit or rwd. I'd rather go rwd.
Robiul Ahmed I do loads of track day with my modded EP3, i drove GT86 at Donington and it was wet. Driven at 10 tenths the GT86 oversteers violently and its skinny tyres cant hold or catch the oversteer meaning you'll just spin out. My mate took the piss also, then did the exact same thing on his turn, scratching his head wondering WTF as he spun out repeatedly . By the way i got no problem drifting an m3 with 450 bhp, gt86 is easy to drift slowly, try doing it at full pelt and feel the tyres fail.

You dont buy what is basically a coupe if you need practicality. Thats why you have the golf option. Its like saying the CLS isnt as practical as an E-class, kind of obvious.

However I haven't been able to drive it safely on the road for the last year due to an engine issue that VW can't find. I've been to 5 different garages n none can fix it! The 1.4 160bhp just has too much pressure put on the engine! AVOID!

Looking a bit dated and bland at the front. Its been out since 2008, so is more in need of a new model, not just a mid life face lift! Considering VW seem to replace their Golfs every 4 years (which is actually to often!!!), why don't they do the same with the Scirocco? The Scirroco R still looks awesome but VW need to get busy with an all new model! Like the latest GOLF GTI/Golf R VW styling has gone a bit "bland". That's the reason I now moved from GTI's, to BMWs!

Have just pent a week with my uncle in his 2014 VW Golf 2.0 TDI, and it broke down twice in a week due to electrical glitches. Make sure you have that 'Breakdown' cover!
Good review as always, but I struggle to like VW. No original design. Complete rip off. I wouldn't buy any vw product considering there are rivals which are just as inexpensive which drive better and are better.

The fact that you can now open the boot by the badge on the boot lid is the best change they made...which says a lot really.

visibility is actually pretty decent and besides that you have big clear retrovisors and looking behind isnt even necessary

MS well the caddy is much less important than berlingo and tourneo, hard to encounter any with windows, while the french vans are everywhere.

I find if you knock 20% off the manufacturer figures then it works out pretty accurate.

Scirocco R, Pan Roof, DSG, Recaro Wingbacks, Dynaudio is what you want. Stage 1 Map and it packs 320bhp
I really like the scirocco but everytime I think that you just buy a small Golf for the same price. So I would prefer a Golf but the scirocco looks much better :D

Way too slow, and it fails in the rain and the price is a joke. A Honda S2000 pisses on a GT86 in every situation and it's less than half the price.

Looking a bit dated and bland at the front. Its been out since 2008, so is more in need of a new model, not just a mid life face lift! Considering VW seem to replace their Golfs every 4 years (which is actually to often!!!), why don't they do the same with the Scirocco?
The Scirroco R still looks awesome but VW need to get busy with an all new model! Like the latest GOLF GTI/Golf R VW styling has gone a bit "bland". That's the reason I now moved from GTI's, to BMWs!

***** I don't do massive miles but I do a few roadtripes a year. I own an Audi A3 2.0 tdi which I am super happy with but it is getting a bit old. Is there a huge difference compared with the 1.4 tsi and the 2.0 tsi?

Have just pent a week with my uncle in his 2014 VW Golf 2.0 TDI, and it broke down twice in a week due to electrical glitches. Make sure you have that 'Breakdown' cover!
