I can scarcely imagine how angry, or lonely, or bored, you must feel as to be so compelled as to make a concerted effort to be ugly, passive-agressive and rude. It’s indicative of a pervasive and deep sense of self-loathing,
and that makes me so sad and sorry for you. Some people just can’t be happy for the success of others.

I haven't finished the interview yet but her mental illness and this being a cover-up are linked. Her mental illness was used to prop up the theory that backs up the cover-up. Basically, "Oh she was crazy and crazy people do crazy things so let's just dismiss the possibility she might have been murdered". It is just another way mental illness is stigmatized, minimized, and misunderstood.
Edit: Thank you for speaking about this. I've felt this from the very beginning.

It always gives me faith in humankind when I see two professionals being mature in discussing serious matters. And I do mean professionals who have a heart. Thank you for this interview with Jake Anderson.
There are a lot of RUclips true crime that are pretty much video-recorded **podcasts**, and as with regular podcasts, I find I can multitask and do chores or cook or whatever while just listening. That never happens with this channel because it IS different.
Also, this story touched me like none other, and it always has felt near and dear to me. It demands my full attention and makes me heartsick. I’m at all not confident the legal system did the right thing.
That was an interesting observation about the synchronicities. I find that in Elisa’s story, synchronicities abound.
When I see a photo of Elisa, because I’m much older I keep finding myself wanting to say, “aw, little girl,” even though she’s a remarkable young *woman*. I feel like I just want to give her a hug and tell her we’ll figure out what went wrong - I’m sure a lot of us feel the same.

I think Elisa was murdered by someone that either lived at the hotel or worked there, possibly both. Also, I'd like to know if the girls she was originally rooming with had boyfriends, or at the least guys that came to visit them while they were there, they could be the potential suspects.

When i had a psychotic episode, i might have thought it was a good idea to hide in a water tank. I thought everyone was out to kill/punish me. I was in a psychiatric hospital, wandering around the corridors in search of a safe place. No rational thinking. I hid in a tiny, dark, smelly old room with big washing mashines and trash. They searched for me for hours. I did not take the prescribed drugs, i was sure it was some kind of poison. It felt like i was in a horror movie. IF i had stumpled upon something like water tanks, it is very possible that i would have used them to hide. I was psychotic after a suicide attempt, i took all my anti depressants, sleeping pells ect; it totally messed up my brain. Its something you cant unterstand if you have not been there. You imagine AND do the most dangerous things. Would not wish upon my worst enemy. I think it is very possible that Elisa died by accident or commited suicide because of her illnes. Maybe the hotel wanted to cover it up. But i whatever happened, her illness played a part. Sorry for bad english, i am from Germany.

I still remember stumbling across the elevator video in a "Top __ Creepiest (Whatever)" compilation about 5 years ago, which led to BrainScratch Episode 1. Your coverage of the story just happened to coincide with one of the most trying times of my life (yet even more synchronicity orbiting this case), and it was your humanizing of Elisa which reminded me I wasn't alone and helped get me through it. Just sharing my experience... 8 years ago, I was diagnosed with a bipolar 3, or cyclothymia. I was drinking too much, and going through a chaotic time of my life. I went on lamictal, and my life got better. Two years ago, I had my daughter, and I started seeing a therapist every week, and she put it this way: The brain is made up of neuropathways. (Water and electric). Think of the brain as a stream. EVERY change... your nutrition, your sleep, your habits, your self-talk... can change how the brain's pathways think. Similar to when a storm makes the water in a river swell, and it starts to find an easier pathway. The problem is that our brain often takes the easier pathway, without us even realizing. In the last 2 years, my psychiatrist has stopped practicing, and in my area, it's incredibly hard to get into someone. I've have done walk ins, and have talked to 3 psychiatrists in the last 2 years... and I have been diagnosed with something different by every psychiatrist- bipolar, OCD, and borderline personality disorder because psychiatrists are so busy, they spent 15 minutes, before assessing what "criteria" you fit, and writing a script. The moral to my story is this: Find yourself a therapist. Someone you talk to for an hour. See them every week. Don't peg yourself into one diagnosis... because the brain changes constantly. Be proactive, and do what you need for your own self-care. Reach out for help constantly. Don't be lazy, and just do medication, (like I did) because that does not set you up for life-long success. Medication is helpful, but there are cognitive behavior therapists, there's dialectic behavior therapy, naturopathic doctors... Do your research, and fight for yourself.

Absolutely. I see a highly vulnerable young woman here, and most likely accidental death, but a possibility of foul play not entirely ruled out. I also see incompetence on the parts of the hotel and the police, and the sensationalist media letting the stories run wild. Most unfortunately, I see that Elisa Lam herself, who should be the focus of the story, usually gets lost somewhere in the middle of all the theories and blaming, which is possibly the biggest tragedy of it all.

In the weeks following the cabin fire and his death, I actually went to the scene and crawled under the fence like a crazy person and now have mementos from that cabin fire. That being said while I had first been diagnosed I was actively using meth. I have been clean from meth for 14 years. I took every medication for bipolar disorder known, and I just couldnt do take them once I got pregnant with my 5 year old. 6 years ago I stopped taking them, even the antidepressants..... and let me tell you, I have learned to curve the manic phases while the depressive phases are harder to handle... for example I have been in a funk for weeks now. But I have NEVER FELT BETTER AS A WHOLE!! now i have to say, going off all those meds has saved my life but at the same time that doesnt work for everyone. I was more manic and more depressed while on meds. I have been able to be a great momma and a great person now that I'm no longer on these meds. With my closing, I just wish that every psychiatrist would take a look into the meds and our chemistry. There are tests they can do to show what type of med works with their chemistry and keep them away from the meds that can cause suicidal thoughts to increase.

As a side note, people who are on drugs are often treated with bipolar medication because the brain has been thrown out of wack by the chemistry of the brain being effected, and rebounding by the drug. Some people are born bipolar, which is different. I don't want to discount some people "healing" themselves with natural supplements, but it can be dangerous for some people to be off their medication.

Happy anniversary, John and my fellow Brainscratchers! 🍾
Nice to have Jake on the show today. Some great information here and a reminder to remember the most important aspect of this case and that’s that a young woman lost her life and her memory should be honoured for the people left behind who loved her very much.
If there are lessons to be learned by getting at the truth of this case, whether it be recognizing what a vulnerable individual is incase we’re ever in a position to help someone one day by recognizing the signs of a mental break or enforcing hotels and other public institutions to abide by safety measures such as no access to the rooftop for guests, etc., then these are things worth talking about without dishonouring Elisa. Regardless of the specifics of what happened to Elisa, these are topics that have been raised and well worth an ongoing conversation.

What an amazing young man to delve further into this investigation, poking at things that people want kept hidden etc. The phrase that comes to mind about his investigation is "where angels fear to tread". I've watched all of your (John) videos and particularly enjoyed the visit you paid to the Cecil with another brainscratcher. I shall look forward to next week's interview and also wish good luck to Jake with his book tour. I'm in UK, I'll definitely be getting a copy. Keep up the great work...eventually something HAS to give and we will finally get to the truth of what happened. I can't imagine how distressing this must have been for Elisa's family and hopefully one day they will have some answers 🤞 Congratulations on the book!

Probably most people who think a crime happened just cant imagine the state of mind you have to be in to climb into a water tank. They just cant imagine someone would do this. Thanks for this guys. I've had a keen interest in the Elisa Lam case for some time. As much because it is a fascinating story, but also because of the mental health aspect.
My life has been marred by the blight of mental health issues. I was told, at the age of 35 (nearly 5 years ago) that I displayed strong signs of ADHD/ADD. I've been prescribed Concerto XL (Adderal) which definitely helps with the fleeting mind and almost provides that calming, deep breath required before making a decision. I guess it helps with impulsivity, in that respect.
However, I still have crippling depression, latterly with anxiety and the feeling like I'm totally unsuited to the requirements of modern society. Like it's a bad fit for me! I can communicate perfectly well, but it's more the emotional side of things.
I've often, progressively, felt it was a form of bipolar, from what I have learned over the years, but had a pretty bad experience with a negative diagnosis from a doctor I never actually met. He based his findings on a single incomplete and inaccurate report, without seeing or speaking to me.
That was nearly 10 years ago and I've been in limbo since, really. Not worked much in that time, though did once have a great career, when in my 20s. I've struggled with addiction too.
I was, with my mum, officially caring for my elderly dad, for the past couple of years, but he died a few weeks ago. Having moved closer to my folks to assist, I guess I'd been staving off dealing with my own issues by busying myself with that responsibility.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your story, Jake. I'll ensure to buy a copy. I was going to ask if you had any tips regarding getting a diagnosis, but I guess it's a moot question, given our differing available pathways (I'm in the UK), so will bid you all the best for future endeavours and thanks again! 👍 Great work, as ever Jon. Thanks to you too. 👍 Have a great weekend and happy anniversary to Brainscratch. 👍 May it have just as strong a future!

The whole "woo" factor of this case came about due to the nature of the video that was released of Lisa in the elevator, and how strange her behaviour appeared. The fact that this video had been released with it being at the wrong speed, is mostly what caused this "woo" factor, and in my opinion was a deliberate attempt to add weirdness to Lisas' last known moments/movements to give credibility to her mental health being her cause of death.

@@sofiab.9129 No need to apologise, your English is fine Sofia. Thanks for sharing your experience too, mental health is no joke, as I've gone through some tough experiences with it myself.
I haven't had quite the same experience as you, although I can imagine that when paranoia strikes as bad as that, then yeah, you'd probably see any hiding place as a good to place to escape from who/whatever was the root cause of that fear.
Now, whether this was the case with Elisa, we'll probably never know as too much time has passed, and there has been too much confusion of the facts of the case, such as whether the latch of the water-tank was open or closed, and the video in question has clearly been tampered with. Unless someone from the Hotel or the initial investigation comes forward to tell the truth, all we have is speculation.

Great guy. Two great guys. Glad I bought that book now; even gladder with John's word of approval! Noticed when I found it that there were mostly good reviews but one or two that criticised the writing, the competence of the writing or the style, but another review countered that and put it in the context of a 'gonzo' style of writing or something like that. I took a leap, thought that I could probably dig a gonzo style, especially given the nature of the book and its more subjective approach to investigation and sleuthing or to the mental illness, mental health side of things. Soon as I got hold of a copy, I can tell you, it's really very well written and that's based on a cursory glance at pages here and there. Really no criticism on that front, grammatically or skilfully. Looks to be very compelling - well, we know that already with the staggering amount of theories, mysteries and synchronicities surrounding the case - and absorbing, in terms of how it's presented by Jake Anderson. Looked at the index earlier, the topics covered are impressive to say the least and I can't wait to read it. Just as soon as I'm done with the current book I'm reading. And John's involvement in this documentary film too. That's great news, but I can also see, from listening to the two of you speak, the perspective and approach of the author towards this creation and documentary work. I sure hope you can find further funding and get this completed soon, Jake!

For people to talk about how wrong it is for everyone to try to get recognition (even profit) on the back of this case, while doing exactly that, is a little hypocritical, isn't it? Has the family endorsed this book? Maybe I am missing something?

I think it is about the INTENTION. The big difference is: Do you use her case to get clicks/ Money or do you present her case to help in any way, for example to get it reopened, AND also get Money for it, but you would have done it regardless of the money.

I have made the suggestion before but nobody’s entertained it’s merit that Alissa was under the impression that she was auditioning to be in a movie perhaps dark water was the script she was rehearsing with on the elevator and off the elevator. Perhaps she was lord to the Cecil with the intentions of making it big in Hollywood or perhaps being an actress in some movie. It seems like an online predator could’ve lowered her there

Probably most people who think a crime happened just cant imagine the state of mind you have to be in to climb into a water tank. They just cant imagine someone would do this.

I was almost finished writing a very long comment about mental illness, when my phone died. 🥴 Such a bummer because it took me so long to formulate and lay out, and I’m exhausted now. Perhaps I’ll come back later and try to write it out again.
Either way, great interview, excellent guest, very well said, and full of compassion and kindness for the victim and those of us who also suffer from mental illness. Love you both so much, and so grateful for the work that BOTH of you do!!!

Seeing that it took 2 weeks to find her, I personally believe the water tower wasn’t her original location when she was found. I’ve always believed that the body was stashed elsewhere until either before or after the cops came and searched the hotel. Or that a customer complained of the smell and that’s how it ended up in the rooftop water tower. Also someone who’d know how to dispose of bodies would know that removing the clothes will somewhat speed up decomposition when thrown in large bodies of water.

Happy 🍾5💕 year mark Brainscratch! 👍 Thank You John Lordan for all of your hard work and selfless dedication that you put into spreading awareness in lesser known (and well known) cases. I like how you bring us into the situations along with you so that we can all put our heads together and have decent conversations together... not because we are here to glamorize other people's more unfortunate situations but because we truly *care*, and all of that starts with you John!
    Thank you

Shocked smiley faces, comments about the RUclipsrs hair... John is the only one I know who REALLY cares and wants to make a difference in the REAL world. No fake compassion, straight forward. Others are unbearable at times.

The lid. The lid!!! That detail has always stuck out in my brain, especially when I learned it was a non-hinged lid. I don’t subscribe to the foul play theory btw but the Santiago thing is weird. The lid being closed when the police checked the roof explains why the dogs didn’t pick up on the tanks. But who put the lid back on, the police, or one of the hotel workers? Maybe not a police cover-up, but a perplexing absent-minded mistake in this already perplexing point. I thought during the video, what if Santiago put the lid back on at some point in those 3 weeks without thinking anything of it? Maybe he saw it was off, without thinking, put it back on? I don’t know, but hearing he moved to Mexico after getting a large sum of money really chilled me. Perjured himself to cover up negligence from himself and the hotel? I wanna know the truth in this case *so* bad.

Just discovered the Lam case two days ago, and have binge-watched the LordanArts entire playlist on this issue. I want to know how this host went from suspecting Miss Lam's social media accounts were not real (in his early videos), to thinking they are a useful tool for finding out who she was as a person. Its totally fine if he changed his mind on it, but he did a 180 on it without giving us any explanation at all.

Did they ever finish the documentary and release it to public? Would love to watch it. I’m reading Jake’s incredible book “Gone at Midnight” and am blown away by it. Also deeply touched on a very personal level as someone who suffers with bipolar and major depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD etc. Jake and Elisa’s openness in writing about their mental illnesses have helped me more than I can ever possibly articulate.

What annoyed me about the “ghost stories” aspect of the way others would cover the case were the holes in information, over and over, leaving nothing but a presumptive DUN DUN DUNNN that, obviously without new facts, did nothing for me.
What’s amazing about the *real* work done on this case is the way so much information that informs this case is still out there in terms of cultural touchstones, different communities’ conversation on the topic (briefly touched upon here re: the Chinese community) and history including that of police corruption. Whatever has gone on with Elisa lies upon the crossroads of so much of it with the potential to expose a lot of it.
Seems like, whether that be because of money or location or psychological significance, a lot of... power resides at the Cecil, that various organizations and entities act to preserve the framework of.

I would honestly do an experiment seeing how long it would take a decomposing body to effect the water/water pressure, with the conditions being the same as it was at the Cecil Hotel, then finding out how long it would take, and how noticeable it would be to notice those changes; and then comparing those results to when the first accounts were of hotel guests complaining about differences they noticed in the water and see if it’s possible her body was placed there after the first search... because the way I see it, if you can tell right away there’s problems with the water, whether it be taste/pressure/color etc., and there weren’t any complaints until way after, then you got your answer... although I’m not sure in the details of if that tank was being used or if there even were any complaints etc.

    • @lynsirobertson3527
      @lynsirobertson3527 4 года назад

Obviously a body decomposing in water will decompose differently than outside in the element. But also faster as water breaks the skin down (notice how your fingers and toes wrinkle up when you take a longer shower/bath/swim).
I imagine it would take 2 to 3 days for the water to become gross enough to make a difference.

Who was the employee who attacked the woman and got into her room with the master key, I wonder. Honestly I’m leaning toward an active serial killer situation, someone working or living in that hotel that the police don’t have the inclination to deal with besides hushing the loose-cannon aspect of bad press.

It seems to me she met some dude and was playing a kinky game of hide and seek. They went up to the roof after (like most people do on buildings like that) he killed her and dumped her in the tank. Whenever I've been to a building in NYC, Miami, LA etc its always "lets check out the roof". Not saying I'm right, but in a grounded reality this makes the most sense.

@LordanARTS thank you for your work. I am convinced there is a cover up in the case. Amy Price lied saying the cctv cottage wasn't tampered with and it clearly was. Could you phone the LAPD or work towards opening the case files again? I bet the LAPD wouldn't even entertain the idea, the question is why? Also I don't think elisa had room mates who complained about her bad behaviour. I think they used this to push the narrative she was insane and done this to herself, a clever cover up on their part. I also agree with you about her clothes being on the roof at some point. I have read the book gone after midnight and I agree with the conclusions because they are the most logical. I hope in the future you can return back to this case and maybe have a breakthrough again. Jake and John you are amazing people. Thank you for your contribution
