    A very tragic death. When Steve called him a liar, the impending guilt of Bullock’s son accidental passing hit him. He couldn’t take it anymore. The cycle of guilt continued with Steve. He was haunted by this death.

      You’ve misinterpreted this , he was upset about Bullocks son but that isn’t why he killed himself . Imagine being a stand up wholesome good guy but a nasty drunk piece of shit like Steve can say an do whatever to you just because of the color of your skin . He knew that Steve couldn’t be satisfied and he knew wherever he went there would be another Steve because that was his reality as a black man

    Ngeneral INSTANTLY knew what just happened. That's exactly what his face said. The others look just kinda surprised but Ngeneral just knows.

    Now we'll never know where the real board is.

    I took his motive as explosive frustration coupled with pride. He couldn't take the abuse and wanted to die with some honor. If you've ever argued for hours on end with an insane person that, for whatever situational reason, you're stuck with - this scene makes sense. And you can't ignore that racism is the only thing holding Steve up in these exchanges as anything close to a man. Hostetler just hit his boiling point and knew nothing was gonna give. Guilt might factor in as a catalyst, but it's not the whole picture.

      he had tried to kill himself after the horse accident as well. Hostetler always seemed like he was moderately mentally ill the whole series

      @@cromandum217 yeah probably anger management and on the spectrum. But his life sucked and all he did was stand tall on everything even if it wasn't his fault. Guess I just feel mental illness isn't the whole reason

    I remember the two people I watched it with couldn't buy it at all, but I felt (then as I do now) that it was totally plausible, though I couldn't really explain why. On top of the other comments that give their solid reasons, I think a part of it is the fact that he also realized that the Steve types of people in the world are legion and he'll probably never escape that kind of angry disdain and distrust in the remainder of his lifetime, no matter where he goes. Anyway I love his actor

      That’s actually a really good analogy of Hostetler’s thoughts

    Honestly been a while since I last rewatched the series but I'm honestly surprised that Seth didn't just beat Steve down there (if he didn't)

    Anyone who goes that nuts at being called a liar is probably a liar. Doing himself in like that didn't do his reputation any favors

      I see it as Hostetler’s guilt finally getting the better of him after what happened to William Bullock, and Steve’s insistent nagging in his ear along with Seth Bullock himself being in the barn, he just couldn’t take it and he was in a vulnerable state.

      Hostetler was a good man in a fucked up time. Imagine being him in the 1880’s and everywhere you go, you’re called vile things, treated as a second class citizen, abused, and now this asshole, after you try to deal w the guilt of a horrible accident, is sitting there calling you a liar, and WHY? You’ve given him no reason not to believe you, he’s just an asshole who feels free to berate you and call your personal character into ? because you’re black. You’re an old man, and it’ll never change in your life time. People hate and distrust you, all for something you have no control over and they’re too ignorant to see any better. What would you do?

      A black man living in a world that despised him. He just couldn’t do it anymore, on top of the guilt for William. Scene had me in tears

    This scene never made sense to me. If he was going to kill just himself out of guilt he would of done it long ago. I think the better scene would be him beating Steve's ass, killing Steve, or even killing Steve and then killing himself.

      @huellbabineaux7433  Год назад +2

      I do think you’re right, but I’m just gonna assume that the combination of Bullock being in his barn along with Steve’s insults was the perfect storm that just set Hostetler off.

      He just doesn't care anymore he wants to die! He's so frustrated at this exact point and sees no future worth living.

    • @JT-qw1cn

      That defeats the point. Hostetler wanted to be seen as the hard-working good person he was instead of what people like Steve saw him as. Killing Steve would only show that he was right in his racist allegations, which is why Hostetler opted for suicide.
