      I think just more Mace Windu would be awesome. I always hoping he survived that fall and came back at some hidden point in history. The guy perfected form 7 from a predominantly Sith style into a weapon for the light and he was only true master of it by the end. Such valuable knowledge shouldn't go to waste.

    21:19 I always thought Kenobi was fighting Vader primarily to give the others time to escape. He had said previously that he's too old to go out on adventures. It always seemed to me that his intention wasn't to defeat Vader, that he knew that somehow it was Luke's fate to defeat him on his path to becoming a Jedi (part of Kenobi's "being mindful of the future"). He knew he was to become one with the Force eventually, and giving his life to help his friends was intended on his part. Saying that Old Ben was too old and frail to defeat Vader misses the whole purpose of the battle, in my opinion.

      Maybe, but he still didn't have a chance of winning.

      +Paul Rhodes Yes, but not many Jedis did. Vader was known for killing most of the Jedi during the purge even after getting his armor.

      +Daric I think you are correct in the sense that Obi Wan knew that he himself was not destined to defeat Vader. Although I think he did truly intend to kill Vader at first. But then, when he saw Luke and the others trying to escape, Obi Wan willingly gave his own life because he realized (at that moment only) that it was the will of the force that Luke defeat Vader; as you can see in the look Obi Wan gives Luke right before he lowers his guard and allows Vader to kill him.

    I gotta say it, I would love to watch another catfight. This time between the two biggest love interests with dark tidings in the history of Star Wars lore:
    Mara Jade Skywalker vs. Bastilla Shan
    nowhere near as "Mary Sue" as their respective husbands, and since Mara Jade is my favourite Star Wars character, anything with her to me is pure gold; even if she were to lose the match. Cheers :D

      Lucas once told that there's no story past Episode VI, and I quote "The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned and Luke doesn't get married."
      That being said, I like Mara Jade myself, but I hate almost everything in the post Ep VI. I believe we may find some nice characters in EU, but very bad storylines. the prophecy of the Chosen One is trashed and forgotten, we have the lost tribe and basically Sith everywhere, not including Palpatine who keeps cloning himself. Most of the EU is trash, don't you agree?

    • @JakeEigenbrodt
      @JakeEigenbrodt 10 лет назад +1

      Wes Collins hahahahah Obamacare.
      The EU is not trash. It's an "Expansion of the star wars Universe". E+U=EU.
      Yes some stories overlap and don't make sense, but they should at least bring back some of the stories that don't correlate with Episode VII

      Wes Collins probably bastila because more skilled than mara jade but mara jade is very powerful. Very complicated, I don't know. Let's give it a decision by taking everyone's comments.

    Was Kenobi even trying to beat Vader? I always thought it was a delaying action to give Luke time to escape. This would mean that he wouldn't be trying to win, just prolong the fight.
    Furthermore, the fight between him and Vader was guided by a different philosophy of lightsaber combat. At that point the idea was that lightsabers were incredibly heavy, explaining the slower technique used by Kenobi and Vader. The explanations given here are merely an attempt to unify canon, between two portrayals of Lightsaber combat. Remember, while Kenobi would have been meditating a lot on Tatooine, he would still be fighting sand-people so his skills would not have atrophied that much. Plus, during A New Hope there wasn't any need for force push, and the SFX necessary to portray telekinesis were probably too much of a bother for it to be portrayed.
    Let's not kid ourselves, if George were to redo that lightsaber battle Kenobi and Vader would be doing some pretty impressive stuff. Therefore we can question the validity of the battle seen in the movie and assume greater ability on the part of Kenobi and Vader.

      I always saw it as a symbolic gesture to Anakin. Like Ben had died years ago when he failed to save Anakin and failed to live up to his own Jedi Code. He let Vader strike him down because it wasn't about being able to fight him or not it was the dialogue.
      "If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." I think he was telling him that by extracting his revenge he no doubt thought about constantly that he would realize it was pointless or even self defeating. He would find that he was empty and start to think on his actions and time spent. By allowing himself to die to Vader he killed the last part of Vader. I think that if not for that moment he would have stayed Vader and not had his change of heart in Return of Jedi.
      But this is all just conjecture and I'm sure it can be proven wrong. I simply like to think that old Ben thought long and hard how he hurt Anakin when he was supposed to be his teacher and knew the only way to unite Anakin and his son was through this act of penance.

    • @matthewsands1572
      @matthewsands1572 10 лет назад +2

      I think he realised he couldn't beat Vader and realised that Luke would try and help him if he continued the fight so decided the best way to save them was to sacrifice himself. I don't think he wanted that from the beginning but he just decided it was the best way to save them. Remember he said "if you strike me down...." meaning he wasn't on a suicide mission (otherwise there'd be no if) but wasn't afraid to lose his life if needed. So yeah, I do think he was trying to beat him just couldn't so let Vader beat him.

    • @TheSunStudio1
      @TheSunStudio1 10 лет назад +2

      He was unable to win, if you read the official novel you will know. Ben felt exhausted and he believed that eventually Vader will cut through and overload his defense. So he choose to suicide in order to finally became one with the force.

  • @SurferMan127
    @SurferMan127 11 лет назад +30

    Okay, for your force powers section... we KNOW that Obi-Wan had REALLY strong force powers during the Clone Wars, YOU SAID that his body had atrophied, in part, because he had focused heavily on meditating/communing with the force during his exile. I think we can safely assume that by the time he became "Old Ben" he had cultivated a strong enough connection with the force that he probably had Yoda-like abilities to lift HEAVY objects and do crazy shit with the force. We just didn't see it because George didn't want to give the secrets of the force away all at once in the first film. Plus, Obi-Wan was a humble guy who wasn't prone to large displays of power... doesn't mean he wasn't capable of them. I think when it comes to ranking force powers, you should assume that if a force user has a strong enough connection to the force that they can transcend the physical and become a force ghost, then they can do all the lower-level telekinesis shit too. In that regard, I should probably note that you chronically underrate Qui-Gon's powers in many of these videos as well.

    There's a legend how Liam Neeson came to Star Wars. Obi-Wan smirked to Luke a second before he passed away, and this is why Lucas was searching for an actor who smirks to play Qui-Gon. Neeson and Lucas spent half an hour talking without a single word about Star Wars, and then Neeson was immediately accepted!

    On the surface I really do agree with your conclusion here Jensaarai. On the surface there's no debate, just look at the two films and it's blatantly obvious. But the problem as I see it, the thing that needs to be addressed, is that while, yes, we're dealing in demonstrated abilities, we also have to be aware of the fact that there's nothing to suggest Ben Kenobi had LOST any of his previous abilities. And if we're unable to find suitable reasons as to why he might, then surely he has to be considered capable of using the skillset he honed as a younger man, regardless of what we saw. As pure speculation, I can see a Jedi living out in the outskirts of Tatooine being focused and dedicated towards peace, which is to say Obi-Wan most likely focused on and learned the more subterfuge types of arts within the Force, as demonstrated by his Force Persuasion of the Stormtroopers, I'm sure he became legendary in that and Animal Affinity. But why wouldn't he have a powerful Force blast in him? Yoda was still able to lift an X-wing, surely Kenobi could do something similar? We never heard of Obi-Wan losing his connection to the Force.
    There's one factor I want to put forward also. Vader with his durability and direct style may actually have prohibited Obi-Wan from showing his true abilities, perhaps he simply didn't have time to delve into his cache of techniques. Qui-Gon was neither physically as powerful nor mentally as aggressive as Vader, and that is a factor when considering the duel, I believe he would have had less pressure on his defence and more ability to make decisions fighting Jinn. Didn't Vader adapt to Makashi in his cyborg state? And Kenobi definitely struggled when Dooku used the style. Different combatants will be different challenges, and I think an Ataru-inspired Qui-Gon is an entirely different fight for Kenobi.
    On the other hand, perhaps Obi-Wan has simply decided to die, and follow Luke eternally as a Force Ghost. If this is true, he gains a useful ability to be ever-present, shows Luke the power of the Force, and allows him to see the true extent of Vader's malice, essential in counter-acting Luke's possible compassion for his kin. Lucas DID say he had to kill off Obi-Wan, and Yoda was the replacement character for Luke. Under these circumstances, we never truly see Ben's ability because he's chosen to undertake a far different role than a simple combatant, and let's be honest, as the saviour, Luke needed to stand alone, he had to become used to carrying the burden of protecting and dueling without aid. Perhaps if Ben lived he was worried about Luke becoming dependent, when he simply had to be strong on his own.
    In any case, good video. I personally believe Obi-Wan had more than enough in him, even at that age, to take on Qui-Gon. I think his experience and success in actual battlefield scenarios, his enduring survival in the middle of nowhere, and his feats such as defeating Maul and Grievous, all stand firmly in his favour, and a battle between the two would be very close, but ultimately I don't doubt Kenobi's experience and overall talent in the Force to come through for him.

  • @kpag3030
    @kpag3030 9 лет назад +14

    Ok. While your analysis is relatively fair based on video evidence, I think the relative times these characters were developed throws a big wrench in your argument. Out of all the featured characters in all the movies, old Ben kenobi might be the most underdeveloped as a duelist and force wielder. At the time a new hope was made, the thought of old, wizard like Jedi having to duel never crossed Lucas's mind. Hence, yoda and obi wan were relegated to "merlin" like character traits. By the time episode 2 was released and you had yoda and dooku flying around and standing two to toe with young warriors, everything changed. Based on this perspective, I'd have to assume, given better technology, kenobi holds up much better. He still probably has some rust to shake off, but force abilities and force augmentation alone would have been enough to defeat the very limited qui gon. At least limited compared to what we all know obi-wan has shown us in the past. Obi wan in 30 seconds or less

    The only problem I have with this is how he was predicted in the 4TH movie. When Lucas first came up with the idea of the Lightsaber duel he said that they were supposed to be very heavy two handed weapons. Impossible to really fight with 1 hand.
    When Empire came out he changed it into the fast moving acrobatic dance that made the genre so fun to watch.

  • @justinwallace269
    @justinwallace269 10 лет назад +7

    I wouldn't say this was exactly fair, since Old Ben was portrayed in a very different movie with very different goals. If a new movie, book, or graphic novel was created for Ben Kenobi you'd see a very different interpretation. All the concepts of Jedi combat and age suppression weren't fleshed out yet by any means and George Lucas really had no idea what he was getting into (or doing for that matter). It's safe to say that the fighting skills demonstrated by Ben & Vader was a product of choreography as opposed to lore. Jinn and Ben were not as connected to the force as Yoda, Sidious or Dooku, who could use the Force to make up for infirmity and Ben was at least 10 years older than Qui-Gon, which for ordinary aging men can make a world of difference, so I wouldn't say they're in the same age category either.
    I also feel it important to make mention of Kenobi's amazing use of Jedi mind powers and Force healing, which I felt were underrated in this vid or in the case of healing not mentioned. Luke most likely had a concussion after being beaten into unconsciousness by that Tusken Raider's rifle - Ben healed him in a matter of seconds. Qui-Gon's use of Force powers was elementary compared to what Kenobi demonstrated in 'A New Hope'.Not only did Ben drop the mind trick but he also managed to freely move through the most heavily guarded instillation in all the Empire completely undetected with the exception of Vader, whom he allowed to detect him as part of his plan for Luke and the other's escape. His use of the Force and tactical mind made him virtually invisible, and I don't think the incompetent security of the Trade Federation and their brainless droids compare to that of the Deathstar, so this is a totally different feat. He also did that cool trick with making groups of Sand People think he was a raging monster. It's safe to say that Kenobi would get the drop on Qui-Gon since these tactical advantages are the exact Kryptonite to Qui-Gon's impulsive mentality and fighting style. Kenobi's Soresu would be more than capable of repelling Jinn's less than amazing Ataru, and his superior experience would allow him an easy counter. The fight would end with Ben knocking him unconscious after a short duel that starts on the wrong foot for Jinn.
    "Sorry, old friend, but this time you'll have to let me handle the fight alone."

    Jensaarai1, thx for the very detailed and highly analytical perspective on the Star Wars characters we have all grown to love. That being said, I like to point out an important detail about Old Ben that was not readily mentioned. Old Ben's confrontation to Darth Vader was not "timidity" due to his infirmities as much as it was an incentive for young Skywalker. As a force spirit, Ben, offered more help and guidance to Luke as Ben would have while still living. Ben staged his death, at the hands of Vader, because Ben knew that Luke would eventually know who his father was and Ben's sacrifice was just enough to prevent Luke turning to the dark side. Your thoughts. Love what you're doing, please keep it up.

      I wouldn't go that far with both opinions! Because of Mace's Vaapad style he always has an advantage vs a darksider! He can fight Sideous to a standstill so I believe he can defeat anyone on the list. But at the same time each has their own style and skills that could overcome Windu. We don't know with certainty who would win in any of the matchups.

      ***** Windu can and has used abilities like grip before (Grievous), please note I am a big Windu fanboy so I did read his book and watch the shows with episodes with him. He's actually very strong in the force and is able to push whole battalions of droids, augment his own physical ability to match Vader, etc.... I think hes about the same if not better. Though Vader is a genius with experience, and good at improvising on the spot so I wouldn't say the fight would be one sided in any sense. I do wish Jen would do the video so I'd hear his opinion on it.

    Also, Dooku did not have that much practice for a time since leaving the Jedi order and battling Kenobi and Anakin, albeit it was a shorter amount of time. He was also MUCH older. When you say Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, I'm assuming you're talking about Empire Strikes Back or Return of The Jedi Luke. In which case, he would get his ass handed to him by his 20 something father, no question. Grandmaster Luke however, would wipe the floor with Anakin.

    I still think people underestimate Darth Vader. It sees that after he got used to his suit it wasnt as uncomfortable as everyone puts it. It also seems that adjusting his style made him more agile as well and all and all he has made up for his injures. That being said can you do a vs between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader? Only you can do it right Jensaarai. It will be a battle for the ages. Help me Jensaarai you are my only hope.

    Heh, no offense Jensaarai, but it sounds like you decided to flip a one-sided battle so that it'd be in Qui-Gon's favor for a change. "Clone War Kenobi would have annihilated Qui-Gon, so I'm gonna let Qui-Gon annihilate Old Ben" is basically what you did here. :P
    Anyways, good video all the same. There's a couple of fights that I'd love to see you cover.
    - Young Luke Skywalker vs. Starkiller(Sith Stalker), and yes... I did get that from the FU Hoth DLC.
    - Emperor Palpatine vs. Emperor Vitiate
    - Satele Shan vs. Yoda. And yes, I know someone else asked for it already, it just sounds like a cool match-up.

    I only have one thing to say that might help your channel.
    I love what you do and all the other RUclipsrs that do these Versus series.
    Though, yours is quite slow and interesting yet I almost fall asleep just listening to it.
    If you just could speed it up and take out the most unessecary parts from these videos, I'm sure that you would get a bigger fan base!
    Cause that's just how people are these days. People, especially young people, want fast paced videos.
    Like a iconic thing you say at the beginning and unique.
    I think these "Versus" videos will spread alot, throughout RUclips if more people like you, get great facts in shorter amount time of time.
    I personally would want some jokes being cracked, like in the middle of the video just to get the spirit up. And towards the end of the video, you should talk faster and have a more dramatic music so people can really get into it and get more excited!
    Though, these are just my opinions! And I hope that you read this! Cause I think that you have this (no offense intended) But you have this slow type of speech and some people might think is kind of boring.
    But I mean, Jwittz have that kind of voice and I find him really. interresting. (Probably because he do say some funny things and talks about some fun facts.
    But Star Wars is alot more serious than Pokémon and Nintendo Games so I know if it would be hard. But just a advise from a fan.
    And sorry for this comment being soo long!!!
    And I would really want to see Qui-Gon and Old Ben Kenobi VS Dooku.
    FYI. I am not a HardCore Star Wars fan. But this match, to me would seem quite fair.

    What do you think about what Jinn may have been in his prime? The Jedi apprentice series doesn't show much, but I figured him out as an equal to the best duelists in the order (if at 60 years of age he managed to fight for 15 minute in full ataru offensive, stamina sure wasn't a problem in his prime). I think that a "prime" Jinn could defeat ROTS Obi-Wan, but that's just my opinion.

  • @SolidShepard
    @SolidShepard 9 лет назад +1

    I love how you continually bring up how Obiwan was sooo intune with the force he became a force spirit, as a point......now before I continue, Obiwan is actually my favorite star wars character....well except Revan that is....but the point I'm trying to make here is, Qui Gon INVENTED the force spirit technique! he was the first.....i mean he TAUGHT YODA FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! and then YODA taught it to Obiwan

    • @ColorfulHalo
      @ColorfulHalo 9 лет назад +1

      +James Bennett Not quite ;) Qui-Gon taught Obi-Wan the technique during his exile on Tatooine! Yoda had already hid on Dagobah at that point.

    • @rromerca
      @rromerca 9 лет назад

      +James Bennett I mean it was said that Qui Gon didn't master the technique but was on the way to mastering it . He only was able to do full reappearances in locations of immense force connection while Yoda and Obiwan mastered the technique.

    • @Dakeryas95

    • @SolidShepard
      @SolidShepard 9 лет назад

      +corysyourman OK well fair enough. I was just saying YODA clearly says at the end of episode 3 to Obiwan that he had been learning it from obiwans "former master". so to claim he doesn't have a good grasp of the force is wrong.

    • @Dakeryas95
      @Dakeryas95 9 лет назад

      Solid Shepard Jinn has a great grasp of the force, so does obi wan. Their use of competitive force powers don't really relate to their comprehension of it all that much. They're both primarily duelists, jinn just seemed to have a hard time and a lack of interest using it in battle

    I think the fact that you recognize the difference between Obi-Wan versus Old Ben is something that isn't completely recognized within the Star War community. Especially, in a versus match. (In my experience at least.)
    The ONLY quibble I have (and it is minor at best) is the fact that I thought the music in the video wasn't as epic as 'the Broken vs. the Sage' video you made.
    For some reason, I felt it merited a little more....fanfare?
    But this is just minor fanboy bitching. You came to the correct conclusions and made a good video.
    I'd be curious to see Old Luke and a Dooku match-up.

  • @kieranlock3070

    In new Cannon, old Ben kills Maul. I beleive Ben was being a pure distraction, living up to his duty of protecting Luke in the only fight we see him in when he is ancient. He kept it simple and let Vader play with him, because that was his plan. So I think Obi never really did let loose into the force, his whole plan when they were boarded hints at the tactical mind, but his abillity to sense Luke in trouble, his abillity to become a force ghost instantly suggests if anything obi wan became Stronger in the force than previously in the Clone Wars.

    I don't think Qui-gon should be placed in this versus series simply because he has been training in blasting deflection and there was no sign of any siths roaming the galaxy until he fought Maul. If he practiced to fight against both jedi and sith effectively, he would most likely destroy some of the people that you named him against in this series. That's just my speculation.

    Love your videos, but I disagree with your interpretation of the Old ben / Vader fight. I think Old ben carefully maneuvered the fight to where he wanted, like his fight vs Anikin in episode three, then sacrificed himself for several reasons. One to transcend his physical body and become one with the force. Two to strengthen Luke's resolve. Three to get the A team to escape the death star. I also think you underestimate the physical shape required to survive in a dessert and don't think Old ben would crumple with one kick as you suggest. I also disagree his form would have gotten rusty, a well disciplined Jedi like Kenobi would be practicing his form until his death, this would also help keep him in shape. That aside, thanks for another informative and thought provoking match up.
