    His fighting style was not well optimized for long duels due to the strength and power he incorporated into each blow. He was accustomed to finishing duels quickly. Maul had wisely deduced this on Tatooine and sought to separate and tire out Qui-Gon in order to defeat him. Until Qui-Gon is isolated, you’ll notice that Maul is on the defensive the entire time.

      That’s false Obi Wan was already a 25 year old master of Ataru Maul was 22 and should have easily defeated him on Naboo the only reason Obi Wan lasted long before getting disarmed was because he was rage amped over Qui Gon’s death which boosted him…. In a fair fight Maul would eat Kenobi’s lunch 10/10

    Qui-gon Jinn was not only powerful; but he was the most righteous Jedi of his era. He was a true disciple of the Force. He followed the will of the Force above all else. All of the other Jedi (yes, even Yoda) used the Force to serve the will of the Republic (and all its corrupt politicians).
    Qui-gon is hands down my favorite Jedi.

      Obi-Wan: Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil!
      Anakin: From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!
      Obi-Wan: Why would you say that?
      Anakin: Of all people, your own Master disobeyed the Jedi Council, causing his rejection to be a member. Qui-Gon saw the allegiance of the Council to the Republic, placing the favor of the people over the face of the Force itself. They define good as the common good rather than the will of the Force, using its power for the benefit of their supposed democracy which is in the eye of the beholder. Qui-Gon saw the way of the Force, he let its will guide him, and not the other way around. The Force is not balanced, and I was created to do that. Open your eyes, Obi-Wan! It's time for you to see the truth behind the lies, as your old master did. Together, we can overthrow the Chancellor, and bring peace and justice to the galaxy.
      Obi-Wan: Anakin, perhaps you are right. While I don't agree with the Chancellor on everything, I do believe that the Jedi have twisted the Force to their own will. The Old Republic never used the Force in such a way.

    The one problem I have with your assessment is that at his physical prime. Jinn was second only to Yoda in mastery of Ataru, saying he's less skilled than other master's is incorrect. He's more skilled because he surpassed the shortcomings of his chosen mastery through growth. Unlike Yoda that could just Force power through his age weakness.

    • @SingleTax
      @SingleTax Год назад +1

      In Revenge of the Sith, Ob-Wan was clearly in his physical prime. Yet Yoda, despite being *hundreds* of years older, still insisted that he -- not Obi-Wan -- was the only one "strong" enough to battle Darth Sidious -- arguably the most powerful Sith Lord in the history of the galaxy. And Obi-Wan didn't argue, because he knew Yoda was right. So it would seem the definition of the term "prime" is questionable insofar as it applies to Jedi masters.

    • @LoremonX
      @LoremonX Год назад

      @@SingleTax A Jedi gains strength in the Force through study, meditation and practice. The point when Humans are at their physical prime lies fairly early in our life cycle when medical care has extended life span into the numbers of our time. In Star Wars their medicine extends that even further. Anyone that is 70+ years old has far more study and practice behind them than they did at their physical peak of 30ish. They may tire quicker and not meet the same level of physical strength, but they can be far more powerful in the Force. Now Yoda lived to 900 years old. There was no Light Side user as powerful as Yoda at that level. Obi-Wan could have withstood anything Darth Sidious tried with a Lightsaber, but the second he put it away and showed his true power. Kenobi would have been wrecked. Even if he got his lightsaber in the lightnings path. The sheer power would have slammed him against the wall and destroyed him. He had no idea how to accept the darkness and redirect it back the way Windu, or Yoda did. Even Yoda got tossed because he didn't have a saber to channel the energy.

    • @geoffreyedgson7875
      @geoffreyedgson7875 7 месяцев назад

      Not entirely. Yoda is THE master of Ataru, and holds practical mastery of Soresu and Shien, plus an academic master of all other Jedi style. Qui-gon is an innovator who created his own-style, which in practice is extremely practical and shares one weakness with Niman: capable of anything with few consistent advantages.
      Jinn is moderately good at blaster-deflecting, moderately good at crowd-fighting, and is otherwise grounded and strength-oriented, in practice similar to a Niman master who favours Shii-Cho, Shien and Djem So. His foundations in Ataru and wide technical repertoire are impressive, plus in practical application he is leagues ahead of other traditional Ataru purists like Ven Zallow or Siri Tachi.
      On the other hand, he has no back-ups and attempts to leverage his advantages to overshadow his short-comings, instead of adapting his own style to be less taxing, or learning pure Makashi or Soresu as fall-backs to his own style. Plus, Qui-Gon lacks the wider tactical awareness of Master-Kenobi, Plo Kon or Shaak Ti, nor does he exercise combative Force-powers in their league either.
      Hence why I agree with Evannova95's assessment of Jinn as mid/high council Master, but overshadowed by the Tier 2 and Tier 1 leagues

  • @ariesstorm9577
    @ariesstorm9577 4 года назад +5

    I see Qui-Gon Jinn’s move set being most akin to Ki-Adi Mundi’s style. With that being said, since Ki-Adi was the only Jedi left standing against Grievous on Hypori (this is pre-Force crushed leading to hacking cough Grievous), and with Qui-Gon’s live in the moment philosophy, then I see Qui-Gon being able to stand against Grievous for a short amount of time. I do not see Qui-Gon lacking in defence, it’s just that the only times we see him actively defending is when he has already spent much of his energy. On Naboo he had kept up a solid offence pushing (or being drawn by) Darth Maul throughout much of the Battle of Naboo (at least 10 minutes movie time and an unknown length of time within the events themselves) and on Tatooine he had appeared to have sprinted from Mos Espa to the Outskirts where the Royal starship waited, a feat that young Anakin Skywalker struggled to maintain as he began to tire. Add to that the quick reflexes he employed as Maul snuck up on them and how tired Jinn must have been already, he kept up a decent defence against the much younger Sith.
    The question as to whether Qui-Gon could actually beat Grievous should come down to the context leading up to the fight. Qui-Gon is no fool and would likely have at least studied his opponent before engaging him, likely hearing a personal account of the General’s fighting capabilities from his friend Ki-Adi Mundi. With that knowledge and coming into the fight fresh, he would actually keep up a defensive screen by way of Form III. Soresu is not his preferred style but it is a style he knows as all Jedi receive basic training in almost all lightsaber Forms. And if he employs elements of his former Master’s style, then he could slip in the precise moves of Form II to strike at Grievous’ limbs. Another defensive style that Jinn has demonstrated in TPM is Shien, shown by his ability to precisely redirect blaster bolts back at shooters. Given that Shien is geared to dealing with multiple attackers, the question is whether it is as capable of defending against Grievous’ four lightsabers as Kenobi’s use of Soresu was. Again I must refer to Ki-Adi Mundi, since in the comic series Outlander I believe it is implied that had Qui-Gon Jinn still been alive, he would have been the one sent to find Sharad Hett on Tatooine not Ki-Adi Mundi. And if (a decade older) Mundi can stand against General Grievous then surely Qui-Gon Jinn as he appears in TPM can, right? Maybe. But the difference between Jinn and Mundi is their preference for supplementing Ataru with Shien and Soresu respectively. Mundi is able to defend against the rapid strikes of Grievous thanks to his use Soresu close quarter defence.
    So, after all that my conclusion is the same as the video’s but it would not be an easy victory for General Grievous.

    • @dazdavis7896
      @dazdavis7896 4 дня назад

      Maul is superior to Grievous. Without debate. Qui-Gon could hang with Grievous far more than “a short time”.. He met Maul head on until he tired out. Maul was the superior swordsman yes, but he still hung with him the entire time. Grievous would not be able to overwhelm him in the same way Maul did. Maul was Grievous’s superior. There is no large gap between Jinn and Grievous. Idk why he seems to insinuate there is either.

      He would have been an entire decade older (he was sixty in the Phantom Menace). So, he either would focus more on defense to combat his further declining stamina, or he would start to incorporate a bit more planning and preparation into his style. I say that because he would likely have problems relating to understanding that he needs to do so. Especially as his age creeps on up.

    • @wolfgod6443
      @wolfgod6443 6 лет назад +1

      Rob George Malak and Jarec are probably a bit lower tier. Malak is a great duelist and both are strong in the force, but the magnitude of Dooku and Malgus's abilities are too great, plus both far exceed Malak/Jarec in lightsaber combat.
      I'll have to admit, despite how much I love Malak, he's one of the weakest Sith in the lore (not counting "sith" like dark acolytes during the Old Republic, I mean true sith lords). He's still incredibly powerful, and certainly better than dark jedi like Ventress or even Jarec (at least without his Valley of the Jedi buff), but he's falling behind slightly in both skill and the magnitude of his powers compared to other sith. He is a well balanced fighter though, and one of KOTOR's developers said Malak was more skilled than Revan in lightsaber combat, but in saying that it also proves that Malak isn't as smart a fighter as Revan, so he doesn't really have an advantage over most other sith.

    • @robgeorge4581
      @robgeorge4581 6 лет назад

      +Wolfgod 64 Sorry about the late reply.
      While I do agree overall that Jerec is a inferior duelist when compared to the likes of Dooku and Malgus, in terms of force abilities he isn't far off in terms of variety of techniques and overall skill (his power is tricky due to The Valley amp being usually a present factor). Depending on the matchup, Jerec's force abilities gives him some hax to work with, and hax can make up power or skill differences. As for Malak, I don't think he's actually far off in terms of skill or magnitude compared to Dooku or Malgus. Malak's problem is that his entire skillset is based on him directly leveraging his power which as you said means he isn't that smart as a fighter as someone like Revan causing Malak to come up short in the overall package against fighters who are overall in his league. Either way, he gives these kinds of opponents one hell of a fight.

    • @wolfgod6443
      @wolfgod6443 6 лет назад

      Yeah I think I discredited Jarec a bit, he's probably the closest thing to a sith among dark jedi. That in of itself is impressive. I often attribute his more unique abilities as "Early EU when no one really knew the rules or standards", but it was explained at some point that Jarec developed his own abilities specifically to beat Sidious (best of luck to him, that'll never work). So what Jarec does makes sense...sort of.
      I think Malak doesn't have the right skill set to handle most other sith. Warriors like Revan and Maul are smarter and faster than him, and Dooku and Malgus have the full package of skill and strong force abilities (Revan fits in the latter after KOTOR 1 though). Malak feels very much like a Jedi killer specifically. He's better at using his combat experience and force abilities to dominate weaker opponents, even large groups of them (hence his powerful force stuns and wide lighting strikes). I'd argue that Malak is more capable than other sith when it comes to defeating multiple Jedi, so he'd be more effective in say, defeating Obi-Wan and Qui gon (though now I want to see a Malak vs. Qui Gon matchup), but he doesn't have the right skills to deal with singular foes who are on his level like Maul or Malgus (I think his goal was to become so strong that no one would be on his level so he doesn't need to worry about it, but he didn't reach that level).

  • @dax5791

    You should check your vocabulary--I think you've mixed up a definition and used "antithesis" where you meant "apotheosis". Otherwise very good vid. Qui-Gon has always been one of my favorites, partly because of his non-traditional nature combined with being more closely in tune with the Force than most traditionalist Jedi. Usually, when somebody starts rebelling against the Jedi Order, they're tempted by the Dark Side... not so much Qui-Gon, whose strong internal moral compass keeps him from even considering it no matter how much he rebels.

  • @chinaboytag1
    @chinaboytag1 7 лет назад +3

    I honestly think that Qui-Gon Jinn is one of the most underrated jedi of all time. I would definitely put him right behind Mace Windu. I'd also easily take him over Anakin or Obi Wan in a fight, but then again, I would also argue Darth Maul as being more powerful than any of the opponents in the first 3 films, except Sidious (perhaps). From what we saw on screen anyway, that's the way I have to view it. Also, I feel like both the sith and the jedi do not use the force enough in the movies. I actually think it should be a point for Darth Vader, because he's limited by his machinery which should make it even more impressive that he can, but instead, we really see a lot more lightsaber twirling than force using. Yoda really seemed to be the only one in the movies to use the force correctly in multiple ways, throwing objects, catching lightning, and augmenting his actual speed to make up for his tiny size. Everyone else just seems like they would get slaughtered by a good force user, even though they are very skilled at using lightsabers. I would be cool with it for a guy like Windu, but the vast majority of jedi should be using the force during combat more regularly. It just looks like they don't even train to be using or fighting opponents with the force, which is weird because that is the entire point of being a jedi.

    I still remember watching Phantom Menace in theaters and how much of a shock Qui-Gon's death was. Seeing as it was the first movie in a new prequel trilogy, you just kind of had an idea he was going to be a major protagonist for atleast more than half a film. But In hindsight it had be that way. They needed to introduce the character makes us feel a genuine connection to him, them "move him to the side" in order to bring in the dynamic of Obi-Wan and Anakin so the story could go where it needed to in order to have it all make sense and a cohesive story up to A New Hope. Qui-Gon was awesome though especially the way he never feared questioning things or seeking out what he felt to be the right path he needed to go down, despite what other council members may have thought. Bit to much of an "Out There Hippy" as far as council thought lol!!

    Qui-Gon's greatness is not merely measured by his combat prowess, or force power...but also his NON-combat skills; his wisdom, his perceptions, his deductive powers and his academic success. Jinn was the quintessential Jack of All Trades, but he was also GREAT at all trades...great not exactly meaning exceptional. He took a holistic approach to his time as a Jedi. Consider this; his death warranted the attendance of Mace Windu AND Yoda.
    Among that, his kindness and compassion were surpassed by none. Put Yoda, or Mace in the same position as him on Tatooine, and they would have only rescued Anakin. Jinn, even though he was shut down immediately (and he was wise enough not to pursue) DID try to get Shmi as well.

    He was actually offered Grand Master and refused. He literally felt his time was near. He discovered Immortality and taught it to Yoda. He knew he was going to die; knowing he fulfilled the Jedi prophecy. His main power was Life Force. He gained a lot of power but like most humans, die a short age span. He can match and defeat Dooku alone; let that sink in. Jin can lift the six stones too. He was very intuned with the force. Giving the illusion as if he was going on instinct. If it wasn't for Jin, if you actually pay attention, The prophecy would have never been fulfilled. He's more powerful than most give credit. He literally was offered Grand Master and refused; let that sink in.

    I think, as good of a job you did, you underestimate and misunderstand the power of Qui-Gon. Mainly because you focus to much on his Puraos as a fighter. He was a Jedi Counselor. His ability as a fighter is a testament to his engenuity and flexibility but his true powers were to understand the force and what it wanted. In this he may have even been more powerful and one with the force than even Yoda. His diplomatic skill was unmatched and he always gave very sage advice. He was not the best fighter but his role was not really a fighter. It was to be an agent of the force. He did that rather well.

    Qui-Gon vs Grevious
    I don't necessarily believe Qui-Gon would loose. Grevious is obviously known to flee battles. He'd probably take advantage of that since Qui-Gon doesn't moves as fast. Also, the clones showing up on Utapou would tempt Grevious to do just that as he often does.
    That massive force push Kenobi did...well since it seems Qui-Gon is better with the force than saber combat and being an out the box thinker as you describe he would probably force push him, just like Kenobi, but into the open space below where he would be stunned, dropping his lightsabers, and surrounded by the clone army where they blast him then and there. After all, that's why the clones were there in the first place.
    Qui-Gon may not win, but he wouldn't lose either. It's not like saber duels always have to end the same way. Armies are in fact a resource to use.

      William Henning I agree, Zannah wouldn't even draw her blade, she would just attack him mentally and cripple him that way. I don't think many Verses series creators really understand how her sorcery works. They always say "this person is a Jedi, so they have gotten past their fears, so Zannahs spells of madness would have no effect of them" and I find that so annoying. Bane was fully aware that Zannah would use her madness spell against him, and he had heavily researched how to deal with it, and he had gotten past all of his fears, channelling them into his dark side power. And despite this, when Zannah used to against him in their final duel, she bought him SCREAMING to his knees. And when she using to against Set Harth, she put him in a COMA. This isn't something anyone can just shrug off. Her base line powers are also very underrated. He force push smashed Bane into a wall so hard it cracked his back, despite the fact that Bane has welled up his power, and reacted in time to channel it into a force wall. And her own force wall was incredible. Despite the fact bane didn't have his lightsaber, in their second to last duel, he only used evasion and lightning against Zannah, stating himself that telekinetic attacks would be useless because she could throw up force walls, and even outright stated that the ability to throw up a force defence was the first thing he had taught her. With a lightsaber, when she was about apprentice level in terms of training (Rule of Two), she was able to stone wall the assaults of a low level knight and a high level knight at the same time. And by her prime (Dynasty of Evil) she held up a strong defence against a raging Bane trying to kill her for almost the entirety of the duel, incredible considering how masterful and overwhelming a swordsman Bane was. And for those who say she has no offence, literally the first thing she did when she got her lightsaber was practice a counter-attack sequence with Bane, and she was EASILY able to overwhelm Set Harth (about mid Jedi knight level) with pure offence in their brief duel. Bane considered her his equal, and Bane is very overconfident in his own abilities, having nearly gotten himself killed as a result throughout the trilogy multiple times by getting in over his head with a lack of judgement regarding his own power level. Bane considers himself almighty, but admits that Zannah is his equal. Nuff said.

      Zaluk I disagree, he would no way last as long as Ki-Adi did, assuming we are talking about legends grievous. Jiin is a bit too offensive to take on grievous, and doesn't as a result have the defensive output to keep up with grievous's multi-angular assault. Ki-Adi Mundi > Qui-Gon Jiin in my opinion.

    • @zaluk1041
      @zaluk1041 7 лет назад

      That's a fair view, but to me fighting as near-equals with Maul and even forcing him back at times is better than anything Mundi has done.
      "He drove Darth Maul backward about the rim of the overhang, keeping the Sith Lord constantly on the defensive, pressing in on him steadily. Qui-Gon Jinn might no longer be young, but he was still powerful."
      --- Source : The Phantom Menace Novelization
      Keep in mind he does this despite Maul having knowledge of Jinn's abilities, while Jinn had not been aware of Maul's skill with the saber staff beforehand. Not to mention Jinn breached Maul's defenses on more than one occasion, as Evan pointed out.
      Evan does a good job of analysing Jinn's style and he mentions that Jinn is able to seamlessly switch from offensive combat to defensive combat. How high you view Jinn is really dependant on how high you view Maul and to me, Maul is an ROTS Kenobi lvl fighter, so by extension, Jinn is around that lvl to me as well.

      I know about the third person cover quote, and I do think Caedus became more powerful in a raw force and breath of ability kind of way, though i would bet on Vader in a straight fight. I just can't find Luke's quote.

    You brought up Kyle Katarn... I would love to see him realised in something modern. I mean he was a beast.... like a younger Qui Gonn would can use blasters / explosives in conjunction with indiscriminate force powers like lightning push pull speed mind control, even healing..... aswell as being a powerful lightsaber duelist.... I dunno why there aren't more videos on him as a character.

    MACE WINDU VS QUI GON! WHO IS DEADLIEST!?!?

    • @anakinpalpatine8725
      @anakinpalpatine8725 4 года назад +1

      Andrew Henry I would say Mace Windu, he nearly took out Palpatine, where Qui Gon lost to Sidious’ apprentice

    • @andrewmartel916
      @andrewmartel916 4 года назад

      @@anakinpalpatine8725 mace is the perfect jedi for fighting sith though since he turns his opponents darkside against them with Vaapad. Mace would still win probably, but it would be closer than that comparison as sidious is alot stronger than maul. i would love to see it honestly. Qui gon unfortuantely doesnt have the same level of feats due to the time of his death being in episode 1 and obviously there just weren't sith to fight before then.

    One of my observations of the video regarding your overview of how the duel would go. You dismiss Jinn's tk powers because Grievous is a cyborg and sanctity of life. He could disable the general's limbs and leave him living, no?

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 3 года назад

      I never understood how Grievous is even a challenge to a Jedi for that reason. He is unable to counter any telekenetic attack. I can only assume it was the chaos of battle that prevented the time to be taken to use force attacks (except when Windu did it) Grievous to Windu: You should have gone for the limbs.

      Not even close.

    • @relyks8645
      @relyks8645 7 лет назад

      We'll have to agree to disagree then. There's more than enough evidence of his power. Though who knows how much of it is canon anymore.

    • @williamhenning4700
      @williamhenning4700 7 лет назад +1

      There are at least 3 characters who are canonically stated to be more powerful then a far more powerful version of Revan ( Vitiate, Plagueis and Sidious ) and then there's the logically more powerful individuals like Luke, Yoda, Krayt, Caedus, Jaina, etc. Revan's certainly powerful but not in the top 5 and DARTH Revan doesn't even scratch the top 10 given how much weaker he is then his Reborn and SoR incarnations.

    Really!?I thought this is a versus series.Well then, how about a battle of (obi wan kenobi vs kyle katarn), this is my favouritecharacters in star war.EvanNova95 if you do this battle this is so fun.

    • @williamhenning4700
      @williamhenning4700 7 лет назад

      Given Evan favored Kyle over Dooku a while back, I imagine he'd go with Kyle in that fight as well. Though he may have changed his position since then.

    • @houbertcanitio2199
      @houbertcanitio2199 7 лет назад

      This battle will be fun and i think that kyle will do the offense and obi wan first is defense then counter.

    • @relyks8645
      @relyks8645 7 лет назад

      @William Henning - I think this would be a great match-up. I think Kyle Katarn might win due to his probable superiority with the force in general, but I think Obi-Wan is quite underrated as a force wielder. Obi-Wan managed to match Anakin's force push during their duel in Ep. 3, which is really impressive considering Anakin is said to be among the greatest force wielders of all time. But I think it would be best to avoid the
      A > B and B > C therefore A > C type of argument, since that doesn't apply very well at all in Star Wars.

    I cannot understand why good characters such as Qui-Gon Ginn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader), and Ben Solo (aka Kylo Ren) are killed off; and useless characters such as Jar-Jar Binks are allowed to survive. Jar-Jar, that worthless, slobbering, stupid, ugly racially stereotypical piece of dog feces should have been decapitated by Darth Maul, Obi-Wan, or Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber! Jar-Jar Binks is the SUCK in SUCKINESS. Qui-Gon, the in my opinion, the PERFECT JEDI, was killed off before we got a chance to see how powerful he really was. Qui-Gon should have been around until at least Revenge Of The Sith; where he could have died trying to defend The Jedi Temple from Anakin (Darth Vader) Skywalker. Instead, we are left with that poop eating gungun, Jar-Jar. What a WASTE!
