Some of the “wastegate rattle” noises that people hear are actually the sound of the exhaust flex fitting at the bottom of the down pipe disintegrating. It can also sound like the timing chain is going while the bonnet is open. However, if you get under the car, it is obvious that the exhaust is making the noise.
For the air intake piece that connects to the turbo: If you plan to take of this piece for some reason, get a new one, because it will break when you take it off! It happened to me and I had to pay 80€ at the local dealership. Online they are half the price.
Hi, I have just bought a 118i on a 62 plate, 65,000 miles on it, 3 owners, full service history, HPI clear, the car was going to cheap to pass up, after doing some research on these cars, and watching a few of your videos, it’s seems to be the same problems that occur, oil and coolant leaks and obviously some bad problems, anyway took a chance on it and it looks like the only oil that’s leaking is from the turbo oil supply pipe? Lot of people are put off these engines, me also at 1st! but a lot of the time it’s a cheap easy fix, like o rings for a couple of pounds sorted a few leaks, there is still nice ones of these about that have been looked after and not abused, great little cars I think if you look after them.
Hi there, the coolant leak at the back of the engine is from the temperature sensor gasket or housing. I had the part changed also and other coolant pipes/o-rings changed as the leak travelled due to the overheat.. no issues after that. I also had the plastic turbo pipe damaged and noticed the engine is consuming oil! Your review is very accurate! I’ve also had my mechanic advise me that the coils have a habit of giving in. No issues there so far but I am completely stock at the moment. May I ask what kind of air intake do you have installed? Your turbo also looks a bit different to mine(f30 n13). The car also sounds great with the decat! I’m hoping to go down the line of a decat,cold air intake and a tune soon. Thanks for another great video filled with valuable information!
Has any of you had problems with idling at cold start? It only does it when the car is really cold... It does it for a minute or so, and doesnt idle nicely. It goes up and down from 950 rpm to 850rpm? Thanks

I own a 316i in Malaysia and after a good 8 years and 130k milage in 2023, there is issue of leaking from multiple points like the temperature sensor ,engine oil sump cover as well as the gear oil sumps. The exhaust as well as the turbo VANOS had to be replaced as the drivetrain error sensor pops up and turbo get deactivated making the car engine limp with no power. The water level keeps getting low indicating radiator water leak and the coolant pump had to replaced. All this cost RM 10 K to replace and now the car is like brand new. Remember the N13 engines had lots of plastic components and the gaskets are soft. This causes issue with multiple point engine leaks. That's why the warranty for this car is 5 years. But the 10K spent was well worth it as the petrol consumption and drive feel of this car plus the audio system is fantastic. Hope to last another 8 years till the next major service.

Hi there. I just got my car back from the garage to replace the valve cover, oil filter housing, and turbo oil lines (oil leaking issues). But now, I am getting a fault reading, "exhaust vanos solenoid valve activation line disconnected". Are clearing the code .. it doesn't come on until 2 weeks later. Any idea what's going on? Solenoid failing or something else.
I want to buy a 114i but the spec I want with red leather seats I can only find with 130k miles, I want to buy it and do stage 1 for atleast 200bhp, do u think it’s worth it? What should I do before the remap if it is worth it (car costs £3.5k)
Great video! I have the same car version 2016 116i benzine with power issues. Car loses like 40% of its power when driving in gear 5 and 6. feels super lazy and not sharp enough! I took the car to 2 different repair garages, they both said it could be the Turbo but not 100% sure. cost of changing the Turbo is around €3000. Everything is fine, no fault codes when reading the car. Any suggestion what it could be?
i have an 118i F20. the car never told me to check for oil, and so if it start making noises i checked oil and i had to fill over 2l . i was pissed that the car didnt tell me anything.

I have a bmw 114i with stage 1 remap, my ignition coil failed and blew out my ecu😢. Lucky I had a guy to repair it otherwise it would have cost me £1200 from dealership! The guys who tune cars should really tell and explain the importance of replacing the coils before a remap. Iearnt the hard way but was lucky to get it repaired I suppose to getting it replaced. I bought my used 114i with 60k Miles on the clock, drives beautifully, except I got it home, my dad saw leaking engine coolant, and Crank chase compression had white smoke... :( I wanna remap to 138bhp and improved torque for better economy on motorway driving.... what do you think I need to do first to make it more reliable.. coils?

i started having problems at around 200.000 km , the coolant sensor went bad and now there is an occasional tik inside the turbo ( i guess ) when running stationary

Ik heb dat bij garage van asbroeck heylen laten doen. En de kosten voor de turbo zelf te laten ombouwen was +-€700. Maar da's zonder demontage en montage kosten
Turbopro in Utrecht (Nederland) doet het ook. Je moet ze wel bellen, want ze houden niet van mails😉. Ik spreek uit eigen ervaring, maar ze leveren wel goed werk. Kijk maar even op de website onder het menu Hybride Turbo's.
@@fabianvanzwieten6608 Zeker doen, al kun je stage 2 ook makkelijk met de standaard turbo doen. Dan heb je ook rond 240pk. Maar hybrid is net wat degelijker. Mooi moment voor revisie 👍
How reliable is the stage 2? I have had all your problems in mine, all solved. Always stage 1 and I beat the fuck out of my car. But only the problems u said nothing scary. Is stage 2 reliable? For someone that goes constantly at 5k rpm 6k?

🎉 It depends WHAT kind of Oil you use, Castrol EDGE 0W30 was the worst for my N13 engine, here its true what you say. After this, I tried * Mobil 1 0W30 and have NO consumption at all, went to Greece 5000 km within 2 Weeks with 0,2 Ltr. which i had to refill, but was not really necessary, since then ONLY MOBIL OIL.
🎉 Try differnt Oil, my 116i F20 with N13B16A Engine runs smoother with MOBIL OIL, you will notice straight away. Castrol Oil leaves residues behind, which is very bad for Turbocharger. Every engine type runs better with a specific Oil, needs to be tested. My experience stay away from Castrol for N13 engines.
@@Jokesxxl It has better response. In the past there were problems with the K&N oil especially with the VW Golf i can remember. But i have really no problems. It's quite affordable and in most cases better than the external airfilter, what results in losing 1 or 2 hp.

Als je wilt kan ik je de 9meest voorkomende gevallen voorleggen 🫢 ik heb er zelf 2gehad en ook nog 2 die op onderhoud komen alle 4 de zelfste 9problemen...MAAR rijd heerlijk en is daardoor niet een slechte auto maar wel 9dikke kinderziektes!
I just bought a 175k km 116i, it still has the original timingchain and there is some rattling on a cold start, but I think it’s the wastegate rattling. The car was a single owner car and with a great maintenance history. I did get a 1 year warranty from the dealer that will cover any possible engine fault if one arrives. That being said, I’ll need to look into it more and see if it’s the wastegate, heatshield or timing chain rattling.
@@fabdella66 It didn't burn any oil. As for the rattling noise, I changed the valve cover gasket (old was leaking), changed a new fuel pump relay, new intake for the turbo (old had a leak). Also had the timing chain inspected by a bmw mechanic, all up to spec. It's just not the most quiet engine I suppose, but I no longer have the car, got rid of it before any new problems arised.

It could be the VANOS valves and also the Oxygen sensors at the exhaust and the turbo. Change them is they are 5 years old.

Wastgate noise at cold start is gone and check engine light on but cold start sound was always there until check engine light appeared
Just delete the code. The sensor porbably triggered it. Also happened to me

It's tuned too rich. Black smoke is unburned petrol

Ik heb dat bij garage van asbroeck heylen laten doen. En de kosten voor de turbo zelf te laten ombouwen was +-€700. Maar da's zonder demontage en montage kosten
Turbopro in Utrecht (Nederland) doet het ook. Je moet ze wel bellen, want ze houden niet van mails😉. Ik spreek uit eigen ervaring, maar ze leveren wel goed werk. Kijk maar even op de website onder het menu Hybride Turbo's.

@@fabianvanzwieten6608 Zeker doen, al kun je stage 2 ook makkelijk met de standaard turbo doen. Dan heb je ook rond 240pk. Maar hybrid is net wat degelijker. Mooi moment voor revisie 👍

How reliable is the stage 2? I have had all your problems in mine, all solved. Always stage 1 and I beat the fuck out of my car. But only the problems u said nothing scary.

@@friedVHSS oil consumption and blue smoke means oil burning together with the gasoline, definitely valve seals and also a blown head gasket...time to swap engine.

Ze hebben dezelfde motor en tuning mogelijkheden.
@@bimmerbelgium2254 Zitten er ook geen verschillen in kleine onderdelen dan? Zoals o-ringen en rubbers? Want de uitlaat tussen 114i/116i en 118i is wel verschillend.

🎉 It depends WHAT kind of Oil you use, Castrol EDGE 0W30 was the worst for my N13 engine, here its true what you say. After this, I tried * Mobil 1 0W30 and have NO consumption at all, went to Greece 5000 km within 2 Weeks with 0,2 Ltr. which i had to refill, but was not really necessary, since then ONLY MOBIL OIL.
🎉 Try differnt Oil, my 116i F20 with N13B16A Engine runs smoother with MOBIL OIL, you will notice straight away. Castrol Oil leaves residues behind, which is very bad for Turbocharger. Every engine type runs better with a specific Oil, needs to be tested. My experience stay away from Castrol for N13 engines.

I have K&N filter, i replaced it for the standard paper filter . A must have before tuning. Bimmer Belgium has the Injen kit i think?

@@Outpost1977 do you notice any difference with the k&n? Someone told me the oil in the filter will kill the MAF.
@@Jokesxxl It has better response. In the past there were problems with the K&N oil especially with the VW Golf i can remember. But i have really no problems. It's quite affordable and in most cases better than the external airfilter, what results in losing 1 or 2 hp.

Jammer he die 4 cilinders van bmw zoveel problemen op jonge km stand heb mijn 116i n13 ketting laten vervangen op 97000 kms en die was al wat langer geworden en sinds mijn bezit elke 10dkms olie wissel jammer gewoon dit zou een auto leven moeten meegaan. Bij de dikke 6 cilinders is dit meestal het geval maar de 4 cilinders echt jammer

Als je wilt kan ik je de 9meest voorkomende gevallen voorleggen 🫢 ik heb er zelf 2gehad en ook nog 2 die op onderhoud komen alle 4 de zelfste 9problemen...MAAR rijd heerlijk en is daardoor niet een slechte auto maar wel 9dikke kinderziektes!
Ja de blokjes hebben veel onderhoud nodig haha

I just bought a 175k km 116i, it still has the original timingchain and there is some rattling on a cold start, but I think it’s the wastegate rattling.
The car was a single owner car and with a great maintenance history. I did get a 1 year warranty from the dealer that will cover any possible engine fault if one arrives.
That being said, I’ll need to look into it more and see if it’s the wastegate, heatshield or timing chain rattling.

@@fabdella66 It didn't burn any oil. As for the rattling noise, I changed the valve cover gasket (old was leaking), changed a new fuel pump relay, new intake for the turbo (old had a leak). Also had the timing chain inspected by a bmw mechanic, all up to spec. It's just not the most quiet engine I suppose, but I no longer have the car, got rid of it before any new problems arised.

Oui la base du n13 est la collaboration psa/bmw mais bmw à nettement àméliorer le moteur alors que psa n'a pas fait grand chose de son côté depuis les casses de distribution... d'ailleurs sur le moteur bmw tu as nettement moins de soucis que sur le moteur psa
@@damso7983 ils ont peut-être amélioré la distribution, mais cela ne signifie pas que le moteur utilisé par BMW est sans problèmes.
