I actually disagree with Questlove here. He’s just playing bad drums here. He managed the Dilla-groove on Voodoo but he’s not playing like Dilla here. Dilla didn’t sound like a drunk 3 year old. It feels like Questlove is too schooled. Dilla says himself that he was inspired by Stevie Wonder (and others) who were “sloppy” drummers (as in; they didn’t follow a metronome-steril-way of playing). If you listen to Welcome to Detroit (my fav Dilla album) the drums as super groovy, slowfunk-esque. It’s a bit like Earl Sweatshirts flow, just following the rhythm by feel. D’angelo himself said in an interview, something like “you just gotta make sure the first bar is on point, the rest you can groove with”

its all really nuance what remains the same is that Dilla went against the grain in time before sound cloud rappers and digital mix tapes. he took the chance and ran with something different i think quest saying drunken 3 year old is just his take on it (as a refined and formally educated musician) not that its wrong or right just how it felt to him

"it feels like Questlove is too schooled" - the way I would say this is Quest worked so hard to sound like a drum machine, and loved legitimately surprising people with an 'oh damn that's a real drummer in The Roots'. And here he is saying later in life hearing J Dilla played a big role in his journey embracing how sometimes being loose is exciting.

@@alexfisher4009 i get it. My whole point is that it’s a bad take. He could’ve talked about Dilla and finding the “pocket” or something instead of this. I don’t really get why soundcloud rappers have anything to do with this though. Not being arrogant i just don’t understand what you mean.
(Just for the record: Questlove is a legend! i’m a fan of The roots and Voodoo is one of my favorite albums)
