  • Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. I have kinda become obsessed with Swirling. Here are two bodies that I am trying to get the purple orange and yellow right from are you experienced. Not what I wanted but will continue to keep trying. I am using Testors here.

    Too much of one color at once: put in a little and then observe its relation within the spectrum of the whole before adding anymore

    2:54 ARG! stop! You mix too much and you get mud! hahaha Your mix directions have no rhyme or reason and it's all colliding in the middle with no angular momentum in any directions. Try smooth arcs and only a few angles. I have never done this but I know too much random collision isn't going to make the paint happy.

    I'm no expert by any means but it seems like your rushing and not being very patient with creating your patterns. And adding to much paint at once. Some of the homemade videos that I've seen. They tend to spend a lot more time creating their swirl pattern first. And are a bit conservative with how much paint they drop in. And they dip in a zig zag pattern slowly. But keep at it. Best way to learn is by doing.

    I was wondering if you put the body in before the paint and pulled it up through the paint? Just an idea I don't know anything about it, just a thought that crossed my mind.

    Stop swirling your paint as you put it in, just make 2 puddles of paint and stack them, over and over 4 x at least, then slowly mix them with a stick, going fast will cause it to get bubbles

I'm sure it's really tough for them it look I'm just trying to give you a little help For Better or For Worse on my end I guess just trying to be helpful maybe check out some other people's videos they really do let it set a lot longer

    hey man from every other video that I've seen people doing this they've put a little bit and let it sit for a minute then Dad another little bit and let it sit for a minute then maybe dad a couple of colors off to the side let them sit for him and then when they get their desired set of colors they take one single stick and keeps wearing them colors together with the stick they're not making this world with the paint they're using the stick to create this world man and it's very easy from what they do and how they make it seem it seems to be a swift stroke from the stick that is creating the swirls

    You should use squirt bottles not just pouring to get a more constant and thinner spread of the paint it will help give you more defined swirls.

    It looks like you're a bit too quick with your hand when you swirl the paint in the bucket causing your colors to blend instead of swirling. Don't throw the paint across the water with the stock and the colors will come out better.

    all about how you drop the paint in the water from my layman's perspective. I think you should have taken your time more and used a dropper... also very delicate swirling makes for more color distinction. Again though, I've never done this before, so not too shabby m8

    Some 5 cent pipettes will really make your life easier....take your time and go slow when you drop the colour and when you draw the mixing stick across the paint..then watch the way the paint sits on the water as you mix it and wait until you get the pattern you want before you dip...some patience goes a long way....thanks for the vids.

    You have some very helpful hints here in the comment section. Your color choice was a homerun. Now take your time, little color at a time, Mix gently, and not so much paint. I made all of these mistakes my first few times. Just trying to save the next guy from making my mistakes. Not trying to be a know it all.

  • @fakiirification
    @fakiirification 6 лет назад

    when you stir it, you are moving too fast. it thins the tendrils of color too much and leads to a muddy look. move slow when "stirring" the paint, maybe look up some paper marbling videos to watch how they do it. its a deliberate thing, not a random mix... or to say it better, its a deliberate process to define a random pattern.

  • @DwightMS1
    @DwightMS1 8 лет назад

    I think your problem results from pouring each color in one puddle instead of zing-zagging it all over. Watch other people do it on You Tube.

  • @grangerousdesigns4678
    @grangerousdesigns4678 6 лет назад

    Your adding too much at a time and you are trying to make circles and designs as you add.The design forms after all of the colors have been added.You should slowly stir then watch for the pattern you want.

    I love how, in the 2nd guitar paint mixing, the paints look like they're smoldering while you're pouring them in. If you could get that effect onto a guitar it would look amazing.

  • @doughurley6388
    @doughurley6388 7 лет назад

    If you clean your bucket after each dip the paint would not stick to the walls and you would not have to move the paint so much, then you would get a better swirl affect, peace

    You're swirling wayyyy too fast. Also, don't dump all your paint in one place. Watch the relations and reactions you get with each color so they don't blend.

    The biggest problem I saw with the last is where you chose to dip. There were some beautiful patterns around the outer areas but you dipped right in the middle where it was mushy. Just remember what you see on the water is what will be on the guitar. Go after the best parts.

    It looks to me like you're breaking the surface tension with your swirling stick causing the paints to blend rather than swirl, try putting the stick in less aggressively and swirl gently without removing the stick 'til you're done swirling. Remember what you are trying to achieve is a floating transfer of paint to the body so whatever pattern you have on the water is what will transfer to the body. Gently does it is the key here I believe.
    I also don't think that thinning the paint is helping you at all here, as you need the paint to float and not mix into the water/borax solution

      +shaun young
      Test on scrap. buy some boards and prime them.
      use the pipettes to get the paint on the water vs. pouring it out. Makes a huge difference. need to be as close to the water as possible.
      Use less paint than you think... Less is more.
      Post a vid!

    • @hippiekarl7
      @hippiekarl7 8 лет назад

      +shaun young Borax can be found next to the powdered clothes-washing detergent in groceries, Wally-World, etc. Borax and the water temp serve to float your paint. I'm using Testor's enamel (a.k.a. 'model paint'). Hope that helps!
