I've been trying for almost a year, please what base paint should I use to make the swirl stick to the guitar? thank you very much

Love the swirl but I do have a question. It took almost 4 minutes to put 9 rings of paint and another minute and a half to stir. I’ve done a number of these with water and ambient temperature at 70-80 degrees and every time they skim at 2 1/2 - 3 minutes. So how have you achieved this long work time? This is an interesting art form and looks great on guitars but it is frustrating. I’ve sanded the same guitar down six times to try and get the look and results I like. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. J
The Tank size matter too, but you should try the water closer to the 76-80 degrees fahrenheit. Also make sure there is no wind. Are you using the Magic Marble paints or something else? I went thru so much sandpaper when i started until i realized to use something that i can throw away i used some wood i would primer it then test to get it down. Good Luck and Hopes this helps. I have a video if you click on my Playlist its the "Swirl Fail" I take these steps 1) Pop the top off the paint and stir it well and also shake it 2) Make sure no fans or windows get any kind of breeze over the water. (No Movement) 3) Water temperature I like a range from 76-78 degrees 4) Fresh water I had done like 3 swirls then on the 4th one I couldn't as it just filmed up. Noe I change the water more often. I think that's everything and Good Luck
So I tried this yesterday and it didn’t work at all. The paint started to clump up on the surface, did not make the nice circle like this video but made stringy rings, seemed like the paint was hardening or drying immediately on water contact. Is there a temperature and other things that need to be prepped in the water first?
I had the same issue, and then I purchased something called "easy marble" by a company called Marabu. You don't need to treat the water with anything, it doesn't matter the temperature, etc. Fantastic product. You can find it on Amazon or at local art stores.
lapinus the only problem with that is when you dip the guitar it ends up with huge areas of a single color, which still looks good but not what I was going for. Thanks for watching
The paint that I use Magic Marble is 1 ounce USA, I would suggest for 3 color paint job 1 bottle of each color, it is always better to have to much paint then not enough. If you are painting the neck and headstock then I would get 2 bottles of each color. This also helps if you don't like the way it turns out you can sand it back down and prime it and have the extra paint.
I just sand and primer it usually white but then it depends on what colors i am using. Also try to plug all the small screw holes reason for this is it sometimes creates bubbles which in turn screw up the paint on the body

Hi, nice finish. How do you get the paint to spread so nicely? Do you have to use thinners? I prepared a bucket with 1,5 tablespoons per gallon of borax in the water but the paints acted quite weirdly. Some of the paint did not spread out at all (revell email paints) like there was still too much surface tension and some of the paint actually sank to the bottom of the bucket like there was not enough surface tension to hold it up. I did not use any thinners though..

Grandad Certified I probably use about 10-15 ml. They come in 1 ounce bottles which converts to almost 30 ml. Of course you can increase or decrease if you want more or less of a color. When I first started doing these I didn’t use enough and the area towards the neck would be faded. Now I always make sure I have more than enough to get it covered. Hopes this helps. Yes Thank a lot man, definitely helps, I did some test on pieces of wood and it would fade towards the top which is why I wanted to get an amount. Also do you keep the temperature at a certain degree I played around with that and it seems like the paint would get pretty dense and wouldnt always spread out when dropping one color into the next.

I keep my water temperature around 76 degrees. It took me a long time to get everything right but this should get you close. I also found that if a ceiling fan or wind gets to the container your dipping with will also screw it up. I close all windows and turn my fans off.

Paint pattern mixed too much? I've never seen one of these videos were the painter didn't stir the paint colors together too much. Instead of a cool pattern you just get a bunch of visual noise. If he had dipped it at 3:50 it would have looked great.

Well, I was wrong about the water temperature part. Warm water is still ideal.
Nice finish, but I think that you could've swirl the oil less, so that the circles would've been bigger.

Look at the finished guitar as its Red,, White and Blue. Lighting makes the blue look black in the water

You have to thin the paint with mineral spirits

I just do a quick shake but i've not used air to blow it off, i usually hang mine and let the sun dry them.
