  • TMNT on the NES is often considered one of the hardest and worst games on the system, but is it really? Hard games are praised now a days for being so rare. Are sure this game is bad and not just hard? Are we remembering out childhoods correctly? Is this game really as bad as the internet makes it out to be? It defiantly has its problems, but lets see if this game's bark is really as bad as it's bite.

    Had TMNT 2 The Arcade Game been released first, we'd have never gotten this game and only gotten beat-em-ups.
    NES' strength was that there was a plethora of games and new ideas.
    TMNT needs to be remastered as an action adventure with beat em up elements.

    • @InfiniteComboReviews
      @InfiniteComboReviews  Год назад

      True, but I feel like more gamers would have been okay with just getting the beat'em ups. I think a remaster would be cool. If nothing else, the enhancements on the Cowabunga Collection that fixes the slowdown and flickering is nice. Also, if you are looking for a side scrolling TMNT game with some Action Adventure elements, look into TMNT on the GBA based on the 2004 series.

    This was the one of 3 cartridges I got with my first console, that being NES. 2 cartridges contained Lode Runner, Battle City, Nut's n' Milk, Popeye, Duck Hunt e.t.c. TMNT 1 felt like a proper story game after them. Yes was not easy, but it never felt extreme hard. I slowly progressed at the levels learning dead ends and places where I could "farm" pizza slices to replenish health or shurikens/boomerangs/energy scrolls. I learned the game world and it was great. So this eventually led me all the way inside technodrome and there the hell started. No more farming, enemies hit like a truck and moved on jetpacks, shooting in all directions. I had aboutdozen of attempts before I quit trying.
    And then my friend had completed the game, because his cartridge had level selection option via pressing select button on title screen. I wish they did it for initial release. On the other hand I begun liking challenges after this game, and for this I am grateful.
    To dodge this enemy you have to reset room into fire guys, then climb by left half of the ladder and on the second floor there would be a fire guy instead that is easier to dodge and kill. ruclips.net/video/B6cPTDAQwRU/видео.html To reset enemies group kill the last one of them on screen, or reenter level, but keep at least one enemy from the desired group alive on screen as you walks scrolling it.
    Some jumps very only possible on precise timing of short taps or jump button or much easier if you had turbo A button on gamepad.
    Besides this game was never near absurd difficulty of Battletoads.

    • @InfiniteComboReviews
      @InfiniteComboReviews  3 года назад

      TMNT 3 was my first console game and I ended up getting 2, then 1 last. Since it was hard and not co-op, I didn't play it much as a kid. Trying to beat if for this review (and an older review ways back) I learned how to farm the pizza and stuff like that too, though it was that cheap final hall before Shredder that did me in. Had to watch a guide on how to get through it, which was sad considering how easy Shredder was. I can appreciate the challenge of the game, but I think if it had been a bit more balanced and fair, it would be more fondly remembered.

    I've only beaten this game once and it took a while and honestly unlike other difficult NES games I didn't feel like I accomplished much. There's too much poor gameplay balancing and issues that really detract from it, it's not like beating Castlevania or Ghost 'N Goblins where the challenge was tough but still fair. The last time I replayed it I just brute forced my way through with save states.

      See, I'm sorta in the middle there, because the parts that make it difficult are the parts that are poorly made. For example, there is a mechanic where you automatically step over small gaps. However, I lost all 4 turtles at a section where you have to fall through those exact gaps or its instata death, and its timed, so you have to fight with the games mechanics to make it through. I pretty much had to cheese my way though this to even stand a chance.

    This game might have benefited from keeping the player in the center of the screen at all times, or even a modern widescreen format. It would alleviate some of the “cheap hits” without changing the game design too much. But then again, the test of reflexes was a huge part of the game and you wouldn’t want to lose what makes playing it satisfying to master. The other thing is just not having limited continues and letting people restart as many times as they like. As long as you farm scrolls and pizzas as needed, it’s really not that difficult of a game. It’s very addicting in the most classic sense of the word, where the excitement you get is in overcoming obstacles and getting through them more efficiently with repeated playthroughs, and every time you lose you feel like you were so close and just want to turn around and try again.
    There really should be a TMNT Konami Collection or two. This game would benefit massively from some quality of life features like some autosave points, and then maybe it wouldn’t be a game that is only recommended to people who are into retro games. Do all the NES, Gameboy, and Arcade games in collection 1 and all the SNES and Genesis games in collection 2, sprinkle in instruction manuals, box art, and other extras. If the effort was put into it you’d have a success and the games would at least be preserved for a while longer

    • @InfiniteComboReviews
      @InfiniteComboReviews  3 года назад +1

      I do think centering the turtles in the camera would have helped. After all, it's not really reaction speed if you can't even see the enemy coming. Also, I certainly get where you're coming from with the challenge and getting just a bit further each time, but i feel like cheap deaths do undermine that experience. Also the Genesis and SNES only have 4 games between them. The collections would be lopsided.

    • @bradenhogan2
      @bradenhogan2 3 года назад +1

      InfiniteComboReviews the logic of that being that the 4 games on the SNES/Genesis are probably more popular and sought after than all the games in the other one. I don’t think the GB games do much to shift the odds in the favor of the collection they’re in, that’s more of a bonus than anything. You could put the 2 arcade games on collection 2 but then you’d probably say it’s heavily lopsided in favor of the second collection. Of course, the alternative would be one single collection but that’s a lot of games for one collection, and you’ve still got to deal with licensing and the music and everything. I’m well aware all of this is meaningless bc it’s not likely to happen but we’ve seen collections done very well before, we know it’s technically feasible and we know they do well enough to get made, at least when the properties are owned by the publisher

    • @InfiniteComboReviews
      @InfiniteComboReviews  3 года назад +1

      Yeah. Honestly, the arcade games make the idea of two collections sloppy unless you split them up between them, which would make sense actually. The arcade game and TMNT 2 in one set and both Turtles in Time in the other. They could even make an HD collection for the 2003 turtle games if they wanted too, but ugh. Licensing is the worst! Once with a game, always with a game. That's how it should be, but blah. Just play TMNT Rescue Palooza. That'll make you feel better.

You will be able to beat the technodrome Boss with Strategy, but inside? You got any scrolls, no? FU. Come back with some scrolls boyo. Tedious. Inside Technodrome level is manageable, but you basically arrive at very low hp (about 2 - 4 bars on each turtle) at the last corridor before door to Shredder boss room. As a kid I always thought this area was impossible without 2 turtles with 99 scrolls stacks, but the fact was that enemies with jetpacks took 2 scrolls hits and they often managed to make a shot that I couldn't dodge in a narrow corridor, that eventually depleted my HP faster than my scrolls.
      If only I knew that boomerang and screen edge trick, that I found out 15 years later while playing on emulator. Upon receiving hit Jetpack enemy backs a little and if he does go behind the screen edge, he vanishes all together. I even killed Shredder with boomerangs only (that you can find infinite number of in night level).

      But didn't Japan have an easier version of Streets of Rage and Rocket Knight than America?
      Don't think people today are lazy, just if something is annoying and will ultimately amount to nothing...then what's the point in playing? It's pointless if it ain't fun lol

    Is it strange that I passed this game on my first try yesterday a really good game in my opinion

      Nice work! It's a bit strange since the final areas of the game usually take a few tries to get through. You must just be a really skilled player.

      @@kakarotyung7056 Thanks! The Completionist huh? I know who that is, but I've never actually watched any of his content. Guess I'll need to change that.

      @@kakarotyung7056 Lol. I hear that a lot, but its been a super slow burn. Been at this for years now, though the early stuff is garbage.

    This was one of the first games I ever played in the first console I ever owned (bought it at a flea market before I got a Playstation), and spend countless hours trying to beat it up before I gave up. Manage to beat the water level to get to the 3rd level before my lives ran out. I'm surprised I made it that far since I really didn't like hard games, and honestly don't think I would had fare better with other "good" hard games like Megaman or Ninja Gaiden, but considering how much I tolerate TMNT and trying to win over and over again maybe I would fare better.

      That's interesting. TMNT 3 on the NES was my first game on the system, so when I ended up getting this one I pretty much ignored it because it was only single playered. I never could have beat TMNT as a kid, and I don't have the patience to do it now, but I did beat it a few years ago (Shredder is the easiest part of the game). Also, I feel like Megaman is easier because it feels more fair. Ninja Gaiden is brutal though.

    I wish this game got the redaction treatment that Simon's quest got.
    Leo and Mikey having equal power to Don if not more and Raph being the strongest to compensate for his short reach
