I've always enjoyed this game even as a kid. Finding bugs and ways to break the game was always so much fun. The only thing I hate about this turtles games is the 1 out of 4 chance of finding the Technodrome. Great review most definitely a misunderstood game. I can understand if people hate this game or love it.

It's so good to see a comment from you! I agree, the Technodrome hunt is aweful. It took me a long time to find it while I was capturing footage. I also understand if people don't like it. It's not made for everyone, that's for sure

While the game looked good it wasn't designed to be challenging, it was designed to be cheap in order to artificially extend people's play time.

I always just skipped this one and played the arcade port on NES, but I will definitely give it a fair try in the Cowabunga Collection.

The arcade port is really fun! I have a ton of great memories playing it. This one is a tough game, but not impossible. Let me know what you think about it

I remember the night map with helicopters and nothing after that
I think it's time to play it again with some cheats 😏
Still TMNT 2003 game on GameCube is my favorite one (big fan of the 2003 anime launch)
TMNT 2 and 3 also was good

It's not misunderstood, the programing is bad so is the hit detection, enemies are weird, it sucked. People who played the NES TMNT games probably played this the least.

    • @NeanderMeander

I get what you're saying. I'll admit that I thought this was a really bad game. But, after giving it another look recently, it's really not as bad as I had always thought. It's way too difficult for the average player. That's where they went wrong with it. There's noway a normal person is going to sit down and get good at something as hard as this game. I used to use the Game Genie to play it as a kid. Without that, there's noway I would have gotten very far.

TMNT was a great game for the NES at the time. Unlike today where there are tons of free to play and crazy inexpensive games just a click or tap away, games back then were expensive (especially when adjusted for inflation) and few people had a large collection, with trading/borrowing from friends and rentals being the best ways to experience a variety of games as your own collection was likely limited.
This made the fact that games were hard and took a long time to master almost a feature rather than a problem. If it took months to finally get good enough at a game to beat it that was excellent as you may only get one or two a year. Getting a game that you could beat in an hour or two having never played it before was devastating.
Games like this fit that time perfectly for me. Each bit of progress felt well earned. Working together with friends to come up with new ideas and new strategies was always a blast. When Nintendo Power or another game magazine would let a tip drop that got you past a seemingly impossible section wasn't like pulling up a modern walk-thru it was more of a gift from the cosmos. Likewise, when you breezed through a section that other wrote in saying was impossible it gave you a feeling of perhaps not being the worst gamer out there, so it balanced out.
I remember when we got to the "you can just walk across point" my friend and I solved that one at the same time. He showed me you could just walk across, and I showed him that if you made the perfect jump you didn't have to fight your way through the room in the first place.
My friend group never found the underwater section particularly hard; sure, we spent a little time figuring out each of the mechanics but once we had found the trick to each trap the level became kind of a breather section, the timer meant we had to keep moving so it was probably the only section we didn't lose a turtle because we were goofing off and trying something stupid on most runs.
This was definitely a gem in my collection.

What's funny is I spent so time with this game OUTSIDE my NES that I was most frustrated that the label and cover art they all had red masks 😂 Although I never made it to the giant Mouser either. I remember the water level being most brutal for me when I was young. As soon as Turtles II came out I never looked back. Love the Zelda II comparison too, spot on!

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад +1

Turtles 2 is really good! I remember playing it like crazy on the arcade. I remember noticing that they all had red masks too. I always thought it was weird. But I think their all wore red in the comics. Though I could be wrong. Did you know that you always wear a red mask when you fight Shredder no matter what turtle you are? That water level is still brutal. It took me a few tries to get through it for the video. I’ll probably give it another 20 years before I play it again.

I actually just use Game Genie on this, as yeah, its difficult, but that's how I enjoy it. For persons that actually go thru the game, good on them, and I think the rewind feature is a good thing. And I still consider it finishing the game. As always this is a wonderful video, I love your very well thought out and well spoken conversational method in your videos. Hope you are doing well otherwise Neander, and btw, yay NT Mini Noir! Actually I'm playing mine a LOT! I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of it. I've actually canceled my Switch/Microsoft/Sony subscriptions as I'm just not interested in new stuff at this time, seeing you post this made my day! Thank you. Til the next. 🖖🎮😊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Marcus

Thanks for watching Marcus! I remember using the Game Genie to play this game when I was really young. There would have been no way for me to progress without it. I also think the rewind feature is a good thing. I used it for parts of footage I captured for the video. It does make progressing through the game way more tolerable.
I'm a huge fan of the NT Mini Noir! I use it quite often for more than just my NES and Famicom cartridges. I'm sure you know all about it's potential. I really like playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on it.
I think it's great that you aren't focusing on new games. I've also stepped back and started playing way more NES games. There's so much I have yet to play that I probably should have jumped on earlier.
Thanks again for watching and commenting. It's always good to hear from you!

Eventually I want to try and tackle an NES game. I'm 23 so I don't have the nostalgia or experience that makes the clunkiness of that era enjoyable to me. Exceptions being smb1 and smb3
More and more videos like this are popping up and making these old games accessible to people like me. Namely the "Debunking the Difficulty" series the Ryu does.
I love how this video goes over the most important challeneges you'll face with solutions. Also general tips on what items and characters are important. Since these old games aren't very story driven, spoilers aren't really a thing to worry about. The main story is your own journey through the challenges it gives you.
Again wonderful video! You are criminally underrated!!!! (I will keep saying this until you get proper recognition)

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад

NES games are definitely something you need to mentally prepare for. Some of them weren't designed to be fair or reviewed like modern games are. They were made to be difficult and make you get good. Back when they were made, people didn't buy many games, so they had to provide game sessions that took time and that you could replay many times over. I think that side of them has been lost by modern game reviewers. Yes, they are cheap, unfair, and difficult. But that is what they were meant to be.
If I were to be jumping into NES games right now, I would go into it with an open mind and see what they offer. There are so many great games on the system. If you can find collections with the rewind feature, that's how I would go about it. NSO is a great place to start.
Thank you again for coming back. I really appreciate the extremely kind words.

Yes, Displaced Gamers had a three-part feature about this game and why some of its mechanics were buggy, in particular for the swimming level. It's even worse in the PAL release that was retitled Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles since it was never optimized for that market.

TMNT on NES isn't bad, the controls are just a slightly floatier version of Konami's earlier Getsu Fuhma Den and the overall gameplay is actually a well fleshed out adventure game.
It's not the Arcade game, but similar to the NES version of Strider the game is a separate beast divorced from the Arcade game and is quite decent in its own right.

If this game is too difficult explain why i up until technodrome as a 10 year old. My buddy showed me the water level and I picked it up in two tries and remember the route 34 years later. Raph is so underated. He is the second strongest and the sais only look short. The hit box is actually wider (they could have given him different graphics. For example Mike cannot reach as far up as raph and his nunchucks are weaker towards most enemies but he ist darn fast. Just today I read a hit piece on this game on a magazine by some editor who supposedly had "played this game the most" but he didn't even know some those dead end stages is where they keep the captured Turtles. He praised the opening animation but didn't even seem to know about the other intermission animations.

I'll take it to my grave that this game is difficult, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. I believe I said that in the video. I love it and will continue to love it. Also, I don't know how I would explain any occurrence in your life. I wasn't there. I can't even verify if what you're saying it true because I don't know you. Why you ask me to explain that to you?
