I believe that you absolutely nailed it when describing what went down between cole and rhanerya. That she threw herself at him to be shot down and then he when realizing he would lose her forever threw himself back her to only be shot down. It perfectly expresses why he so solidly ensconced himself onto the side of the greens. The self loathing the whole "you hurt me I'm going to hurt worst" mentality of someone not able to think straight because of their own hearts desires not being meet. I have been Cole in my own life experiences when scorned by the person I thought I would love til death. Its exactly what George trys to invoke with the way he writes. So you can find your self in his character's. ANOTHER GREAT BREAK DOWN!
Thanks for the extra perspective! It kind of came together as I was talking, and yeah George often writes about the same thing with different characters, it gives the work unity

The daughter of the dead eldest son with a legitimate child (female), who was surpassed by the legitimate son of the younger son of the King, in this case, Edward of Kent and Ernst of Cumberland.

I think that they changed Vaemon to Corlys's brother is a real good sign that the show runners are thinking things through and not just handwaving stuff. It gives me more confidence in the show than anything else I've heard about it thus far. Granted, I could be misreading their intentions, but it reminds me of how for the Lord of the Rings films, they made sure to have Sam grab Frodo's hand after he wakes up in Rivendale. I'd like to think that it's a similar case of attention to detail being representative of care for the source material that D&D were definitely lacking. Great pre-show coverage as always! I can't tell you how excited I am that you're thinking about doing a Dark stream, even if it has to share time with other shows. Dark is probably my favorite show of all time. I'm currently rewatching it for the 5th or 6th time and am still picking up on things I never noticed in earlier viewings. I'm sure you have some great observations from the show that I can't wait to hear

@@DavidLightbringer If you happen to do a rewatch before the stream, I'd be interested in whether you think the song Enter One by Sol Seppy (used in season 1) would have been a better song to use in place of What a Wonderful World. The editing would need to be a little different for it to fit properly, but in addition to the lyrics very closely fitting what is litterally happening on the screen, I think the melancholy yet hopeful feel of the song fit what they were going for in the ending more.

Margaret Beaufort conceived Henry VII around that time and everyone was like "This is way too early for having a child". Considering that Martin goes for realistic medieval/early Renaissance standards in asoiaf, the match was most certainly for political purposes only, at least for some years.

Thinking of what you say about comparing asoiaf politics with real life politics, what can´t help to think of Viserys was a mediocre king and head of house, but he also was dealing with crappy hand as you stated and Hightower way too ambitious for his own good and that of the realm.
Dragons in this world are akin to nukes, in the sense that the are kind of an equalizer and detriments, its what allowed the targs to be left alone by the rest of Westeros after the Doom, and what made their absolute rule in the earl years possible. they could enforce it. It is also what allowed them to carry on their marriage practices, the marry into their own family to keep the blood of the dragon, and to keep their claims inside their own family (That is how the Habsburg became the biggest dynasty , at one point, they married their cousins), they can afford not having alliances with the rest of the 7 kingdoms because they have dragons. The problems is that by integrating so much with the Velaryons the gave them access to both dragons and claims to the thrones.
What Jachaerys and the Great Council did was postpone conflict and buy time for a better solution to the situation. Viserys and his Small Council attempts to solve the problems actually made sense. By marrying Rhaenyra to Laenor they are essentially uniting the 2 claims from both lines, and also taking control . Except both claims are uniting under the wrong family from the targs perspective and thanks to the Hightowers influence they began to antagonize the valeryons once more. Daemon marriage to Laena was actually a move that Viserys should of taken first, when he was offered the choice to unite the claims under the targ name and gaining an dragon rider.
Viserys not summoning another great council and the Green refusing his will and essentially attacking the Blacks is what caused the Dance, the equivalent of nuclear war in westeros. What happened under Viserys is the equivalent of a Great Power giving anothe country nuke capabilities, and then start harranssing and attacking.
In Asoiaf when there is war the victims tend to be the childrens of the combatants, and in the end both sides lost a great deal. The Targs managed to keep the claim inside their families but at the expense of their dragons, making them vulnerable to balance of power within the 7k, and eventually having to marry outside their house to keep ruling, until they couldn't.

I could actually see Rhaenyra be rejected by Cole and sleep with Breakbones the very same night. If she had a husband who didn't desire her and was rejected be a man she had feelings for she might wonder why nobody wanted her and try to seduce the next man she met to prove th herself: "See there is nothing wrong with me, there are men who want me."
I personally would find it the most interesting if the true version was a mixture of both stories: Rhaenyra tried to seduce Cristan Cole and he was ready to accept under the condition that they get married. When Rhaenyra refused he said like Daemon Sand: "If I am not worthy of your hand I am not worthy of other body parts either." If this happened they would both feel rejected and frustrated and both reactions make sense. It does seem that the romance between Breakbones and Rhaenyra started at the same time which seems odd if the story that Cole took initiative is true. If she was rejected she might have started the affair for her self-esteem. On the other hand if Rhaenyra took initiative Cole's reaction seems really strong. If, however, he had feelings for Rhaenyra thought for a brief moment she felt the same and then discovered she didn't want him enough to share her life with him his reaction makes more sense, especially if he heard she invited another man into her bed not long afterwards, possibly by Rhaenyra who might have been petty enough to tell him she had found a man who was perfectly happy with what she had to offer.
Besides it would fit George's concept of the unreliable narrator if both accounts contained true and false parts.
That’s solid logic, there are always to make a sensational story plausible, it’s all in the unfolding. I suspect there was a already a seed planted (the seed is strong, lol) with the Rhaenyra / Harwin thing. Maybe she knew he liked her and could turn to him

I'm thinking that the queen might have encouraged Ser Cole of the kingsguard to act upon his feeling for Rhaenera, as it is a chance to remove the princess from the right of succesion without bloodshed.
Since dragons sync their mood etc with their rider, do they sync their sex as well? I.e. is that the time dragons change sex?
That’s an interesting idea but honestly we don’t really know that they change gender. It’s just hard for them to tell male and female except that some lay eggs

There are allusions to Mulan (Re: Alisa Patience’s channel). Unlike Disney’s version (??Extra Credit’s ???channel, I think I saw Mulan’s different versions explanations there) Mulan isn’t revealed to her men, but reveals herself after returning home. The explanation is her men “only saw what they expected to see” and never thought to question it; which is of course Varys whole deal. So all the perfume clues are her just wearing perfume and so on.
There is another allusion to Marvel’s Spider-man: specifically “the death of Gwen Stacy” . This foreshadows Cercei/Gwen’s falling death, as well Jaime\Spider-man swinging out to save her and failing, Green Goblin’s/Tyrion’s bombs that explodes the tower Cercei jumps from in response to the final burning of Kingslanding (not next book, that’s a partial fake out). Anyway, “the spider” Varys with her “spiders” children combined with Spider-man might be Lady Varys is Jaime’s (and Cercei’s mother, not Tyrion’s though). Though I suspect Varys is a Spicer girl and actually Tyrion’s mother; but not sure.
There’s also a bunch of Medea allusions from Greek myth, so Varys might be a Dowager queen like Rhaella (saved by Arthur similar to Arthurian legend “Tristian and ?Isolde?”) or Elia again spared by Arthur, who was ordered to kill Aerys’ “false” heirs by Aerys.

Dark was good, but it would've been nice to get more detail on exactly how the past/future networks were tied in. Never understood the priests motivations or how old man protagonist built a giant underground secret society with basically a nuclear powered device. It would've been nice to spend half a season on how the time hopping hero managed a large scale, secret cult to rival illumanti
Totally agree with those critiques. Season 3 felt rushed compared to the first 2 - I’ve always wondered if Netflix was to blame there, they cancel so many of their shows and put pressure on them to finish more quickly

It happens often in the show, Aegon V is the Mad King's father instead of his grandfather. Members of House Tyrell and Martell are missing, and a King Maegor III (and by extension Maegor II) exist in the show canon. It's possible Aegon the Conqueror has a Targaryen mother in show canon instead of Valeryian.
41:00 Also under normal Westerosi law a lords daughter inherits before his brother. Visenya and Rhaena's situations are different from Rhaenys Valaeryans. They where the kings sisters, while Rhaenys was the Crown Prince's daughter. Aemon's line comes before Baelon's line in normal Westoros inheritance laws. For example, Rickon Stark is ahead of Sansa Stark in inheritance. However, Sansa and Arya would be ahead of Benjen. And Cersei is ahead of Kevan.
So I did think about that - that all Velaryons are black, and they change history so that they haven’t married into the royal line of Targaryen... but this would significantly undercut the politics of passing over Rhanys, Laenor, and Laena. The insult to Velaryon is felt because they’ve married into the Targaryen royal line so many times. Hence I think the Summer Islander mother or something like that makes more sense. But we’ll see what they do, they’re working with George so I’m sure it will make sense

I hope that is correct re: issue with history. Although Vaemond was his nephew, not cousin, fyi 👌My concern to that is the funeral images from behind the scenes show the opposite. What would be an all dark-skinned House V. Large number. Which is awesome, except that it does remove credibility and continuity. Because unless they intermarried, no family could stay looking exactly the same. Only Targaryen’s, due to the obvious need to control the dragons. And you are right…. if the story sets the standard of what a dark-skinned and traditional Targ child looks like…. They’d be light brownish. Aegon and his sisters were straight out of Valyria. Lol.. So if your idea is right, this makes sense to keep lore. But seems all his cousins and old woman or two, at the funeral scenes, are all silver and dark-skinned. And that would make Silent 5 also dark-skinned which is cool I think, but that would change your theory. 🤷🏼♀️
Maybe that’s Corlys’s mom, the old woman! That would make sense - they will probably want to explain whatever backstory they come up with. If they make the Velaryons darker skinned going back more generations than that, then they’ll have to change other cannon; like perhaps the Velaryon never married into Targaryen in this version. That would undercut the slights to their house leading up to the Dance though, which would hurt the story. So yeah it seems like it would need to be Corlys’s mom.
We also know there’s a brother, Vaemond, so there could be other brothers and sisters or children of Vaemond

And now I'm convinced the reason he spurned Rhaenyra is because she totally disrespected the high and mighty ideals of knighthood and his position as a white sword. If even the realm's delight can't respect the vows of knighthood who else will and that he was also mortified because she thought he'd agree to violate those ideals.
