    Much needed. Have made the mistake of downloading the "free" plugins that come with hardware and then realizing that by "free" they mean "not free."

    Doesn't NI's Komplete Kontrol only look for VSTs?

    Hello Chris,
    Can I ask you what resolution you use on your 2 monitors that appear in this video?
    Thank you very much for this very useful video and greetings from Spain.

    I don't recommend getting rid of VSTs. I tried this late last year cleaning out all of the VST, VST3, DigiDesign and AAX versions of plugins... and while it freed up space, it totally screwed up at least 75% of all of my plugins, mostly Native Instruments, UA, Waves and SoundToys. The problem is that a lot of companies just write an AU wrapper around their VST plugins for Logic compatibility, and when you delete the VST the wrapper obviously does nothing.

  • @Mibrilane
    @Mibrilane 5 месяцев назад +3

    Always be careful deleting VST versions, some AU plugins require the VST to be installed to work, for example Korg's original Legacy Collection plugins (M1, MonoPoly, Polysix, Wavestation, MDE-X, and LegacyCell) which still have this quirk in the current AS versions even though their newer plugins do not.

      Lesson learned. My Korg plugin stopped working when I removed VST...Time machine to the rescue.

    Great advice! What are the HAL/MAS/CLAP/ARA folders for?

    • @Mibrilane
      @Mibrilane 5 месяцев назад +4

      HAL = Hardware Abstraction Layer, these are usually hardware driver plugins.
      MAS = MOTU Audio System, plugins used by MOTU Digital Performer.
      CLAP = CLever Audio Plugin, open source format currently supported by Bitwig and Reaper (possibly others).
      ARA = Audio Random Access, kind of an audio processing plugin format, used by Melodyne and other "hey I'd like to share the audio data" applications.

    Thank you! There are some plugins (components) from non-developers and when I drag them in, Logic tells me it won't open it because it's not safe. So the plugin will never work. Do you know how to deal with this?

    Hi, great video. I have a problem btw. Every time I restart/ open logic it always scan all my plugins. Is there a fix for this? Can it be that some plugins are in different libraries? Br

    Is there a clean-ish way to ensure all plug-ins installed on two Macs are identical short of Time Machine restore as an example? I have 2 Macs I bounce between and occasionally I'll find that one is missing. Sucks.

    • @jfbmusic
      @jfbmusic 3 месяца назад +1

      Hi there, are the 2 Mac in the same physical location?
      Short of running the installers on both Macs (you can copy over your network if they're in the same place), it can hard to make them exactly the same because all of the little extra bits that are installed on your system for each plugin…as you saw at the end of Chris' video.
      And yeah, it sucks when a plug is missing from one machine…

    • @Slamminbassplayer
      @Slamminbassplayer 3 месяца назад

      @@jfbmusic thanks for the reply! They are usually in the same location, but I’m not great at being diligent when it comes to process and was hoping there was a system folder or something at the OS level that could be utilized eg copied over or otherwise synced periodically as opposed to mapping a central network location with installers. Oh well! I suppose there are financial reasons for not making this easy as it could be easier to use pirated plugins or something. Oh well, still glad I asked! Cheers!

    so could you theoretically go into your plugin folder for already downloaded plugins and delete all vst, vst3 and aax for all your plugins if you only use logic?

    • @conanmiddleton925
      @conanmiddleton925 5 месяцев назад

      I see no reason why not, seeing as Logic only uses the AU format you won't need the others.

    • @weschilton
      @weschilton 3 месяца назад +1

      I dont recommend deleting VSTs as a good many plugins are only VST format, and the AU component is just a wrapper on the VST. If you blow them all away you will have some plugins that stop working.

    My biggest irritation is when an installer installs a VST in addition to an AU, when I only want the AU.

    • @weschilton
      @weschilton 3 месяца назад

      Many plugins are actually only VST with AU and AAX wrappers... if you don't install the VST the plugin may not work.

  • @togitom
    @togitom 5 месяцев назад

    Some plugin companies built their Audio Unit plugins work codependent to the VSTs, right? I would be careful if I were you. As long as you have their installer, you should be safe 😅

    • @jfbmusic
      @jfbmusic 3 месяца назад

      Good point. Because the plugins are quite small, I usually keep the VST3 versions just in case - and so I can use LUNA or Ableton Live if I want to.

    • @weschilton
      @weschilton 3 месяца назад

      Yes the AU component is just a compatibility wrapper for Logic.

  • @McCuban

    Ugh... Safari! Other than that, great video. What about CLAP though, I can't find much information on those and whether they are compatible or not?
