Good Review. Of course, the Pro will be better in most regards. You pay for that, though. I've been an artist for 30 years and I've worked with everything you can imagine and some you can't. It's painful to hear this, but an iPad Pro wont make your drawing better. After you become accustomed to any drawing media you will still be at the same artistic level. Learn to use what tools you have available to you. I draw on a 6th gen iPad with 1st gen pencil. I also draw on a Cintiq at work. My art is the same across both platforms. The key is in practice. Do pressure, hatching and circle warm-ups on any media you are going to use first, then do sillouettes for practice and then some rendering. Do this every day. Whether it's an iPad or a pad of paper and a pen, just practice what you have available.
Michael Oxley thank you so much, finally someone who manages to tell you that you need practice without smashing it into your face
Circle warms up? Tell me what to do with it
@@nabilmuviawan5096 draw circles to warm you up for drawing
I needed to hear this
@@nabilmuviawan5096 Warm ups get your hand and mind working together. This is especially needed for digital media. The idea is to draw circles with a loose hand. Then draw hatching with a loose hand. Draw them fast and slow. Draw spirals and then draw sharp corner shapes. Don't spend all day at it, just do enough to wake your hand up. You'll know when you've done enough. Move from that into drawing something. Start loose then refine into your drawing. Don't be afraid to erase and go again.

It seems as if I would be a great fit for this iPad. I prefer the Pro but I want to draw now and it would take me longer to save for the pro than this iPad, so I might end up getting this one. Thanks so much for showing the layer counts (I took notes!) and your overall experience 😃
And hey if you don’t want that iPad I know someone who would take it off your hands 😉
Hahaha Thats great! Like I said plenty of people have said they enjoy their 6th gen so my complaints aren’t too serious. This Ipad is already adopted into its new home hehehe...
e r g o j o s h ahh I see! I hope it enjoys its new home 😊
Get the iPad Air then! It has a much powerful processor than the standard iPad and doesn't have a huge markup price compared to the Pro.
I’ve got the 6th gen and it works great. I’ve illustrated an entire children’s books on this thing.
You can check out the Ipad pro 10.5 2017. I think it'll be better than this and doesn't cost too much now compare to this.
"The screen size is too small."
BRO, YOUR HANDS ARE MASSSSIIVVVVEEEEEE
haha i think the same
it looks like a mini with those hands😂
YAoi haNdS 😭
the ipad pro didn't even look 12.9 inch in length!
Yeah my hands are the size of an iPhone and it makes me wonder how he can even draw like that tbh
He saying that the size of the screen was a problem to him because his hands can easily cover it and I'm here drawing on my phone lol

@Ahmed Kelkouli yes
The first time watching this review I thought “OMG this iPad looks so tiny it’ll be kinda uncomfortable to work on (even though my main device was an iPad mini 2 since 4 years)” but now I just realized that the 12.9 inches are really a GIGANTIC screen 10.2 is the best big screen RN, if it’s on your budget you should get it with the idea of using it for a long time the fact that there is a new model every year doesn’t mean you need to upgrade that often.
Also, this model was intended for educational purposes (taking notes, reading books, etc.) not exactly art but won’t let you down with it. As a college student if I should choose between a game console or this, the decision is obvious.
The bottom line is: Take the advantages of what you can afford and don’t suffer for what’s beyond your limits
Sigma7 your so right thankyou.
I really need someone to say this to me 😭
I really need that. Thnks..
I bought this one for art - but not as a professional just a hobbyist
Hunty I personally use it for full pieces and it works just fine , especially if you’re on a budget . Of course it isn’t the best but if you can’t afford the best (like me ) it’s a median !
This is my first time watching a video of yours and BRUH I did NOT expect that voice... you need to read audio books for audible or something
True XD
EDIT: I wanted to mention Procreate doesn't actually crash as often as I said on very large canvases. I meant to correct it in post - Its more like once every 3-4 hours and almost always upon performing a task involving layer management (new layer/duplicating/merging) and always saves up to the previous action when reopened.

Hi in interested on the new microsoft surface pro x for art i Like the ipad pro but i prefer the microsoft surface because of the form factor that have Windows on it anyway i have been looking for good art in a surface pro product but theres no one i really want to start making digital art but i dont know if get an ipad pro or the surface pro x please help.
I'm not even subscribed and yet I saw this video with only 37 comments it's like I subscribe to people but I don't hit the subscribe button yes I'm wizard
I can't say for sure if the X will be a good competitor but you definitely will not be dissapointed if you spend similar expense on a new ipad + apple pencil.
Thank you for this review. It saves me a lot of headache lol but can you pin this comment? It might be useful to other people rather than have to scroll down. Once again Thx a lot ☺️
Is it okay if I spend more dollar on the Ipad Air 3 instead? I wonder if the A10 won't keep up with heavy multi-tasking. Also, does the crash happen due to the processor of the Ipad 7th? Love your video tho. Nice art too.
Regards!
APPLE JUST INCLUDE THE DAMN PENCIL!!! like god it’s annoying 🤯😂
Uriel Ramirez right. And I would also like if they had like a matte rose gold option for the Apple Pencil so it will match the case I got for my ipad XD Why don’t they sell them in different textures and colors XD
GopherCake Because they want you wanting more. Instead of giving you want you want.
@@51629jbgemu 😔 they probably just didn't think of it
Uriel Ramirez yeah they’ll do that but first they’ll have to drastically reduce the pencils quality
@@poosydestroyer6545 why? They have enough money and enough willing customers to maintain quality while having a more versitile stock of pencils. It doesn't keep them from making super expensive phones while these are only 90 dollar pencils
I’m a new artist. Well drawer I’ve been drawing for 3 months on paper and got tired of buying paper so I got this iPad. It cost me 250$ on sale at target and I got the pencil as well. I’ve been drawing on it since December 2019 and I’ve improved drastically. I love drawing on this thing but I’m a beginner, still it’s dope and fun
Awesome 😁
Thank youuu, I wish I got it on sale, maybe I can find one. But I kept going back and forth with the pro/air/iPad and now it’s like I’m going to go with the cheapest because I’m just a beginner. This was the push I needed
Hoes Mad just graduated also, parents were like we can’t buy it but here $200, and I got a couple hundred dollars from other family members. So here I go!
Maiyonna H. Glad to hear that! Although I only graduated from middle school so I only got like 100$ from it 🤧😅.

I love my 7th gen iPad. I'm used to drawing on a 13 inch Cintiq-style graphics tablet but I haven't had any issues using the 10.2 iPad. You are correct that the screen is a bit more slippery than the iPad Pro/Air but this is easily remedied with a matte screen protector. I know so many people who have pros who still use Matte or Paper-like screen protectors in which case the surface of the pro and budget are the same. Everything else works great. I was concerned that the non-laminate screen would bother me (since my graphics tablet is a bonded display) but it's not an issue at all. I don't notice any parallax and, when drawing, the mark always appears right under where the pen touched. I think this iPad is great for people just starting digital art and, once you have a screen protector, the drawing experience is just as good as the smaller iPad Pros.
how about the memory????? im on the fence on getting this ipad since its only 32 gb shsgbsgsvs :((
I agree with you. Before i get the 10.2 iPad, I thought that would bother me in the drawing(non laminated screen). But now I really dont think like that. Paperlike screen protector really works.
@@plsdonotperceiveme2999 it's on sale at best but for 330 for 128gb
can i ask what stylus did you get? The apple one or an alternative? I was going to go for an alternative but it doesn't have pressure sensitivity... Thankyouu
I had the iPad 10.2, and it was really nice, but I traded it in for the iPad Pro 10.5. The drawing experience with pro motion, and a laminated display are simply better. However, the iPad 10.2 was still perfectly capable and I’m sure if I hadn’t compared it with my iPad I would’ve never really noticed the differences.
I’m getting this for Christmas and I was so nice to actually find a review for it
I'm also getting it for Christmas
I’m getting one too
Hope it works for you both!

No but my grandma does
THIS is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much for this. I just recently bought the new generation iPad to transition into digital art but was really worried I wasn’t going to get the same experience as I would with an air or pro. Most of the articles I’ve read says the pro is the best for digital art and getting any other iPad would essentially be a waste. This comparison is so perfect, honest And eliminates any buyer remorse I may have had. I’m a beginner, lil tiny hands- sounds like I made the right choice lol
Finally, my small hands are a blessing. Up until now, they've only been good for reaching into the Pringles can. 🙌🏻

Omg looking at your hands size, you're definitely better off with the 12.9" screen 😂 just looking at this video I can feel your issue with the screen size. I have the 2018 6th gen iPad, and I'm fine with it, because my hands aren't as big as yours
Thank you for this thorough breakdown of the iPad 10.2. I'm not a digital artist, but am looking for something to work up ideas and cartoons for my tapestries. My current iPad Mini doesn't support a pencil to use with Procreate so I'm upgrading, and you have convinced me that this would be all I really need.

My first iPad was the 9.7 and I loved it. I had the chance to trade it in for the iPad Air 3 and did so just to be a bit more future-proof. Both of them are great for drawing, but definitely get a matte screen protector.

I have the IPad mini 2 that came out in 2013 (a 6 years old device). I broke the glass AND the display 3 years ago but got if fixed. It works well for an IPad that old but I noticed that updates are no longer available for it. Soon my good old IPad won’t be performing well anymore. So this year I’ll get a new IPad. I don’t need the pro nor the Air, because I’m not a professional artist and honestly any newer IPad will be better than the one I have currently. I think it’s the best option for me as I am on a budget (I am paying for it myself and as a 17 years old, 389€ is a huge amount of money to pay plus the 99€ for the pen). If I could I would get the pro but tbh I think I don’t need it and it’s too expensive for me. I think I just want it because it’s fancier and somewhat more powerful but I’m sure the 2019 IPad will get the job done beautifully too.
Thank you so much, as a young artist this has helped me of which one I should get. I have been stressing over it lately.
i have the 10.2 inch but mine is the 8th gen and its great for digital art i recommend getting the apple pencil with it too i wish i could get the 12.9 inch but its wayy to much money for me (i'm someone who is fairly new to digital art ) also i have no problem with it it's really good if u are on a budget like i was i recommend it
i bought the ipad 7th gen the month it came out bc i had been saving up for an ipad pro 10.5 inch for literal years, and didnt know there were much cheaper options. i saw ads for the 7th gen, and i already had the 300 something dollars saved up, so i bought it, and then bought procreate and an apple pencil with what was left of my money. i have absolutely no regrets, because at least now i can finally continue with digital art (my laptop died last year and i had no other digital supplies that worked without being plugged to the laptop). if i ever feel the need to upgrade, i can do that on my own accord without rushing due to not having another option for digital
ᴘᴇᴀᴄʜʏᴋᴇᴇɴ im in love with my 7th gen ipad. if your goal is to use it mainly for drawing, it’s pretty great. it’s small enough for me to just slip it in my backpack so i can also use it for taking notes in class, which is great. it’s a little bit smaller than a regular piece of copy paper, so if that size doesn’t bother you, it’s great! if it does, i’d suggest going for the ipad pro. with the 7 gen though, the surface is super super slippery with your apple pencil, so i’d definitely suggest buying a matte screen protector like PaperLike or some other cheaper brand. it just makes it feel more like a pencil and paper and it keeps the apple pencil from slipping around while you draw
i have tiny hands so the small screen doesn’t bother me at all like how it bothers josh. for me? i totally recommend it
Hey. I’m looking to buy the iPad 2019 10.2 but my dilemma is that I need to draw pictures in procreate in 150 dpi - 100x70cm. So I was wondering if you could do me a big favor, and se how many layers I could get with those numbers 😅 would really appreciate it.
Mathias Enemark so unfortunately with those measurements and DPI, the max layers you can get on procreate first the ipad 10.2 is 6 layers. however if you save up some extra money and get an ipad pro instead, i believe you can get up to 128 layers! don’t quote me on that, though, look it up because i’m not sure. i believe all sizes can get 128 layers on the ipad pro. the ipad pro has more ram than the ipad, and its ram that determines max layers!
Castiel Reid Thanks for the quick reply!!. Alright but thanks!

I'm gonna get this iPad. Because I'm a kid (I'm only 13) I can’t afford to get the pro. I'm really excited to get into digital art. I've watched so many of your videos. I was a little worried about the screen gap, but many people have said you don't really notice it unless you really look at it. Love the video!
You are going to love it! Enjoy
e r g o j o s h thanks!
e r g o j o s h I just got it yesterday, and I cracked it. I'm literally crying.
Anisha Somasamudramath it does, but I got it fixed. It's was really expensive tho
Anisha Somasamudramath I did get apple care, but it was $69 to get apple care, and then $49 to fix the iPad. Because in a kid, that's really expensive. At least it's protected for 2 years
I remember watching this video over and over when i was getting the 7th gen ipad for christmas and I can say it lasted me a very good 3 years before I upgraded to the 6th gen ipad pro :) Literally helped me throught my animation degree at university and can honestly say you dont need the most expensive ipad to get into digital art.
I just got an iPad like this and am hoping to get the Pencil for xmas. I am no artist but have been scribbling happily on a Surface Pro 3 and 5 using both gens of Surface Pen since 2014 and love it for a casual "artist" like me, though I use the pen mainly for notetaking. I am interested to see how the pencil compares, I'm expecting good things of course, though no doubt I'll be trying to reverse the pencil to erase like I do with the Surface Pen lol!
I can’t wait to get this in 3 months!!! I hope I can get an Apple Pencil eventually. Most people aren’t gonna have the problems you had. All the other iPads would have that problem, not just this one. You can also turn Siri off and out the screen protector on there. Most of us don’t have huge hands either
I have been using this iPad for about a year for school and digital art and I say the price is worth it 100%, and it’s on” about half the price of the pro
thank you soooo much for this video. I've been going back and forth on which ipad to purchase for Christmas
Glad to help!

That being said I'm trying to invest in and iPad and the iPad 7th generation might be the best starter for me and then later down the road is my business growth I think I will invest in the iPad Pro since you have so clearly listed out the differences for us. thank you so much. P.s. I love your voice! Amazing God bless and thank you
Thanks for the review. I'm not new to digital art. But I have had a child recently and I can't get to my desk as often so I'd figured I would get this 10.2 iPad. Wanna make digital art without being at my desk. Keep up the good work.
For those curious what the "slippery" pencil experience is like:
-Grab your phone (with a generic screen protector to avoid scratching)
-Find a mechanical pencil (with led tucked in) or your tablet's drawing pen
-Draw or write on the screen as you would on paper
I've yet to use an Ipad but imagine the Plastic on Glass experience feels like this. It lets me understanding what reviewers mean by "less control while drawing" & their need for a matte screen protector as an artist.
i just got used to the feeling of drawing on glass with the plastic tip. I actually don't mind surprisingly when i first used the apple pencil... I stick with a glass protector because i'm clumsy haha.
@@leynanguyen40 I watched another RUclipsr who became accustomed to the glass surface and preferred it after giving a matte screen protector a try. I can see it being manageable over time. Though yeah, certainly worthwhile getting a proper screen protector for those of us who are clumsy!

I'm a Brazilian professional artist using my Wacom Cintiq for over 3 years. So you can guess I'm super ok with the screen gap. But I'm currently looking for an alternative to work away from my desktop on hot days. I was considering the 9.7 inch option for a while... But I work on a 12 inch cintiq (it's the old model, with 10 buttons + 2 sliders) I believe 10.2" is the lower I can get because when I paint landscape, concept art I like to keep the zoom out during most of the painting process to get a better view on the composition.

Aaah! I low-key want the iPad pro for making art (I never did art on a tablet before). But the ipad also seems like a good deal to try it out..
it really is I have the 6th generation ipad its 9.7 inch. And it’s so good ! They are both great ngl
I have this exact ipad in this exact color lol i am very new to digital art, only about 4 months in and i hear you on the slippery screen. It took me a while to get used to that. Right now though i love my ipad and it does the job ☺ very good for beginners like you said
I've not been spoiled by the iPad pro lol, 'cause I can't afford it, I had a 2015 iPad air so this iPad would be fantastic for me. I think imma get it.
Your voice is so soothing omg! 🥺
i've been a digital artist most of my life and i've never understood the matt vs glossy thing, like in theory i get it people like the feeling of paper but once i got used to drawing on a screen i didn't really miss it
CupcakeGhost that was my concern when I first got this iPad. Honestly I’m used to drawing on the screen with no matte protector now so it really isn’t a big deal for me personally
I ordered this ipad yesterday, its arriving today and I am so excited! I had a few worries it wouldn't be able to run procreate but it should be good :)
I would say good there's a bit of bad stuff but still great. Best iPad draw tablet for price 10.5 Air because better display no gap between pencil glass . Also a bit larger and better specs which may help
I think the ipad pro 10.5 is better because of 120hz and its cheaper
Your voice is so smooth and nice wow I’m in love
I never had any experience with digital art, but im saving money for two years now, and everyone talks abt the ipad pro, but i was wandering if the ipad would be ok
manu jaegar if I can offer any advice, it would be to keep saving that money and get the pro. I had an iPad Air 3 for almost a year and highly regretted it since I draw a lot for a living and I was finally able to get the pro and honestly I like the experience a lot better than my old iPad.
okasai thank you! i made my decision and will keep saving the money 😊
@@manuela0986 I don't mean to diss okasai, but seeing as you're just starting with digital art I would highly recommend getting the iPad air 3. While the pro is better in some aspects the air will last longer and the average person won't miss the extra features from the pro. The other person replying had stated that they do art a lot for their living which is means they probably need a lot more from their device then you will any time soon. I would also like to mention that the iPad air 3 isn't old in anyway as it came out last year. Anyways with all this in mind I recommend that you do your own research to decide what's best for you as neither I nor the anyone else online know you, your skill level, what you are planning to do on the iPad, ect.
Celeste Yuki this is awesome advice, thank you lots, i think i might actually do this instead, bc i really don’t have the money now and i have worries abt the ipad pro being too bendable haha, thanks :)
@@manuela0986 Yeah ofc! I felt bad knowing that someone might spend extra money that they didn't need to. Make sure to look at backmarket.com or in apples refurbished section for to save a little extra money
The video I've been searching for all this while. Thank you for making this.
When I heard him talk for the first time, I was like, "WOAH"
You are good at this bro! I thought the review was thorough and well presented.
Your voice kinda reminds me of Markiplier's quietest let's play lel
Good video as always, but for future tests, make sure you have the same DPI settings on both iPads.
If you work with 300 DPI, you will not have as many layers as if you work with 72 DPI on Procreate.
This is a huge difference to consider, if you want to print your art, it will be more complicated to have many layers with this iPad.
Meanwhile I'm drawing on a galaxy tab 8 inches with spen(not the 2019 ver.)
Lol me too. Pretty sure mines a 2015 version.
This will be my first ipad of my own and the very beginning of my journey with digital art, so this will suffice until I maybe upgrade to a pro in a couple years
about the layer comparisson you forgot to edit the DPI its different
I'm extremely pleased with my iPad 7 gen for drawing in Procreate
2:57 HAHAHHA😂😂
I was randomly watching art videos then clicked this one (May I remind you that I've never seen this channel) And I peed myself his voice is so deep
