As someone who has been drawing digitally for 6 years: you DON'T need to spend hundreds on a tablet. If you are a beginner (or even if you aren't), you can draw with a cheap 40$ huion or xp-pen non-screen tablet. I always see people encouraging beginners to get an iPad. An iPad, man. That's not cheap for sure. I've been working with my very basic wacom intuos small for 5 years and I would only switch to a display tablet if I had lots of spare money. If you wanna draw on the go, okay, an iPad or stylus tablet might be more comfortable. But if you're looking for a tablet to connect to the computer and draw at home, like most people: you don't need a screen display if you're on a tight budget. Drawing on a non-display tablet is NOT hard. You get used to it very quickly. Once you feel comfortable or have a bigger budget, you can switch to a display tablet.
I am just so sad for those hundreds of beginners whose first tablet is an expensive screen display and months later they decide digital/art is not for them.
Edit: Okay yes if you dont have a pc of course its a lot cheaper to get a regular tablet/iPad. But I was giving advice to those who have PCs, to get a non screen tablet first
Edit 2: someone mentioned a mouse and I remembered lol I also started with a mouse before my first tablet!

SiraGem Art the iPad is good for many people though because people use them for lots more than just art, also, lots of people may not have a computer, and a £300 iPad is cheaper than a decent computer + drawing tablet

I saved up money and bought a huion kamvas and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I’m making money (as a side job, but do I hecking love doing art) within my community comfortably. You are very much correct tho, many people do not need to spend a ton of money on screen tablets and will work beautifully on a non-display tablet.

for me it's funny how every youtuber talking that ipad mini is just for scatches and small stuff like that. Believe or not, that's not true. It's the size of an A5 paper. I work with it every day, doing graphic design, paintings, music, photo editing and video editing. Without a single problem. So, rather buy iPad mini 5, than an entry level iPad. It's so much faster, stronger and better. For almost the same amount of money.

    • @ergojosh

Definitely! I should have mentioned it, but for me Its just an absolute non option due to the size. It may be the same size as an A5 sheet of paper, but digital tablets don’t come close to the detail that you get out of drawing in real life.

For those on a budget, the older iPad Pro models are still extremely capable art tools. I have the original 12.9” Pro and just have had no excuse to upgrade because it can handle anything I want it to with Clip Studio and have gotten quite good results (google my name with art after it and google images will show some examples, done with that old iPad Pro if you’d like to see for confirmation). I do have a matte screen protector on it as I feel like it is a better drawing experience and closer to paper. But the price between those older generation Pros and the new ones is big - you can save a lot and like Josh said, if you don’t end up using it for art then you still have an iPad. Now I use a dedicated drawing monitor for a lot of work but it’s still great to take the iPad anywhere to draw or just chill on the couch (I’ll often do my line art on iPad and then move to pc if I need paint emulation). I would stay away from Gaomon based on my experience and older Huions. The newest Huions are quite good (laminated screen, etched glass for a more paper like texture) though.

mich mich I hear you on that. It’s really noticeable with phones I think, however I’ve found iPads to last much longer and in the past few years with ram amounts getting higher longevity will be good. My daughter is using my old iPad Air and it’s like 7 years old now and can still run Procreate just fine. For her uses at least, I wouldn’t want to use it with those limitations but she’s 8 - but the point there is that an 7 year old phone would not be anywhere near as usable. And my first gen iPad Pro is still doing impressively well. Sure the way the new pencil charges is nice, and I’m sure the screen looks nicer as well as the updated design, and it will certainly not last as long as if I bought a new one. For art though I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon unless programs like Corel Painter start coming to iPad (which is very resource heavy but I don’t think they will ever move a full featured app to iPad). It does come down to cost vs. perceived value though so I don’t think I can tell anyone what they should do, just that you can get an older (maybe not even first gen, but one a little newer) iPad Pro for a significant savings over the latest and greatest and most likely not be needing an upgrade for a long time. I wouldnt be surprised if I need a new laptop before a new iPad and I got them both the same year.

    Recommendations @4:25!
I also forgot to mention something in regard to tablet sizes. The biggest factor of picking a size comes down to your desk space, and how big your hands are. So for example, if you have big hands like me, anything less than the 12.9" Ipad pro will be a pain (but you can get use to it, especially if you haven't used the bigger size before) IF you have little desk space, then of course a small stationary tablet will be what you should get as well. HOWEVER, generally, for most artists, the bigger, the better. Its a common known fact that the more you get used to drawing from your elbow and shoulder in combination with your wrist for small details, the better your drawings will be. The bigger the tablet, the more freedom you have with this. This also means that you don't have to zoom in as much, which often times, kills a drawing, at least for me.

Hey man I'm new to your channel and like your style of videos. I bought the 11 inch iPad Pro instead of the 12.9" I don't know if I have big or small hands, but the price difference is a big deal and digital art lets you zoom in and out so bigger screen is kinda luxury imo

As owner of display, non-display and IPAD pro, I would like to share my opinion.
I met lots of people with mindset that non-display tablets are not as good as display ones because it is not the same feeling as traditional media.
But just imagine non-display tablets as future which eliminated cons that tradition media has. When you use it you can finally sit with your back and neck straight, not covering your artwork with your hand and make smaller arm/wrist movements to achieve bigger strokes. Which results in seeing artwork clearly, speeding up your process and giving more comfort and health. One week of getting used to this new technlogy sounds good to me. :)
P.S. I work at least 3x faster on non-display tablet.

I use Wacom Intuos Pro M size for 27inch 2k monitor. I used to use L size of same model and I have a feeling that I had a liiitle bit more precise lines. But M size takes less space on desk, can be put into backpack and allows me to make smaller strokes to achieve the same result => helps my arm/hand move across the screen faster and is more healthy in the long run.
If I were a novice and had enough money I would go for Wacom M. If I didn’t have, I would seek for alternative in HUION store I guess. I don’t think there will be a big difference.

@@aykoric hi, IPAD is more like sketchbook. It is great for having fun and relax but very difficult to make money with. I mean you can make commissions there but be prepared to be several times slower in that. I think the best option is to have powerful PC and 2 monitors. I would recommend to have main monitor at least 2k 27inch with good colors (that is what I use), the second one can be worse and used for references, browser, music, discord and w/e else you need for work.
But having notebook and non display tablet M size (Wacom Intuos Pro will never dissapoint) is pretty solid way too. You will still be able to carry it in your backpack and paint in cafes. Just make sure to have big good additional monitor on your desk so you can be as productive as possible when working from home. Trust me, you will love it (my gf has this setup and she is angry that she didn’t buy additional monitor earlier).

I just ordered an ipad Pro for the exact reason you mentioned, I am a pretty good artist when it comes to drawing and the idea of being able to draw on a tablet is awesome. While drawing on paper will always be my favorite thing, the convenience of drawing digitally with all the colors, brushes, etc. I can imagine is an awesome thing that I really want to give a shot. But if I end up not liking it too much, hey its okay, cause I still have an ipad pro that I can use for my career as an architect and just for consuming media and playing games. Thanks for this video!

This review was fantastic! I love how you kept it within a specific range of products that you can trust, but you also didn’t narrow it down too much where there were only a few recommended options. I’m looking for a tablet that I can use for multiple uses, like art and college work. I was thinking of an iPad Pro, but wanted to see a professional opinion on the matter so I researched a bit and then remembered seeing your video in my feed. I haven’t been a subscriber for a while but I’m glad I am because most of your videos have proved to be really helpful for me and I wanted to say thank you so much!

my hands are so very small so i decided on an 11 inch ipad pro even though literally everyone says you Have to get a 12.9. im getting it in 3 days! i am very serious with art so the 1.2k price point was good enough for me especially since im using it for school and such as well. the price really racked up to 1.5k because of insurance/applecare/accessories which im planning on buying even more of/and even then i had chosen the cheapest options. the decision really depends on budget/hobbyist or wanting to sell art/hand size/ and what youre planning on doing with it. i could never use a non display tablet or one strictly for drawing because i wouldnt be able to justify the price.

I recently got the 2nd gen iPad Pro from 2017. $300 on eBay and I'm VERY satisfied with it. It's at least as good as a 2019 iPad Air. Apple releases "new builds" of the iPad every year, but the specs aren't exactly jumping ahead by leaps and bounds. Calling it new is just a sales tactic to make people think that they need to spend a bunch of money on a new tablet(And it works. Especially with the phones).

iPad Pro 2nd Gen 2017 still has ProMotion (120hz, less latency) so it's objectively better than Air 2019 for drawing, both use Apple Pen 1.
iPad Pro;'s from 2018 onwards uses Apple Pen 2 already, it's better, just works at all times with no hassle, the tilt/rotation.

Quick tip for those who want to work in a professional field: EMPLOYERS WILL NOT HIRE THOSE WITH AN IPAD, OR ANYONE THAT DOESNT HAVE A SCREEN-ONLY FOR-DESKTOP TABLET. there are little widely used pro apps on the iPad, so it would be hard for the employer to work with you

You can get by doing professional FREELANCE work with an ipad + procreate. But yeah if you want to work in a professional field, employers/studios will require knowledge of using Pen-Display tablets (like the Cintiq) and industry software such as Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint. You can get by without knowing how to use a pen-display tablet, but you'll need the software skills to get hired. Procreate most likely won't cut it in a professional studio.

    • @esther6664
      @esther6664 4 года назад +32

Don't make it a generality , Photoshop is indeed as for no the most commonly used app in the industry but some studio are starting to shift and use procreate too, I don't know in what field you are specificlly speaking about but in the Video-games , animation industry that's the case.
Photoshop is the traditional way but if you bring the good art it doesn't really matter what software you use since lots of artist who work at a company (in the field i talked about) bring their stuff usualy

      Hey um, just a suggestion...
If you'll buy a tablet for digital art, you should probably just opt for the older iPad Pros, even the Gen 1 works fine. Since they are older models, they are cheaper, and they offer a bigger screen size, with more RAM. Currently, the iPad Air has 3gb ram, but the older iPad pros offer 4gb RAM, as well as 6GB. A certain youtuber did a video on this, i think it was BeeJayDel, and he actually recommends the First Gen iPad Pro, and he also uses it for his work.
*third gen ipad pros are now @ ≈$500, and @ ≈$450 for student discounts

Yeah I’ve been noticing that trend a bit online as well. Don’t get me wrong because I think Procreate is a great art program app, but man I can’t imagine switching from Clip Studio Paint on my computer w/ my Intuos to Procreate on iPad. I’ve messed with many art programs on my computer for a few years and in the end I personally think Clip Studio Paint is absolutely amazing (their brush engine and stabilization is perfect for me) and nothing can compare. Also I’m pretty sure multitasking on the computer is easier than on an iPad (sometimes I put my references on a separate window from CSP and/or I watch a livestream or video while drawing).
I think I only know two people I casually follow who use CSP, but I’m honestly okay with that because thankfully the asset community on the Clip Studio website is really active if I ever need to look for a brush.

Nobody I think it’s the size of your screen. Because drawing on a phone professionals struggle with.

I always laugh when the iPad pro is marketed as a "laptop replacement", don't get me wrong I love my iPad pro but nothing beats a real operating system. Also as Josh has pointed out, 3D artists have no choice in this matter, 3D apps on iOS suck donkey balls. I'm a 2D and 3D artist, the iPad Pro can mostly replace a 2D workflow but will never be a good device for 3D work, let along rendering.

@@Kenosha01 My setup is pretty old, a quad core AMD processor with hyperthreading, 32 GB of DDR3 Ram and and recently upgraded RTX 2070.
Hardware for 3D applications is not a "1 size fits all" situation at least according to this article www.neweggbusiness.com/smartbuyer/buying-guides/build-buy-3d-design-workstation/
TL;DR, you want a lot of ram a high clock speed CPU with a lot of cores and a GPU with CUDA cores. Also big harddrives, 3D files get huge fast.
To be frank a desktop setup will be much cheaper than a beefed out Mobile workstation or laptop (there is a difference)

Absolutely bloody agree with you 3D work needs powerful software and I doubt the ipad will be capable of that any time soon.

It might be good for 3D if apps like Forger keep on getting updated as fast as they are. Maybe Blender could even come over. But it does everything else pretty much at the top level. Editing photos and video, 2D art, an animation app that is getting updated greatly and really good in Callipeg, etc in a small form factor.

    • @ryy1704
      @ryy1704 4 года назад

@@xaviercopeland2789 it can do small simple animations, but definitely can't do full-fledged 3d/2d animation that need tons of frame work and effects.
