I kinda understand though. She doesn't trust StarClan, and so when Shadowsight GETS HIS NAME for his StarClan induced visions, which turned out to NOT be from StarClan but from Ashfur (somehow) and the CAUSE (however indirectly Shadowsight DID bring this about by listening to Ashfur rather than talking about it with his mentor or father or other medicine cats more experienced and the people he talked to just went along with AN APPRENTICE despite his little experience healing) of all this chaos. He doesn't have the EXPERIENCE actually HEALING cats like Mothwing and Puddleshine and Jayfeather. So I can certainly understand her resentment towards him-she must think he didn't actually EARN it like she had or others had.

I still don’t understand why she just takes out her anger about this on him though. Medicine cats are apprenticed for more than 6 months so this excuse about Shadowsight being less experienced than Moth makes no sense. Akira is going on about how she was to emotional to think strait but hates Mapleshade even though that is what Mapleshade has been said to be going through. (Not saying I like Maple, I just don’t like the new Mothwing.) Shadowsight doesn’t even know what he did wrong! -sorry, this topic is making me frustrated O.O I hope the books make it clear if she was meant to be a huge foxheart or if she was supposed to be like Akira described. Sorry for the long comment and not hate intended! :>

didnt mothwing have her full name before she even started training as a medicine cat? she never earned her name for medicine cat duties. for that matter, jayfeather got his name by guilting his brother to steal catmint from windclan. he didnt really "earn" it the way that all the other full medicine cats believed. besides, at this point, mothwing KNOWS starclan is real, she just doesnt trust their judgement(which is valid tbh). the only thing shadowsight really did "wrong" here was listening to ashfur, but really, what would ANY other cat have done? if all of starclan is silent but just one cat is hearing from them, would it be right to ignore them?
@@silverluna1584 yup. A common problem this series has is it struggles to find believable conflict, so it just makes up its own. How many times has a cat not told someone something because "they won't believe me"? It made sense in the first arc when fireheart was an outsider and tigerclaw was a respectable warrior. Nowadays? Not so much. Idk thats more of a commentary on the writing itself rather than the characters, tho

I feel like the authors wanted Shadowsight's arc in this book to be at least FEELING like every cat in his life turns against him, since it's his POV, and Mothwing gets swept up in that. Absolutely done dirty, even if her own hurt and motivations lines up. Broken Code is one big opportunity to start mending a lot of relationships and hurts and I hope they lean into that, including with Mothwing.
I’m ngl, the scene where she and Tigerheartstar and Puddleshine were basically subtly telling Shadowsight that he was a bad medicine cat legitimately upset me. There were angry tears in my eyes. If I’m being honest I’ve never liked Mothwing, so perhaps that’s part of it but ahhh it was just too much. It sorta just... sounds like people are making excuses to me. I relate to Shadowsight a lot too so maybe that’s it.

I almost want Tawnypelt to confront Mowthwing about her attitude toward Shadowsight since Tawnypelt had a nice bond with Shadowsight in her novella and it be interesting to have the two half sisters talk about their issues but be opposite of Hawkfrost and Bramblestar where maybe Tawnypelt can get to know Mothwing and understand her better.
I respect Akira’s courage in making this video and dealing with Blixemi’s 20 paragraph essay on why Jayfeather is the broken one. Ma’am, you are braver than I am lol

I SAWED THIS MOTHWING IN HALF
A lot went on her life. First, her brother tadpole died. Then Sasha left her and Hawkfrost in the clans and they had a hard time accepting her. Hawk frost then abused her and was killed. There was constant pressure put on her due to her lack of belief in StarClan and what would happen if anyone found out. Then Leafpool died as well.

I like how they are still making Mothwing an important character, and not just some background cat. Even though I didn't really like her role in Darkness Within, I think its sweet she is staying with Harelight and Icewing

I feel that Mothwing changed because Leafpool died. The two were very close (yes maybe that close), and I can see mothwing’s character changes by sudden death. Her connection with here mother, Sasha, really changed. I can see Mothwing as cat who does not take loss very well.

Mothering is just growing into an old and grumpy cat who doesn’t want young cats trying to tell her that they know more than her. That’s what I think.

An important note that we can consider is that we're seeing this from Shadowsight's point of view. Of course Shadowsight feels hurt. He's being talked down to, condescended, and having his rank stripped away from him, in addition to all his troubles with Ashfur and the Bramblestar situation. That said, we can't rely on him to be entirely truthful of the situation.
Puddleshine was a half-trained medicine cat who was hastily promoted because ShadowClan just...didn't have one. And they needed one. The fact that he took on an apprentice so early into his medicine cat career is stunning, and it's not that far off to guess that Shadowsight's training could've been lacking. We have no guarantee that Shadowsight has "special knowledge" relevant to ShadowClan's herbs in particular, just that he's trying to defend Puddleshine's teachings from Mothwing.
At the end of the day, Shadowsight is a child that Mothwing just doesn't trust to be in charge of cats' lives. While we may feel empathetic for Shadowsight (I cried reading the book in his scenes), that doesn't make Mothwing a terrible person for not trusting someone who was incompletely trained to take care of every problem sufficiently.
whether its explained or not she was still a jerk and even if he was responsible for bramblestars death lots of medicine cats cant save cats (briarlight, flametail) she cant complain that its his fault, she probably couldn't save some cat.

If she can be forgiven for being a inexperienced medicine cat then so can he, he can probraly be forgiven easier since he was being manipulated by Ashfur who everyone can very easily (at least some) say that he was a good cat, why shouldnt he listen to a starclan cat.

I haven't yet read Darkness Within however you have to remember that Mothwing never believed in StarClan and now chaos has been caused by the lack of StarClan/someone thinking its StarClan. Shes probably so frustrated over the clans not realising that StarClan is unimportant to some extent. Remember Bluestar? She also had a drastic character change but most people understand why.
Mothwing also lost her kitty girlfriend and now maybe she's latching onto Puddleshine trying to be with Leafpool again since she knows that despite StarClan existing she won't end up there since she doesn't trust or fully believe in them. Shes terrified of never seeing Leadpool again and now shes been kicked out of her clan.

It's funny that mothwing and shadowsight are actually related - shes his great auntie! Nobody really realises that mothwing and tawnypelt are sisters because they never really had a relationship in the book in the same way that hawkfrost/brambleclaw did, I think it would've been nice to see how they felt about being half siblings

Me and my friend also talked about this.. We were so confused on how Mothwing did a 360 and turned into a completely different character. I also ranted about how Mothwing over stepped her position as a medicine cat. These reasons also make sense tho.
Now that I think about it, Firestar and Mothwing are very similar to each other.
Neither of them view StarClan as the all knowing, all powerful beings that many cats view them as.
The difference is while Firestar was straight up told this by StarClan, Mothwing figured it out on her own. Also, Firestar is willing to at least hear StarClan out in most situations, Mothwing is definitely more questioning.
Edit: I really wish that they had given these two more of a connection with each other. It would have been so cool if they could talk to each other about the clans accepting them, and the unique challenges they face.

Cool but I think it’s still totally unfair for her to be able to hurt Shadowsight emotionally without anyone stopping her. Even with those reasons her actions aren’t justified and are just plain out horrible. So she still is being awful and cruel. Hence the fact he does what she asks and she yells at him for it. She can’t blame him for doing what she said and yet she does. This behavior is what sent Shadowsight down the path so Ashfur could use him. It’s a good storyline but they used the wrong character and she needs to be righted so Shadowsight can’t be hurt like this again. He made a lot of mistakes yes but Mothwing has to be a bit more understanding to him instead of pushing him away so she can be the main medicine cat. Again Mothwing isn’t right and needs to be fixed.
Mothwing is mad cuz shes sick of being used and disrespected by her clanmates she misses her clan but feels betrayed by them so she won't go back and she misses her Friend Leafpool

Mothwing believes that Shadowsight doesnt deserve his role, she's been treating cats for a while, and- in a way, it's not THAT fair to her. She's been used AND disrespected, demoted by her leader(later accepted back), and it's all built up pressure over a long time, pressuring her, AND her best friend died.

I love mothwing I read the book about and I was feeling very bad for the book mothwing’s secret make appreciate her even more and I am sure she had a reason for becoming antagonist in the book of the broken code

I feel the same way about Needleclaw. It feels like there's enough to theorize why she had a change in character, but the book gave no explanation so it's all just fan interpretation and head canon.

I agree, but that's really REALLYYYY selfish of Mothwing. She only focuses on her own grieving and her own emotions. She is also very small-minded and isn't open to anyone's thoughts and beliefs. To me, I actually always hated Mothwing. I thought she was boring and annoying and clingy.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but I really don’t like how you say Mothwing’s behavior is completely justified, but the actions of cats like Mapleshade, who also acted on emotions, aren’t. It doesn’t matter if she’s upset, Mothwing still has no right to take her anger out on other cats. I do understand her being upset, but she is an adult cat and should know better than to condemn a literal teenager so harshly.
This video isn't a discussion on whether or not Mothwing was mean. That's a given. She is very obviously written to be antagonistic. This is a discussion on WHY she is acting mean and what could be done in further books to develop reasoning for her behavior.

My answer: She was stuck in the TLC (Tiny Loser Chamber) for over a year in BFDIADO with 40 complete strangers, as well as briefly with Hawkfrost, who escaped the TLC via the Dark Forest (later Evil Leafy ate him along with Ivypool and a 2 other trainees in BFDIADO 5b) and took part in Yellow Face's commercials. was later recovered by Yellow Face.
However, I depict The Great Battle taking place later on in BFDIADO, so this might be contradictory.

Well, I used to be okay with Mothwing in the series, but now.....
I can’t stand her. I Stan Shadow because I relate to him, he thinks he’s doing the right thing, then gets back stabbed, then lectured, though none of the others would have known it was bad too.
I know you have said about the ‘stressed situation’ but, if so stressed, why add more tension?
And, as Shadow was manipulated, then scorned by ALL the clans, like Mothwing, why would she add more anxiety to him? And, sure Mothwing had been teaching longer than Shadow’s life, she doesn’t know SHADOWCLAN herbs and medic methods. And, when you quoted Mothwing saying “You take to long to treat herbs. I’m doing this because I’m concerned for the Clan?” Well remeber that chapter where Yarrowleaf was coughing and hacking at night and Shadowsight wanted to help, but he thought that Mothwing would do something bad to him?
Wait.... if Shadowsight was taught by Puddelshine, who, in a rush, was taught by Leafpool, and one of you reasons was that he lost Leafpool and was by puddle to feel comforted by her apprentice, why would she bully someone under her wisdom. AND, Yellowfang, who taught way more apprentices and wounds in her life time, taught Puddelshine, why would Mothwing, a riverClan medicine cat question Shadowsight’s training? And if Puddelshine, apprentice of Yellowfang and Leafpool, made the decision to make him a full medicine cat, how could one riverClan medicine stomp that out because she has his daddy on her side?
Mothwing’s actions were not right, underestimating minors is not cool Mothwing, that lowers there self esteem.
She did the Pokémon Evolution no one wanted.....

My theory: After getting banished from RiverClan by Mistystar because of her birth, Mothwing decided that she would never let any cat get to her like that again, that's why she was being rude to Shadowsight, because she was just mad at Mistystar for banishing her for something she had no control over, it wasn't her fault her mother had been a kittypet and loner, nor was it her fault that her father wasn't a RiverClan cat, and when Mistystar offered her a new place in RiverClan, Mothwing most likley felt like they only accepted her back because it was revealed that Bramblestar had an impostor, not because they truly wanted her back, that's why she turned it down.
I feel like Moth Wing should've been like: "B**** YOURE JUST LIKE ME!!"

She does believe after the attack. She doesn't want to listen to StarClan as the only choice. Like if StarClan told her to harm a cat instead of heal them, she wouldn't because that goes agaisnt what she believes in.

Something worth mentioning about point 1 is that...Mothwing had to constantly fight just to make herself heard and even as the most senior medicine cat she isnt given a lot of respect (especially from Jayfeather) because of her lack of faith in Starclan. So when she is put in a clan that seems more open to the idea of respecting her and making the most of no starclan, of COURSE she would be like "Yeah I am at a place where I am so sure of my skills and knowledge. I will not let anyone convince me otherwise"

I would also argue that Shadowsight also reminds her a bit of Hawkfrost, even if just slightly, just from how he’s played a part in manipulating other characters and skewing the truth
Shadowsight never lied or manipulated anyone. HE was getting manipulated cause he thought StarClan was talking to him, and since he was young and naive, he didn't know any better. I'm surprised Mothwing doesn't feel any empathy towards him considering she was in a similar position in her younger days.

Even if is's revealed in futur book she had her reasons for behaving like that, that would still be mishandling, cause it would need something pointing out there was something wrong with her and not just a changement in her character for drama purpose like they've already done plenty in the books. If everyone complain that the character abruptly changed, something was done wrong.

I get that at some point the pressure will get to anyone, but still. Plus like Mothwing, and I still do! I love her different view on StarClan and smart thinking, but I just don’t think this is like her?
I agree with everything said, since it makes sense, and are all good reasons. So I greatly hope that this will be fully explained, and whatnot in the next book. I’m probably just biased to Shadowsight because I love him so gosh darn much. I just want an emotional Mothwing and Shadowsight apology so I can love both of these characters being sad together. 😂

The entire medicine cat situation in Darkness Within confused me to the point where it was frustrating.
I've always liked Mothwing, but then she just became a huge jerk in this book.
It's really out character, especially considering the fact that she herself should know how it feels when nobody believes in you.
