My last video I put together a pretty minimal camera rig that I liked for shooting handheld. This time I am making the Sony a7iii into a handheld cinema camera setup. The core of this new setup is recording using the Atomos Ninja V. This unlocks so many features using a mirrorless camera that you just can't get otherwise. I also am loving the new Tilta Nucleus N follow focus system. Check it out and let me know what you think!!

Currently looking into shooting handheld like this without a gimbal again, and I just have to say that this was an EXCELLENT hands on/ usability video. Thank you for shooting more than one scenario. A+ video man
your composition & editing is top-notch my dude
Damn, that 50mm footage in combination with that song, sick. Loving that style
Awesome setup! I’m gunna go build my rig right now! Keep it up
Love the video.. i hate how others just show their rig but dont shot some actual look while using.
The 50 looks so good. I thought a little bit of a longer lens might be too shaky but it worked for those shots
I was surprised too! That stabilized weight makes a big difference
Great vid my man. Love the rig. Looking to beef my set up as well.
Looks awesome Austin. Excellent video, really enjoyed watching. Thanks so much for sharing :)
Adrian Alford Photography thanks so much!!
Thank you for your hard work in this video
Great video! Def setting up my rig close to this...
Realy nice rig, I like the compactness of it all. I am to build something similar but I wonder if the Tilta side focus handle could do a better job and slim it down even further. The Tilta handle powers both the monitor and focus motor, it has a built-in finger wheel to control the Nucleus Nano, start/stop for recording and you can even throw in a Samsung T5 SSD. Thanks for your video!
so nice!
would love something like this but i like using a top handle instead of a side
Its been so fun taking it around, can’t wait to go out and shoot more!!
Super helpful video, thanks for this!
Dang! was really hoping to see you dual wield with the gimbal. lol. Love the channel!!
Snowwood Films that would be intense 😂😂 I’m interested to see if having the ninja on the gimbal would work with the double camera setup though
Awesome dude 👏🏼 almost
Similar setup bro. Happy new year
Happy New Year to you as well!
Loved this mate! Just bought the Nucleaus 👍 great content, love your style 😁
That's awesome!! Thanks so much! Let me know if there are any other video ideas you are interested in
Austin Black will do 👍😁
Awesome setup!
Fantastic video thank you for the help.
Austin, I really loved your cinema setup. Loved the beauty of having LUTs on live display.. brilliant!! Not sure if the focus speed can be controlled, based on the scene. I really love the cinematic grading. I think it was a little too far with the saturation. But nevertheless, I was blown away and loved it!! I'm not a fan of the handhelds, gives me dizzys!! I am so keen on seeing this setupwith a gimble, though. So, if you get a chance, please make one. Thanks a lot!!!
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed it. The handheld look is very much my style. When I go on a gimbal I just like to strip it down to just the camera and cage so I can keep it as light as possible
Have you tried a glide cam? If you like organic then that should be more of your thing than a gimbal. Thanks for this great video!
tilta now makes a handle that has power inside it(lp-6 batteries) has a follow focus wheel on it, and record button... check it out man... it's actually really sick... I can send you a pic of my rig but it's a bit intense now a days.... you are one of the main influencers of my set up but I got rid of the battery because it was annoying to have it. I also added a steadxp+ so I can go hand held all the time but if I want I can make it smooth gimble like later in post...
I just ordered the cage and handle to shoot weddings. I’m sure I will add a monitor and mic. I am very bad with getting stable shots. I was hoping the added weight would help. Now after you said it might be too heavy for weddings you got me thinking
Great video!!
Hello, thanks for the info.
Im wondering if you can make a info video on your set up movie mode.
Also how are you editing your videos.
love the setup. Im curious why not put the handle on the right side so you can have easy access to the focus pull on the left? Dont you lose stability whenever you want to focus since you are letting go of your main handle?
dope rig
Awesome man!
Thanks!
Love the footage bro 👏🏽 was it shot in 4K or 1080p?
First off love the setup! Also the colors were so nice. What picture profile were you using?
I use the EOS Pro HD custom PP!
HELLO Autstin, give us a link to this base plate for mounting focus engine
whats the voltage on the powerbank? I dig your set up. Helped me out while I was building my handheld rig
Great video!!! One little question. where can I watch the Gerald undone tip that you were tallking about?
Amzing Rig!
how to do you setup your sony about his hdmi output setting? and which codec do you use with the atomos when you record?
If you were going to add a video pro mic to this setup where would you put it and which small rig accessory would you use?
just a quick tip, I power my nucleus N with the np f battery on my monitor. there are a few npf battery that have a dc 8.4v output and then you have to worry about one battery less :D
Hi, this might be an old thread but I wonder what kind of cable did you use and whick jack on the Ninja did you plug it in to? Thank you
Thanks for the video man! I bought the Nucleus and built a rig based on yours. Quick question - how long does the focus motor last with your USB battery?
And hello from a fellow Fort Worthian! :)
Ciao! Where is the right link of EXTENDER FOR FOLLOW FOCUS? Thanks a lot
Can you tell me please what kind of equipment you used for the Tilta Nucleus-Nano Wireless Focus Control System, as you mentioned in your video? Would be really nice to make if possible for this Focus Control System maybe an Tutorial Video? So far so good!
I think if you're gonna build out a rig, it has to include external audio.
Yes
Yeah, the sound recorded isn't wonderful..
and a matte box and some rails and a v mount and or an sdi output or a wireless video transmitter or a hollyland this isnt a rig its just a cam in a cage with a ninja v. also whats the point of a rig tutorial without see the rig build in normal speed
@@johnnythunder8382 Thanks for telling that. Same opinion here. Has nothing to do with TV / Broadcast or cinematic production set ups. I am also a big fan of traditional cam work like shoulder or professional Steadicam. Even the additional light and intercom should be included if we talk about pro production business. Not to forget the inputs for a separate location mixer like the SD 442 (at least). Matte Box is essential for filter use. Oh, I forgot, most "filmmakers" do this in the post. I am happy to get to know the old and traditional routines for my productions. I am really not into this modern stuff.
Which picture profile did you use for this video? Which picture profile do you normally shoot in? Great work and excellent review.
How were you able to mount the follow focus's motor with the 15mm rod on the cage??
Cool video
i have a question. How did you attach your focus wheel to the side of your camera? Was it a NATO attachment?
Nice setup What’s the power bank the link isn’t popping up
Which HDMI cable are you using for this setup?
What kind of set up would you recommend for a documentary? I really like the idea of using a small rig with a handle. I'm not worried about the monitor. Also I saw you like the Sony digital shotgun mic. This is the first time I have seen it or heard about it. What would you recommend for a documentary for a on camera mic. I'm on a budget right now of 400 to either get a gimbal and shot gun mic or a small rig cage with a handle like yours and shot gun mic. Thank you
Hello. Can you record from the nucleus wheel via the multi jack / usb cable from the nucleus to the a7iii? I have tried everything it does not work. We cannot control the recording of the camera from the wheel of the nucleus ....
What type of setup would you suggest for doing a wedding?
Car I use this configuration if my lens doesn’t have stabilization?
@Austin Black Where did you get your 90 degree HDMI cable at? It's nice and would complete my build.
love it, would alike to have a top handle and mic tho. can put mic ont hat handle
Jason Lindquist this would definitely be an option. I felt like I didn’t want to add anything else to it, because I felt like this had the most important features. Another option is to mount a mic on the hotshoe mount on the handle
you mentioned you could have someone pull focus because the dial is wireless, do you have a wireless monitor you recommend to make that happen?
are you running a run stop cable or using the record button on the camera?

Quick question: Is there a sort of "docking station" for cameras? I have a lot of things in want to plug into the camera, but Im having an issue where my hand keep hitting some of the stuff I have plugged in as I'm operating the camera I have a handle, but my left hand is still too close to the cords that plug in on that side, causing me to knock some loose or weaken their integrity.
what camera did you used for film? and get a top handheld
Do you have the name of the small battery power bank?
does the added weight help IBIS or are you stabilization in post?
I miss the top handle for the lower shots
Bonjour.
Hey that's Fort Worth!
great rig - needs a handle though ?
i have a setup similar to yours and when i plug in the hdmi cable from the camera to the monitor (feel world f5) the screen on the camera goes black..is there anyway to stop this from happening?
You might try changing the viewfinder from auto to manual...or vice versa.
Would have been nice to see how to put it together
Hey mate, with what you attached the power bank ?
I should not watch this. I should not watch this. I should not watch this.
Bank account: He watched it
shaky vids with internal audio? where is your mic?
what plate/clamp is that?
Super cool set! Bought exactly the same set for my a7r3, however, the Jackery power bank always turn itself off after 10-15 seconds, making it impossible to use the nucleus n on the go. Have you had such issues?
Thanks! Haven’t run in to that yet
Great video! How did u apliedd the Power Bank to the cage??
Good old Velcro
Hey man, rly love your videos :)
Can you please send me a link of a baseplate with rod you use? I realy like your setup and I'm on a way to purchase that kind of baseplate. Thank you, looking forward of.your next vid.
Regards, Luka
That baseplate and rod comes with the Tilta system. You can see it on their website.
yo! i really like the setup and plan to build something similar. could you possibly tell me what the model number of the baseplate with the 15mm rod is? i can't seem to find one like it. thanks!
NM man. i see it comes with the tilta setup.
So dope! Will that set up work for an A7sii?
Luke Syres thanks! You will need a different cage for the a7sii
Nice work 👍 what’s your battery life like?
Do the monitor and camera run off separate batteries?
Thanks
a7iii battery life is pretty good. Monitor runs on a seperate Sony LP
Hello Austin. Amazing rig!!! One thing currently I own a Crane plus and A7 III and I have been using this combo while travelling around. But I find switching between photo and video a pain in the ass with a gimbal. Would this rig be good while travelling instead of a gimbal? Im going to Vietnam for 4 weeks in a month.
Hey Austin, what is the link from this HDMI Cable?
Its the standard Atmos cable I believe.
Love it!
Hey man I just bought a Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4K. Would love to get your thoughts on it. I think you’d love it!
Joe Luis I would love to have an extended test with the BMPCC4K. Funny enough I actually had one preordered but had to back out
Austin Black I’m in TX as well and if I’m ever in Dallas we shoot meet up so you can try it out. I got it all rigged out so I’d be interested to see what you can come up with using it.
I go up to Fort Worth and Dallas a lot to ride dirt bikes with my buddies quite often.
@@joeluis7437 That would be awesome!!
Great video man! One question I got the same setup as U, but I had Issues to Power the tilta nucleus nano, because the Powerbank it is only energy by 5VOLT. Dont U had the same issue???? Pls I Will be grateful if u answer me
Hmmm. I have not run into that issue with the specific power bank that I have.
Show !
Nice setup! How was the power bank mounted?
Good old Velcro!
I can't seem to find the baseplate you are using. Could you please give me the specific model or a link? Thanks!
It’s the ronin-s baseplate comparable with 501 manfrotto heads
Do you mount a shotgun mic on that rig? If so does it capture the ninja v fan noise?
I didn't add one to this rig, but there is room for one. I would hypothesize that you would be okay on fan noise.
Thanks for the video! Question: While using the Atmos Ninja with the A7iii can you see the camera info on the screen while filming in 4k? ISO, Fstop, etc?
I noticed that I couldn’t see my camera screen on 1080 60, anyone else have this problem?
What's the advantage of using an electronic follow focus right next do the lens? Wouldn't it be better to just use a regular follow focus?
I would say the biggest difference is versatility. Being able to mount it basically wherever you want is really handy!
It's great to transition to gimbal stuff or having a second focus puller.
do you ever black pro-mist filters??
You are reading my mind!! That’s something I’ve been considering purchasing for a while. I don’t have any currently. Armando Ferreira has a great video on 4x4 filters
WHEN U SHOOT WITH THE SIGMA 24MM, DO U USE THE IMAGE STABILIZATION TO GET THAT QUALITY?
Yes! I have my IBIS turned on
Can the focus ring be used to control zoom instead?
Hello, did you find out about this? Thanks
Awesome!
Just discovered your channel.
Question:
What is your favorite setup for weddings. I don’t do that kind of work, but have a nephew’s wedding coming up...
I have a couple videos about weddings where I go through different setups. You should check out the "dual wielding a7iii's" video!
great video man, one question, is that smallrig works for A7SII to?
You’ll need a different cage for the a7sii
@@AustinBlackvideo thank U very much, great video and very nice rig u made, it's awesome, can u check my reel?
Do you keep one A7iii for a rig setup and another A7iii for gimbal and photo work? Would it be a pain to cage an A7iii and use it for gimbal work?
Nahh the cage isn't much of a hinderance on the ronin s
all of the other attachments can be easily taken off
Hi Austin,
What’s the name of the cinematographer you mention at the beginning of this video?
Thanx!
Edwin
Gerald Undone
@@freddaus5253 Thanx!
cool rig.. but mic??
Can you tell me power bank name ? Cuz that link already expired.
아드리아주 Google “Jackery mini portable charger” I’m almost positive that’s what he’s using!
Hi! that quick release for the nucleus N, it comes with the kit?? or U had to bought it sepparate ??? greetings from chile !
Yes! It comes with it. I ordered an extra one for the ronin though
@@AustinBlackvideo thanks! Very friendly of U. I was thinking buy a similar rig, for my sony. But I got scared that anytime can release the New a7siii :(
link to that hdmi cord tho lol
CIMEMA RIG 😄
Power the Tilta follow focus from the screen using a 6V-to-microUSB, ya dingus.
iComplainer fitting name 😂 but solid idea
Is your lens a focus by wire lens? If so how can you use a follow focus on it?
Sigma uses a different focus system than Sony
@@AustinBlackvideo Oh didn't notice the lens wasn't sony haha, thanks!
what bag are you using?can you tell me?
It's an old bag from fossil lol. I have it make-shifted as a camera bag.
the add for this device claims "Eliminate your camera's internal compression and time limits - record up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR video direct from your camera's sensor over HDMI 2. 0. Teamed with a 1TB Atom SSD mini you can now achieve up to 150 minutes of 4K recording on a single drive!" but will this record 4k 60fps on the sony a7rII even though that camera can only record 4k at 30FPS?? and how can it record 10bit from that camera when that camera only outputs 8-bit 4.2.0??
This does NOT allow you to record 4k 60 on these cameras. The only benefit in terms of quality is 4.2.2 vs 4.2.0. The other benefits ares things like motoring, record limits, etc
