Living On $75K A Year In Los Angeles | Millennial Money

- Isaac Diaz, 40, lives in Los Angeles, California, and earns $75,000 a year as a video producer. He grew up without much guidance on money management, teaching himself as he matured. He's since learned how to balance spending vs saving, and manage previous debt he accrued.
This is an installment of CNBC Make It's Millennial Money series, which profiles people across the globe and details how they earn, spend and save their money.
Read more about about Isaac's budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2Sr2wo7
Isaac Diaz turned 40 last month, but his big birthday getaway didn’t exactly go as planned. That was OK - Diaz is no stranger to making the best of any situation.
Diaz took time off from his busy job as a video producer to relax and unwind in Puerto Rico. But when he broke up with his girlfriend mid-trip, he spent the majority of his birthday flying home to Los Angeles. His birthday dinner was a beer and an overpriced chicken club sandwich.
“I was just sitting there thinking, ‘This was not what I envisioned turning 40 would be,’” he says with a laugh.
A few days later, his family and friends threw him a big backyard bash, which he says just goes to show that there are positives in every situation.
Finding those silver linings has been an important lesson for Diaz, who spent years hustling at freelance gigs. He didn’t land a stable, full-time staff position that he genuinely loved until 2019. Now Diaz earns about $70,000 a year from his job as a video producer at a television network, as well as about $5,000 a year from side projects and freelance gigs.
“It isn’t a ton of money, but it’s enough to not be broke,” he says.
Though he thought he’d be married with kids and own a home by now, Diaz has made his peace with where he is. And that extends to his finances, which he says aren’t perfect. Although Diaz contributes to his 401(k) and saves $175 from every paycheck, he still feels behind, in part, because he spent years paying off credit card debt that he racked up starting in college.
“I feel like I should have things together, but I don’t have it all together and I’m learning that that’s OK. Being 40 doesn’t mean that you have to be perfect. Being 40 doesn’t mean that you have to have all those things that you thought you needed together,” he says.
How he makes his monthly budget work
While his income is pretty steady these days, Diaz’s expenses are currently in flux, thanks to the recent breakup. He lived with his ex, so he’s planning to stay with family and friends this summer while he looks for a new place.
To show how Diaz typically spends his money, here’s a look at his expenses as of April 2021:
Rent and utilities: $1,528 (includes Wi-Fi and utilities)
Car expenses: $664 ($371 for car payment, $191 for gas and $26 for DMV costs)
Savings and investments: $619
Food: $513 ($167 for groceries, $346 for dining out)
Insurance and therapy: $220 (includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as monthly therapy sessions)
Household expenses: $91
Monthly cost of his season tickets for the L.A. Chargers: $75
Student loans: $69 (He has about $6,300 total left to pay.)
Subscriptions: $45 (includes Amazon Prime, Costco, Hulu, Netflix, SiriusXM and Tidal)
Gym: $31
Phone: $30 (Diaz is on a family plan.)
After working to pay down credit card debt when he was younger, Diaz says he now makes it a priority to keep his monthly expenses under control. He currently has no credit card debt and is in the midst of paying off the loan for his 2013 Acura TSX, which has about a $4,999 balance remaining as of April.
Although Diaz lives within his means, he makes room to spend on experiences, including food and travel. (He put most of his travel plans on hold during the pandemic but expects to plan a trip soon.) Over the years, he’s traveled to European cities such as London and Paris, as well as countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Thailand.
Diaz is also a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Chargers. He splits the annual $2,704 cost of season tickets, as well as the cost of traveling to a few away games, with two of his friends. “It’s definitely a priority for me,” Diaz says. “We have such a great time, we make amazing memories and we travel the country to see other football stadiums.”

How can I be interviewed???
Love to see an executive assistant in nyc interviewed
Can we see some people not in big cities maybe in some small towns or something
Edit: they don’t have to be small towns but maybe small cities that aren’t that well known like Amarillo tx, Gainesville fl, Portland Maine, Little Rock Arkansas, etc
ContextLogic will bypas Etsy

Love that you guys are featuring a man who doesn't have a six figure salary, is living in an expensive city, and has had some trials and tribulations in his career! Refreshing to see this in contrast to the other videos with all highly successful people!
He needs to get out of LA. Too expensive.
@@mesalouis8976 Agreed!
@10m30 it’s too expensive, so..
@10m30 Exactly. If he wants to really make headway in his career LA is where he should be.
I agree. California is very expensive. As a person of color, we are not engrained with financial planning for the golden years. I could not imagine of getting older until age catches up with you.
His story probably represents a big majority of people out there. Glad to see him taking everything in stride and keeping his head up. Wish him all the best.
This is by far one of my most favorite episodes. I love his honesty and transparency.

This is the first one of these that has literally made me cry. This dude is so genuine and accepting of his own path seemingly without shame or regrets. When he talked about his mom encouraging him and then losing her I was fully 😭. I’m just getting my head around saving for retirement at 52, and I’m a freelancer, and I feel like I am playing catch up to the max. I wanna incorporate some of this guys energy. It’s so much easier to move forward when I am not feeling paralyzed by wishing I had started earlier. Thanks for this one.
Similar circumstances and age here, when I started saving toward retirement. I did a mix of conservative and aggressive investing by opening an IRA first and maxing that out, then buying cryptocurrencies. I did a ridiculous amount of research on each before moving forward, but this approach seems to be paying off four years later. No, I'm not expecting to get rich, but I do feel like I can avoid being really poor at 70.
I think the trick is not in tying to incorporate somebody else's energy, but to establish your goals. Concretize them by writing them down. And do the homework. You also have to be honest and realistic with yourself about how much you can invest (and realistic about your growth timeline). But mostly, you have to START. A little at a time is cool. Get your feet wet.
Hope this helps.
Same here! I really enjoyed his story and I can definitely relate ☺️👏🏾
This was super inspiring. Can we get more stories like this, please? His positive attitude and resilience to reach financial stability and success is admirable.
I wanna live in a sunny place like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or in Arizona, but... there is also something called payments.
@@0.705 Trust me, you don't want to live in LA or SF.
100% agree. So realistic.
Love his honesty. This is one realistic episode that shows that life doesn't always go as planned. The important thing is he's heading in the right direction. Wishing him all the best!
As an older millennial, I really appreciate seeing someone is not 23 and making 6 figures. Isaac is super relatable, it is so important for millennials and POC's to learn more about investing!
What’s crazy is I’m a older millennial as well (33) and where I am from/ live it’s more common to see ppl of that age making 6 figure. It’s the norm. I can honestly say I don’t know many ppl (or any) in general making under 6 figures.
I like this guy! Life isn’t a straight line. Thanks for sharing his story
I love that CNBC is making videos on people who don’t make a 6-figure salary or growing a real estate empire. This man is very confident with his money and he has a clear vision with his future. He is unknowingly inspiring people and me to become successful, be responsible, and have a spending/savings plan.
They've always been making videos with average incomes as well. Everyone just addresses the higher income videos like it's an insult to their personal lives. Lol
@THAT_ONE_KID very original, little loser
Yes, more of these types of stories please! Not saying having a business owner/youtuber who makes 50k a month isn't fun to watch but i want to someone i can relate to more.
This is as honest as it gets. Love the transparency. This definitely motivates me to take action on specific areas of my life

Wow, this video couldn't have come at a better time. I've been freelancing for 16 years and I just turned 36 and my work has dried up, I'm a freelance copywriter and editor. His story about just pushing on is something I needed to hear. Thank you, Isaac!

This is so different from social media, it's honest. This is how most people actually live. The fake Instagram, RUclipsrs, etc. that portray the perfect life of happiness and wealth actually still live like this or worse off.
Finally something relatable. I am back to living with my parents and starting over after a divorce. This spoke to my heart.
I was there almost 2 years ago. Life is much better now. Just stay humble and have forgiveness for yourself and others. Bitterness can reside on both sides whether you initiated the divorce or got blindsided. But harboring that bitterness doesn’t help. Love and forgive. Hoping the best for you.

Easily one of my favorite episodes. I appreciate that dude is keeping his head up in spite of some challenging situations. His resilience is going to take him very far, that’s clear to me.
Once you present them with opportunities they forget about the freedom they've lost, most people get too addicted to their paychecks they fear without it securities they wouldn't. And that's when financial freedom becomes difficult to attain
Aimlessness seems to be more common among people rather than purposeful things, many folks would prefer to lavish their money instead of rejuvenating their wallets and that's a very bad way to build wealth. Thanks to this channel I've grown an addiction for passive incomes, and I've figured that 100% reliance on salary alone isn't lucrative enough to attain wealth
It sounds even more reaffirming knowing that I'm earning fat profits from my investments in stocks, crypto, real estates and the foreign exchange markets, I'm planning to retire in the month of December at 40 and already I've been able to build a 6figure portfolio from compounded gains in the financjal markets, currently I'm passively earning about $55k monthly over long term investments, in general knowledge an investments truly pays the best interest

Good for him for changing his financial outlook and sorry that his mom passed away. My suggestion would be to try and maxed out the IRA and to knock out the car payment.
With inflation rates being high, I wouldn't rush to pay off low interest loans like a car or student loans. Especially at those balances. He is better off maxing out an IRA and saving up for a apt.
He would make more money investing in cryptocurrencies than a IRA or 401k
I love his attitude. He's been through ups and downs, but he's taking it one step at a time and working to better himself instead of compare against others, great video and story!

Glad to see this story. This guy is enjoying his life and trying to make it better everyday and learning lessons on the way. Keep it up Isaac!
Very shocked no one is talking about how young he looks. We all saw that FIRE couple who is allegedly younger than him but look old enough to be his parents....
With 1k in an IRA & saving $350 a month @ 40 he won't be part of FIRE anytime soon.
This comment seems unnecessary. Yes he looks very young and that’s a compliment and you could’ve stopped there but instead you had to knock down the FIRE couple for no reason.
@@ellikaplan322 It's true though. I wonder why you're mad about it.💀

Love the fact that he said, "I feel like I should have the things together, but I don't have it all together. But, that's ok." He just released a lot of pressure for a lot of people; and he looks great for his age! Would not have thought he is 40.

A real Los Angeles living episodes this is most of Los Angeles unfortunately
Peter Pan syndrome is real there. I’m 34 and still figuring things out in LA.
It doesn’t have to be that way for him. He makes decent money ($75k) and if he cuts more of his expenses like the car payment he will have $7k a year after he finishes paying it off. If you add that with the other $7k that he saves every year, that’s $14k in one year! In 5 years he will have saved $70k!
If he did this sooner he would’ve had at least one multi family property in the City he grew up in! I know plenty of people who did what he wants to do with less money, and in his age group. But much respect to him!

I love these videos so much!!! Gives me perspective and hope.
I liked this episode because it was more “real”! I’m 36 and I make about the same as him, this is middle-class America 🇺🇸 good attitude!!
I agree and I like the guy. But I don’t think he’s middle class he’s definitely working class because he doesn’t have his own place. I wish him luck
Ok I mean I don’t have my own place either. Do you know how expensive it is to live in San Francisco and Los Angeles? Rent here is $2,000 a month minimum. I’m a marketing manager at a tech company and I can’t even afford my own apartment. I have roommates. I consider myself middle class, working class maybe but the cost of living is high in SF & LA
@@Audreylin29 yes that’s basically my point. Adjusted for cost of living he’s working class. He is not building much wealth. I love LA and the guy is super likable but financially he can’t really afford where he lives with what he makes
It’s rough living in LA making anything less than $100K. Rents for a 1BR are easily $2K/month even in bad neighborhoods. Taxes and gas prices are also ridiculously high.
I agree it is rough here in the LA area even Southern California if you don't make at least $100k a year or fortunate to have somewhere cheap to live i.e. family, roommates or rent controlled apartments then its hard to live.
And even if you do make $100k you will barely make it, its insanely expensive

@@kevinb8881 don’t believe that. If you are willing to sacrifice you $8 Starbucks run everyday and a couple of other luxuries for a year or 2 you will be fine. People make the mistake of moving here and spend a lot of money trying to look like they’re doing better than they are (cars, clothes, living arrangements, going out, etc).
@@Cmorrison626 Ok, ok, maybe $115K in LA, lol, but definitely $125K in San Francisco, or Vancouver, BC, Canada, you know, the peninsula cities, where we ALL know cost of living is much higher in both these cities!!!

He actually looks really young for being 40. Hoping I look the same in about 6 years time haha.

Very honest and informative video. Big respect for Isaac Diaz for sharing part of his life and finances.
Most realistic and inspirational story. Thanks for sharing!
He seems like such a nice and cool man
This guy took so many Ls but the important part is to always get back up!
Isaac, you are moving in the right direction, keep going!
This story is so real, much appreciate Isaac sharing his story. I'm sure he'll continue his progress as long as he continues keeping the positive attitude up!
That’s so rough he have to move back in with his mom in his 30s. Good luck to him, I wish him the best!
He said he was 35
@DragonballxNaruto that's such a ridiculous way of phrasing it and am from a country where it's completely ok with multiple generations living under the same roof and where caring for aging parents is widely expected. But am also an American so I also believe that you should find your own independence away from your parents. That's not abandonment, that's growing up. Also, I lived with with my mother until my mid 20s and the moment i started working i contributed to the rent. Now that's something that needs to be looked down on: leeching kids that confuse living with parents to living rent free.
@DragonballxNaruto exactly... In my country theres even grandkids and parents that are all still living in the grandparents house, and they live a pretty happy life together. Nobody looks down upon them or anything of that sort.
I had that happen to me, really depressing episode in my life even though i love my parents.
@@apark8787 I lived with my parents for a time as well and I have a good relationship with them but there’s just something different about having your own place.
Great job, Isaac! Keep it up!!

Wow so honest and positive keep your head up bro!
Isaac you’re the man. Loved this video
Love this story you will succeed .🙏🙏🙏
No disrespect to this guy at all, I can see he's trying and has shown us an honest account of how hard life can be. But, it definitely does make me feel alot better about where I'm at at 32 and thankful that I learned about finances in my early 20s. Just another example of why parents and schools really need to start teaching kids these financial lessons before they have to learn it themselves later on.
Yup, i could have been a millionaire by now if I knew basic investing and financial ideas at 18. My parents idea of raising was "Just get a degree, doesn't matter how much or in what." Yeah, that bad
Depends on the country you live in too. If you live in a country where poverty is the norm, it would be difficult for anyone to get out. The Phillipines as an example. My sister in law came to America to be “successful” with a high paying job. She sends money, clothes, and food every few months back home. I know other Filipinos that do the same. It’s a normal environment for the Phillipines. Only a few countries like the “western” countries, US, England, Russia are able to sustain a viable economy so that anyone in poverty can rise above their environment much easier than poor countries.
@@taoist32 true, but all these videos and most of the viewers are US/Canada, we all have the opportunity to be financially independent. However, how to achieve that is usually glossed over or not even mentioned early on in life, which is a shame because a kid fresh out of highschool with that knowledge has alot better chance of setting themselves and their family up for life. Starting early is one of the most important factors and most people don't learn until they are 30+ and have already dug themselves into a hole.
Parents can’t teach what they don’t know. Millennials have all of the information they need a click or two away.
Good man. Keeping it real and looking ahead with a positive outlook. That’s the way to be and to lead a life. Life presents itself with several up’s and downs, how one navigates it through will ultimately see the meaning and purpose through it all. All the very best to him👏🏻👏🏻
Finally starting to get good videos on this series
