The glider in this clip is a Birdman Hawk, and the real flier is the Birdman test and development pilot Dave Raymond. The takeoff from the tower was actually very dodgy, as he had to go when it suited the needs of the director, Ken Russell, and not the needs of the pilot! Ken was interested in the light, and visual attractiveness of the shot, not the wind speed and direction... Hence the glider diving quite a bit on takeoff. Afterwards, this glider - signed on the leading edge by Daltrey - ended up in Scotland, where I flew it a few times...
I wish Roger would’ve sang this on the original Tommy album. It’s coming from the point of ‘Tommy’ and also, his voice is so darn good on this song. He absolutely kills it! It’s great to have both versions I suppose.
Yeah this is a consequence of the confused nature of the original album's development--initially it was decided that Townshend would sing the songs sung from Tommy's POV (hence him singing "Sensation" and the "See Me, Feel Me" portion of "Go To the Mirror") but then it shifted towards Daltrey singing Tommy's POV as well as Mrs. Walker's; so the final album ends up pretty confused, and live performances depend more on who needs a vocal break for a given song
I recently showed this film to someone who never seen it before. Of all the overwhelming scenes, he was blown away by this particular one. I also recently discovered the "dancing mods" are doing Northern Soul steps, which was HOT in 1975 England
I'm 53 and watched a lot of movies from The 30s to The 70s. I was at a drive-in in 1975 that had two screens. I was promised to see "Tommy" but my sister and brother-in-law opted for "Walking Tall : Part 2". I finally saw Tommy in 1981 at a drive-in twice. Both times with "Heavy Metal".
The young guy in the centre of the vid ( the bike with gold forks at 1:00) is Young Dick Allen, son of the President of NECBA at the time, who went on to found the SDMCC. Brilliant movie, brilliant video clip, thanks for uploading it.
How Tommy got the bikers to stop fighting and dance together seems to be a film screen miracle, just like when Luke Skywalker impassioned Darth Vader in ROTJ.
The Teddy Boys are the ones with the 50's hairdos and clothes, right? Sorry, I'm American, I have heard of Teddy Boys but not really sure what they are.
Yep, the Teds or Teddy Boys were the 50's types. similar to greasers in America. There were still a lot around even in the 1970's. The original rockers that we had here in the 50's/early 60's here, rode British motorbikes and were probably more similar to American greasers in style though.
Teddy Boys were very tough guys. They loved to administer beatings. I was rather impressed with the way the Teddy Boys were dancing like that. The one that was on his hands and feet and flipped over looked like he was inventing break dancing. I was a greaser punk 20 years ago and my American friends said that looked like a Teddy Boy but I hadn't adopted the Edwardian style of dress.
Hells Angel type patch clubs used to fight each other and rip off each others colours, back in those days. Went on a lot. Nothing to do with mods and rockers, there's not a mod in sight, and these were patch club bikers rather than the ton up boy rockers of the 1960's...
My dad was the local copper , he gave the angels a lot of hassle, not that they did anything wrong , great bunch of lads , he was just a tosser , sorry everyone .
My dad was one of the bikers in the fight scene....rip dad xx
omg 😔
Fuckin' A ....I love this movie.....the same director did Altered States...if I'm correct?
My friend Jay dug the Rock a Billy vatos....he's a shit kicker....
H.A.s and the A.O.A. having a rumble....Tommy brokers the peace.
it looked a rough fight scene!!
The most important rock opera of all time.
Daltry on a handglider, singing this track- beats anything Chuck Norris could ever do...
Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he's never cried.
@@RVBOY2 LMAO I love it!

@jamiegustkey2573 - I think this is perhaps the boldest and likely most courageous thing I have seen on the Internet.

...thank you for intriguing tidbit...!
I saw 'Tommy' in '75 at 17, 63 now, but don't remember these scenes in the film. Please clarify, thank you.
Those bikers caused so much mayhem that they later had to be taught a lesson by the Mods in QUADROPHINIA!
thats Rockers not hells angels, also in the real world the Rockers won in the end, I know I was one
Some of us old Hippies never die I'm 60 still Rocking.!!!!
The Who were the only group in all of Rock history that could have pulled this off.
Teddy boy breakdancing at 3:40. Time travel.
They invented that style of dancing. I knew one who used to dance like that.
Roger Daltrey singing while flying a hangglider? YES!
My ex-wife screaching while swinging from the chandelier.
NO!
I wish Roger would’ve sang this on the original Tommy album. It’s coming from the point of ‘Tommy’ and also, his voice is so darn good on this song. He absolutely kills it! It’s great to have both versions I suppose.
I share your opinion, mate.🤝 That's true. 👍

For sure
Another day in England..👍😳
Roger Daltrey does have a gorgeous body, can't believe he is now nearly 71!
and now more than 80 years old
Sunderlands "Black Angels Motorcycle Club" appeared in this scene from Tommy.
Great movie loved my 3 years in the black angels over 46 years now
Singing while hang gliding is on my bucket list.
This is the only song you should sing if you do.
...check out "USHPA" (Us hang gliding / paragliding association) for list of schools, instructors etc.
I love guitar in 2:07!! Beautiful musical phrase.
Agree🤝 I also like that playing. 👍
...I can strongly identify with this legendary work of music art, as I am a hang glider pilot.

didn't see any mods in this video, saw hells angels and Teddy Boys.
3:00 best sideburns you'll ever see
Roger Daltrey is a sensation!! My favourite movie. ❤️
For me this just never gets old.
1:46 for me the most impressive scene of the whole film

@@5jerry1 the reaction of the guy to Tommy on the glider

So me and my sis accidentally watched this and it became our favorite fuken movie were in our 30s we love older movies

This movie is an absolute classic musically, and when Jack Nicholson sings you a song, it puts the movie on another level lol
Well that de-escalated quickly...

Thanks for your comment, windymiller7 :)
Is dick still alive
Not so young now, nearly 70!!! I've been living in Brazil for the last 20 years. I could write a book about that scene in the film.
None of us are getting any younger! Write the book! @@milkcartonmagic6316
3:33 Is that an early form of break dancing?
Guy shows up and bikers start dancing.
I could not stop laughing at this scene when I was tripping last night
it's soooooooooooo 1970's isn't it, all is missing is space hoppers and chopper bikes🙃
Is this how Roger hurt his back- so Brave
I'm not sure about his back, but Daltrey did say his hang glider came down in a nettle field... ouch!
How Tommy got the bikers to stop fighting and dance together seems to be a film screen miracle, just like when Luke Skywalker impassioned Darth Vader in ROTJ.
The dancing reminds me Rocky Horror
The Teds seemed to die a death when Russ Abbot started doing his Teddy Boy impression on Russ Abbot's Madhouse. Hardly surprising really.. ;-)

Pukka bikers in that scene i spotted a rd350 in there to ❤
the Teddy Boy at 3:11 looks so much like Monty Pythons Michael Palin
Does he?????? Maybe they're related!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So curious why they never played this live whenever they performed Tommy.
Took up too much stage time like Quadrophenia, I guess.
They have played this a fair amount of times in the later years

What are Teddy Boys? I've never heard that term before... That one in red sure can dance!!

Teddy Boys were like pre-cursers to mods. It was a British youth movement in the '50s.
You have just made me feel very very old 😢

A Wizard did it.
