Even The Who’s version was a cover. Sonny Boy Williamson wrote and recorded it in ‘51. But I know what you mean and agree with you wholeheartedly. There’s something a bit special with The Who featuring Eric Clapton and a cameo from Arthur Brown.
@@GrilloTheFlightless Good point! Of course it's a cover... I guess I would have made the same omission with Shakin' all over or Summertime Blues. Watching this again, I'm even beginning to think Tommy might actually be a better movie than I initially thought.

I heard that Arthur Brown was supposed to be singing the whole song, which would have been brilliant -Arthur’s voice with Clapton’s guitar. However, Ken Russel (for reasons known only to himself) didn’t like Arthur Brown and cut him down to a very small part. Pete Townsend, who was a fan of Arthur Brown and pretty much got him his first record deal, fought hard to keep Arthur in the film. If Ken Russel had got his way Arthur wouldn’t have been in it at all.
@@emilyoshiro The bass on that LP was Nick Greenwood, and was produced by Kit Lambert, although I understand that Townsend did make a number of suggestions. There was pressure from the record company to add electric guitar to a number of tracks and Townsend encouraged Crazy World to stick to their guns and not use one. I’ve hears stories that Townsend suggested the use of horns on Fire, but I’ve also heard elsewhere that this was Lamberts idea. Who knows.
Clapton was a pioneer of electric guitar. He's a major figure in the history of popular music, a very good songwriter who can definitely sing, but he wasn't even the best singer in Cream.

there's another version of this song on here and its a semi tone (almost) up from this one. this one is in my opinion the right speed, the other tricky with the guitar to play along with. iain w glasgow

I wish the soundtrack version included Arthur Brown
He brought the fucking thunder on this track!
Arthur Brown is my favorite rock vocalist.
One of the best songs of Clapton and one of the very few improvements over the Who's originals.

But then we wouldn't have had Clapton's beautiful voice
Ken was wrong, though the Clapton Brown colab that resulted is a gift to us all.
