She met her then-future husband, production designer Bo Welch, on this film.
She's iconic!

I just Love Danny Elfman's Musical Score to this!!It fits so perfectly with the tone and atmosphere of the Film!!!You can see why he's Tim Burton's "Go To" music composer!!!!He's absolutely brilliant!!!

8:48 - "Betelgeuse" isn't "spelled weird." Betelgeuse is the name of a red supergiant star in the constellation of Orion, so "Beetlejuice" is actually the weird spelling! I'm fairly certain that the writers of the movie intentionally spelled it that way so that audiences NOT full of astronomy nerds would know how to pronounce it. 🤓
You’re mostly right but it was the studio executives that couldn’t understand it so they wanted the change.

I was going to say as much. Betelgeuse is pronounced like beetle-juice, so I do think that the studio execs pressured for the Beetlejuice spelling to "simplify" the understanding of the pronunciation.
Thank you. I'm actually not an astronomy nerd, but I still remembered learning about the star in high school. I love this movie, so I've watched a few reactions to it, and I'm actually surprised that the vast majority of them seem to have never heard of the star (or maybe forgot it). Then again, I remember absolutely nothing from algebra class, so who knows why Betelgeuse stuck in my brain.
@@PJ818 Actually, I think my high school Earth & Space teacher pronounced it more like Baldwin did (Bayttle- Gice) which I think may be closer to the original German pronunciation. And I'm not sure, but I think he may also have taught us the beetle-juice pronunciation just as a way of remembering it for the test. I guess it worked for me.

funny thing, the Batman fan community absolutely lost it when they announced that "Beetlejuice" would be Batman, we were SO furious, because it seemed like they were gonna "camp" it up again, just like they did with the 60s/70s tv show, and we were extra salty because it just seemed like they were ignoring the fans, but we were all pleasantly surprised with Keatons performance
....and it wouldn't be the last time fandoms got it wrong. Just see Tom Cruise as The Vampire Lestat & Heath Ledger as The Joker.

A not as well known (to the younger crowd that is) Michael Keaton comedy that's a lot of fun is "Mr. Mom."

Katherine O'hara (Delia Deetz) is a goddamn national treasure....been around since the 70's. SCTV is a place to start if wanting more of her comedy
I appreciate her in "After Hours", "A Mighty Wind" and "Schitt's Creek".
Don't forget she was the mom in Home Alone 1 & 2.
She's amazing in Schitt's Creek, which itself is a great show.

I loved the theme of "Found Family", and that family isn't necessarily whom you're biologically related to. Adam and Barbara clearly act as substitute parents for Lydia, who love her like the child they could never have.
I lost my found family.
Jen and TAra are so cute with their simultaneous reactions. You can definitely see that both the girls grew up in the same house with the same comedic sensibilty. Super cute.

In case you missed it, Katherine O'Hara, Delia Deetz, is the mom in the "Home Alone" movies.
A favorite since childhood. One of my fondest memories was watching this on cable, while in a mental hospital, with a lot of other patients. It was a fun bonding experience during a rough time in my life.
My first job was in a movie theater, and this was one of the first films we had. The audiences then acted how you two did, aka “What the heck did we just watch?!” 😂

Michael Keaton became famous from Beetlejuice as a comedic actor. When they announce that he was going to play Batman, the comicbook fandom freaked out and said he was a terrible choice. Now, he is consider an iconic Batman along w/ Christian Bale.
love Bale but MK is still my favorite even though the sequel was average.
Beetlegeuse is a planet, which I heard was supposed to be the original spelling of the movie but was changed to the current spelling to make it easier for the general audience.

Geena Davis also stars in "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) with Samuel L. Jackson. There aren't too many action films with a woman starring. This is one of them.

Ahhh this was just what i needed on my lunch break. I remember seeing his movie in a theater in Korea during the 88 Olympics so cool, good memories.
I loved Gena Davis's scary noises, that was hilarious. No question about it my all time favorite Winona movie.

Juno is my MVP since I had a high school English teacher who was her lol. Always makes me smile and laugh how she scares the football team since she had the same presence.

There is a star called "Betelgeuse" which is pronounced like Beetlejuice. You can actually see it every night right now if you want, it's the (usually) bright red star in the constellation Orion. The name was originally Arabic that Europeans misheard and mispronounced when they learned the name, hence the current pronunciation.
On the show "Community" the name Beetlejuice is mentioned in three separate episodes. On the third time, you can spot Beetlejuice walking around in the background. It's never acknowledged or pointed out, and that is so amusing to me.
I love how the main title character is in the movie for less than 15 minutes.
I told you this was going to be fun. Both of you laughed the whole time! Too cute!!!
Danny Elfman did the amazing score/soundtrack to this movie. And Michael Keaton is just superb in this, literally one of his career highlights.

This is still one of my all time faves.
I was like 4.5-5 years old and my older sister (6.5-7 at the time) wanted to watch Beetlejuice because her friend who got to basically watch whatever she wanted saw it. Since I always wanted to do what my sister did I wanted to watch it too. So my mom let us and it scared me soo bad I couldn’t watch it again for years. I had no idea it was a comedy until I was a teenager.
Betelgeuse is a red super-giant of spectral type M1-2 and one of the largest stars visible to the naked eye. It is pronounced the same as Beetlejuice.
The brothel Beetlejuice was drawn to was called "Dante's Inferno Room", not "panties".

In the show Community, once a season, someone would say "Beetlejuice". In the third season, right after someone says it, a guy in a Beetlejuice costume walks by the window in the background.
_Beetlejuice_ was the movie that sold Warner Brothers on the idea that Michael Keaton could play the Dark Knight. Prior to _Beetlejuice,_ Keaton was known as a comic actor.

Great movie, 100% rewatchable
The story continued in a cartoon series starting mostly Beetlejuice and Lydia. There is a movie sequel planned apparently with Brad Pitt's company behind it as well as Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, but who knows when it will come out.
Everything about this film is PEAK Burton. Original soundtrack, haunting from ghost's perspective, quirky, unpredictable, insane characters, insane set pieces. JUST. MASTERCLASS. 😎

A couple of fun facts. First, The old Ghost with the Most was originally a demon in earlier drafts. Second, those earlier drafts were far darker and included themes that had rape elements toward the Lydia character. Third, at least one of those of dark themes had BG actively go after Lydia.
And forth, it is a common and popular fan theory that Lydia actually died on her way home in the end and doesn't know it, which is why she can suddenly hover and all that in the last few seconds.
This was my first movie that I ever watched, and I was a pretty sick as a baby but my mom told me, I'd stop crying, when ever she put this movie on.
I was in high school when this movie came out, and I had already fallen in love with Winona Ryder from a previous movie Lucas. I loved this so much, and fell even more in love with Winona Ryder. :D
"the frighteners" with micheal j. fox is a great take on ghost stories like this one. a masterpiece!

This was going to be a dark R Rated horror film, but the producers wanted to make it kid friendly.
The script was a lot darker than the final cut of the movie.
My favourite childhood movie...the best one of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton is really amazing..."I am the ghost with the most." 😀The scariest on the scene with snake is that the head is animatronic model. 🙂

I always thought that why Beetlejuice can't say his name himself is because he was cursed that way when a name summoning spell was placed on him and spelt it as Betelgeuse in hoping someone would say it correctly.

@@jenmurrayxo if you haven't seen it yet, Ferris Bueller's Day Off would be a great reaction. Lydia's dad in this plays the evil principal in that and he's great in it. I went back through your catalog and I didn't find a reaction for it. It's a really fun movie.

I read originally, Betelgeuse was in it a lot more. But the movie was a lot darker and more of a proper horror movie. But they didn’t like the rating it would have gotten. So they cut a lot and turned it into a comedy.
Always wondered what the lost souls room was. Love that sequence.
The guy who played the dad in this was also in an extremely quirky movie co-starring Terry Garr (Young Frankenstein) called "Mom and Dad Save the World". They play a middle-aged couple, average in every way. Meanwhile on planet Spengo, populated entirely by idiots, evil overlord Tod, who plans to destroy Earth, spots mom and falls in lust with her. He kidnaps them both, tries to dispose of dad and marry mom. On a planet of idiots, average dad is a brilliant hero. Can he defeat Tod, and save Earth and his wife?
It's been described as Flash Gordon meets Dr. Seuss on an acid trip.
Since you got the quirkiness of Beetlejuice, you might enjoy it. It's one of those people either hate or absolutely love.
Jon Lovitz plays Tod, taking small man complex to the extreme.

Beetlejuice actually deserves the MVP! When Lydia asked for his help, he solved the problem in 10 minutes. Barb and Adam would of been dust if beetlejuice wasn’t there to help. Yes I know Lydia didn’t want to marry him, but it was part of the deal. He made that very clear.
If you like the step mother in this movie (which, how can you not?), that's Catherine O'Hara. She also played the mother in "Home Alone", and in a bunch of Christopher Guest movies...usually as Eugene Levy's wife/girlfriend. And if you ever decide to add TV series to your reactions, she plays Eugene Levy's wife in the award winning series "Schitt's Creek"...which you would absolutely adore.
The father is played by Jeffrey Jones, who had a decent career in the 80s of playing villains ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Howard the Duck", etc) before (rightfully) being blacklisted by Hollywood for being exposed as a pedophile.
"Beetlejuice" was named after the star in the shoulder of the constellation Orion called Betelgeuse (pronounced the same). Studio execs were afraid people wouldn't know how to pronounce the title of the movie or name of the titular character, so the pushed the "Beetlejuice" spelling...citing that it would also add to the grossness of the character.

When this came out at the theater I went and saw it but I was tired as hell. Fell asleep shortly after the death scene and woke up after the movie ended with a fever. But I ended up watching it a few years later and loved it. I'm glad you two enjoyed this movie.

Great reaction, Jen! I loved this too. Interesting you have your own ghost story for your house. I wouldn’t worry, the odd thing here or there is perfect for Halloween! I have not seen our “ghost dog”, my young daughter saw many years ago. But, it makes one wonder if there really are such things!
To really see Michael Keaton shine and really see versatile you should watch 'Mr. Mom' or 'Johnny Dangerously' for a great 80's comedy and then 'Clean and Sober' for a drama, the man was THE MAN in the 80's, great actor, and still is really.

As you and your sister, Tara reacted this classic movie, Tim Burton gave the role of Betelgeuse (Beetlejuice) to Michael Keaton. Then Tim Burton have Keaton for the role as Batman in 1989's Batman. Beetlejuice's sequel is supposed to be filmed with Keaton and Ryder signed on as original cast.

Love seeing you and Tara together, actually together, for these two movie reactions. I love Beetlejuice. One of my favorite films I have been watching over and over for the past thirty years. I just wished there had been a sequel. The 90s cartoon did not do "Beetlejuice" justice. But..as it went..."Batman" 1989 and "Batman Returns" 1992 became top priority for Tim Burton and Michael Keaton. So BJ2 never happened.

Michael Keaton started out as a comedic actor, and did a lot of great comedy movies, the best of which is Mr. Mom.
Catherine O'Hara is great in Best in Show, A mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman. A series of Mockumentaries worth the watch.

This should be fun! Michael Keaton is drop dead funny in this! Some of the effects are a bit strange, but the movie is very surreal. For a really scary recommendation try the movie 'Pumpkinhead'. It stars Lance Hendrickson. (Bishop in Aliens) not a well-known movie, but perfect for Halloween! Nice to have Tara back! Can't wait!

Producers didn't think people would be able to say Betelgeuse right, so they went with Beetlejuice.
A great reaction, Jen and Tara. It's a great fun film for the Halloween season, another comedy horror film from Tim Burton is, 'Dark Shadows'. I recommend another Tim Burton film for after Halloween 'Mars Attacks' which is great fun too in a '50s style Sci-Fi Comedy kind of way. Eric's (E.D. 209) recommendation of 'Pumpkinhead' is a good choice for a Halloween film.

They later made a saturday morning cartoon based on this movie where Beetlejuice is more of a partner in crime with Lydia. Personally I like the cartoon more. They explore much more of the afterlife.
Very cool team up! Winona’s earlier film “Lucas” is a must see. She has a smaller role it’s a great coming of age story with some familiar young actors. Btw the afterlife case worker is Sylvia Sidney, a Hollywood golden age actor. She originally passed the role as it seemed too macabre but later saw the humor in it.

The TV show Community has a great tie-in with this movie. Over the course of three seasons, three people say his name and the 3rd time (a Halloween episode), someone dressed as Beetlejuice walks by in the background.
