Custom AMD RX 6800 XT Strix vs. Nitro+ & Merc Overclocking Recap

- Опубликовано: 27 июл 2024
- We overclocked several AMD RX 6800 XT custom cards, and now we're recapping the stream results. Features ASUS RX 6800 XT Strix, Sapphire Nitro+, & XFX Merc 319.
Sponsor: Crucial Ballistix RAM (Amazon: geni.us/eykEA)
This is a recap of our live overclocking stream the other day. It was fun to work on these AMD cards, especially since we left them stock and didn't put them under extreme cooling. It can be fun to test stuff as is and without modifications, and it's a nice break from the regular LN2 streams. We still need to work towards doing full reviews of these GPUs; please remember that peak performance in overclocking doesn't mean the card is better or worse than the others. A lot more matters, like cooler efficiency, price, sizing and convenience, repairability, and other factors that we cover in our full reviews. This should just be looked at as a recap of a fun stream.
Heads-up: We're heading into a really crazy time of year for us and will need to make a lot of tough choices as to what gets covered and what doesn't. We'd like to hear from you in the comments whether you want us to prioritize partner card reviews, console thermal testing on the Xbox, or just other different content, like cooler/case reviews. Thanks!

Heads-up: We're heading into a really crazy time of year for us and will need to make a lot of tough choices as to what gets covered this month and what doesn't. We'd like to hear from you in the comments whether you want us to prioritize partner card reviews, console thermal testing on the Xbox, cooler/case reviews, or just different content. We want to cover it all, but there will be the usual holiday slowdowns and other factors that limit our capacity a little more than usually. Team members will be taking time off here and there, as you'd expect, and so we need to be more choosy about content coverage. Please let us know what you'd like to see. Thank you!
Console thermal testing is the most fun imo
Do whatever you want and have the time to do for the next content.
It's still long way for me to upgrade and/or buy any hardware anyways, so anything is welcome and appreciated!
The thermal testing on a console is a fresh and interesting content type IMHO.
AIB partner cards, while definitely impossible to acquire now, will provide additional information that I can always use to consider my next purchase or at least my recommendations when my friends and/or family ask on what to get for their next (and first) PC build should the stocks be available.
-Sincerely, a third-worlder.
Please cover the partner cards first, at least I have a slim chance of acquiring one in a few weeks. Consoles are getting scalped to hell in my region.
Cooler case reviews and different content please. Preferably a review on customer support for other brands.

XFX loves their plastic. The other day I took some plastic parts off of an r9 280x xfx card and temps dropped 7-10 degrees.
yeah, should do that with my R9 290X DD 8GB
They learned their mistake from the RX 5000 series backlash but now totally regressed again with the 6000 series...
I also forgot to mention that they put a plastic film ontop of the heatsink cooling the other board components smh
@@CarbonPanther if just all motherboard vendors would drop all their stoopid plastic shrouds covering VRM's then I would be happy... and put good coolers on and not just alu vedges.
@@LiLBitsDK I blame the tempered glass craze for that. Before we turned our computers into garish aquarium replacements it didn't matter what the motherboard or other components looked like as long as they performed well. Heat sinks tended to have a lot of fins and were made to dissipate heat. Now they have been turned into decorations and function is relegated to third or fourth concern after such things as for instance cost.
Partner card reviews are always appreciated- personally I prefer review roundups (hence why I’m watching this video). Put all of the AIB cards in one video just briefly going over thermals, size, strengths and weaknesses of each is my preferred format!

While I really love your case testing methodology, I think that can wait for a while. If you have time, I'd like for you guys to do something like Hardware Unboxed's GPU scaling tests where you select a few CPUs at specific price points and compare how well they do with some GPUs at 1080P and 1440P, or 1440P and 4K. With the new CPUs and GPUs out, it's nice to get an update to reset people's expectations if they buy a new CPU or GPU but keep the other parts in their system, like how much benefit you'll get if you jump from a 5700 to a 6800 but still have a 3600.

If you review AIB 6800 XT cards, just be sure to cover the extraordinary price gouging that's going on vs. MSRP for reference. I don't for a second believe that a slightly better cooler and likely negligible stock OC costs $100+.
The strix 6800XT AIO is $899 at Newegg. If you use the Android app and click on the item you briefly get a flash of the price before it loads the page FYI
Hope to see your review for the Merc soon! because DOUBLE RAGE MODE (rage mode bios via bios switch, then rage mode on the AMD driver.)

The 2020 Disappointment PC is a must! We've all had enough GPU reviews, time for something you guys can have a bit of fun with.
As always, an amazing review. Now that amd has positioned it self at the end of graphic card. Can you make a video of how to stream or record your gameplays on AMD and how it affects performance against nvidia. I used to record my gameplays on nvidia and then upload them to RUclips. So, before move to amd, will be nice to know how to do it and how much performance is lost

Hey, I have a question about safe or better yet optimal GPU memory temperatures.
I'm wondering at what temperature I should aim at keeping my card memory at, which will not degrade the memory staying at that temperature for a long time ( for days on end).
Thanks!
Steve, youre terrific thx
are there any hard mods you can do to remove limitiations on these cards?
also do the thermal testing on the xbox, im wondering if they did a good job (expecting good)
The Sapphire Radeon RX 6800 XT Nitro+, PowerColor's Red Devil and XFX Merc GPU's are requiring an "850 watt minimum" power supply. Nobody has mentioned the fact that these AIB's or 3rd party 6800 XT GPU's are requiring a minimum 850 watt power supply.
because its cap I use a 750 gold rated good quality power supply with my Merc 319 and its great
I think the Xbox Series X/S thermal and noise review would be interesting, given that you already did the PS5. Now I kinda want to see the comparison between them.
As for parter graphic card reviews, I would be more interested in the closer-to-MSRP ones (like the Pulse, Red Dragon, TUF, etc). And I think a wider coverage of models is more relevant in the upcoming mid and low tiers, where there's a bigger chance of AIBs pushing stinkers into the market (like the TUF and Strix 5700XT from Asus).
You know, I'd love to see a video or two about AMD and Intel builds you can actually put together right now ("last gen" is fine), and how they would do in current creation/gaming workflows. Maybe after Cyberpunk 2077 comes out? Would be a good benchmark title to show people they don't need current gen to work and play in today's climate. I guess the one stipulation would be that the prices can't exceed what you'd pay for current gen builds if the current gen build components were readily available.
In Australia, the difference in cost between the Sapphire and Asus LC is more than $500....yeah
Sapphire: $1269

Is this how expensive it is from their msrp, or is it scalped prices? Cause everything that’s better than a 3070 is over a grand 😂
The sapphire Nitro+ BIOS switch is hella clicky. That's nice to see (or hear) as well. But I'd like them to return to the push button design like they did on the Nitro+ Rx 480 (or maybe it was another card, can't quite remember. The colour of the button was orange ish and red ish).
I think prioritizing cooler and case reviews would be best considering the amount of data we have on existing GPUs. Generally speaking we can ballpark partner cards, and exact data can wait until there's actually stock to purchase with the gained knowledge.
Not only would coolers and cases be available, but it would be a nice break from the silicon saturation we've had recently. Console thermal testing would be a close second, and as always any "other" content you'd want to do would be welcome.
Hey Steve, any idea when the medium mod mats will be back in stock?
Hi Steve. (Bye steve, i'm going to bed)
@gamer nexus, great content as usual! I am just curious if you ever released your methodology on how you achieved those overlcocks on the XFX Merc 319? I have that same card and can't even get close to the 2700min-2800max mhz. I know every card is different but I was just curious if you could shed some insight - did you play with the bios switch on the physical card? I haven't tried that yet. Thanks!
I use timespy on a loop for stability testing mine. My merc 6800xt gets 10925 portroyal, 4000 speedway, 21585 timespy graphics score. Tune is core-min 500mhz core max 2725mhz voltage-980mv mem-2150mhz fast timings, max power slider with fans at 70%. Also, I had to use igor labs mpt to allow another 10% power to the core/board
I am really interested in the comparison between the XFX and the Powercolor cards, those are usually the higher-end AMD GPUs available here in Brazil. I'm still running an XFX RX480 GTR that buildzoid labeled the PCB as "Not shit" and so far, it was great card, especially for its price. Overclocked decently, great thermals, quiet card and the fans are easily replaceable not even requiring screws.
Is there any possibility for you guy to make a custom BIOS for the AMD card(s) to OC them further? or is it mainly a GPU limitation?
As a former ATi RAGE 128 Xpert owner I'm feeling weird to see a nice smol throwback being treated so harshly. But hell those "RAGE mode" edits are fun.
Would appreciate reviews of the XFX Merc and Sapphire Nitro+ cards since I'm ready to pull the trigger as soon as one arrives in my country
this was 10 months ago but I LOVE my Merc. I'm sure the Nitro+ is great too I just prefer the look of the XFX and it performs great and is silent
Please get in more case reviews, GN is like the only one who does them anymore, and you actually test them vs just saying whether its pretty or not and calling it a review
Dammit, Im watching this video, and testing my ram on what should be stable settings and your "take 2" sound @ 0:18 is the same sound my ram test (Karhu) makes when it finds an error and I had a mini heart attack that I was going to have to re-do all my timings
will you bios flash 6800xt with 6900xt bios when you can get that bios?
Guys ... the world is not ending because you can't buy a GPU. I've been trying since release of the 3080 to get one for a decent price, failing every time. It's frustrating with Cyberpunk coming on the 10th and the coming Christmas Holidays, I get it.
But GN reviewing cards is still a good thing. Once prices will normalize again (and seeing the 3060ti stock lasting, they might) we have all the information we need to buy just the model that is best/we need. I would rather have them show me which cards are good and which once are duds than complain about seeing something I can't buy right now.
I can't buy that car I see on Jay Leno's Garage either but it is still nice to watch :P
Have I missed a video or something? Why are all these cards being overclocked when they haven't even been reviewed at stock yet?

I presume that when it comes to AMD video card reviews, the Sapphire Nitro+ will most likely be one of the cards that gets its own review. Since, generally speaking, you don't usually get that much more premium quality than Sapphire. Like, I'm not saying that's the case or it will turn out to be the best of the best. But, going by reputation, that's the one that's the most likely to be targeted for purchase by people that want a really nice AMD card.

Does Steve ever address the 1150mv voltage limit for these cards? Isn't that the real limitation on these GPUs? I feel like 2700-2800mhz would be totally achievable at 1.22v on the Strix.
We now know where all the 6800’s are at
CAn that Strix card be attached to another AIO radiator, or another resevoir, or is it a permanent/proprietary attachment?

Please can someone tell me how stable the drivers are for these cards. I had an rtx 3080 in my cart yesterday but didn't pull the trigger. Now I'm regretting it after seeing threads on reddit about flickers and black screens.
Isn't the Red Devil on this vid the Limited Ed vers ?, if it's the one from the earlier review vid it is, that one is dearer than the standard Red Devil and Red Dragon, I'm not sure on the clock speeds though as I can only find speed for the Limited ed, I wonder if the AIBs have all sent reviewers the top model they do, meaning we get reviews and scores only to find the cards we buy are slower, but won't know unless we benchmark them aswell.

I recently sold my RTX 3070 FHR card for nearly double what I paid for it to a miner and purchased the ROG STRIX 6800 liquid cooled for not a lot more cash... love this card!!
I've noticed a lot of AMD cards come with BIOS switches due to the fact that a Mac user will be more likely to buy said card if it has one. Since Apple only supports AMD (for now) it's common to see one BIOS setting work natively for Apple's hardware. For example, plug in an AMD card that's "Windows only", boot the Mac and the display won't show anything until the system in completely logged in. Not good considering that Apple's security File Vault requires a user to log in before graphics drivers are fully loaded. Use an AMD card with compatible Mac BIOS and the same Mac will start up and show the Apple logo as well as progress bars and login credential screen. Obviously, this is only for a very small userbase. But if you have a Mac Pro or Mac with eGPU... or hackintosh... being able to switch between a Windows BIOS and a Mac BIOS is a must.
