    Every part of trucking has BS to deal with. I can sit here and make a list of all the BS you deal with as a trailer owner. Maintenance costs, sitting at shoppers for hours or days even, brokers never paying detention. I do power only and have only used a load out a handful of times in 2 years. I make 10-14k per week. No part of trucking ever goes perfectly.

      I speak with a lot of people and some do make good money with Power Only. I'm glad you're doing well.
      Most of the time, when we get into the details, it comes out that they run regional, barely put on any miles, and don't much at all.
      Please keep in mind that PO slows down during the winter and this is exactly what we're seeing now.
      Again, I'm glad you're doing well but for most people, this is not their experience. There's a reason why as a whole PO is nowhere near as profitable as having a trailer.

    I do power only, but I only move trailers. I won't do load outs. Now if a trailer is preloaded, I do those. But it's pick it up, and drop it off. That's it.
    All trailers have certain rules. If it can't pass a pretrip inspection, I'm not moving it. Period. Shippers pays for all flats and repairs. I charge a fee for temp tags, and it must transport empty. No load on a temp tag. There are more rules, but you get the ideal.

      @theundercoverboss2020 as I've mentioned in a reply to your other comment, power only is a very different type of market. While some people were able to do the above somewhat, it's mostly not possible and especially not during the winter time or during a time with a trailer shortage. I've chatted with a man here from another one of our videos and after a while we found out he only runs a few days a week, regionally, barely hits any miles, and hardly makes any money. But of course he neglected to mention any of this at first.

    Power only has its benefits. I own my own trailer and if I'm not working it, I don't have to pay for repairs. Plus, you don't have to worry about dock time, which can take you from 2 to 4 hours to be unloaded. Bobtailing isn't bad, it's better than deadheading with your own trailer. Especially in the wind!

    Doing load outs can be a risk. We don't typically do load out for that reason. But being a power only company that just turned a year old we have done fairly well. If your managing your finances and work hard there is no reason to fail. In our first year we are now up to four trucks, three driver's, grossed over $500,000 and half of that was done with my truck. But we have high standards and do jobs that others won't do. Mostly touch freight. The market is there but you got to get out of the dock to dock mindset. Be willing and able to do things others won't do. But most importantly, make sure to loop God into the equation and follow His lead. He can and will start you in the right direction.

      Glad to hear you're doing well guys! Power only is certainly not for everyone but like with anything, the money is there if you look for it and get creative. At the peak of the market we had many PO carriers who did very well.
      I hope you'll get yourself some trailers as this market won't last. PO as well as flatbed and step deck trailers will be hit the hardest. I'd recommend some dry vans that you get vented. You might've done well as a PO because of the inflated freight rates which will come down. Please call us if you're looking to expand further and need help. • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад

      Exactly, sometimes you can have a trailer for a longer period of time. Sometimes you can negotiate, sometimes there are penalties, but most of the time they're for 7 days or so. When dealing from a truck dispatch service aspect, we simply cannot count on it. Too many problems, too much deadhead, too much of a hit on the rate, and you constantly have to be a sniper. It's impossible when running with lots of trucks and drivers. I can see how it could work for you if you operate one or two trucks, but imagine doing this with hundreds.

  • @HydrogenAgent129
    @HydrogenAgent129 3 года назад +7

    Well loadouts I've had for two or three weeks and I usually tell the broker you need to be flexible with me because I'm not going to guarantee it in a week I want to use that trailer for at least 2 weeks and it might even turn into 3 weeks if you're okay with that then I'll take the trailer but if not I'll find another broker

    • @AFTDispatch

    He's right if one does power only if one does them only via Load Outs, which is all he focuses on. Truly a foolish way to try and stay above water. There are plenty of opportunities to do Power Only that do not require getting/using a load-out trailer. I've been doing power only loads for 2 years and have made good bank on them and never once did I have to do it under a load-out nor would I entertain such an idea. This video reeks of a one-way scare pitch to not do power only because one has to do it using a load-out. Yes, it is one way to do a power only, though not highly recommended for the reasons he states however there are plenty of other Power Only options. Summarizing the above video: I call BS for the deliberate lack of information related to all possible options for Power Only loads.

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  2 года назад

      We don't only run load outs. We also run tow aways. Plus how many miles do you run, what areas, and what's been your rate. 9 out of 10 people I speak with who speak highly of power only, only run a small amount of miles. Power only in any capacity is not a sustainable way to run a trucking company. If you have older or paid off equipment, low to no debt, and no need to make large payments, then maybe it'll work for you. How are things going for you now in this market? Are you still "making bank"? What does "making bank" mean to you? How much do you gross weekly? How many miles? What's your average rate?
      I think what's foolish is to claim these things but not provide any background information.
      I've spoken to many people who start out saying the same thing but then we dig deeper and the run 1k miles a week in a regional market with low gross. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

      Of course you can run power only and it will pay money and you can add your deadhead into it. I'm glad you're doing well. Most people don't see $4 - $5 per mile running power only.

      That's absolutely not true. Neither AFT Dispatch nor A2C Logistics have any trailers that we lease.
      We've helped some folks rent trailers through some of our contacts in the industry.
      Our leased on owner operators can get rental trailers through our lease on program but these aren't not our trailers.
      In all cases, none of the trailers are owned by us, we don't rent equipment, and we don't lease equipment.

I would strongly advise to stay away from power only as a new carrier and during the winter season. PO slows down in the winter and while nowadays we can work with carriers who have a new authority (30 days) and it used to be 90 days till a broke would work with you. Most power only loads are load outs. Tow aways are much more rare.
      There are ways to make power only work slightly better if you pick up and deliver in large cities but it still won't help with the loss of at least a couple of days on PU/S0, deadheading, and liability issues.

    • @johnturner9924
      @johnturner9924 3 года назад +2

      Alfredo, I dont think he knows there is a difference. As you know there are three types of power only, load out, tow away and power only. Picking up a preloaded trailer hook n drop, is an easy way to make money. Listening to his rates they sound very average at best. I did notice that he was not sharing the deadhead numbers, and only giving you the gross.

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад

      @John Turner, I certainly know the difference. A tow away type of load is quite rare for one to count on it on a consistent basis, I'm sure you're aware. Load outs are much more common and sometimes we're able to get trailers for up to 2 weeks which helps a lot. What is this third type of "power only" you're referring to outside of tow aways and load outs? As to the deadhead miles, we show deadhead miles on many of our videos but not always. It takes a lot of time to calculate those. I will tell you that most of our deadheading is quite low at 10% - 15% of total miles.

    • @johnturner9924
      @johnturner9924 3 года назад +5

      @@AFTDispatch You have load outs(empty and can load) Tow Away (empty and cannot load), and power only where you are hauling preloaded trailers like a tow away only they are typically loaded with freight making them a hook and drop. They are plentiful and usually pay well. I run power only exclusively, I average between 2.50 and 3.50 for all my miles loaded and empty. I almost NEVER have to sit at the dock getting loaded or unloaded and I have not spent ONE PENNY on owning or maintaining a trailer. Its just wrong to tell people to say no to power only, just because it does not serve your self interest.

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад

      @John Turner - power only is a market, the largest market there is. A Tow Away is generally a preloaded trailer. They're almost never empty. So ultimately there are two types, a load out and a tow away. As to the rest of your comment, why would it not serve us? We make the same amount of money. We tell people to stay away from power only for the reasons explained in the video. Lots of deadheading, wasted time, having to take loads you don't want just to deliver the trailer, additional liability, insurance, potentially bad trailers, and other issues. Would you disagree? Maybe you ought to watch the video again if you missed those points.

    Usually I don't deadhead for power onlys or loadouts I find something close to me and I usually negotiate a higher rate because there are brokers that will pay a higher rate and that means that will guarantee they get their trailer sooner not 100% guarantee but it's like maybe a 75% guarantee that I'll be able to get it to them sooner cuz they paid me more at least that's how I do it but you have to stipulate that it's always a negotiation

      Thanks George, great insight. Something to keep in mind is that they don't usually care to have their trailer. This is why many of them will allow you to hold onto the PO trailer longer for a $50/day penalty. I'm not saying you can't make money in power only trucking, just that you can make more money and much more consistently when you have a trailer. Every load you see in our videos is someone who has a trailer, whether their own or a rental.

      Depends on what you're looking for. If running under your own MC, then it's 7% and if leasing on it's 12% plus deductions.

    This is why I don't listen to the so-called expert this guy is completely wrong. I made over 240,000 last year running power only. Don't listen to these guys that are trying to talk you into leasing on with them and they want to control the truck that you bought it's all Bs

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  2 года назад

      A donkey with a cart could've made that in last year's market. At least look at the date of publication.
      No one proclaimed to be an expert. As to talking people into doing something, no one is forced to lease on and we also work with carriers so it doesn't matter to us one way or another.
      How much money are you making now in Power Only. Who cares about last year's inflated numbers. Or did you get a trailer?
      I hope you have a better day.

    Power only load pay like crap!! I did power only before I got a trailer and man it was a big difference in pay!!

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад +1

      It's a huge difference and this is why we're not fans of power only. We recently began working with some power only carriers only because we want to be able to help them make something rather than nothing. It's tough right now with the trailer shortages. You can see in our recent videos that we've done quite well for them. One carrier hit nearly $13,500 running power only. It's obviously not the best way to go but I'd much rather they make this than sit around wasting their time during this hot freight market.

      I guess this is more geography based. I'm in wv and there are quite a few power only opportunities but it involves moving company owned trailers to company specified destinations. And the trailer load outs you hardly see. If it was my job to deliver someone else's trailer I wouldn't feel comfortable using it.

    • @AFTDispatch
      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад

      @Mike Spradling it really geography based. You have to run where there is industry. Load outs are okay if you take what you can get and shoot for a higher average knowing there will be more bobtailing involved.

  • @dannytucker1394

    And I never did load outs I would only pick preloaded trailers straight to the destination drop it get head to my next one and I'll always get paid for your dead head

      @AFTDispatch  3 года назад

      I speak with a lot of people and some do make good money with PO. I'm glad you're one of those people.
      Most of the time, when we get into the details, it comes out that they run regional, barely put on any miles, and the "a lot of money" they claim isn't much at all.
      I'm glad you're doing well. Please keep in mind that PO slows down during the winter and this is exactly what we're seeing now.
