This tender arrangement of J.S. Bach/Petri "Sheep May Safely Graze" is one of the most popular pieces of the piano transcription literature. It was arranged for solo piano by the Dutch pianist Egon Petri.
The performance was done in honor of my wonderful mentor and former professor Leon Fleisher (1928-2020) in memoriam. Sheep May Safely Graze, BWV 208, is an aria by Johann Sebastian Bach set to the words of German poet Salomon Franck. Also known as "Schafe können sicher weiden" in German or "Sheep may safely graze" in English, the music was interpreted to show the duke's kindness and beneficence to his subjects.
Composed in 1713, Sheep May Safely Graze is a secular choral work often referred to as both the Birthday Cantata and the Hunting Cantata (Sheep May Safely Graze is the 9th movement). The work was commissioned by Duke Christian that year explaining the former nickname, while the opening words of Movement One explain the latter: The lively hunt is all my heart's desire". This is the familiar "Schafe können sicher weiden" or "Sheep may safely graze" subtext showing the duke's grace.
