    I just love the look of the 15 inch gun turret. A reliable, proven design that served superbly through both wars.

    I love this. my father was a loading ram operator in Warspite's X turret 1941 to 1943.

      Thanks for watching. The gun crew were all allocated numbers - the chain rammer was the gun crew number 4. They also seem to have been referred to as the "pedaller" due to the fact they had to pedal (throttle) the chain rammer when loading the cordite charge.

      @@rnbreech4194 My father died almost 40 years ago, Like many other service men he didn't talk a great deal about his war service. He would occasionally talk though, maybe when we were watching a documentary or a war movie. I remember him going throught the actions when he was describing loading the gun. Thanks very much for the information, I don't know as much as I would like to know about the workings of the gun turrets. I have shared your videos of the 15 inch guns on a Facebook group about HMS Warspite, there are quite a few members who had relatives who served on the ship and who like me want to find out as much as they can.

      I came across the Imperial War Museum's sound archive while doing research for this model. They have some incredible interviews with former RN service men. These range from a survivor of HMS Invincible at Jutland to ratings talking about what it was like to work the turrets.
      The link below is an interview with a former 15 inch gun crewman (audio file 2 - talks about the 15 inch gun at the 24 minute mark)
      www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80033056
      There's nothing quite like hearing it directly from the horse's mouth!
      They also have an interview with Warspite's gunnery officer at Jutland but this doesn't seem to be available online.

    The engineering in those days was outstanding. All of today’s technology can’t match what they designed and built at the start of the 20th century
    Excellent practical quality work.

      @@rnbreech4194 Here is something i have noticed about the Tampions, many photos show them arranged like on your model with the Woodpeckers facing each other on each pair of guns, but other photos show them all facing to the left as you stand in front of the barrels. The actual ships crest with the woodpecker always faces left. Maybe its dependant on the time period or who is in command of the ship.

    • @rnbreech4194
      @rnbreech4194  3 года назад +1

      Yes, I've seen early photographs of Warspite where the woodpecker tompions all looked left. These tompions looked like they had a polished metal finish like the one at the Royal Museum Greenwich - collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/1761.html. Later photographs (circa WW2) show the tompions as looking inboard and also look like they are painted.

      Thanks a lot! I used "B.R. 849 Handbook for the 15-inch B.L. Mark 1 Gun on Twin Marks 1 and 1N Mountings". The drawings in it aren't exactly engineering drawings but good enough for the job. I have Robert Browns "Battleship Warspite" book which has good draughtsman like drawings of the turret but they were too small too model from. I'll hopefully get what scans I have from B.R. 849 online at some point.
