    What makes this Movie so special is that it took a scenario that's been done to death, and did it without all those annoying stereotypes.
    No main-girl moping. No angry father trying to kill the boy who made her pregnant. No the boy being a jerk. No bullying of the girl for being pregnant. No mean stepmother. And best of all, no the kids giving up everything else to take care of the baby.
    The Movie eaven notes that there's nothing wrong with being a single mum.

      I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if it would've worked in this instance or not, but I think it'd probably be better for a teen pregnancy story, especially set from the perspective of the teen mom, to at least touch on bullying. I've known two teenage mothers, and both of them have been bullied for, one to the point of transferring to another school just because she couldn't take it anymore. It's a real problem, and I think it should be acknowledged.

      Meh, I think it just removed some stereotypes but replaced them with others. I mean, to me, Juno is the biggest walking 'alternative-hipster-girl' cliche in film; despite Doug's analysis I find her completely unrealistic and unrelatable.
      And I was a teenager when this came out; from experience I can say that the dialogue really is gimmicky bullshit

    • @Origami84
      @Origami84 6 лет назад +12

      Except that, there is a lot wrong in being a single mom - even when you are a grown up. Those stereotypes, while done to dead, were there for a reason: a parent that cares for its daughter gets destroyed by a teen pregnancy. Suddenly all your hopes for her - whatever they focused on, degree and career or family life with a good man - are damaged. If she abandon the baby, through adoption or abortion, in both cases she will have to live with the remainder. If she keeps it, her future aspirations both in careers and in dating will be diminished. It IS a bad thing. That's why the stereotype is to get angry and scream at your stupid teen that should have known better. Juno, when i watched it, seemed trying way too hard to make it look like it was all ok. Like "eh, i am pregnant but i am giving it away, dont care, its cool". If she is truly like that, she is a cold husk of a girl and i dontwant to watch her life. IF she was faking it, then the movie gave the wrong impression. Either way, i didnt like it.

      Origami84 why do people only blame the girl? The boy who impregnates her usually gets off Scot free. He'll of pressured her into have sex and not of worn a condom or told her to take a pill ect. He'll of been the one who wanted to have sex.

    I never thought "what the fuck?" at the nurse being rude and condescending to Juno. A lot of young mothers, not even just teens, are subject to unwarranted hostility, disrespect, and even harassment. Even by medical "professionals". That's honestly one of the most authentic scenes in the movie, unfortunately.

  • @SayaCeline
    @SayaCeline 8 лет назад +528

    I'd argue against the scene of Juno having that awkward dance with the guy (whose name I forgot because it's been so long!) being listed as a WTF pointless scene. It did a pretty good job of furthering the subplot with his character being pretty okay with getting it on with a teenager. It was actually one of the more interesting aspects of the movie when I watched it again not too long ago. I loved how it seemed to bring up that while Juno was pretty sassy and probably liked to think she was more mature than her peers, she still had that naive side, that maybe doesn't quite understand that just because someone is married doesn't mean they won't take advantage of someone like her

    Not only do I not think Juno's parents weren't angry (they were pretty pissed and disappointed) but most real world problems are met with a less dramatic reaction than what most expect. Also, I think the point was that Juno is a trouble maker and they pretty much knew this was just the kind of shit they were going to have to deal with. Did you miss the part about how they intuitively expected her talk to be that she was addicted to hard drugs?

It makes more sense for them to react this way than overdramatic, crying, self pity, and "Where did we go wrong??" Because all of that is *unnecessary and a waste of time*. The most responsible and mature way of dealing with a teen pregnancy situation is exactly how they dealt with it. Calm and rational and level-headed.

      @robynwilson9227 6 лет назад +51

      Were you a teen in 2007? Honestly, you'd be shocked because this is oddly accurate to the experience I had (I lived in a VERY small village with things spread really far apart so if say, the kids wanted to go to the park (literally the nearest park required you to cross two fields (ONE HAD A FUCKING BULL IN THE FIELD NEXT DOOR), a public footpath and a beck, no joke) or something, the older siblings would just all band together to take them because the journey was too dangerous, I remember it very well though I was a kid at the time, the teens did use a hell of a lot of cheesy slang that made no sense) , it's not perfect by any means but it's nowhere near as bad as other movies haha.
      Plus, having been a teen through the current decade I can assure you teens talk incredibly stupidly, I embarrass myself. "That's lit", "swag" and other painful phrases were all dropped into conversations, even by the friggin nerd pile that was me and my friends haha. Hell, we still use them in college now just to take the piss out of our former selves lol.

    As a writer, one of the most important things I've been is that the best stories aren't about "people like this", but rather "this person specifically". It's the latter formula that makes interesting and relatable characters, while the former creates stories that try to deliver a strong story, but tend to fail more easily.

    There is a scene in the movie where Juno says 'I don't really know what kind of person I am' and there is something about it that really comforts me. She wasn't the prettiest one in high school or had the best looking boyfriend or money or perfect career plan or all the knowledge and wisdom or bunch of boys crushing on her. She was just an ordinary girl with ordinary life who got up in some messy situation. I loved the interactions between characters. Not only juno bt all think all the characters in the movie were unique and yet normal.
    I loved the film coz it made me feel like it's ok to be flawed and not have the best of everything. You can still be happy even if u don't have any extraordinary life or talent. She was true to herself that was rather extraordinary about her and she did it without preaching about it (that's what most characters do in teenage movies.)

    Juno and Paulie talking about the living room set demonstrates their friendship
    Bren snapping at the nail tech is one of the best moments in the film because she's standing up for her stepdaughter.

    I just saw the movie today for the first time (ik mad late) so with no nostalgic bias or influence from hype back in the day, I can honestly say it was a good movie, great movie even. I love ellen page's character and she really carried the movie. Capturing an angsty and sarcastic teenager while still being likable couldnt have been easy. & I dont think the comic art style detracted anything from the experinece, it goes with the movie's laid back and rustic tone. The setting, music, the way juno dresses, the color palette (especially when it starts off in the fall), the calm (but not overly calm) reaction of her parents dealing with the pregnancy. It all fits together in a way that makes sense.

    I agree that this movie has a few scenes that seemingly only exist to add a quirky aesthetic, however the scene where Juno and Batsman’s character slow dance is definitely not one of those scenes. As creepy as it is, this scene actually symbolizes Juno’s major perspective shift in the movie. It is in this moment where Bateman’s characters changes from that cool older guy and into a dysfunctional creep. This change of POV disrupts Juno’s perception of the world and thus encapsulates what the movie is trying to say thematically. Before this moment, Juno believes that functional people do exist out there in the world and that she just isn’t one of them yet. However, after this moments (and the ones which follow it), when the family whom she perceives to be the epitome of normal reveal their dysfunction, Juno realizes that maybe everyone is as dysfunctional as her in one way or another.

      It falls into the same category as Napoleon Dynamite, awkward, slow, boring, and realistic enough that if I wanted that experience I'd shut the movie off and just go live my life. That is one of the worst categories to fall into because people watch movies to live other lives not their own (they can already do that).

      +jebes909090 I don't think it is either trying too hard. It just had a style to it that made people think that it was either "trying too hard" simply because anybody is calling any style either overstylish because it is unusual or something. Yeah, it didn't always fit, but is was how it looked visually.

    I didn't like the film but I did noticed some thought provoking scenes.
    The dynamic with the couple who are going to adopt. The couple made all the right choices, education, good jobs, Jennifer Garner is attractive and Jason Bateman seemed like a charming guy. For what ever reason this couple that did everything right could not biologically conceive, and this poor teenage girl does albeit unintentionally. Isn't that a weird coincidence in our culture that those who are best prepared and willing to raise children cannot and those who want to go on and live their own lives are thrust into parenthood. Makes you wonder how we developed as a species, how instinct still drives us to procreate even though we believe our actions are controlled by freewill.

      I don't know really. Sounds more like either dumb luck or just the whole "Law of Inverse Fertility" trope. Maybe it reflects reality, or maybe it's just ironic storytelling.

      @yellinghayfire4935 6 лет назад +13

      For most of human history the average lifespan of of a person was 40 if they were lucky. That's pretty much why teenagers desire sex so young and can conceive easily, while stable 30 something people have a harder time having a kid. All the things like good incomes jobs and education have only been a thing in the last couple centuries, and it's a modern manmade prerequisite for raising a child in a comfortable stable home. But ironically it takes people at least to their 30s to get to a point to be ready to have a child, where people naturally start to have fertility problems.

    • @Papershire
      @Papershire 6 лет назад +4

      Yeah, agree with you there. I had my first child at 17 and yet my parents' friends in their late 30s, early 40s (3 couples that I know of) can't have kids at all! This is not a "trope" as Optimus points out, it is reality for a lot of people who struggle to reproduce at a later age. I was not prepared for parenthood at all, but ya know, I would say my kids are very happy and intelligent, I have a business and we are doing pretty well. Not really sure why people are getting slammed for having kids young. 2 generations ago, this was normal, but hey I suppose it's because the age for mandatory schooling has increased that this is now a weird thing to be doing. We all know most parents just get pissed off because they want their teenage kids to go to uni and get a good job to lift them all out of poverty or so they can brag their kids are successful. Stop telling your kids what to do! They're probably going to be damn fine! I wouldn't exchange my teenage pregnancy for a useless university degree thank you very much. Hell, my 8 year old is looking into making a business of his own and i'm pretty sure he'll be miles more successful than the sprogs of middle aged people. :P

    I adore this movie. In a time with generic action movies, such as "punch man 32: now more punching", Adam Sandler and generic comedies such as 21 jump street, I think it's lovely to have a movie that's a bit more original. Yeah it has flaws and unnecessary quircks, but atleast it's trying, and atleast it has some heart. I actually think the writing is really well-written with it's dry humor. One of my favorite scenes is when Juno is sitting in the big Chair outside the house talking about the color of his shorts and says "go her (forgot his mom's name...)" while looking totally unimpressed.

    I kinda liked this movie when I watched it the first time. But then it was painful to watch a second time. It just tries too hard to be quirky (as Doug said), Juno's personality becomes aggravating and tiresome really soon, the fact that she falls in love with Paul is rather dumb (straight out of a fairy tale that), the adoptive father (can't remember his name) is extremely creepy, the abortion clinic scene is just awkward as hell for all the wrong reasons and so on. Most of the stuff movie shows that isn't related to the pregnancy is just annoying and fake. However, I do like the serious parts of the movie such as Juno's stepmother's advice, the adoptive's mother desire to become a mother and how she copes with her douche creepy husband leaving, Juno and Paul's fallng out and the relationship between Juno and her stepmother.

    I'm far behind everyone, but I just saw Juno yesterday after avoiding it for years (for no particular reason, I just can't usually sit through movies) and I loved it. I'm 20, in college, and married already and the film made me rethink a lot of stuff. Not my marriage or anything, but the speed at which I'm living life. I do perceive myself to be more mature then my peers, and honestly, that's not true at all. Making adult decisions doesn't make you an adult, it's being ready for them. Personally, this movie reminded me that it's okay to not know who I am yet and that it's okay to be 20. Life is not a race, I should relax a bit and think level-headidly. As corny as it was at times, I enjoyed everything about it. It focused on Juno, but not romance. It still had romance in it, but it was a background idea. It strayed away from romanticizing parenthood, which we see way too often and can lead to teen pregnancy. It had parental figures who handled the news appropriately. It had proof that married, seemingly safe individuals can still take advantage of people. It had irrationality, like Juno pushing away Bleeker away and then getting upset at him for giving her space. Juno's ridiculous furniture moving even presents her as trying too hard to be cool, like we've all done before. Every aspect presented her as a struggling 16 year old, which is exactly what she is. I can see where the hype for this movie goes above and beyond, but I think it's a coming of age film that I wish I saw sooner.

    Even in 2019 this movie is pretty great. It’s funny if you like that kind of humor, doesn’t overly glamorize or dramatize Juno’s situation&the soundtrack is kickass. It feels topical no matter when you watch it. Unlike other movies there’s nothing in it that makes it dated like slang, clothing or song choices. Juno, Whip It!&Perks of Being a Wallflower are what a coming of age stories should be. Not only do I get something out it as I age, but my mom or people with different life experiences can also get something out of it. We need more movies like this. Not the same recycled YA bs we’ve been getting since the Twilight, Divergent&Hunger Games film adaptions

The awkward stuff was awkward, but felt so realistic and believable that it just works for me. Life has awkward quirks. I thought the animated segments were charming and fit the tone of the script. 2021 and I've finally seen this movie. I find it relieving, the main character pretty cool, and I cried when she cried. I have definitely gone through what Juno did in regards to men in relationships and being friends. (and basically being both naieve and questionably taken advantage of. ) Movies have become so dramatic and exhausting over the years, so predictable. This movie feels so much more real to me. Lots of people help their daughters through pregnancy without disowning them. And I like the personal struggle she has about whether "perfect" relationships can even exist in the 21st century. Being from her own broken family, she doesn't want her baby to experience that. I'm 29 and I stay up at night thinking about that still. But it's not something I can talk about with my friends. The teenage experience is such a clean slate that those questions can be asked refreshingly honestly.

    I thought it was a neat little movie that a lot of people seemed to like.
    I wasn’t aware of the cultural impact or the conversations surrounding it.
    I would say if I even remotely thought that this movie was trying to be taken seriously and be the voice for a generation (one that was very close to mine) I would’ve had a lower opinion of it.
    The intent of movies speaks volumes to how they’re received. I don’t think it was the intention for this movie to be as popular and “groundbreaking” as people took it to be.
    So in that respect it’s good- at least to me. It doesn’t make any top 10 lists or spark any strong thoughts or feelings for me. It’s just a neat movie.

At first I thought she stopped acting because she was awful based on past performances, then I realized with a net worth of 60 million because TV syndication deals she just doesn't need to unless she gets a role she wants. Good for her!

    2:45 really? people actually believed this movie was "saying something" about pregnancy? that's just plain stupid. with a subject as broad as pregnancy, you can't expect people to represent it properly. there are different sides to this type of scenario. this is where what to expect when you're expecting excels. it recognizes that there is no right way to live your life. different people will react different ways, so the notion that audiences would take this so seriously is just dumb.

      Pregnant people are vulnerable. The young ones know what they did was stupid and irresponsible and this film glamorized it. It gave them hope where none is ever found.

      Apparently Ellie used to look a lot like Ellen Page before people started pointing it out and Naughty Dog made some slight changes so that wasn't the case

    The fact that this movie won an oscar instead of Logan is a crime on it's own.

    As someone who is adopted this was a hard film for me to watch. My birth mother is a sow from hell and she still loved me enough to be sad when she gave me up.

      I hope you’re happier, some people never meet their birth mothers and it’s unfortunate. My cousins were adopted, they are teenagers but they don’t know that their mother was killed years ago.

    I hated Juno from the beginning. The writing is trying so hard to be "awesomely quirky" but fails pretty miserably. I was 19 at the time and had an indie sensibility (so presumably in the prime target demographic), and I can vouch that the tone came across as completely unrealistic and insincere. I mean, really - "honest to blog"? Can anyone hear that and not cringe?
    Also, literally every character talks the same way. Such a blatant lack of nuances in voice is a pretty clear indicator of a bad writer.
