I've always had the impression that laughter is a response to absurdity rather than an instinctive response to undesirable situations. It's a pleasurable response to something intellectually rather than emotionally.

Yes because no other generation has been stupid. Like when they thought Homosexuality was an illness. Or when Climate Change didn't exist. Or when evolution wasn't real. Or when vampires were real.
      Hmm.

Luke The Power Man Yeah, no. Kids of every generation have had obnoxious tastes. The music of the 80s and 90s was just like ours today, There were shitty mainstream pop songs that served no purpose and there was actual good stuff. Same with today. There is good music made today, you just need to look for it, like you have always had to. Now it is easier. There were tons of shitty games in the 80s and 90s, they just aren't remembered. There were tons of shitty movies in the 80s and 90s.
On the topic of kids never amounting to anything, that's full of shit. You don't know that. Education now is very good. We have the internet. There are many more jobs because of it. It's likely that this generation will be like every other generation before us.

"Dying is easy. Comedy is hard." This video explains why very well. A lot of times, I've told a joke that people did not get, and so I had to explain the joke. I love comedy. I LOVE comedy. So I pay great attention to it. When I need to explain why a joke is funny, I know how to, much like videos like these. However, in doing so, the response I typically get is "You are putting way too much thought into it." How? Comedy may be something we instinctively react to, but just because the reaction is quick and knee-jerk doesn't mean there is not a detailed reason for that happening.
It just bothers me how so many people who do not bother themselves with the "Why?" will demean the efforts to understand of those that DO bother themselves with the "Why?" It is why people who WANT to be funny may not actually be funny, because all they understand is "Be random and hope people like it." There is so much more to good comedy than that. The best comedians do not just wake up one day and _decide_ they want to make people laugh. They watch other comedians, take inspiration from others before them and their own motivations, and learn WHY people react to certain things. If someone tells you "It is just funny. You put too much thought into it." then GOOD! You're doing it right!

What makes that sketch funny is that "she" is listing the foods off and most if not all consist of SPAM. As "she" keeps listing SPAM becomes repeated over and over on a beat. Then, unexpectedly, the patrons of the restaurant join in by chanting SPAM in song. TTG just start randomly saying waffles and it gets really annoying. When told to explain how waffles is funny they just start singing an annoying song that consists of just the word "waffle." The audience is already annoyed with waffle when they created the setting for their delivery, and the delivery is just more of what annoyed the audience in the first place. It is funny at first because Robin is getting annoyed by it. But after that delivery the rest is just an annoyance. The song is not so unexpected because they are already repeating waffle. The song adds nothing new.

Whether comedy is improvised or scripted, it's no science as far as being exact but it is science as far as needing trial and error to find the right result least for some if not all to enjoy.

I feel it's usually funnier if you can relate to. We laugh to relieve anxiety. So if a joke is related to something similar to something you have experienced or something you imagine could happen to cause you anxiety, you will feel empathetic anxiety. People tend to laugh to defend against embarrassing moments. If you fall in the mud and ruin your new shirt you loved you laugh so you don't cry. I feel that if Heman were real, he could sing that song and feel embarrassed at seeing that someone recorded it. Since Heman (the character not the show) is usually more serious since he is only around when someone needs help. He would laugh to prevent those feelings. If you have a sibling or kids then you know what it is like to be in a car with a horrible noise maker and since in dumb and dumber they are doing it to the "bad guy" we think "Finally, someone who deserves it." I love these videos and this whole channel, especially the commercial vids. Thank you!

    And I say hey.... hey....
I said hey, what's goin' on
Ooh, Ooh, Oooohh, Oooohh, what's up...
Ooh, Ooh, Oooohh, Oooohh, what's up...
And I try, oh my God, do I try
I try all the time in this institution
And I pray, oh my God, do I pray
I pray every single day FOR A REVOLUTION!
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out, what's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
    WHAT'S GOIN' ON!!
    And I say hey.... hey....
I said hey, what's goin' on
    And I say hey.... hey....
I said hey, what's goin' on
    And I say hey.... hey....
I said hey, what's goin' on
    And I say hey.... hey....
I said hey, what's goin' on
    Yeeeeah!

As strange as it sounds, personally I think it's part of what makes us as a species intelligent. We're driven to find patterns in things and part of that comes from us finding things that challenge our expectations to be funny, it draws our attention to them and helps break us out of false patterns that we might be stuck in.
Sometimes I think the joy we get from pure nonsense, such as the He-man head-bopping clip, is from the knowledge that there is no pattern to find, no deeper hidden meaning and absolutely no puzzles to solve. It gives us a moment of relief from the endless struggle of understanding the world around us.
So in some ways the stupid clip is better than the Dali Llama. He tries to explain with words how to seek a state of perfect Nirvana and end the constant struggle of material existence, whereas for a single moment of perfect absurdity the He-man clip achieves it for the viewer.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 7 лет назад +7

No no, that wasn't the point. Mel Brooks and the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker team pioneered the movie satire genre in the 70s-80s, and did it so well that all the attempted wannabes today come off as cheap ripoffs because they're just recycling the gags. As well as misunderstanding *why* the pop-culture references in those movies were funny, so they just include pop-culture refs without the absurdity or juxtaposition that made them work in previous spoofs.

    • @MaJuV
      @MaJuV 7 лет назад +1

I can see why you're insulted; but he has a point. They're both parody movies.
But Spaceballs is considered a classic, while nobody likes Starving Games. This because a lot of effort was put into spaceballs to make most jokes unexpected (at that point in time). But for the last ten years it seems like Parody movies just aren't working anymore. Most jokes are repeated until they're no longer funny; no risks are taken and at the end, you have a bland and unfunny movie.
Heck, nowadays a lot of RUclips channels are doing parody better than parody movies themselves.
... and I think I'm repeating one of Doug's Editorials on Parody movies.

This is why I keep coming back for Nostalgia Critic even when I say I am done with his stuff. I love the intelligent deconstruction done with love. And while I am no youtuber, the over done productions, the side characters and the attempts to put in all the "story" into the videos take away from why, at least myself, watch the videos, for the comedic deconstruction of the movies or the topic at hand. Thats not to say the occasional cameo cant be done entertainingly well (See Linkara and Fat Grandma in the Cinema Snob Silent Night Deadly Night reviews), but most of the time is just gets in the way of the "review" and I find myself fast forwarding, rolling my eyes and sighing. Still, great video!

Comedy isn't misery. Some comedy is *influenced* by misery, but it's not some bedrock truth.
You were a little closer with saying comedy is defying expectation, but even then that only encompasses most comedy, not all of it.
The only bedrock principle of comedy... is timing (cue Casper).
A fart at the wrong time? Gross and immature. At the right time? Still juvenile but people won't care because they're laughing so hard they're crying.
To reiterate, the only truly absolute, categorical, fundamental, bedrock principle of comedy is

      @Alienrun 7 лет назад +3

Khalid Alamer Is this question a joke?
Please tell me its a joke?!
You have to look at the big picture here. Bad things happen in life because people choose to do bad things which causes suffering. But because we have that choice of doing bad and good, there is more reward for when good triumphs over evil!
What might look like suffering to one person might not be so bad to the person that its happening too.
A starving person could be thankful for what he has, and yet a rich dude might be super lonely and sad.
      It's all about perspective...
...We all feel a distinct need to find something to belong to, something that is bigger than ourselves, but the reality is we can't do it by ourselves.
It's our job to help each other find those answers and to inspire that hope to make the world a better place! We need to be brave enough to look deep into our own souls, we need to not shy away from the hard questions in life and seek the hard answers that come with it...
It's easy to just say "f**k it" or "life sucks" or whatever. But I and many others belive that if everyone could see the beauty of a soul without sin...then there would be no sin!
Find a goal that goes beyond death and find others to help you help others to find that same goal and you should be fine! :D
