- As the trial of Ryan Duke moved through opening statements Monday, Ashleigh Merchant with the defense told jurors the case was one of 'power and influence,' something of which she says Ryan Duke does not have. She told jurors the state would present evidence, but certain questions could not be answered, like when the glove appeared in Tara Grinstead's yard or where her car was the night she was allegedly killed.
