  • The next vehicle in the Fixing it Forward series is this 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R owned by Jerry Hall. His son, Bryan, contacted me a couple of months back about bringing his dads car in. Once he said he was a Vietnam veteran, that's all I needed to hear, he was in.
    In this installment we look the car over for existing and potential problems. Bryan was thinking the car might be a total loss. After looking it over, I would have to disagree. Sure, the car needs some work, but nothing that I see condemning the car for.
    At least it's not a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country right?
    I'm looking forward to the videos with this one. We've got some fun work lined up. Stay tuned.

      I can't remember, was it just Skylines that were made illegal? I heard a rumour that it was the case in the US, but being from UK, I didn't check

    • @ps2jak2
      @ps2jak2 8 лет назад

      +Naoki Saito Pretty much any car first sold overseas younger than 25 is illegal from what I understand unless it was sold in the US too (not a US resident but have read up on this awhile ago). This is due to them not complying with emissions or crash testing and once they're past the age they can be considered classics and excempt. I think some models of R33 are OK as the original Skyline importer back in the day (there was one organisation who imported heaps of them) managed to get one officially crash tested and emissions compliant and so those are legal if they're the same model.

    • @ps2jak2
      @ps2jak2 8 лет назад

      +Jak Just double checked what I said above, the R33 GTS and GTR are legal but nothing else and out of the 32 33 and 34 they are the least desirable due to their shape and higher weight.

    • @jeepmanxj
      @jeepmanxj 8 лет назад +2

      +Jak And that company was charged with fraud. No amount of crash testing a car not sold in the US will make it legal, no amount of making emissions compliant will make it legal. Every individual car has to be imported and specially registered and given a vin number. Some states, such as KY even with the vin given to you its nearly impossible to get the state to accept the new vin. I've personally been around this situation, and it was a fucking terrible pain.
      There is armies of factual information around on this topic. Even past 25 years its not gravy to get one imported. Its obscenely expensive and unrealistic for 90% of car buyers.

    Hey Eric, I'm enjoying your videos. Thanks!
    I had a 2002 Nissan Maxima for around 9yrs (just got rid of it this past summer because of corrosion. Lots of salt on the roads here in Ottawa, ON, Canada.) and those EVAP systems were constant battle. Those particular codes (P0455 & P1448) were from the same problem on my Max. The Vent control valve that's attached to the charcoal canister tends to rust internally over time and will eventually seize in the open position hence the gross leak and vent control valve code. Easy way to test is disconnect the connector to valve and apply a 12v DC power source to the leads. If you hear a popping sound when the power is applied then the valve is good. If not then it's seized in the open position and will need replacing. That should resolve your codes. Good luck!!

    The good ol' QR25De first gen. What a colorful history that engine has. Your main concern should be cats and butterflies. Yes, you read that right.

    • @sc0tte1-416
      @sc0tte1-416 8 лет назад

      +XenomorphLV426 Yep...I had an 03 Spec, and luckily I found out about the engine sucking in crap from both sides when it only had 15k km on it, my solution? Get a header and loctite the runner screws lol. Surprisingly the QR is a pretty good engine considering the long stroke and tiny connecting arms...I put lots of miles on mine and never burned a drop and had awesome compression

    • @sc0tte1-416
      @sc0tte1-416 8 лет назад +2

      Jimmy De'Souza The engine vibrates screws that hold the intake butterfly valves in place and sucks them up destroying the engine. Then, on the exhaust side, the pre-catalytic converter breaks up into fine grit, and gets sucked into the engine during valve overlap, also either severely damaging or destroying the engine completely.

    • @ericramming
      @ericramming 8 лет назад +1

      ahh yes the butterfly screw's! How could I forget tearing the the intake manifold off my 6 month old car to loctite the screw's that had already become loose after only 10k miles!!!

  • @PhilippBorn
    @PhilippBorn 8 лет назад +25

    tbh, a high mileage doesn't mean much if the owner takes care of the car. The periodic oil change is a good start.

    • @WreckDiver99
      @WreckDiver99 8 лет назад +3

      +Philipp Born Agree...I had a 2006 Ford Fusion that had 200K when she left me, and already has another 100K on her...NOTHING besides tires/brakes/Oil Changes (and a new radio). I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe coming up on 500K ... and it finally needs some ignition work done (plugs/wires/coil), shocks, and the AC finally died....What do both vehicles have in common??? I maintained the vehicle...too many people expect a car to last 500K miles yet never care for the car and then cry when it breaks.

    • @NamesAA
      @NamesAA 8 лет назад

      +WreckDiver99 Crazy because oil and trans fluid changes will save the car. You can let all the other shit go, all the suspension can be neglected and it wont care, just change the damn fluids!

    • @WreckDiver99
      @WreckDiver99 8 лет назад

      +Reddituar Transfluid was done on the Both...as was the coolant...The one thing I never did to the Fusion was the Plugs (garages wanted $800 to change them because the V6 requires to have the intake manifold and fuel rail off, and to put it honestly, the 3 front plugs looked PERFECT when I pulled them). Never fear, fluids were changed.

    • @sc0tte1-416
      @sc0tte1-416 8 лет назад +1

      +Philipp Born Agreed, if you're religious with your oil changes and use good quality oil (always used synthetic myself), it will do wonders for your engine. I've never had an engine burn a drop of oil and they've always ran like a top for me even when I beat the crap out of them daily.

    First off, a big THANK YOU to Jerry for his service!
    Be cautious about calling the struts based on a jounce test and fluid leaks. I recently did the front struts on my car, with 170k miles on them (factory original parts). The car passed the jounce test with flying colors, and there were no leaks, BUT, when I disassembled the struts, both of them sunk on their own rather quickly, while the rebound stroke was stiff as if brand new. They were bad, and all the typical testing didn't show it.
    All in all, that car's in darn good shape, especially considering the mileage!

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 8 лет назад

      I had a car with that problem as well. A very estute MOT tester noticed and failed me. The test, in one movement kneel on the bumper with your entire weight. The car should lower with noticeable resistance with no major rebound.

    • @skullerone1917
      @skullerone1917 8 лет назад

      +rhkips This. I changed the struts on my SpecV @ 100k miles and the difference was massive. None of the old struts were leaking and the car passed the bounce test, but it was nervous in corners and new struts cured that. Given that KYB GR2s (oem spec) are around 60USD a piece, might be good to change the struts if you guys are not on an absolute minimum budget.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 8 лет назад

      +Skuller One Eric tested it with the jounce test, but he felt good about them on the drive. I've heard a lot rhkips that the test while the car sitting is no longer valid on newer designs. I always let the drive test tell me. Quick turns or speeding up or slowing down can point at suspension weak points.

    Vent control valve is stuck open. I've changed hundreds of those while working for Nissan dealership. Timing chains were also very common to replace.

    • @saskLS1
      @saskLS1 8 лет назад +1

      +motorheadv10 Correct me if I'm wrong, but one symptom of the stuck vent control valve is having difficulty in filling up with gas, the gas pump nozzle keeps clicking off like the tank is full...
      IIRC that was the case with my 99 Maxima. I got the valve "unstuck" by soaking it penetrating fluid and working it loose.

    Hey Eric!
    Those sentras takes time to turn-over like that; specially if it's your first time driving one. The fuel delivery system is not that great on those cars. The fuel pump takes a bit of time to build pressure, specially if it sat for a couple of hours. I have a sentra myself. When starting the car, I put the key on ACC first and hold it there. You should hear the fuel pump hum for about 2 seconds as it builds pressure, then turn the engine on - it should start right up.
    Other than that, sentras are good, solid little cars and I love mine. I would drive it to the last bolt if I can. Mine is over ten years old with 140K+ miles and never had any issue. They are very easy to service too.
    But yeah man! I'll definitely be following this awesome series.
    Keep up the great work and stay dirty!

  • @texan176

    This is an excellent type of video to do where you make essential repairs to bring a car back to good daily driver status. If you head to the junkyard for anything try and pick up the splash shields for under the radiator support. It is the doing of a lazy mechanic or cheap body repair guy to leave them off when a repair was done for something mechanical or collision related. Those shields can get pricey as new parts but if they interchange with the more base models they should be cheap used. It's pretty cool someone Jerry's age is driving a car like this instead of some big boring sedan.

    02-03 Nissan Sentras with the 2.5 engine specifically the SE-R model had issues with the Pre-catalytic converter getting to hot and disintegrating and sucking the bits back through the exhaust ports scoring the cylinder walls. They had a recall to fix it by reprogramming the ECU but there were thousands that were affected after recall work. Most tuners like myself avoided the problem all together by removing the exhaust manifold and installing an aftermarket header. Gains of 10-15 hp to the wheels is not a bad thing with a bolt on part! One major indication is oil consumption. If its eating oil start there. You will see a powder fall out of the manifold upon removal. Good luck. That vintage certainly had is problems from the factory.

I had uneven front brake wear like that on my Celica, along with one really grooved-up rotor; upon inspection, I found that the caliper associated with the bad rotor had a rusty outer piston surface, and wasn't retracting fully. I probably could've just ground down the rust, but I elected to replace it.

    Working at Nissan is a whole lot of fun. This timing chain is going to be a learning experience for me and if it is true, I cant wait to learn how to replace it. :) I've done one on a 4.0 pathfinder and we always get recalls in on Jukes for their timing chain but I have yet to work on one.

  • @goenitzlopez9391
    @goenitzlopez9391 8 лет назад

    Eric if you do end up doing the timing chain, not sure how much the job would differ on the sentra frame but ive done it on the altima and i might just tell you its probably easier to remove the engine and do it outside the car. Also when i did it you cant seem to turn the crank by hand to check to see if the marks still align they chain will jump if you turn it by hand. However just reassemble woth the marks aligned and once you fire it up it will be fine. Yea i know thats weird but thats the way it was for me and for other people too. Again this was for an altima but it might help you there too

    Hey eric love the series, as far as the long cranking time goes, its a known issue for this model. My mother has owned a 2004 sentra since new and its always done that. Its a fuel pressure issue. After it sits it wont start on first crank but as soon as you reset it'l fire right up. Almost everyone on online fourms says its the same thing

    ERIC... BROTHER... I LOVE YOU MAN!
    hahaha..
    but seriously... i knew you were a good guy who would do this kindof of stuf 5 years ago when i first found your channel.
    BUT HEY, I GOT AN IDEA FOR THE SENTRA:
    ok.. first... im a honda guy, so i dont know if this can be done on a nissan... but.
    that SE-R probably has stiffer springs than the regular model.
    you could swap them out.
    a man like that doesnt need the sporty suspension but i bet he loves that motor ;)
    if potholes are a bigger problem than bumps, a bigger front swaybar would help keep a single wheel from sinking as quickly...
    plus hard springs with a weak swaybar will push right down into the holes.
    i think a wider profile set of tires would help a lot... new fronts, used rears, or check discounttires prices on "milestars"..
    but for real...
    swapping to stock shocks is a wonderful thing.
    sedan fronts and se coupe rears may be idea...
    sometimes sedans have slightly weaker fronts because the weight balance is further back under breaking...
    all he would need to be warned of is he cant slam on the breaks because the nose dive will increase...
    just like the regular model though, ya know.
    anyways, just wanted to help out.
    God will bless you for the example youve set.
    your heart was a light to me in dark times.
    peace bro.

      Check the Intake, the screws come loose. if you can afford it throw a cheap header to eliminate the pre cat
      those wheels are actually 16" 00 - 01 SE Rims not the 17" 5 Spoke rims that should have come with it.
      the p0340 could also be the sensor, if your replacing the Cam Sensor, replace the crank sensor, they are the same part number, make sure they are a metal cap instead of the plastic cap. (20$)
      you can change the Struts out with a set of speedy struts for the GXE/XE Model, it removes the strut bar and softens the suspension.
      Just Replace the canister, or blow out the valve, they get caked with road grime and stick open.
      the timing chain is fine, but the tensioner could prematurely wear. replace it and it should be fine.

      This is a "Fix It Forward" not "Customize It Forward". He doesn't have unlimited time and resources to spend on one car so he is going to focus on making the car safe and optimally functioning for its age. If ride quality is improved in the process than great but swapping out functioning components is not a focus of this series as he'll even ignore some known problems depending on severity and life expectancy left on the vehicle as is reasonable.

    Regarding the long time to start: This is a common issue with the QR sentras. Mine does the same. Apparently the pressure releave valve starts expanding after sometime and causes the fuel pressure to drop. This starves the engine. There is a fuel pump rebuild kit that nissan sells for around 250 bucks that will fix it, but many have reported same problems on the kit after an year or so. What I do is to crank the car for only 3 seconds at a time. As you stop cranking you can hear the fuel pump start to prime and after the fuel pump stops making the noise, the car should start right up. At least, mine does this on a consistent basis and it almost always starts on the second try if not on the first.
    On a second thought, I think you should make a video of repairing the fuel pump so I can have a reference if and when I decide to do mine :)
    I also had to change my leaking steering rack and removing the engine crossmember was a big help in providing the clearance for getting the rack in and out. Found out that the leaking PS fluid had eaten away the driver side sway bar bushing.
    People may have already mentioned the precat and the buttrefly screw issues, both simple fixes.

    For the intake variable code look into the actuator mounted to the side of the top little timing cover make sure to see if the screens are not clogged. Also there are some o rings inside the cover make sure they are still good they could be causing an oil pressure loss for the actuator and may not be engaging properly

    Hi eric (PLEASE READ!!!!!!)
    You said that the car sometimes take a while to turn over I ran into this issue and have noticed this problem on other ser's of this vintage there was a recall on the fuel pump for this vehicle where nissan had a kit with some things to replace on the fuel pump to prevent fuel pressure from bleeding down. I realize that the owner said that the vehicle possibly needed a timing chain but I just wanted to provide some extra information. Good luck.

    Hey Eric ..not sure if this info is any help to you but the cam sensor code is very common on those cars along with the intake valve timing code..those cam sensors are notorious for going bad and usually when we see the intake timing code its due to low oil level but can also be caused by the cam sensor fault...also if I'm not mistaken I believe there is a tsb for the extended crank on that vehicle
    .if the bulletin I'm thinking about applies its either replacement of the fuel pump or a fuel pump add on that you install and it will take care of the extended crank... not sure of this information is helpful but I figure it wouldn't hurt to share my experiences with you

    timing chain stretch will cause extended crank time with a cold engine. variable valve timing codes are a given.
    leak Down testing and/or compression with a cold engine will also provide a good reference. The given milage is an obvious reference also to replacement service interval.

  • @Cragified

    About the struts Eric. You might want to check them out still. Really old struts can get the valving momentarily blocked by bits and pieces of the full extension stop floating in the oil. My 98 Neon currently has a left rear strut that has this. It will compress and rebound fine and then suddenly will practically seize up when a bit of polymer gets stuck in the valving orfices. Makes for a very jarring ride.

    It pisses me off that our veterans have to live like this. I know they're helping him, but I also know the hoops he had to jump through to get that help, and he shouldn't have to do that.
    Something similar happened to my dad back in 99, he started to have seizures and it was eventually attributed to Agent Orange from his tour in Nam. Needless to say he had to fight tooth and nail just to get the VA to pay him a few hundred bucks a month, and even then he didn't get it until around 05.
    I'm really happy there are people like Eric who do what they can for veterans.

    I have a 2004 NIssan Sentra. I had a safety recall on it a while back for an air bag issue, I have had the car for a few years and it had the issue of it starting hard when warm. I didn't mention it to the dealership but they told me that there was an issue with these fuel pumps and they wanted almost $600 for it! I laughed! The car is probably worth $600 if I washed it!
    I'll just turn the key a few times. haha
    I have had the car for 40-50K miles and it's been excellent. turn key and has yet to abandon me. Reliable POS style!
