The Nissan Sentra is Nissan’s humble commuter car. But in 1991 something weird happened: Nissan made it fast! Join James as he explores the forgotten history of one of the world’s best sport compact cars, the B13 Sentra SE-R, and how Nissan messed it all up.

There's literally millions of B13 sentra in Mexico (Known as tsuru in Mexico) being used over there as fleet and civilian vehicles. Pretty much you can find a b13 in Mexico very easy.

Well the the CEO destroyed Nissan but trying to cheap out and making generation production longer then it should (370z, frontier)
Had a spec V from new in 2004 with the track pack which meant front brembo calipers. Picked it up with 47km on the odometer and had it till 300K. Let me tell you it surprised a few people on the street and got a lot of looks and questions when it was new. FF a few years and with full exhaust including a header along with suspension upgrades, hawk HP plus pads and for one season DOT slicks, it did a hell of a job at the driver development track at mosport. And full track at Shannonville in Ontario for lapping days. Hauled ass out of hard corners with the limited slip and plenty of low end grunt. Surprising a lot of cars triple the price as I watched them slowly disappear in my rear view after a few laps. Including a cocky M5 owner at mosport who came all the way from the states to boast about his car and how many ponies it had (400 I believe he said). He turned into a man of few words after the first lapping session 😎

I owned an 04 Spec-V too. LOVED it! Had the Brembos but no after market mods or track days. It got me in a lot of trouble with tickets. Not the fastest engine but capable and the rest of the car could handle any speed with confidence. Even when the tires shreiked the car was still controllable;)

@@Bob-hi2xh It depends in which city you live, here in Guadalajara there are not that common anymore (at least near my home), most common taxis are Nissan Tiida, Kia Rio, Toyota Yaris, VW vento (polo sedan) and Prius C

We Mexicans love our outdated cars:
* The original VW Beetle was produced until 2003.
* The Jetta Mk 4 was sold until 2014 - during that time, the Mk 5 was sold under the name 'Bora', and when the Mk 6 debuted in 2010, the Mk 4 was renamed 'Clásico'.
* GM sold the Corsa B until 2012.
* Likewise, GM kept selling the first generation Aveo/Sonic until 2018, the second generation sold under the Sonic name while the first gen kept the Aveo nameplate.
* Also from GM, they still produce and sell the previous generation Spark, renaming it 'Beat'.
* Nissan has yet to debut the current generation Micra and is still selling the previous one.
Just to name a few.
Yeah but Nissan Mexico cheaped it a lot because they were used as taxis so they had a crappy engine, suspension, interior, no power windows, steel wheels, etc. And they're the most stolen vehicle in the entire country. It's hard to find a good one from the old days.

I was just at the opposite side of the street. It only got totaled cuz' I went thru the divider with huge rocks which tore all important parts from underneath lol. but the body was unharmed

As the Tsuru GSR2000 so its hard to see any these days ive only seen about 2 in about the last 15 years , all the 4 door tsurus you see are the Austero tsuru meaning they are the base model cars without all the power options such as power windows, power steering, hub caps , drum brakes, NO sun roofs, no power mirrors , AC & off course

The NX2000 was my first car. Fun little car that I had would daily drive and AutoX. Thing lasted me until 09 when I ended up selling it. It's cliche to say, but I regret selling my first car.

Just purchased 4 days ago, my first car. A 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R. BEAUTIFUL condition with a fully stock SR20DE and stock alloy wheels. no other modifications made besides subwoofer electronics and an aftermarket radio. Much Love Donut for making this video!!!
Fun fact: to say goodbye to the tsuru, Nissan Mexico made the Buen camino edition, translated from spanish it means Good road edition, which is how many spanish speaking countries wish safe travel to anyone departing

It was a bit underwhelming though, only trim bits and a unique paint tone.
And Tsurus had been de-engineered to hell by then. Only the African and middle east specs had more pieces removed or downgraded.

Bahaha. I bought my 88 in 2005 for $900 and got 4 years out of it before donating it. It got about 12mpg because of an aging carburator, but it was nearing 300,000 miles at that point.

It has its downsides but you can get some very nice cars for Sentra Money if you buy them used.

I used to live in a part of my country known as "Japan's dumpster" and you know what they say one man's garbage yada yada so I know about the second hand market. Back then you could get an early GTR R32 for 15 thou or less and 20 for a Vspec, there were Evos, WRX for days, oddities of all kinds, etc etc.
The thing is when you're looking up for an old Sentra you're looking for some specific traits, like for example having a spare pool that's _thirty_ years old or the ability to swap directly a first gen ATTESSA system and an engine (SR16VE, SR20VE/DE/DET, GA16E and more.... pick your poidon) all in one afternoon's work.
You see, the Sentra B13 is a special kind of car. Most people won't consider it a driver's car but it is. In its most modest trim it's a car that will last for over a million miles without any major issues and you can turn it into a track car after you get bored with it without feeling guilty (you don't even need to strip the interior because the 4 door clocks at 2260lb and 2 door at 2250lb roughly).

ive had three of em , first one accident but salvaged engine , second one died third one was in rough shape when i got it haha.
The first gen spec Vs were awesome. The one my dad had definitely felt way faster than the 0-60 I looked up. Ended up having to get rid of it because it never would pass and 02 sensor test. Wonder if it did have something extra.

Just bought a used 2012 SE-R Spec V today with 77k miles and I already love it!! The car is much quicker than I thought it would be and it handles really well. I fucking love the 6 speed manual gearbox. Shirts really smoothly and is really fun. Overall a super fun ride that’s still practical! I’d definitely recommend getting one!
The 1991 Sentra SE-R was sold in México as the Tsuru GSR 2000, and even was sold with a Turbocharger
they were not turbocharged, they were the same as their se-r US counterpart
@@erikrehel9208 There was a turbo version in Mexico(it include leather seats,sunroof and clarion sound system i think), along the 300zx twin turbo where the sport car of the time for nissan Mexico, cause the 240sx came after 1994 if i remember correctly
I raced one of those a long time ago in a way newer Corolla, it didn't had the GSR 2000 badges so I thought it was a normal Tsuru... Oh boy was I wrong.

Nissan never did a turbocharged variant of the sr20de in a fwd application, what you got was a swapped engine or someone converted it to turbocharged. Only blocks that were turbocharged from factory were rwd or 4wd versions like the bluebirds, pulsar gti-r, avenir and wingroads. None of them were available on the American continent

You forgot to mention that the SR20DE was produced in the B14 Sentra SE-L and 200 SX SE-R which was a 2 door Sentra that Nissan decided to call the 200 SX for some reason. Even though I agree this chassis wasn't as capable as the B13 it still may have been worth mentioning. SR20 was also still available in the B15 up until 2001 I believe, even though it wasn't SE-R trim. Anyways keep up the good work, I look forward to your videos.

Me to bought new off the lot in 06 had 23 miles when I took it home still drive it daily, and it of course has the millenial anti theft device on it the manual transmission with the reverse gear shift collar

I learned to drive stealing my aunt's B11 Sentra. No power steering homie lol.
I also used to steal my peasant spec Tsuru from my mom. It did have power steering but that is about it. Everything else was manual, windows, gears, and the stereo was just AM. I used to leave sticks marking where she parked it in the garage so that she wouldn't notice it moved.
That is until she started checking the mileage.

Missed any reference to the most popular engine swap of the B13, the SR20VE. For around $1000 you can add 50 horsepower with almost plug and play swap.

Had a '92. Added a Stillen exhaust, made a cold air intake, put on some 15" OZ wheels with BFG Comp TA 225/50-15. Looked sweet in black and tore up the mustangs and Iroc z. Still have the 3 position height adjustable Razo aluminum shift knob I put on it. Was just as good as short throw kits when it was down all the way. Should have mentioned the 200sx se-r too. Company here in Omaha even imported an all wheel drive chassis from Japan andade an awd se-r.

The smaller Clio RS and bigger Megane RS depending on generation (Clio II and Megane III); known for being the best hot hatch's around in their time and class.
Might be a bit hard to relate considering you never got them.
I grew up around the fast and furious days. I was 15 at the time. The days of the integra GSR and Civic SI. My older brother at the time hung out with a bunch of car people who loved Hondas. I swear at the time I thought it was cool with the big ol tachometers, big wing, absurd conversions of Del sol with r34 rear and Supra front etc. the days of body kits, neon lights and obnoxious exhaust fart cans. My brother didn’t have much money at the time and picked up a 1991 Sentra se-r for 2000 bucks and I grew up around loving it and being different from the Honda boys. Then he got a brand new 2003 ser spec v which really gave the 99 civic si and integra GSR a run for its money. Years down the road until I was able to get a job and save up. I got myself an 05 ser spec v for 15k. Me and my brother had similar mods but I had the better gearing ratio. I loved the thing till I was getting spanked by preludes SH, 2002 Celica gts, rsx type s. Kept it strictly Nissan even till now. Came from a spec v to 300zx TT, 350z (de) g35 sedan, g37 sedan/coupes, q50 (vq37) and now have a 2016 q60RS.
Believe me james is going to cry when #uptospeed reaches 100 episode's believe me!!

Yeah, I own an Altima SER 6mt and, it is so fun to drive. You've got a two faced car. A car super spacious, big trunk, well equipped but at the same time, you've got a sporty car with such a great exhaust note, a 6 speed manual gearbox and lots of torque, and you can feel the great rigidity and the grip of the rear suspension. It feels solid and stable, way much better than a normal Altima as its suspension is a little rigid.
R3B3L LYF3 yeah there was a 2.5L and a 3.5L for the Altima, and the SE-R was just a 3.5L with better suspension and such

Pulsar VZ-R and VZ-R N spec where top dogs of the SR16VE variety. Fugly P12 got the SR20VE and X-Trail GT got the 280ps SR20VET. Personally I like the SR20DET of 54C variety which was used in the RNN14, it was motorsport grade engine in street disguise.

@@Van_frederick I mean, considering that the run of the mill mustang GT in the early 90s mad around 204hp in the 5.0 V8, getting 140 out of a 2L 4-banger was pretty good.
It’s worth noting that they missed the fact that the SR20 was in the Sentra during the b15 generation under the SE (2.0) trim level. Tbh the Sentra SE is a better buy than the SER (for the b15 generation), especially if you can find one in manual.
@@mileshemelstrand7937 I got my hands on a 2000 G20 with a 5 speed manual, SR20DE, and limited slip. Throwing an SR20VET in and unfortunately (or fortunately) also throwing in the 6 speed LSD trans from the B15 cuz my stock tranny won't mate up.
My 1st car was a '93 E trim. The only creature comfort was a/c, not even a radio, not even holes in the metal of the back dash to put speakers! 9 grand out the door, I absolutely loved that car. If I knew how to attach a picture to this comment I would. Fast forward 25+ years later, I just got rid of my 2016 Sentra, at a loss, because I practically hated that car. Nissan has come a long way since the early '90s, but they went the wrong way.

Which isnt as much as it was b4 (curse u, moped slushbox!).. Current maximas r nice rides but the moped gearbox ruined it. If I am the engineer of that car it gotta have at least a twin clutch auto just like its French cousins had.

The B15 Spec V destroyed it's generational Si competitor (Ep3 Si).
The B16 Spec V is on par with the 8th and even 9th Gen si. These cars make 220whp after tunes and upgrades, also the engine was redesigned by the same person that did the VQ. The chassis and suspension was also tuned on the Nurburgring.
How did you forget one of the main upgrades from SE-R to Spec V; the 6 Speed! That is literally the only strong point of the car because it’s the same strength gearbox as 5.5/6 Gen VQ powered Maximas- very stout. Better ratios for the 02-06 Spec V gearbox and same LSD as V6 cars. Great components you didn’t even mention.
Kenneth Powers I'm here trying to determine if the SE-R I just bought is a Spec V or just an SE-R. Would you know how to figure that out? Is it indicated in the vin#? Any advice or knowledge you are able to share would be much appreciated. -Thanks
@@bayareakat66 Easy. If it’s a 5 speed or an auto trans it’s an SE-R, if it’s a 6 speed it’s a Spec V.
Same goes for rest of Latin America besides Mexico in South America it was called Nissan V16 it was made till 2017

my younger brothers' first car was a b15 spec-v, I drove it all the time. now a kid down the road owns it and I miss it so much lol
The first gen spec Vs were awesome. The one my dad had definitely felt way faster than the 0-60 I looked up. Ended up having to get rid of it because it never would pass and 02 sensor test. Wonder if it did have something extra.

Not quite, the B12 is a very respectable car in many ways. It's basically a proto B13 that came announcing what is coming in the future pretty much in the same the way the R31 did with the Skyline bloodline.
