The Sony is nice when it works. I’ve had RX100iii, Rx100iv, and RX100V. No, I got them not because I’m rich and bought a newer model when it came out. I got a newer model because the old one started having problems. Always the flash was the first to stop working because it’s thin and fragile power supply lines broke. Then the autofocus followed. I always set the image quality fairly high, about 10M for each photo on average. The result was excellent even when the images were blown up to fill a 65” TV. Now all the photos I take look good on the camera but grainy on a 17” notebook, looking more like 2M photos. I checked the property of these photos and they all still occupied an average of 10M space each. I really like the overall performance of RX100 series over Canon cameras although I always prefer the color of the Canon. Now I realize that I have to start to argue why I have to buy a new Sony in less than two years. I’m going to get a Canon this time and see if it lasts longer.
Canon is often a step (or two (or three)) behind in overall tech, but when it comes to their premium compacts I've always liked them over Sony for one simple reason: handling. The grip, the physical controls, the menu layout -- all of this just leaves Sony in the dust. It's really odd because the RX10 lineup has great controls, so at least someone at Sony knows what they are doing.
If you are using a USB-C microphone? Would it work? Just curios because the camera has USB-C port, right? I saw a USB-C wireless mic from Boya BY-WM3U. It works on USB-C phones why not even on this device? :))
A nice little photo camera, but more odd decisions by Canon. They would have been better off stuffing one of their APS-C DPAF sensors in there and only using some of it, haha (although the battery life would be laughable in that case). I'd like something similar to a M100 with an ultra thin retractable lens around 20mm on the wide end, and the other bits like a mic port with flip up screen. They have the capability, but they keep producing odd mixes of features.
I really don't get your enthusiasm on this camera. The vlogging footage in the wood was totally out of focus! Did not you see this? Adding the more than bad battery performance, I will stick to my old and more robust LX100 (the first one, the cheap one). Btw the "normal" 4K is definitely not crispy.
I am torn between the G5X Mark ii and the G1X Mark iii and the G7X Mark iii. My wife and I will simply use the camera for hiking images, paddling images, and images on our trips. We have little interest. Having vide in the camera is certainly nice, however I expect our video use will be minimal, if at all. I am leaning toward the G5X Mark ii, but I would certainly appreciate your thoughts on our choice. MANY THANKS!!!
great video! I cant decide between the g5x mark ii and the rx100 vii ... like the colors from canon cameras, but autofocus of the sony is much better... what do you recommend?
@@thisiserich Thank you for sharing this. This is a great new! I have ordered mine and it will arrive in a fews days. This will be my first Canon camera (coming from Sony A7iv) and I was quite afraid of my purchase decision hearing the autofocus issue of G5X Mark 2. Glad that they fixed it with an update.
The G7x Mark III received criticism for its unreliable autofocus and a firmware update by Canon that was perceived as a hasty fix. This is why I've decided against purchasing this camera. Now, I'm looking into the G5x Mark II and wondering if its autofocus is reliable. It would be the ideal compact camera for travel if it had dual pixel autofocus.
You weren't kidding when you said it was expensive! I get the concept behind this level of point n shoot cameras. But, I keep thinking a used mirrorless camera offers better bang for your buck. Maybe it's a photo vs video thing.....click😂 At any rate, good vid!
It absolutely delivers more bang for your buck. There are way better ways to spend $900 unless you absolutely need some specific things from this camera.
For the less money you can get a LX 100 II that shoots 4K for 15 min or more with some hacking and large sd card. Or get a GX9 with lens image stabilization for a super smoth video and unlimited 4k recording. They both cost less than a G5X mk III
I shoot mostly stills and I want to upgrade from the G5X since the extra focal length is intriguing, as well as the digic 8 processor and the compactness. As far as the long end is concerned, what is the sweet spot? f6.3? f8? And is it soft at f2.8 at the long end?
Another great video mate... Just wondering how AF performance is for general video on surroundings & scenery (not people/faces). I rarely film myself & mainly need the fast lens, so (price aside) it seems like a great camera? Thanks...
A year ago I spoke with a Canon rep and he indicated that Canon cannot allow 24 fps any longer because it could take sales away from their cinema cameras. So that's what you'll be seeing in the future - Canon's cinema cameras will record 24 fps, and the other cameras will have it disabled. Yes, Canon is Actually _That_ Stupid™️ They don't realize that people will just go buy some other camera from a different brand.
I'm searching for a "expert compact" that is light but make really great pictures(I like the 1.8/2.8 aperture, nice wide angle, weight and integrated ND filter). I mostly do photography, during big hikes. 2 years and half after, would you still recommend this? Or should I hold a bit because something else is coming soon? Or there is another better solution? Thanks!
What did you end up going with? Just got the G5XII. So far its great for portraits. Really good keep rate on those. The flash is surprisingly good Landscapes not so much; hit and miss. Sweet spot for the lense seems to be F5.6. At 24mm images are soft IMO also at F11 which is the highest F stop - really lousy. I would recommend you get something with an APS-C for hiking. That will have better dynamic range for landscapes. Maybe a Sony 6400.
Not liking the AF. Also not liking the lack of an audio jack. Can record the audio and match that to the video but that's another step. Rather get a small mirror less than these point and shoots IMHO. Thumbs up on the video. Editing content right now as watching this for my skanky little channel.
i like this camera, my only issue is that nearly all the indoor photos are at ISO 6400 (even @ f1.8)... i shoot in Av mode and without the flash... I'm sure my old sony rx100 Va never had this issue...
As I am shooting videos underwater (I assume an uw housing will be available for that camera soon) for me it is crucial that I can set manual white balance as quickly as possible, having to press not more than 2 or 3 buttons. The G7X M1 was great with this. The M2 was useless as one has to go through 7 buttons to set white balance. How about that G5X M2..? Anyone who knows how to set WB manually?
The reason it does not have dual pixel AF is because it's using a Sony sensor. Canon does not manufacture it's own 1 inch sensors, it buys it from Sony. That's no excuse tho, for the price this should AF perfectly.
It could have been fantastic camera but...rock solid AF is one flaw, and second - this SLOW ZOOM they tend to make all the time. Why they don't make an improvement and make it adjustable with fingers so that ~ half ring turn changes it from tele to wide.
soginvl Kinda weird. It was mostly bad while he was hand holding/walking around. Seemed even grainy to me. You would think compression would effect the entire video, not just part of it.
It might be like the rx100 vii that it goes to 10 minutes but you just wait 2 seconds and you can record another 10 minutes because it is a little bigger so that might help

I can’t get the Fujifilm over heat issues, recording length. The X-3T getting big. The newest Rx100...not a very fast lens still. Disappointing.
I am firmly on Canon's side in trying to kill off 24 fps. It's an outdated standard that doesn't run natively on most displays today. Anyone that continues to publish in 24 fps needs to stop. I like to shoot in it though and publish at 30 just to give it a built in 25% speed up.
Next m series supposed to have hfr due for release the project named nachos but natchos with what?as a photographer wish apsc to 30 or more mp v stuck on the 24 mp everyone 20 compact 24 apsc bump that up and long reach beast
Depending on your lens and aperture setting (or the camera if we're talking about a point and shoot) this can be normal. It's called a vignette and it's usually automatically corrected when shooting in JPG and it can also be corrected with editing if you're into that. If you're shooting manual, try playing around with aperture setting. If it's a zoom lens you can also try zooming in or out as that can affect it as well. Lastly, if you're using an interchangeable lens camera, you can also try a different lens! Ultimately it's just one of those things that comes down to lens design.
andyhoov it’s the canong5x. I don’t experience it with my dslr. Wondered if it was normal for this model. I’ve shoot both jpeg and raw. Yes it does not happen in jpeg. How is it fixed in editing other than cropping?
@@CottageCupcake As luck would have it, I also have a G5X, though I use it more for video and casual shooting, so I've never really played around with the raw files. So I did a little test, and yes, at the wide end of the zoom I had very heavy vignetting, and also quite pronounced distortion, both of which were automatically fixed in the jpgs. Yeah, I think this is normal for the camera. Most vignetting is just a little bit of darkness in the corners and can usually be fixed with the lens correction tool in your editing software, however when it's this heavy it can be quite difficult. Most software has automatic correction for a variety of lenses and cameras, so I'd check if you program has a preset for the camera. The good news, however, is that when I zoomed in the vignetting disappeared, so I think the problem might be exclusive to the wide angle.
andyhoov thank you for doing the test. I didn’t know if the camera was faulty. I just purchased it. I’m impressed with the jpeg quality, but wanted it for the raw and portability, don’t like my phone pictures 🥴
Sooo...does it takes pictures as well? So tired to search for a review on a camera that doesn't focus on vlogging but on pictures. The self-obsession of this world is off the charts. 😑
what would you recommend? A G7x mark II or g5x mark II
I'll go for G5X II for 4K video.
I just returned a Sony RX100 III for this camera, which I think is MUCH better!

It’s really hard for these cameras to compete with Sony’s RX100 line, especially at the price point.
(And I say this as a Canon fan)
I just wish they could get it down to 2.8 for the zoom on the sonys
Strange that I seen people swaping there rx 100 for gx7 better picture quality and plenty uoads that show it
i like the canon colors so id opt for the G5x myself
Why is Canon eliminating the 24 fps?
"Courage."
Next thing you know they will be leaving out the headphone jack.
(Oh...riiiight.)
Next thing they leave out the Sensor and you have to change the plates manually.. 🥴
Please compare Sony rx100 va vs Canon g5x mark II. I’m torn between these 2 cameras. Thank you!

Why did Canon not include an external mic jack? Does the G5 X Mk II have auto focus issues like the G7 X Mk III?

Canon releasing new products and still leaving out features? Ya don't sayyyyy

Good choice if you’re just making TikTok videos all day. 🤷🏻♀️
The only thing I’m confused about is your t-shirt choice. 🤷🏻♀️
You should test this camera again now that it has new firmware that improved the autofocus and added 24p.

No 24p and no Dual Pixel AF I will pass!I really hope Canon doesnt strip back features on the 90D when its released!
tm4tare Agreed. It would be a HUGE miss if Canon omitted 24fps in the 90D. Eagerly waiting for the end of the month to find out.
