  • In todays video I review what is now an old camera. I take a look at the Canon G5X to see if this older 1" sensor camera can compete with newer models.

THanks so much for this informative 2023 review. I'm trying to establish how well my G5X (that I've always loved) measures up today and if I should shoot a stop-motion animation with it - or use my phone's camera. You've resold me on a camera I already own! A great perk about this camera is that it doesn't call attention to itself when travelling. It just looks like a simple point and shoot. Also, I've had many people surprised when they've seen photos from this camera. They ask me, "You shot these photos with THAT camera?" in a doubtful tone. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Off to do some camera tests. Have a great day and thanks again!

just bought one today second hand on eBay and now found this.... so pleased i made the right decision and figured this ticked an awful lot of boxes and the lens spec looked good and Canon menu's renowned for being easy to navigate... thank you

This vid helped me a lot. Just found my G5 x- buried in the house for 5 yrs!
Your box ticking exercise chimes with mine!
The results from the 5x are so much sharper than phone cameras. Many thanks..... Jack

I upgraded to G5X Mark 1 from G7X Mark 1, and I have to say it's a step up. It has the same sensor and lens, but its autofocus is a lot more reliable and accurate. g7X has unpredictable autofocus that is often focusing to far ahead or something. Just not spot on like G5X. What I enjoy more is its new interface which works a lot better with touchscreen than G7X's. The biggest game changer is the EVF. Bright sunny day or needing to use your head to further stabilise the camera in low light, or get the camera that bit further from your subject in crammed spaces, EVF proves invaluable. I use EVF very often. It also helps me isolate distraction and see what I have in the picture. Not to say, the hot shoe is also a big plus for external flash. Images are nice and detailed. I love it and carry it everyday to take photos of my child.

I read that the EVF really protrudes. Is it possible to carry the camera in your jeans pocket for a couple of hours?

@@mayanksharma7513 Look at the design of the cam. That is not a problem. The body is quite sturdy.

Thank you, that was a helpful video. I was thinking of an Olympus Stylus 1, but I might give this G5x a go.

This is just the video I needed, I found one of these and a G7x mark ii, for the same price, and I think I'll buy the g5x, thank you very much!

I had one years ago, and look back at those pictures, and I am amazed at how nice they are. However, I was bothered by the small buffer and how slow it got sometimes when I was trying to shoot some kids sports. But the photos look great, especially macro really amazing sometimes. Video was good too. I am still thinking about the Mark 2.

I got one of these about a year (?) ago. I really wanted something compact with a view finder, and a fast-ish lens. I think it is great.

3 good used retailer recommendations - i have noticed Canon cameras used have shot up in the last year, has anyone else?

This video got me thinking...since my rx100iii died, rather than spending a ton, I did find a G5X in great shape for only 300 euros and bought it. My previous frustrations with buffer won't be an issue now that the kids have given up sports!

I have the mark2 version, yea it sure has a better buffer and a little extra focal length, but things I hated drove me crazy, losing the focal point and not being able to find it in sunlight was the straw that broke the camels back. I watched this video and picked up a brand new mark 1. Love the tillty screen, no more lost focal point. Love the EVF, no more grabbing camera and picking out the eye thing. The mark 2 will fit in a smaller pocket but it feels like a downgrade now I own the mark I

Does the mark 1 fit in your jeans pocket? I've heard the EVF really sticks out. That's the only thing holding me back from buying it.

    • @newblor

@@mayanksharma7513 It will fit, but it's not really a trouser / shorts pocket camera. It'll be uncomfortable for any length of time. The G9X II is the smallest true pocket camera (I think this is still correct) with a 1" sensor that sits around this price point second hand if you're lucky. Picture quality is mostly similar to the G5X for everyday shooting and it is no problem in most pockets but has a slower, softer lens, less range and no EVF. The G7X III would be your best bet for pocket fit and similar but better performance + 4K video - but it'll cost more and I suspect most people are interested in the G5X for the EVF and stills over recording.

I have this camera and love it but I wish it performed better in low light. I was thinking of selling it now that I have the Canon R7 but I love the small size so you have convinced me to keep it.

I am satisfied with the results of this camera, but the experience during the shooting process is very disappointing. The processor is frustratingly slow and focusing is also slow.

Unfortunately the market for compact cams is dead... Look at the stores: Dozends of people are hanging around smartphones and noone can be found at the compact cam desk. So we need to have a look at the second hand market. For me G5x is the best always-on camera. Yes and let's be honest, nobody sees the difference in quality of the pictures whether they were taken with a good compact camera or with a sinfully expensive SLR camera.

It will fit loose fitting jeans front and rear pockets, but the the eye cup protrusion will make it challenging to get into and out of a pocket. A Sony RX100 is an easier slip in IMHO.

I syill love my g5x. Its not the greatest video camera but its so much fun to take pics with and its easy to carry around. My only knock is that I would love an easier way to upload pics through wifi to my computer, google drive, and facebook. Right now I'm using my phone as a go between.
I manly use my camera for taking macro shots of my figure painting and for traveling. The photo quality is just great for me but unless canon gives me the same features as this camera but with better connectivity and better video features I'm not interested. High quality 1080p is a million times more important then 4k that overheats cameras and eats up gobs of memory. IMO most people don't want of need 4k because of the memory requirements but we all have 1080p TVs and good quality 1080p can still look great on 4k.
I picked yo my 5x refurbed a year after it came out on a great deal from amazon. I went with this model because it still had the view finder. And yes I probably take 80 percent of my pics with the articulated screen (its so damned convenient) when I want to use a view finder NOTHING still replaces it,
If canon could remove the need of using my phone as a go between in getting my pics to my computer, google drive, and apps like facebook and instgram without having to use my phone or a clunky and terrible canon app as a go between they'd have a real winner IMO. Most people don't need a resolution or high ISo monster. If they could give you the 5x in a more attractively colored body (using ANY color besides black would probably help with those overheat issues as well) that easily uploaded pics to their fav thing but covered you the ease of use and still very good picture quality of this camera and keep the price under 6 or 700 bucks I think they'd sell allot of cameras.
You also NEED to be able to use it as a web cam.
My phone is convenient. But If you offered a camera like the 5x that is very fun to use, good quality 1080p video with all the connectivity ease of use you get with a phone today they would have a real winner. convenient (lightish, compact) good quality (,(as good as or better then the best iPhone on the market) connectivity (easy to connect and upload you work) and fun (camera looks good (either retro and/or colors) and easy to use controls BUT the ability to do so much more like you can with the manual capbilty, zoom, articulated screen and view finder).
