NGL, Monaca feels almost...human in Danganronpa S, pretty much hints that it was Junko's manipulation that turned her into the despair fanatic that she was, well aside from the WoH still hating adults

I think a lot of people disregard the fact that Junko heavily manipulated and used Monaca more than any of the Warriors of Hope since she was interested on the Towa corporation and Monaca was a direct link to that. Monaca was being abused by her brother and father and then magically was getting affection by an older figure who was really using her. And Monaca was smart enough to realize that was the case, but she let herself be used as long as she got cared for in return. It really is sad. I wonder how Monaca would've turned out if Junko never influnced her but someone like Makoto did instead. Lowkey dissapointed we didn't get to see it in this event since its clear she is still heavily idolizing Junko....
You also have to realize Monaca and the other WoH would’ve taken their own lives already if it wasn’t for Junko, thanks to them no longer being able to handle the abuse they were going through. She stopped them and took them in, for her evil plans in UDG-and that’s how they all met and learned to idolize her, Monaca especially.
In this game, the kids are clearly still alive and mentally healthy enough to still have fun on this trip. Junko also says she’s gotten bored with despair and decided to see what hope is like in this game… so putting that together, does that mean Junko’s whole “hope” phase started before this trip, and she ended up stopping the WoH from committing thanks to that?
Junko’s naturally charismatic and can easily come off as nice and caring toward people when she feels like-so even if her only ulterior motive in DRS is “I wanna see what hope is like,” the kids are at least better off in that regard.
The five kids still hate adults, but they still love Junko, and tolerate a few people, like Komaru and Maki. But Kotoko’s last event with Komaru is pretty sad-Komaru looks forward to coming back home after this trip to see her family again, but Kotoko sighs and says Komaru doesn’t understand a thing, implying she has nothing to look forward to when she has to go back home.
It’s really tragic, especially when Komaru only learns so little about the kids in this game, and admits she feels powerless to do much to get through to them. It feels more realistic in this specific universe, even if it sucks seeing the kids suffer like this.
It’s actually pretty realistic. I don’t mind this game going this route because of that. In the real world, we barely notice abuse victims all the time and are about as powerless as Komaru when it comes to trying to talk to them. We can’t read people’s minds and know every detail of why they’re suffering, especially when they act as threatening or rambunctious as the WoH do at times.
We do at least get some moments where we get to see the kids happy with some of the other students though. But it also makes a lot of their interactions feel bittersweet, knowing how transient all these interactions will be for them.
Junko is still one of the only people that cares about them, even if Monaca knows she’s being used (just for much less sinister reasons; she still *wants* to like despair, but can’t bring herself to thanks to this hope phase she’s in, so she’s a relatively normal person here) and the few students that do try to reach out to them, like Mikan, Nagito, Komaru… struggle, since the kids are either too guarded to vent or admit much. At best, the kids get to enjoy this trip with a lot of good memories as a distraction from their rough home lives and maybe come out of it realizing not all teenagers and adults are bad people.
And sometimes that’s the most you can really do with cases like these. At the very least, it does open up opportunities for fans to write and draw more self-indulgent rewrites and fanart of these events, and show the WoH being able to communicate all their problems to proper, overcoming their abusers with the help of some of the other good-hearted characters.

@@kurtcobainbong Regardless she manipulated her classmates and friends long before she met Junko. Personally, I don’t hate her, but at least I am willing to understand why other people do. Monaca’s background exist for people to understand why she does what she does not for justifying it. That can same apply to Tenko, Byakuya, Hiyoko, Toko, and many other characters in the cast. Ruruka did some terrible things because of her own insecurities, and while I do pity her I’m not gonna say to justify it.
@@komarunaegi7460 I do realize that without Junko, they would've taken their own lives. But that doesn't take away the fact that it was Junko who pushed them to the edge in UDG on purpouse for her own personal gain. Sure, they already were tramutized enough to hold hatred towards adults but that doesn't take the fact that Junko is instilling a very unhealthy mentality onto the kids, especially Monaca. I was refelecting on how different it wouldve been if another character took Junko's steed, take Makoto or any other light hearted character for example: if they were the ones to help the kids before Junko, think about how different their mentalities would be. They would learn to not grow to hate all adults and Monaca wouldn’t have seeked the despair that Junkos tried so hard to instill on her. Junko helped them for the sole purpouse of manipulating them and therefore making Monaca and the rest take an extremely dark path that kids shouldn't take, and she did this because it would benefit her own self, she overexploited the childrens trauma and hatred for adults for her own personal gain. Junko literally told Monaca to be a "develish little girl" in one of these events, is that really an okay mentality to instill on a girl? I don't think so.

@Goofy Ga Shine i think she did genuinely care about junko and the warriors in her own twisted way. Junko killed her loved ones to cause herself despair and i think monaca tried to emulate that. I like her more than junko but my opinion on them are similar: theyre both horrible people that have done evil things but DAMN theyre both amazing villains. Monaca is more sympathetic than junko bc of her backstory but that doesnt make her less evil. I think if we spent more time getting to know junkos backstory and how she interacts with ppl that arent her sister or from dr3 id like her more. But yeah monacas an S tier character for me.
The thing that always amazes yet horrifies me about this franchise is that it has some wholesome relatable moments and then some screwy, WTF moments and implications that don’t hit as awfully as they should because of the art style.
