- "Man with a Stick" is a documentary feature film that challenges the notion of long-distance hike as a bizarre way of enjoyment and a sense of achievement. The title character is a thru-hiker who made a decision to decouple from his normal life, step out of his comfort zone and challenge himself walking the Camino del Norte in August and September 2018 across Northern Spain.
Over the course of his thru-hike he ruminates the simplicity of life while walking long-distance, both mental and physical challenges on the way, the reasons why we hike, patience, experience of pain and a strong connection to the trail. Hiking allows thinking and reflecting, experiencing solitude and freedom and enjoying the uplifting scenic beauty and wildlife.
Undoubtedly, hiking with a silent friend who guided him over many hills and mountains and gave him wings to soar made the end of the challenging walk more fulfilling.

One stick is OK but TWO 'sticks', proper flexible walking poles are even better. I used them at hip level so I could lever my 74 year-old body uphill and use them as life-saving supports downhill. You are correct, the walk from Soto de Luina to Cadevedo was easily the hardest on the whole camino. Nine steep descents and ascents. Sometimes you could only traverse parts of the descents on your backside on wet, rocky paths. There was a high, mountain option but it was closed due to bad weather. Very well done anyway. I would never try this walk staying in albergues.....need my rest and own bathroom.
This is a wonderful presentation of the Camino del Norte. While stunning in the beauty of the coast and mountains, this looks to be one tough camino. I am waiting for the virus to abate so I can begin my camino, but will be walking further south, perhaps very south and will be facing epic sun rather than epic mud. I thought it was a bit daring to include the bullfight, since both inside of Spain and throughout the world there is plenty of discussion on the subject. Yet, it is part of the culture of Spain, and of the places you passed through. I thought your even tone in describing it was the reasonable way. The path through the Asturian countryside was spectacular. All in all, I enjoyed the scenery and route plus your commentary on the inside track that goes on with hiking long distances.

Thanks for a delighted comment. I am also on the lookout for another Camino this year in August. Walking has always been one of our favorite ways to move in nature. It is a slow habitual mode of travel and a state - in which the mind, the body, and the nature are aligned.
Hiking allows enjoying the feeling of being close to nature and being relaxed and enjoying the uplifting scenic beauty and wildlife that characterizes the routes. Thru-hiking enables enjoy the scenery, the experience of solitude and freedom and reflect. Solitary walking allows undergoing various experiences. We can do it!

Thank you so much for the documentary of high quality. The Camino indeed reflects the real ordinary challenges of life and you showed a way to look at it in the appropriate way - simple and plain. I have seen the east to west shore line route and the south to north route forming your ' Way of the Cross' . Now watching the documentary along the more popular route. Indeed a very fruitful way to live a pilgrims life with your documentaries.

This grandpa is a huge inspiration. I was afraid of doing the Norte because it is longer and more physically rigorous than the CF. But if a man much older than me has done it, it gives me hope that I'll manage too. You are indeed an inspiration🙏

Thank you for your wonderful story, beautifully narrated. So many memories of my French and Portuguese Caminos. Some tiggers for me when watching this documentary on a screen included the sound of the cow bells, the rhythmic click of the stick on the path and the Celtic pipes. At first I thought this film would be too long for me to watch...then I remembered, the Camino insists patience, and delivers rewards few will experience, but you pray many will. The advice regarding the long stretches of paved roads is a gift because my wife and I plan to walk the Camino Norte in 2022, depending on COVID, and God willing of course. I’m thinking of starting from Biarritz airport on Bayonne also as that is where I land. 28kms to Irun. Do you suggest this? And any tips?

You touch my soul with this journey and your words. Bravo my friend. I would like to do a first Camino in 2022 but feel I physically may not be able too and because of age, however I look at you and you are an inspiration.
Both mental and physical strengths are significant. But for most people, the physical challenges don’t keep people off the trail. Mental strength is what keeps you motivated. Without mental strength you never get physically strong. You can do it! Go for it!
@@nalutia8442 thank you Sir. I had double knee replacements last year, so by the time I want to go it will be 2 1/2 years post OP. I will be 64 then. I have a strong constitution and I used to cycle for 6 years but it's been some time with that. I suppose like you have often said, it's one foot in front of the other, praying with the feet. Szanowny Panie Krzysztofie, dziękuję Panu za kolejny film; drugi materiał wydawał się zakończeniem tematu Camino - z dołu mapy do góry i w poprzek. W zasadzie rozwiązał Pan dylemat "walker or pillgrim" i obawiałem się, że to koniec. Chwała Panu za trzeci marsz i za podzielenie się refleksjami i obrazami ze szlaku. Wszystkie Pana filmy o Camino de Santiago de Compostella głęboko mnie poruszyły, byłem na kilku pielgrzymkach na trasie Warszawa-Jasna Góra, no i miałem się za mocnego faceta; potem obejrzałem sobie Pański marsz z Sevilli ... . Droga Francuska też była wspaniała, chyba najpełniejsza co do refleksji i dla mnie ważne - z rozstrzygnięciem dylematu "pielgrzym czy wędrowiec". Ja się miałem od początku za pielgrzyma, dopóki nie zdałem sobie sprawy, że ekwipunek, nawyki, odruchy i myślenie, które wtedy miałem zdecydowanie klasyfikują mnie raczej jako turystę, czy survivalowca, bo moje noclegi były w namiocie, stodole, rowie, pod wozem, itd. Już na trzeciej pielgrzymce ten temat mnie męczył - kim ja właściwie jestem na tym szlaku "rekolekcji w drodze". Chodziłem w akademickiej grupie jezuicko-harcerskiej; program formacyjny był mocny, ale w końcu zawsze wyłaził ze mnie wędrowiec. Jasna Pani z Częstochowy niech mi to wybaczy. Trzeci Pana marsz daje nadzieję, że u Pana ze zdrowiem już wszystko ok, czego z serca życzę, bo mam nadzieję, że jest jeszcze kilka dróg do grobu Św. Jakuba, które na Pana czekają. Niech dobry Bóg tam Pana doprowadzi, a mnie przyniesie kolejny film. Ściskam dłoń, Witold Kosarewicz,

Pielgrzymowanie sprzyja kultywowaniu cierpliwosci jak i pozytywnych zmian zachodzacych w naszym zyciu. Pielgrzymowanie takze zmienia nas. Zmienia - poprzez udoskonalanie nas, akceptowanie siebie i transformacje. Doswiadczenia z pielgrzymowania wzbogacaja nie tylko nasze zycie ale takze zycie tych ktorzy sa dookola nas. Z pewnoscia oni korzystaja najbardziej bedac blisko tej nowej osoby. Osoby ktora ma wiecej pewnosci siebie, zyczliwosci i zrozumienia.
Pielgrzymowanie to dlugodystansowa podroz do swietego miejsca zwiazana jednoczesnie z poszukiwaniem samego siebie a takze moralnych i duchowych wartosci. Thru-hiking jest takze dlugodystansowa podroza do miejsc specjalnego znaczenia. Thru-hiking jest zatem wspolczesna forma swieckiej pielgrzymki.
Niestety obecnie z powodu pandemii musze odlozy podroz szlakiem Camino del Salvador i Camino Primitivo.

I ja dziękuję za odpowiedź - nic dodać, nic ująć. Tak, u mnie to były jednak pielgrzymki, w sensie duchowym; z nastawieniem czysto religijnym nie miałem większych problemów, zważywszy klimat, w którym mnie wychowano; pierwszy raz to była dziękczynna pielgrzymka za wybudowanie domu, trochę zepsuta wypadkiem i przejechaniem części drogi samochodem logistycznym, co z kolei ambicjonalnie wymagało dokończenia pełnej trasy pieszej następnego roku, i tak poszło z rozpędu jeszcze kilka razy.
Te marsze, blisko natury, zawsze były rodzajem doświadczenia wewnętrznego, tak jak Pan to ujął - poszukiwania samego siebie, naprawy ciemnych zakątków duszy, zdobycia przyczółków do lepszego życia z bliskimi; to wszystko potwierdzała moja Żona, po każdym powrocie.
Ciekawa jest koncepcja "świeckiej pielgrzymki", którą może stać się długi marsz, z reguły samotny, albo dłuższy pobyt w dziczy (naturze). W ostatnich latach oglądałem dużo różnych materiałów z najdłuższych szlaków amerykańskich i relacje z życia w głuszy alaskańskiej przez pojedynczych ludzi lub rodziny, żyjące samotnie w autentycznej przyrodzie, pracujące i budujące swe życie w zgodzie z samymi sobą i otoczeniem. Bez względu na to, czy wędrowcy po AT, PCT, CST lub mieszkańcy alaskańskiego rezerwatu prezentowali nastawienie religijne, czy świeckie - zawsze poszukiwali czegoś większego i wyższego od własnego "ja"; Bob Harte wprost odwoływał się do Boga, rodzina Seldenów nawiązywała do Matki Natury, ale w tle była zawsze pokora i poszukiwanie czegoś wyższego. Młodziaki typu Dixie, ludzie doświadczeni okolicznościami życia jak IT BAT, jakkolwiek wolni od konotacji religijnych szli przed siebie ze świadomością uczestniczenia w czymś o wiele większym, niż tylko skalisty, czy błotnisty szlak "przed siebie".
Nawiasem mówiąc znalazłem także film Dixie o Camino; śmieszyły mnie jej uwagi o dziwności szlaków i zwyczajów europejskich, denerwowało odczuwalne poczucie wyższości przy zestawianiu odległości pokonywanych w ramach wędrówek po Stanach i po Europie, niemniej i u tej przedstawicielki mocno młodego pokolenia widoczne były wątki duchowe, refleksja nad rolą wędrówki w rozwoju duchowym i przywiązanie do metody samodoskonalenia przy pomocy machania nogami naprzód.
Co do kolejnych Pana pielgrzymek - po obejrzeniu Człowieka z Kijem - nie miałem wątpliwości, że będą następne (czego z serca życzę); ta pandemiczna zaraza przewróciła do góry nogami wiele planów i pomysłów na rok bieżący (daj Boże tylko ten), ale Człowiekiem Drogi to Pan już chyba został na trwałe, i dobrze, bo będą następne marsze.
Kwestia kija przywołała moje doświadczenia, wieloletnie, chadzania z kijem - oczywiście mierzonym "pod brodę". U mnie z czasem ten kij stał się koniecznością, ze względu na postępującą dysfunkcję kolana; musiałem przejść na dwa kijki marszowe, bo jeden dodatkowy punkt podparcia, mimo częstej zmiany rąk, pogłębiał dysproporcję mięśniową nóg, potrzebna okazała się większa symetria. Ale z kijami jestem zaprzyjaźniony do dzisiaj, krótsze trasy zawsze z kijem.
Jeżeli to nie marudzenie i zawracanie głowy, to jestem niezmiernie ciekaw Pańskiej listy sprzętowej; zmniejszanie wagi kolejnych plecaków (chyba ciągle ten sam model 30- litrowy?), zdaje się z 14, 10 do 6,5 kg, świadczy o kolejnych eliminacjach elementów wyposażenia. Co Pan wywalił? Sprzęt filmowy zauważyłem, ale dalsze kilogramy to ciekawostka. Taka moja mania, to noże, ciekaw jestem jakie "ostre" towarzyszyło Panu na Camino (tu mam autentycznego hopla „z przerzutką”, stale noszę nadmiarowe żelastwo, fixedy, toole, foldery, to jest nieleczalne, podobnie jak kolano, wiele lat tolerujące trzydziestokilogramowe systemy nośne, w tym ulubione typu ALICE, czyli sortowe wyposażenie US Army). Doświadczenia z nogą odchudziły mój sprzęt, z sortów armijnych przeszedłem na 50 litrowego Ospreya Stratosa i chlebak Maxpedition Octa, ale poniżej 15 kg nie umiem się spakować na więcej niż dwa dni w terenie.
Kwestie sprzętowe będą przed panem na Camino Primitivo (chyba nie chodzi o „prymityw” szlaku, ale o jego pierwszeństwo w czasie powstania?). Tak czy inaczej to droga mocno górska, podobno z o wiele mniejszą liczbą zorganizowanych noclegów, co zatem z nocowaniem?).
Proszę wybaczyć to moje „ciekawstwo”, ale tych kilkadziesiąt odsłon Pana filmów bardzo mnie zbliżyło do treści, które Pan przekazuje, zwłaszcza w sferze werbalnej każdego z materiałów. Bardzo bliski jest mi np. Pański akcent, absolutnie podobny do sposobu wypowiedzi bardzo bliskiej mi osoby z rodziny żony, nie wspominając o sylwetce, sposobie poruszania się i mówienia. Te Pańskie filmy są dla mnie wielką pociechą i pomocą w nieciekawych chwilach, które ostatnio towarzyszą mnie i mojej Żonie; jeszcze raz dziękuję Panu, że zadał Pan sobie trud zmontowania i emisji tych materiałów.

on the Northern way. I enjoyed watching this video and de la Plata, too.
But what surprises me is the videos you shot yourself. How could you
do it alone? Did you set the phone and then return again to fetch it ? it takes a lot of time
and energy I guess. Also it can quickly fill your memory card, at least it did mine.

Thank you kindly. I appreciate your comment. Documenting a journey and telling the story through the eye of my camera is not easy task. Yes, I set-up my camera on the tripod and simply walked away. More difficult issues are controlling the composition, light, focus, exposure and framing. You are right that shooting the footage is time consuming. Frequent unpacking and packing the camera gear and taking the scenes footage may sometimes be exasperating. It is not equal to resting.
My documentaries are a one-man show. I wrote, filmed, and edited everything myself and shot the footage while thru-hiking Caminos in Spain. I had five 64 GB memory cards.

There’s no doubt that hiking is physically challenging. Between the steep ups and downs, slick roots, muddy trail, slippery rocks, chilling water crossings, muscles or joints fatigue, blisters and a constant battle with the weather, there’s something that pushes you physically at just about every turn.

Y con Denominación de Origen cientos , además.de cervezas y sidras.
Hay vino en Galicia, asturias, Euskadi,Navarra Aragón Cataluña,LA RIOJA,Castilla León , la Mancha, Andalucía ,Murcia Valencia Baleares y Canarias. Cantabria.Etremadura.
En el Camino de la Plata me llamó la atención que no se encontrará con toros Bravos, pues desde Sevilla a Salamanca está lleno de ellos. Eso sí en semi libertad, no como otras ganaderías que están encerrados rodeados de excrementos y sin poder.casi moverse.

What is the best camino to walk?
The Camino de Santiago begins from many cities in Spain, France, and Portugal. The best-known and most popular route is probably the "French Way". Its usually recommended for first timers , people with children, etc. But there are other popular Camino de Santiago routes like the "North and Portuguese Way". The "Primitive Way" and "Via de la Plata" (silver) are also very beautiful
and not as crowded. The "English Way" is the shortest.

My heritage goes half and half.....parental mountains and maternal mountains.....one the Picos de Europa, the other the northern litoral.....greener perhaps but not as fierce.....
Señor Peregrino, vi su reportate del camino de la Plata. Podia haber muerto, fue una locura, he de regalañarle por haberlo hecho.
No se puede hacer eso en verano en España. junio, julio y agosto no se puede hacer el camino de la Plata. Y menos personas mayores.
Es ideal Abril y mayo y Octubre Noviembre.

Sí, la espléndida música incluida en las películas documentales que grabé mientras caminaba por varias regiones de España.
Me desafié eligiendo deliberadamente caminar Via de la Plata y Camino Sanabres durante los meses más calurosos en el verano junio y julio. ¿Por qué? Porque quería experimentar Extremadura, la tierra de los conquistadores, la tierra de Francisco Pizzaro, Hernán Cortés, Diego de Almargo.

Great to see you vlog the Camino del Norte and capture not only the experience of the walk, but also the local festivals etc. Although, the bull being tormented and killed for entertainment and some dubious expression of art and culture is not something to be proud of in Spain. I imagine you showed it so viewers can see it and judge for themselves. I'm sure you tried to be non-judgemental and wanted to show the real life and culture as it happens. Viewers can skip that part of the video if they don't want to see it, but I feel it wasn't necessary to show it really. It seems very out of place, considering the nature of your pilgrimage. I imagine that you are just observing and commenting, but you do choose what to include in the video. Personally, I would not have even watched it, let alone film it. I live in Spain, most of my friends and family here find bullfighting an absolutely abhorrent custom. It's a bloody and violent practice that should have no place in a caring society. The only thing good about the bullfight that you showed was when the bullfighter got pinned by the bull, but then you saw how it quickly became 6 against one, so nothing honorable about that at all. That isn't anything to do with art, bravery or honour. It's about dominance, cruelty and torture of an animal; which surely doesn't do anything to help people transform themselves in a positive way.

@@markdonovan1540 no, Mark , no me molestas, pero hay fanáticos, no Vd. Que atacan la fiesta de los toros. El toro es el emblema de Europa desde la antigüedad, princesa Fenicia llamada Europa es raptada por un Toro y sus descendientes son los Europeos.
España es la mayor heredera del mundo del toro, que pasó América. Ese mundo llena toda la cultura Universal de España ,lit!eratura, pintura, arquitectura música baile tradiciones, gastronomia, ganadería. Etc . Ese es nuestro legado.
Estados Unidos tienen la cultura de Frites and chiKen, y o la Hamburguesa. Y sin ánimo de ofender. No hay color. Por eso a mí me gusta el mundo del Toro, lo que no me gusta es la Muerte del Toro. Pero menos me gusta la muerte de millones de animales en los mataderos y viviendo de mala manera su corta vida.
El Toro es junto con el caballo de rejoneo la élite de los animales ,viven en la naturaleza, bien comidos , haciendo ejercicio, cuidados por veterinarios etc el toro más de 5 años y el caballo 20 o 30 años, si no muere en una cogida.
En el sur de Francia ,un tercio de Francia ama los toros y hay numerosas corridas y fiestas, búsquelo en You tuve. Saludos desde España☺️🇪🇸🐎🐂❤️
What should have been an enjoyable film of a Camino walk, is ruined fifteen minutes in by a detailed description of the shameful barbarity and cruelty of a bullfight. Repugnant. I have unsubscribed.

Thank you for asking and for watching my documentaries. I am doing well. I walked and filmed three more Caminos, but so far I was not able to make documentaries. In September I hike another Camino.
