The Police were a British rock band formed in 1977, consisting of Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar), and Stewart Copeland (drums). Known for their reggae-influenced punk rock sound, the band became globally famous in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Police are celebrated for their innovative blend of rock, punk, and reggae rhythms, which created a fresh sound that was both accessible and musically complex. Their hits include "Roxanne," "Every Breath You Take," and "Message in a Bottle," among others. The band's dynamic, marked by Sting's distinctive voice and the trio's chemistry, helped them achieve significant critical and commercial success.
"Spirits in the Material World" is a track from The Police's fourth studio album, "Ghost in the Machine," released in 1981. The song features a driving rhythm and prominent synthesizer parts, marking a slight shift from the band's earlier guitar-driven sound. Lyrically, it reflects Sting's interest in philosophical and existential questions, exploring the tension between spiritual existence and the materialistic concerns of the world. The lyrics suggest a skepticism about the ability to overcome material constraints through spiritual means. This track remains one of The Police's more thought-provoking songs, combining deep lyrics with their signature sound.

Other songs with a reggae vibe from rock bands are: "Is There Anybody There" by Scorpions and of course D'yer Mak'er by Led Zeppelin 😎

Andy Summers didn't really think they were doing reggae. It was just the groove and the use of syncopation.

Fair enough. But it DOES sound like reggae-inspired at the very least.

Agreed. There was plenty of reggae to be inspired by but the band took their influences from jazz, classical and a host of other genres. Watch the Rick Beato interviews with both Summers and Sting.

Just about a perfect stretch for a band. great material and growth over 5 LPs and done.
I see the band as a bunch of flying canaries instead of punks/surfers. THey sound like little birds darting in and out of the melody. I blame Copelands' percussion for that picture in my head.😆

Hahaha! Honestly though, it's a perfect storm of three guys. Copeland's drumming, Sting's singing and bass playin, and Andy Summers masterful guitar work in there. It's pretty insane what those guys did in 7 years. It really is.
