It is pretty much impossible to find any Police track that isn't at least interesting, but many many are absolutely brilliant. Carry on.

the English ska sound was multicultural and wasn't considered appropriation - what a strong voice and to play bass and sing is a considerable challenge for most, great song writing and musicianship by all three - thanks!

The Police brought their own swag for their sound. Just like Led Zep came in like an atomic Howlin' Wolf. Then Bob Marley took in some influence from London for Exodus. It's just that "Red, Red Wine" AI-reggae🤖 that drives me nuts! Arg, fave Police song... Walking on the Moon, for sure. The Bed's Too Big Without You is similar, but damn! Too good. And Stewart Copeland all day!

Could've been seeing "So Lonely" staying up bleary-eyed past bedtime to watch Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. Message in a Bottle had heavy radio play stuck it for me. Their deep cuts are top-tier!

Heck YES Stewart Copeland... Who I really feel is the literal heartbeat of The Police. He has INSANE chops. Can play anything. And he settled to be in The Police.

Sting has (at this stage possibly 'had') a Newcastle 'Geordie' accent. Think a slightly milder Sean ('Rifleman Sharpe')Bean.

You should try *The Warning* - 3 sisters from Mexico (but they speak and sing in perfect English) who just got off a headlining European tour, will tour with Evanescence next, and will meet Band-Maid in Japan for at least one show. Try 'S!CK' from the 2023 MTV VMAs.

Good show.. she's getting the Police more and more.
Your comment about your discomfort at Sting playing 'black' music was a weird one..let me set you right here.
I'm English, so understand the West Indian stuff well..
Bob Marley..the biggest reggae star. easily..had an English father..now you can cast aspersions one way, then another here, but it matters not, because this meant, and still means, by any reckoning of ethnicity, Bob was half English...you could say English, as the paternal line traces ancestry entirely all through our western societies.
The other point I feel you could have made, very important one..the police fused reggae and rock...no one did it before, and no one has since. This band are sooo groundbreaking..they literally invented a genre. That's how good they are. Sorry to go on..had to be said..
We have some fantastic reggae bands in England, black, white, we don't distinguish..the music is what matters here...UB40..their first two albums are pure dub and fantastic songwriting you'd absolutely love... they're from my town too....signing off, and present arms.. fantastic albums.
Steel pulse...from my town too. Hands worth revolution is a masterpiece of British reggae
The Specials...from my area..a ska band, but superb at reggae..also from my area.
The Ruts..a punk band who occasionally played reggae..magnificently..love in vain is gem.
    The Clash..The Members..The Planets..
There are so many punk bands from the late seventies who played reggae excellently.. it's worth a dig around....
    P.s..love the Pumpkins too..great reactions..lol😄

Sorry, back again lol..I promise I'll go away after this one..
We have, and have since the fifties, a large West Indian population imported since the war, pretty much entirely in my area, the Midlands, but also London too...Handsworth, Birmingham was an absolute melting pot of talent in the seventies and eighties.
So, what I was needing to say was, time signatures. Reggae is 4/5 or 4/9..or 5/9.. depending totally on where the singer comes in, where the bass and drums are in relation to one another.
Now. This is interesting. Ringo Starr, pre Beatles, was playing these time signatures back in the fifties...at a time when Jamaican reggae was 4/4 only.
He had I've discovered, connections, friendship wise, with Jamaican musicians, therefore, who knows who introduced the off beat?
Who can say for certain, that it isn't English?
The thing that distinguishesvreggae from any other 4)5 etc, is the strum only, outside of this, you can find these time signatures everywhere in Classical music, and I mean everywhere...
    Something to chew on.🤔

No way! Always comment! That is DEFINITELY something that I wasn't aware of. I thought that immigrants into your country only happened in a big way in the last 25 years (hence Brexit.. and all of the weirdness that comes with that). The whole Britain remaining Britain and all that. Super important to have context on these sort of issues. And I have that now! So thank you!

@@aviewfromthestageYou are more than welcome 😊 our West Indian influx added massively to our area...phenomenal people...I even courted a West Indian lady for 9 years😄
The seventies and eighties were a magical time for music in Britain..punk . started by the Sex Pistols, a London band, the first Hard rock band, before that, everything was blues rock...never mind the bollocks is a masterpiece album..John lydon telling us about the bad behaviour of the upper classes..and boy they are bad, believe me.
John Lennon wrote a song about the very best of British..working class hero...and he was bang on...we are the best of British, that, unfortunately, Americans are unaware of, simply because of the inexorable push to place London above Birmingham. It's known today as the second city...but it really isn't..this area is the heart, the soul, the balls, and the humour of Anglo Saxon culture.
London, is a shadow man's town..full of carpetbaggers, swindlers, money men..it really is a farce of a place from a humanitarian standpoint.
Glad to inform though .please ask if you want to know anything.. be my pleasure 🙃

what exactly is "black music?" is reggae only allowed to be played by jamaicans or something? this term does not exist & should not be invented. lets stop labeling things by race ok?

    • @aviewfromthestage
      @aviewfromthestage  4 месяца назад

Actually, for AUTHENTIC reggae.. Marley is the best place to start for most people. And even first generation ska. Marley led the charge... and yes... from Jamaica. Use your historical brain... not your current one. All things in context. I'm not saying that anyone can't play it.. but when Gordon was sitting in his bedroom at age 14, you can't tell me he didn't have Marley and the Wailers on full blast. He then RIPPED THEM OFF... and played what they were playing for a decade previous to him. I was making an observation that MANY people have made about white pop/rock music.
