I can't decide if I want headers before wheels and coil-overs on my FR-S. The car already handles terrific and I enjoy the stock tires that allow it to be playful. Headers instantly solve the "dip" and a supercharger will eventually give it that refresh I'm looking for. I'm 55 and these cars are the most fun I've had on 4 wheels.

But if you don't mind the sacrifice it's a killer daily. I personally have 16 frs and a second car because I find it's a little much to drive the frs on the daily. i also like having an automatic I can just be lazy in some days. As a new driver look for a 2016 scion TC RS 10.0 its red with a pandem body kit yes thats right a factory installed pandem "rocket bunny" kit maby be the better option and all the younger toyota mechanics drive tc's not many have frs/86 that might say something.

Believe what you want, but I get the exact same amount of fun from of the BRZ as I did the Cayman. Do yourself a favor like I did & throw on some KW Clubsports, sticky tires & a catback exhaust, you’ll thank me later. Nailed it on this review! I have a 2014 BRZ that I daily drive year-round, track, drift, ice race, etc. and have loved it. The BRZ and 86 really came into their own after the changes in 2017+ The balance in the new cars is just about perfect. You can easily smooth out the torque curve and gain a little bit more power with an aftermarket header and a tune. Brakes are easy to make track worthy with high temp fluid and better pads/rotors too. I just swapped over the suspension and 4.3 diff from a wrecked 2017 BRZ, can't stress enough how well they perfected the suspension tuning on the refresh. You can make these cars into whatever you want to use them for. It's almost the perfect affordable sports car formula, and awesome that they exist in the market.

I've had my BRZ for almost 2 years and I love it. It's such a fun car to drive, the heel toe is perfect, and it gets really good MPGs. I'm 6'4" and fit just fine. Highly recommend. A simple tune fixes the torque dip. Mine has an Open Flash Tablet tune (switch between 93oct & E85 tune), UEL header, Borla axle back exhaust, & Dunlop tires. Also have brand new snow tires on 16" Legacy GT wheels (mounted & balanced $275 on craigslist). The BRZ rips in the snow, no problem because of the limited slip diff. You can run E85 with just a tune, no other mods. Buy a BRZ, it's an economy car that's insanely fun to drive. Manual Mandatory.
PS: Traction Control off is hold the left button down for a few seconds.

Awesome review! I agree on all points! I have a 2018 that I have lightly modified; I would highly recommend each of the mods I've done.
-Performance Pack - The Brembos are total overkill for this car... and I absolutely love it. The Sachs are pretty amazing too. Unbeatable value for the dollar.
-Apex ARC-8's (17x9 +42) with BFG Sport Comp II's (245/40R17) - the single biggest handling modification I have ever seen to any car. The wide tires and sticky rubber add an almost insane amount of grip - the car is damn near unflappable now, and an absolute scalpel on canyon roads and autocrosses.
-Adams Ceramic Coat (DIY) - protects that beautiful but OBSCENELY soft Subaru paint.
-Clutch pedal adjustment - moved the breakaway point for the clutch slightly closer to the floor, per personal preference.
-Radium master cylinder brace - firms up the brake pedal feel under medium+ load by preventing firewall flex. Quick and easy.
-Raceseng Contour shift knob - 500g shift knob replaces 200g stock knob; gives a more sure and confident feel going into gear due to the increased mechanical advantage.
-Helix convex side mirrors - gets rid of all blind spots.
-Helix side markers (smoked) - gets rid of the hideous orange markers.

Bravo on the mini-911! As a long time FRS owner (bought one new in 2013), I think the same! It’s like a 1980’s 911, smaller, less powerful than the current 911’s, but dynamically so close. I once test drove a used 996 and it felt like a larger FRS, eerily so. Like Twilight Zone weird....I have nearly 90k hard miles on mine (well maintained with a fresh clutch and Tein coilovers, better pads and rotors, stainless steel brake lines and a Nameless track delete-saving LOTs of weight). I’ve been researching a new car, which I intend to buy summer of 2019....my wife has a 2018 civic Si and my son has a Mk7 GTI; and during the Si purchase process I test drove the Type R, Audi RS3, a Cayman and several other cars. I was set on buying the new M2 Competition, but to be completely honest, I’m thinking of getting either the TRD GT86 or the Premium model BRZ (both spec’cd with the better Brembo brakes and the Sachs dampers, basically the mods I made to mine). For the money, I’m finding it very hard to justify buying ANY OTHER CAR. I remember when I first bought my FRS, I had come from a nicely modified 2006 STi (I bought new and modified to perfection myself)... the dealer insisted I would get bored with the FRS. He was so far off the mark, it isn’t funny. My FRS has simply been perfect. If I were rich, I’d own a GT3RS, but I’m not. I just cannot think of another car sold in the US better than these cars anywhere even close to this money. It’s cheap enough you can THRASH the bloody piss out of it and not worry; it’s not so ridiculously fast that you can drive it HARD all the time; and it’s not stupidly big and fat like even the 911’s have gotten. It’s the best RWD car you can buy. Period.

At the moment, the engine runs 205 WHP directly to the wheels. However, in the future, I plan on installing Invidia Overpipe and Invidia Frontpipe Catted. Matthew Gaither - I feel the same way. I expect plenty of people buy a BRZ/GT86 and don't care for the driving. But clearly (based on the comments) *lots* of us do.
I don't do track days in mine, but I'm sure it would be a blast. I used to race a Honda VFR400. It was old and heavy and slow compared to modern sport bikes, but I never had more fun on a bike than that VFR, which I could push to it's absolute limits without worrying about it biting me.
I feel the same about my BRZ. It's not super fast, but it handles *really* well and it's easy to push hard without much risk of getting into trouble.
There will always be a faster car. But owning a car you can just enjoy every time you get I to it - for not a lot of money, cheap on petrol, cheap to register, cheap to insure, and cheap to maintain? That's priceless.

In mid 1970s, Porsche had a 912. It was a 911 with a VW 1600cc engine. In a stock bug, 64 brake hp. Something around 90 hp in the 912. My wrench had tuned his beetle to 250 hp. Anyway at 90 hp, that Porsche was a blast.

I have a 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow. So far, the only mod I have done to it is wide angle side mirrors. This mod is crucial! It should have come from the factory with them. They eliminate the blind spots and they're inexpensive. The ones I got are heated. They also have a blue tint which helps reduce headlight glare at night.

It took me over a year to get used to the throttle in the BRZ. But once I realized what Subaru wanted of the driver and why it's like this, it was a GAME CHANGER.
Basically, they wanted this car to be a "slow" city commuter with amazing fuel economy (for the era), hence the torque dip in the lower-middle of the rev range.
They ALSO wanted you to turn into a Formula 1 pro (and did their best to make you feel like it) when you hit a corner or a country road.
You need to keep the car screaming at 5000+ RPM floor it to 7400 out of a corner and then powershift up and then down every corner - sometimes two gears in 2 seconds! You MUST NOT try to floor the gas in 3rd at 4000 RPM. Do the work.
It's a car that forces you to learn to drive like a pro and rewards you with some of the rawest, most agile, and thrilling driving experience on the entire market.
Sadly, so many dumb people (like myself) and even reviewers try to drive it after getting out of a TDI or a Supra and then complain it doesn't pull.
Subaru, I understand now. I understand why they forced you to change the BRZ in 2021. Thank you for making it in the first place.

Its my dream car that I followed for years leading up to its release. I own an MY15 CWP BRZ (from new) with the heated leather seats option. Mod wise swapped the FD to a Cusco 4.556 (13% faster gears) and a one piece aluminium drive shaft. Added a K&N drop in filter and some Crawford Power blocks that move the entire power band down a few hundred RPM, fatten the low down torque and close the TQ gap by 100rpm.
I added the TRD door stiffeners, STI strut brace, draw stiffener and v-brace. Swapped the suspension to Tein Flex-Z coilovers and added their top of the line EDFC Active Pro damping system that adjusts the damping on each corner on the fly. Dropped the car 2" and set neg 2 deg camber all round.
Tore out the entire audio system including speakers. Replaced with a 7" Pioneer head unit with Apple/Android, Pioneer powered sub in the boot (weighs only 6kg), tiny JBL 4 channel amp under the passenger seat and replaced all the speakers with JBL's including the 3" rear side wall ones with 5.25" units in custom brackets.
I have TOM's clear brake lights, STI fender inserts, STI front fender and rear boot badges and a sprinkling of STI bling parts like the red push start button, gear shifter, Oil Cap, Radiator Cap and Battery Tie down.
Going for forged 17x7.5" BBS wheels, Red manifold, ACE EL headers and a custom tune to finish it all off.
Wildly entertaining to drive and I'll probably keep it forever. Only thing that would make me want another car is BRZ were discontinued. Then I'd buy the final edition and do all the exact same mods to it all over again. No regrets these mods really massaged the performance envelop of this car without breaking spoiling it.
PS: I'm still on stock tires and loving them.

I'm glad that you liked the Infotainment, I was one the Test Engineers in manufacturing for that Project at Harman. It's called AM6 and the only real difference with other Suburu infotainments from that period (MY17 onwards) was the screen and buttons. The core componentes were pretty much the same. My personal favorite was this and the capacitive touch buttons based BC7 High, which end up in newer WRX/STi and other cars. I was told that production for AM6 stopped a while ago, which makes sense since BRZ also stopped being manufactured.

I'm between this and the 2019 Miata RF (with sport package) and cannot make a choice. In spain the prices of the two are very similar.
    Points for the BRZ:
+Back seats (yeah, I know they are pretty useless, but at least they are there for an emergency or to put some luggage.
    +Less body roll
-The car is very dated and will be replaced by the new generation in 2 years, with the supra coming out very soon.
    Miata:
+I live in Barcelona (sunny city) and the cabrio thing surely is cool.
+Cheaper insurance, less fuel consumption and easier to park (Parking in barcelona is a problem, and fuel is expensive as hell in spain)
    +Interior looks better
-Noisy interior, even with hard top.
    -Body roll. Passengers get dizzy.
-The trunk opening is the shit, you cannot even put a small cabin suitcase in there.
In the end this will be a coint toss for me it seems... but I'm still open for suggestions haha.

Just over a year ago, I was looking into getting my first car and I wanted one of these so badly. Eventually I settled on an nc Miata because that's what I could afford and it was still a similar car. Fast forward a bit of time and I got a better paying job where I appraise cars. After driving and sitting in countless cars (Lexus, BMW, Porsche, etc.) BRZs and 86s still had a special place in my heart. Recently I decided to trade my little Miata for a 2017 BRZ limited and the BRZ is honestly worlds better than Miatas in my opinion. And if anyone says these guys are wrong about them comparing a BRZ to a Porsche, clearly has not driven a Porsche and a BRZ back to back before. They're honestly so similar, it's hard to believe how Caymans are so much more expensive than these. If anyone is wanting to get one of these and you have the means to, I promise you will not be disappointed in the slightest even despite the "low power"

bought a 13 frs back in 2015 for 19k usd with 19k miles. since then I have put on a slew of aftermarket exterior mods, power mods including full exhaust, intake, header, tuned for e85. suspension mods such as kw v3 suspension, adjustable lower control arms and some upgraded winmax w5 brake pads with dba rotors. Learned how to drive on track with this car and have grown as a driver all together. forgot to mention I have 17x9 wheels with 255/40 re71r tires. Couldn't recommend this car more to any other enthusiast for a moddable, new, and modern sports car from a japanese manufacturer for a reasonable price.

My wife bought the outback in 2017 and I was thinking about the BRZ but couldn’t justify 2 wheel drive for my 1.5 winter commute to work. Plus I’d look like the that old guy in a two seater 😀

I second what totIV's saying, it's the tires that make all the difference. here's a video by Tire Reviews, a tremendously underrated yt channel, ruclips.net/video/STaximkaQxo/видео.html
I would also suggest watching Everyday Driver's video about driving an FRS in the winter, hope that would help :)

Let's be realistic here. The major problem in winter with brz/86 is clearance. Traction comes after. There are some brutal storms here in north east U.S. Driving in summer in NYC in such a low car would still be tough due to absurd potholes, add winter storm on top of that and you're going nowhere.

It makes a difference to drive a 4wd in Winter in Canada. Because of the type of snow we get here it's usually way more than what Americans get. I used to own a Nissan Altima, (2wd, fwd) with snow tires but I often got stuck in the morning before the cleanup crews after some heavy snow. It gets worst when there's ice as there often is. After 2 years, I sold it and bought a 6 cylinder outback never have to suffer in the morning on winter and getting late to work again.

You guys are so right this is the tuners car and it's made to be this way you can add as much power as you need you don't need to complain about the horsepower because half of the fun of this car is tuning it

  • @etoineschrdlu9382

Mods: I have a '15 BRZ Limited and I added a Perrin Gurney flap, FT-86 Speedfactory Catted UEL header, and a OpenFlash Tablet tune for 91 octane gasoline. The flap is just for looks, but the tune and header eliminate the flat spot in the torque curve and add maybe 15 to 20 HP. Driveability is noticeably improved. For Winter I added Continental Winter Contact tires on Enkei Performance M52 (OEM width and diameter). I still have the original Summer tires on the stock wheels and the car does handle better over the Winter.

Didnt reach what u hope for if it's only 20 hp u already spend a lot for that

    • @etoineschrdlu9382
      @etoineschrdlu9382 5 лет назад

@@misharialmutairi8816 Au contraire, my friend; it was exactly what I was hoping for and exactly what I got. My BRZ is a daily driver, not a race car, and so I want drivability and reliability. The 15 to 20 HP additional peak horsepower is just that: the HP measured somewhere around 7000 rpm. I'm getting that additional 15-20 HP throughout 75% of the engine's rev range: significant improvements in low and mid range power and torque in addition to the improvement at top end. The torque curve is now virtually flat with about 160 lb-ft from 2500 to 7000 rpm rather than the disappointing up, down, up, down, up down of the stock torque curve that peaks at 151 lb-ft at about 4700 rpm and has that dismal 130 lb-ft valley at 3700 rpm. So, in "normal" driving between 3000 to 4000 rpm I now have 20 to 30 more lb-ft on tap and nearly that much everywhere else on the curve. Drivability in now much better, which does translate to being more fun to drive. The beauty of this is that an additional 10% peak HP isn't going to overstress the OEM engine components or the stock transmission and drive line components.
Yes, in terms of cash spent, this was a lot of cash. But in terms of risk and time, it was cheap. The standard OFT tunes are relatively safe if used as instructed and take less than 5 minutes to install (even less if you get the latest OFT). The catted UEL header was pricey but well engineered, developed, and manufactured and it only cost me the time and labor of a couple of hours on a mechanics lift. Both mods did exactly what they were advertised to do: they added reliable power and driveability with a bolt on header and an OBD2 plug-in. I didn't have to install new injectors, replace valves, rods, or pistons, upgrade the cooling and oiling systems, or make any driveline upgrades to compensate for the increased power. Just look at SAVAGEGEESE video content on his FR-S supercharging project and then ask if he'd ever attempt such a project again. Oh, you don't have to, he already said he'd never try it again. Was he successful? Yes, kind of, but it was way more trouble than it was worth: ruclips.net/video/GT717HBSSNE/видео.html
If I were building a trackday or race vehicle it would cost monetarily ten to twenty times what I spent on my daily driver to make a BRZ track ready plus a few 100's of hours in prep time.
I've spent as much as I care to spend on this project, I'm very satisfied with the result, and I do not believe that attempting to get more power out of a naturally aspirated 2 liter engine would be worth the time, money, or effort unless it was for a trailered race vehicle.

Great car when I owned it! had the 2013 model :) best car I've owned so far. Started with a 06 sentra SER Spec-V, then the 12 BRZ and now the 17 Focus ST. Miss it every day! Had full header back )Replaced the stock EL header with Tomei EL for the rumble), all light weight pulleys, bigger radiator, intake, stage 2 clutch, and stage 2 OFT tune to take away the dip. Glad you guys reviewed this car!!!

Hey, I used to have an I/H/E 02 Spec V! I used to say if the Spec V was RWD I would keep it forever or if the S15 Silvia was ever sold in the US I would buy it in a heartbeat, then along comes the FR-S that is the same weight as my Spec V and looks largely like the S15 Silvia complete with RWD. One thing I do miss is the insanely wide powerband of the Spec V, the 86 family could benefit from a 2.5L engine with a wider powerband, especially in daily driving.

I can agree to how the BRZ feels like a mini 911 statement. I personally own a 2014 BRZ and my Dad has a 2015 911 GT3 and a 2004 911 base 6 speed. I drive both the 996 and BRZ frequently and they honestly feel very similar to each other in terms of driving position and handling.
